Reggae Pilgrimage Leads to Collaboration

Posted by radio On May - 2 - 2018

As Dub inc, the internationally acclaimed French reggae group continue their global success, with concerts across Africa, their recent performance in Abidjan took on special significance.

One of the group’s singer Komlan said this past week that his participation in the Anoumabo Festival of Urban Music (Femua 2018) was like a pilgrimage, as Côte d’ivoire the capital of reggae in Africa, “For me, it was like a kind of pilgrimage. We went to Kingston, Jamaica, but Abidjan is also the reggae capital in Africa,” added the French artist of Beninese origin.

The group was in the Ivory Coast for the FEMUA festival, launched in 2008 by the legendary Ivorian musical group Magic System. The festival is one of the biggest festivals in sub-Saharan Africa and is a forum for promoting urban music rhythms.

During their stay in Abidjan, Dub inc collaborated with the singer Alif Naaba, known as the ‘Barefoot Prince of Burkina Faso,” and the kora player Massa Dembele, both from Burkina Faso. Alif was featured in the original version of the song in 2013, off the group’s album Paradise.

The collaboration resulted in a moving acoustic rendition of the group’s version of the song “Enfants des ghettos / Children of the Ghetto” that will be released as a music video on May 5th, just weeks ahead of the group’s arrival in Southern Africa.

The song is an apt outcome of the festival that is also a platform on the major issues affecting the African continent, with the theme this year being illegal immigration.  Komlan went on to explain that “risking your life to (go) to Europe is dangerous and has a price. The goal of illegal immigrants, he says, “is rarely achieved and unfortunately many Africans who are waiting for their relatives in Europe do not know that life there is difficult.”

The group will soon be heading to South Africa and Swaziland with their hopeful vision of unity and tolerance, infused with electronic vibrations, some hints of dubstep, and a few hip hop references.

The group will be performing at the following events across South Africa and Swaziland at the end of May 2018.

25/05/2018 – Bushfire Festival / Malkerns

26/05/2018 – Bassline Festival / Johannesburg
