Having started her career in radio with YFM and later joining Supersport, Mpho has come full circle, joining MetroFM from April 2015, doing sport on The Great Escape with Amon Mokoena and Pearl Modiadie the drivers of the show from 12-3pm weekdays. We caught up with her to find out more about the woman behind the voice.

Mpho complete the sentence: I am…

First and foremost a mother and then I am someone who loves life in all in different facets.

You were born in Wattville in the Eastrand and grew up in Daveyton, where did you attend school?

Wordworth High School in Benoni

You are very active on Twitter, what made you sign up?

FOMO and beyond that, I was just feeling a bit tired of how Facebook is structured and enjoyed the immediacy of Twitter.

You advocate for self-love and are well known for your self-confidence, was this always the case? If not, what was the turning point for you?

I’ve not always been the most confident of women, but getting to know one’s self helps improve this.

Describe 3 legitimate fears you had and explain how you overcome them.

The fear of failure, fear of success and fear of not living up to people’s expectations. Switching careers 3 times before the age of 30 made me realise that fear is all in the mind and one can actually be a success in your field as long as you are willing to put in the work. Also that one can NEVER live up to anyone’s expectations. Do you, people will talk anyway.

Who are the main people who have influenced you in your career?

DJ Fresh – Very selfless and he takes care of those he cares about. He’s one person you want to have in your corner.

Robert Marawa – He’s an awesome shoulder to cry on and someone I look up to in the sporting space because he makes it look so easy.

My Mother – She’s an amazing woman.

You are very proud of being a mother, why is this so and what are amongst your other greatest accomplishments?

Motherhood is firstly my greatest accomplishment because having endometriosis and having had a miscarriage, I never thought this would happen. Secondly it would be joining MetroFM and lastly hosting studio shows during both the World Cup and AFCON, intense.

You’re a very talented woman, what is the thing you most wish you were great at?

Drawing. I love art and I wish I paid more attention in art class at school.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years? 10 years? 15 years?

Anchoring a sport radio show and making my girl’s foundation a success in 5 years. Being a force behind the scenes in sport TV in 10 years and travelling a lot more in 15 years time.

If you could have dinner with anyone in history, who would it be & what would you eat?

Maya Angelou because she is the epitome of wisdom.

What do you think people misunderstand most about you?

People mistaken my sarcasm for being rude. It used to bother me but not anymore. Wit is fun.

Lastly, what would you like to be remembered for?

Being someone who is unapologetically herself
