A diverse mix of South African’s will be represented on the show where we are invited into ordinary people’s living rooms. Introducing some of Gogglebox’s households:

  • Portuguese married couple Travis and Giselle, both share the same professional interest as online content producers. This couple is bold and entertaining. Their strong connection as a couple will be tested as this couple don’t always see eye-to-eye. Join Travis and Giselle as they entertain you with their energetic playful vibe on Gogglebox.

  • Valentine and Melissa enjoy spending their time doing the simple things in life as a couple – having dinner and drinks in front of the TV. Valentine a make-up sales rep and Melissa a home executive share their time with their three year old son. A dynamic, supportive and beautiful young family that will be sure to keep you entertained.

  • Best friends, Eslina and Mirriam have been by each other’s side since the age of 15. Eslina is a home executive, while Mirriam is a domestic worker. They are entertaining, open and honest, with the best sense of humour. Their contrasting personalities with Mirriam taking the role as the ‘big sister’ and Eslina’s ‘sometimes naughty’ behaviour are sure to get viewers hooked.

  • Sisters Tamzin and Adele describe themselves as fun, loud and opinionated. Tamzin is a dance teacher and Adele is a relationship executive. The sisters enjoy spending time together but don’t always agree on what to watch. With Tazmin’s care free attitude and Adele’s more intellectual views, these sisters are set to provide entertainment.

Gogglebox South Africa  – Sony Pictures Television Networks’ first locally commissioned South African television series – is set to have us glued to the box, with a concept that will have you addicted to watching people – watching TV!

Get ready as the households openly voice their unscripted opinions about what they are watching on the box – whether on  politics, sport, news, reality TV or the latest  dramas, from the comfort of their living rooms.

You’ll become acquainted with the folks of Gogglebox, commenting on shows we often think the same about when watching TV. This topical show is filmed 7 days before the episode airs, allowing viewers to observe the households watching the weeks TV shows,  encouraging  up-to-date and at times controversial discussions.

The 10-part local version has been commissioned by the Sony Channel and will be produced by partners Eject Media’s, Stephan Le Roux and Picture Tree’s; Gary King.

Says Sonja Underwood, Sony Pictures Television Territory Director – Africa Channels: “Gogglebox is a fantastic show and we believe that its humour and diversity makes it perfect for South African audiences. It is not your typical television show and we believe our first local production will become a firm viewer favourite.”

Executive Producer Stephan Le Roux concurs: “We believe that we have created a show that will create debate among people. Gogglebox South Africa reflects the current state of society and will stimulate viewers to share their opinions and thoughts. We hope that it will also inspire more channels to make programmes in the local marketplace.”

On its debut in the UK, Gogglebox soon became a word-of-mouth hit that had the Twittersphere buzzing and has resulted in numerous spin-offs in countries around the world with popular editions made in the US, Canada, Australia, Italy, Israel, Poland, Finland, France, Norway, China and the Ukraine. And now South Africa is to get its own home-grown version.

Gogglebox airs every Thursday at 21:00 on SONY CHANNEL DStv (Channel 127)

More than a million babies are born in South Africa every year and one in seven of those are born premature with many not making it past their first 28 days of life.  Babies who would have died a few decades ago survive today due to specialist care received in Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU) worldwide.  While there are many factors associated with premature birth, in many cases the exact cause is unknown meaning any pregnant woman might be at risk.

Heart FM

Heart FM has once again put their hearts into the cause and partnered with Newborns Groote Schuur Trust, Cape Argus and Pick ‘n Pay to raise much needed funds for the ‘Little by Little’ campaign aimed at expanding and upgrading the Groote Schuur Neonatal Unit.

The Neonatal Unit is only one of two tertiary units in the Western Cape capable of providing the highly specialised care that these tiny babies so desperately need, and was the first tertiary unit in the country to be awarded Baby Friendly Status by the WHO.

From humble beginnings, the Neonatal unit now cares for upwards of 75 babies at any one time in a space constrained environment.  Life saving neonatal care is very costly and a successful campaign with Heart FM, Pick n Pay and the Cape Argus in 2010/11 helped equip the unit with desperately needed incubators which are still saving lives today.

To date, R 280 000 has been raised for the “Little by Little” campaign which runs until the 17th of February 2016.

