5FM’s Station Manager wins Veuve Clicquot Elle Boss Award

Posted by radio On November - 21 - 2017

5FM’s Station Manager Justine Cullinan is the winner of the Corporate Award at this year’s Veuve Clicquot ELLE Boss Awards in association with Old Mutual Corporate.

The Veuve Clicquot ELLE Boss Award, now in its third year, celebrates successful, innovative entrepreneurial women and businesswomen who have made a significant contribution to business life in South Africa and are natural business leaders.

Since the end of 2014 Justine has led a dedicated team who stand by their brand ethos to bring together youthful South Africans through the power of music.  She was nominated for the award by on-air presenter Rob Forbes for her trend-setting, innovative strategies and ability to motivate her team in even the most difficult times. In his nomination Forbes said, “5FM is an institution for so many young people growing up and it hasn’t been an easy two years.  For a lot of us, being able to navigate through that has been down to Justine. I think it’s been an incredible achievement to keep a brand as big as 5FM as important as it is through a period of such change.”

On being announced as the winner of the coveted award, Justine, who is affectionately known as the 5FM “Bosslady”, shared her appreciation for the recognition, “It is an absolute honour and privilege to be nominated for the Veuve Clicquot ELLE Boss Award. I am incredibly proud to be part of the journey of supporting South African women in corporate leadership and I think it’s very important that organisations that trade in SA, like Old Mutual and Veuve Clicquot, play a role in empowering tomorrow’s female leaders.”

She added that entrepreneurship is the way forward because if new jobs are not created rather than sought, there won’t be any for the future generations. “At 5FM I do everything in my power to empower and mentor women for the future media industry, which is going to become increasingly important in understanding and managing our South African lives,” she says. 2017 also marked the first year in the history of 5FM that a black, female presenter was appointed to host the important afternoon drive show in the form of 5FM’s Thando Thabethe, known to her 5FM fans as Thabooty. Justine comments that this move was a core aspect of her plan over the past three years as Station Manager and it was long overdue.

In a media release judge Khanyi Dhlomo, Founder & CEO of Ndalo Media and ELLE magazine Publisher, herself recognised and honoured as one of SA’s most influential and inspiring businesswomen, summed up the 2017 Awards by saying, “All this year’s finalists were natural leaders, confident, strong, committed and risk-takers who are driven to succeed”.

From the large numbers of entries, the panel of judges awarded Justine the corporate award category title, while Amanda Dambuza, Founder of Director of consulting company Uyandiswa, won the entrepreneur category, and went on to win the overall prize as well.

Listeners can catch Justine on The Roger Goode Show on Wednesday, 22 November between 08:00 – 09:00 for one of her regular #Bosslady sessions, where she will answer questions on the radio business and chat a little about her award. She remains always open to the 5FM community through email.  Email her bosslady@5fm.co.za.
