trufm Breeds Talent

Posted by radio On May - 10 - 2013

trufm is a SABC youth radio station based in the Eastern Cape. The station is unique in the SABC PBS stable as it is the only station primarily targeting the youth with two languages of broadcast, IsiXhosa and English. This differentiating factor matters as it provides the youth with a platform to express themselves, to engage with each other and interact with the rest of the world. This is done within the context of the mandate to inform, educate and entertain, to support and develop culture and as far as possible ensure the fair and equal treatment of the predominant languages in the province.

In essence, trufm is an empowering, enabling and ensuring platform of expression for young people.

Being a youth station means that trufm is also a breeding ground for talent in line with the SABC mandate to educate; support and develop. The station boasts a young staff compliment which is eager; youthful and hungry for growth and success. These young people are recruited based on talent and are then trained to meet the station’s requirements for broadcasting. Many of these young people come with no radio or broadcasting experience and are provided with on the job training. The station’s programming team that includes a well-seasoned presenter and trainer; Mr Mel Gahler and Mr Tony Soglo continue to refresh the minds of these young people through in house training. Other experts within the SABC are also used to train these young people.

The station is also proud to have been of great assistance to other SABC radio stations like Umhlobo Wenene where it’s recently appointed programme manager had to get some exposure and training via the station’s programming office. The UWFM two recently appointed music compilers, Ms Gwija and Mr Gwiba were also trained through the station’s music department.

The station looks for individuals with raw talent and potential and turns them into forces to be reckoned with in the industry. At only five years old the station has produced industry giants that now enjoy various prestigious positions around the country. Examples include, Siphokazi January who just joined Metro FM taking over from Azania, Velile Mbuli an SABC sports presenter, Nada Wotshela, Siphelele Sixaso , Andile Ncube the list goes on.

“The station has been positioned as a school of broadcasting and it is a positioning that has yielded great results and we thank the other SABC platforms who recognize the talent and offer them bigger platforms before they are pouched by the competition. The SABC invests in the station and there must be a return on the investment. This means though that we have to work extra hard in training people but it’s much more fulfilling when you see the results of the hard work that the Trufm team puts in” says Thobeka Buswana, who has been the station manager of trufm since its launch in 2008.

trufm continues to arm its employees with tools that make them so attractive as prospective game changers in the country through identifying potential and molding them with a youthful and sincere approach to broadcasting.