Members of the public can get involved by purchasing a R10 ticket at any Western Cape Pick ‘n Pay store or donating directly on the Newborns Trust  website. The proceeds will go directly to the upgrade of the unit which cares for more than 3 000 babies every year. Customers will be asked to make a R10 donation when they pay for their shopping, fill in their details on a voucher and deposit this in the box at the information kiosk.  To reward shoppers for donating to the cause, Pick n Pay is giving away R 2000 worth of groceries for the duration of the campaign through a lucky draw.

For a glimpse into the life of a premature baby watch the following video: A premature baby’s story

For more information on the campaign visit www.1049.fm or log onto Newborns Trust to see how your contribution can make a difference in the life of a premature ba

It has been months since a drop of rain fell in Northern KwaZulu-Natal but residents were showered with love this morning when East Coast Radio’s Project #WaterShare arrived to rehydrate Vryheid.

ecr5

People, schools and businesses across the province generously heeded the call for help when Project #WaterShare was launched on East Coast Breakfast with Darren Maule on Tuesday (26 January 2016). As a result, more than 360 000 litres of bottled and tanked water were trucked in to the town this morning during a special live broadcast of the show.

ecr1

Contributions came from all corners of the province and will be used to bring relief to areas that have been brought to their knees by the crippling drought. NGO, Gift of the Givers, has come on board to assist the station with on-the-ground logistics and will be coordinating the province-wide water drop-offs.

Today’s focus saw bottles of water being distributed to four areas in and around Vryheid – Mvuyane, Mvuzini, Nceceni and Mhlongo Farm.

ecr2

East Coast Radio’s General Manager, Boni Mchunu, says with parts of our province reeling from lack of rain, every bottle counts. “As East Coast Radio, we cannot sit back and do nothing to help. This is why project #Watershare came about. It’s our way of providing a platform for the people across the province to get involved so we can make a meaningful difference. The response so far has been phenomenal but there’s so much still to be done.”

ecr4

The District Mayor of Zululand, Mpiyakhe Hlatshwayo, dropped in on this morning’s live broadcast to express his heartfelt thanks to the people of KZN. “We have been in the grip of drought for months now and every day it is getting more severe,” he told East Coast Breakfast hosts, Darren Maule and Natarah Nadesan. “ The once mighty Klipfontein Dam here in Vryheid is just a shadow of its former self. In fact the dams across Zululand have been badly hit. It’s just a terrible situation.”

In addition to the tens of thousands of litres of bottled water donated by residents all around our province, big business has been quick to lend a helping hand.

Spar KZN contributed 28 000 litres; Oasis Water together with Cargo Carriers tanked through 32 000 litres to Vryheid as well as 13 000 litres of bottled water; Star Retailers donated 1500 litres; Thirst committed 6000 litres which were trucked from Newcastle; aQuelle sent through 1500 litres and

Elliott Mobility trucked in 2500 litres to Vryheid this morning.  And the contributions continue!

Back at the station’s headquarters in Umhlanga, the parking area has been transformed into a sea of blue and listeners stream in with bottles of new, sealed water. The collection drive continues until 6am on Monday. By 1pm on Friday, people of KZN had donated 450 000 litres of water to Project #WaterShare. The contributions will be pumped into the Gift of the Givers’ relief efforts in KZN.

MTV’s colossal TV and social media hit Lip Sync Battle is back with a vengeance as Season 2 opens with an epic clash between Channing Tatum and his wife, actress Jenna Dewan Tatum (MTV, 21:35 CAT, Monday 8 February).

lip

The “Magic Mike” muscleman gets well and truly in touch with his feminine side in a high octane display of girl power as he busts some killer moves dressed as Beyoncé, before performing a show-stopping rendition of “Let It Go” tricked up as “Elsa” from “Frozen”. Not letting him win that easily, wife Jenna holds her own, grinding away to Ginuwine’s “Pony” and giving her better half a lap dance to remember – although a surprise appearance by Queen Bey herself could tip the scales in Channing’s favour.

Hosted by the multi-talented LL Cool J with commentary by supermodel Chrissy Teigen, Lip Sync Battle has become a global success story for Viacom since launching on Spike TV in the USA in 2015.  Based on an original idea by John Krasinski and Stephen Merchant (both of whom have performed on the show) the series has become a global ratings and multiplatform superstar and is the most-watched original series in Spike’s history.

