SABC Radio stations win BIG at Liberty Radio Awards

Posted by radio On April - 25 - 2017

A number of the South African Broadcasting Corporations (SABC) radio stations along with their presenters and programmes were recognised and awarded across various genres for excellence in local programming, during the Liberty Radio Awards, which were held over the weekend at the Sandton Convention Centre.

Umhlobo Wenene FM led the SABC stable by collecting six awards including the coveted Station of the Year award for Public Broadcasting Services (PBS). The Station broadcasts in IsiXhosa, 24 hours a day, seven days a week throughout all nine Provinces and reaches over 5million listeners every week. Several other SABC Radio Stations took home two awards each, these included:

  • Tru FM
  • Thobela FM
  • Ukhozi FM
  • SAfm
  • Radio 2000

Not to be outdone, Lotus FM, Ligwalagwala FM, and 5FM bagged an award each.

Other highlights included a TruFM Bright Star inductee, Lwazi Mpofu. This category recognises the future leaders in the broadcasting industry and the SABC expects great things from Lwazi. In the Best News Reader category, Nomsa Mdhluli was recognised as the best news reader across the radio platform, lending credence to the SABC position as the developer of new talent. In addition to the awards, three of the six people who were inducted to the Hall of Fame included Umhlobo Wenene Rev. Nomathamsanqa Rweqana and two former employees Mr Fakir Hassen and Mr Zola Yeye.

SABC’s Head of Radio Marketing, Mr Siphelele Sixaso, was exuberant when he said, “These awards are indicative of the SABC’s dominance in South Africa’s radio landscape. It’s wonderful to have our fellow industry peers and competitors recognise this. This is a tremendous accolade to the hard working SABC radio teams who deliver on our mandate and touch the lives of millions of South Africans from all walks of life, every day. The performance of the SABC Radio brands at the Liberty Radio awards confirms that our brands are here to stay and chart the way forward for radio globally. The Liberty Radio awards also play a huge role in reaffirming to our clients and listeners that SABC is home to the country’s biggest radio brands”.

The Liberty Radio Awards aim to present a credible, well-judged and transparent programme that promotes and recognises excellence in radio, with the objective of ensuring that radio remains one of South Africa’s leading media choices. The awards are about rewarding those individuals and organisations who combine talent, hard work and skill to ensure that their listeners are compelled and it is important for the SABC to be part of it.
