MTN Bushfire: Rainbow Your Fire!

Posted by radio On May - 10 - 2018

Winner of the African Best Responsible Event Award in 2017, MTN Bushfire has also been hailed in by CNN as one of the “7 African music festivals you really have to see” and listed by BBC as a “Top African Festival.”

MTN Bushfire is a uniquely African, and yet globally infused, festival experience that welcomes thousands of people in an atmosphere of tolerance and passionate commitment to music, the arts, and the environment.

From May 25th – 27th MTN Bushfire encourages everyone, from guests and artists, to traders and vendors to BRING YOUR FIRE to the beautiful Malkerns valley in Swaziland.

Your Fire is your energy, your spirit, your passion, and your drive to make a difference.

As part of the annual Bring Your Fire call to action, MTN Bushfire 2018 will be hosting a diversity of activations in the newly launched and fully interactive, Bring Your Fire Zone. This year a range of themes will be featured at the festival, including environmental sustainability, education, cultural development, human rights, equality for LGBTI people, gender issues,  as well as sexual & reproductive health and freedom.

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex (LGBTI) people experience significant social discrimination in many places. The consequence of these social and structural factors is that many members of the LGBTI community are not able to lead a dignified life, have a family and contribute to society. The long-term vision is for all people to enjoy equal recognition before the law and social inclusion within society.

MTN Bushfire, in partnership with Swazi organisation The Rock of Hope will therefore present a host of activities aimed at promoting equality and inclusion. From poetry slams and discussion at the new venue The Hub, to social and photo booth activations, everyone is invited to take part.

The MTN Bushfire Rainbow Fire Stall Activation seeks to raise the visibility of the LGBTI community within the space with the hopes to spread the fire of acceptance within the communities in which they reside.

The Rock of Hope is an advocacy organisation partnered locally with the Other Foundation, and internationally by All Out, and is working on a number of initiatives in Swaziland to promote equality and acceptance.

MTN Bushfire is also very excited to announce a performance from Staceyann Chin, multiple award-winning poet and performer. Winner of the 2013 American Heritage Award from American Immigration Council, and the 2016 Planned Parenthood Excellence in Media award, Chin is also a 2017 LGBTQ Humanist Award recipient. She unapologetically identifies as Caribbean and Black, Asian and lesbian, woman and resident of New York City.

A proud Jamaican National, Staceyann’s voice was featured on the Oprah Winfrey Show, where she spoke candidly about her experiences of growing up on the island and the dire consequences of her coming-out there.

Further activations and partnerships within this space will be announced soon. For more information on the 2018 edition of MTN Bushfire visit www.bush-fire.com or https://www.facebook.com/MTNBUSHFIRE