A-list stars and pop culture stars who went head-to-head in Season 1 included Emily Blunt vs Anne Hathaway, Common vs John Legend, Queen Latifah vs Marlon Wayans, and Jimmy Fallon vs Dwayne Johnson.  Among the most memorable performances are Will Arnett’s rendition of “Everything is Awesome” from the Lego Movie, Joseph-Gordon Levitt channelling Janet Jackson in “Rhythm Nation”, and John Legend getting in touch with his inner MC Hammer.  Other celebrities featuring on the show have included Mike Tyson, Anna Kendrick, Justin Bieber, Taraji P Henson and Malin Ackerman.

Commented Dillon Khan, Channel Head, MTV, “Lip Sync Battle is the funniest, most exciting and original reality format brought to TV in the last year. Season 2 promises to top Season One with some of the key players in the industry delivering jaw-dropping performances that will keep you talking for days on end. This is not to be missed.”

Get your regular dose of Lip Sync Battle on MTV (DStv channel 130) every Monday from 8 February at 21:35 CAT and on MTV Base (DStv channel 322) at 16:30 CAT every Fridays from 12 February.

MTN BUSHFIRE 2016 – ARTIST ANNOUNCEMENTS

As in previous years, the MTN BUSHFIRE artist line-up will feature a dynamic range of artists from across southern Africa and the globe.

MTN Bushfire is proud to announce that Mali’s internationally acclaimed world-music stars Songhoy Blues have been confirmed for this year’s main stage. Though their music bears elements of contemporary rock and hip hop, at its heart is a deep attachment to the homegrown songs and dances of Mali’s Songhoy people, as well as to such iconic West African guitar heroes as Baba Salah and Ali Farka Touré.

Their debut album has been described by top music magazine NME as “a masterpiece of desert blues, blending American guitar licks with Malian grooves.” Formed from the adversity of Mali, Songhoy Blues’ music is full of northern flavours: Gao takamba, Touareg guitar, Songhoy trance and traditional desert melodies. But all those tired old ‘world music’ prejudices have no place here. Songhoy Blues are four guys, guitar, drums, bass and vocals, driving rhythms, big hearts and a big story to tell.

Also confirmed for 2016 is the exciting new South African collaborative outfit Bombshelter Beast featuring Pitch Black Afro.  This group of renegades is making waves with their genre breaking eclectic fusion of Afrobalkan Skadubhall and has to be seen to be believed. The ever-changing international line-up includes jazz artists and for their MTN BUSHFIRE 2016 performance will feature Pitch Black Afro.

Other top acts performing at MTN Bushfire 2016 include one of South Africa’s hottest acts – Mafikizolo – whose 2014 comeback made waves across South Africa and beyond, have also been confirmed for MTN Bushfire 2016.

Joining these initial confirmed artists is Pablo Nouvelle, a filmmaker and musician from Switzerland who takes soul “back to the future” with a combination of new sounds and old samples. Manu Delago, an Austrian percussionist and composer, best known as Bjork’s hang drummer, will also perform alongside saxophonist and clarinet player Pepe Auer.

South African artists confirmed include, as always, cutting edge acts such as Native Young, Nomadic Orchestra, Felix Laband, and Toby2Shoes.

Acts from Swaziland include Bholoja, Nomzamo Zaza Dlamini & Fanaza.

Further acts are being finalized and more artists will be confirmed in the build-up to MTN Bushfire 2016.

SA Radio Awards on pause

Posted by radio On January - 19 - 2016 ADD COMMENTS

The South African Radio Awards, previously sponsored by MTN, is currently in the process of securing a headline sponsor for the event that celebrates the power of radio in South Africa.  It has been decided to postpone the call-to-enter until a new sponsor has been finalised.

saradioawrads

It is imperative that we match the South African Radio Awards programme with a strong sponsor that wants to leave an imprint, and drive potential in the highly professional and competitive radio industry.

Since inception in 2010, the Awards have grown exponentially from 15 to 116 radio stations, with entries growing from 196 to 1,802 in only six years.  Over 450 presenters, producers, shows and stations have received this prestigious accolade in the last six years.

The Awards draw participation from radio stations across all licensing categories, covering all languages.  The South African Radio Awards are well-established as the only industry-wide awards programme in South African radio.  Previous entries received from radio stations represent more than 98% of all South African radio listeners.

Please stay tuned and we’ll get the message out loud and clear as soon as we’re ready to hit PLAY again.
