These artists reflect a wider ange of musical styles and cultures – hailing from as far afield as Australia, Turkey and Austria – as well as from African countries closer  to home. These artists are just the latest in a long list of performers, including recently announced headliners, Grammy nominated artists, Les Nubians. The majority of artists are still to be announced in the upcoming weeks.

The latest list of confirmed artists includes:

Black Jesus Experience (Australia):  Black Jesus Experience blend traditional Ethiopian music with modern hip-hop and funk grooves.  Their rhymes & chimes deliver the musical strength and beauty of AFrica through the vocal prism of hip-hop and the freedom of jazz.

Banda Kakana (Mozambique): Banda Kakana has become a leading representative of a new generation of Mozambican bands, following in the celebrated footsteps of groups like Ghorwane, Eyuphuro and Orquestra Marrabenta Star of Mozambique.

BCUC (SA): Bantu Continua Uhuru Consciousness (BCUC) consists of seven musicians from Soweto, South Africa. BCUC moves the audience both physically and emotionally with a sound derived straight from our ancestral lineage. BCUC demystifies the general worldviews about modern Africa.

MTN Radio Awards deadline around the corner

Posted by radio On January - 14 - 2015 ADD COMMENTS

The entry deadline for the 2015 MTN Radio Awards is only two weeks away and entries are flowing in at a steady rate. Stations have had almost three months to submit examples of their finest work, which has to be in on 20 January (manual submissions) or 27 January (online submissions).

MTN rad

“Throughout the entry period, we have had a constant stream of enquiries about various aspects of the entry process, and we are anticipating a substantial increase in the volume of calls in the coming weeks,” says Lance Rothschild, CEO of the MTN Radio Awards. “As is normally the case, we know that we will receive the bulk of the entries within the last 24 hours preceding the deadline, however I urge stations to submit their entries as soon as possible and to avoid any frustration caused by system congestion.”

“The anticipated high volume of entries and the tight timelines within which we are working, particularly with regard to getting the material to the adjudicators and ensuring that they have sufficient time to effectively evaluate the entries, means that we have to be extremely strict with the deadlines. We will be unable to accommodate any late entries,” says Rothschild.

“Communication and engagement is the very art of radio and is the glue that binds stations and their listeners”, says Larry Annetts, Chief Marketing Officer of MTN South Africa. “As sponsors of the MTN Radio Awards we seek to enhance the relationship between stations and their listeners through acknowledging and rewarding excellent work.”

The MTN Radio Awards will be presented at a Gala Banquet at the Sandton Convention Centre on 18 April. Tickets are available by contacting Michelle McBride on 011 280 3000 / michellem@thefuture.co.za

The Best Of SA Music just got better

Posted by radio On December - 5 - 2014 ADD COMMENTS

Amstel is once again bringing their highly anticipated Amstel Golden Hour to the Durban Jazz Festival. This year, they have something unforgettable planned – a collaboration between South African legends, Ladysmith Black Mambazo and the kings of house music, Micasa.

 durban_jazz_festival_logo

The Amstel Golden Hour is all about turning one hour of the country’s most loved music festivals into something truly spectacular. This is done through epic staging, lighting and sound technology, but mostly it comes down to the acts. These often consist of amazing and unexpected collaborations that Amstel puts together to celebrate the time and enjoyment that goes into making the best of South African music. On 26 December, Micasa will share the stage with Grammy award-winning Ladysmith Black Mambazo for what is bound to be a truly unforgettable music experience.

Formed more than 50 years ago, Ladysmith Black Mambazo have become one of South Africa’s most prolific recording artists and have received countless accolades worldwide. “They are the perfect example of what happens when you take your time to perfect your craft and as a beer that does the same, Amstel couldn’t be prouder to be featuring them at this year’s event”, says Lance Dodgen, Amstel’s Brand Manager.

Micasa on the other hand have only been around for four years but in that time they have managed to be number one on every major South African radio and music video chart, opened for numerous international acts and have won three of the most highly coveted music awards at the SAMAs, making them a South African music sensation in their own right. Lance comments, “The fact that Micasa started out as three strangers who decided to freestyle together on a stage at a rooftop party and now, just a few years later, they are one of the hottest bands in the country, is testimony to their hard work and dedication, and it makes them a worthy partner to share the stage with a true South African legend.”

The isicathamiya and mbube vocal styles of a choral group merged with the unique urban jazz sounds of a house band, will give festival goers an hour they’ll never forget and one that is guaranteed to be the highlight of the festival.

The Amstel Golden Hour at this year’s Durban Jazz Festival will take place on Friday 26 December at the Main Music festival.

Gagasi FM will kick off its annual “Ila Ngil’ Thola Khona” summer campaign with the Durban Beach Festival this coming Sunday, 30 November 2014, at SunKist Beach Lawns in Durban. Every year in December Gagasi FM tours different places across KwaZulu-Natal hosting a variety of lifestyle and entertainment events as well as CSI activations.

ggsi

Gagasi FM’s Ila Ngil’ Thola Khona kicks off with a beach festival – Gagasi FM

The offcial line-up for the beach festival includes the big names in the local music industry like DJ Tira, Professor, AKA and KO who have dropped new albums. They will be sharing stage with Gagasi FM hip hop and house DJ’s Vumar, Mario, Le Soul, Simtho, DJ Lab, DJ Sonic and I love Mornings host Mzokoloko as MC. DJ Vumar will also broadcast his show, Sunday Sundowners, between 18h00 and 22h00 live from the venue.

Gagasi FM has over the years been very supportive of the up-and-coming KZN artists and, in consistence with that, the beach festival line-up will also include Funky Soul, Abbu, Nag, Kuni, Bhar, Breeze and WTF.

The festival will start at 12h00 and will run until midnight. Tickets will be available at the gate on Sunday for R100 general access and R200 for VIP before 15h00. Thereafter they will be available at R150 general access and R250 for VIP. Picnic baskets and cooler boxes will be allowed before 5pm but bottles will not be allowed. Refreshments will also be sold at the venue.

“We would like to encourage people to arrive early as some of the headline acts will perform early. Our line-up has a good mix in terms of big names as well as up-and-coming artists. The festival will no doubt set the tone for this year’s summer campaign,” says Gagasi FM Marketing Manager, Zippy Ndokweni.

The theme for “Ila Ngil’ Thola Khona” this year is “Khonvoya neGagasi FM this summer” (Join the Gagasi FM convoy this summer). The idea behind the theme is to bring a roadtrip element in between the activations that the station will be doing across the province. Convoys to entertainment or holiday destinations have become a lifestyle symbol within the black middle class and bringing the convoy element to the theme is just a perfect fit.

“Ila Ngil’ Thola Khona is our biggest campaign in our activations calendar and our plan is to grow it to be a brand that will be synonymous with the KZN summer season. In terms of this year’s theme, we are calling on our listeners to join us on a convoy as we move travel throughout KwaZulu-Natal. The black middle class likes to travel, and over the past few years we have seen a trend where roadtrips and convoys have become a lifestyle on their own. So we are aligning the campaign with that space, with activations that will be taking place in various places as touchpoints,” says Ndokweni.

After the beach festival in Durban, the Ila Ngil’ Thola Khona campaign will then move to Port Shepstone and Pietermaritzburg next weekend. Activation details and venues will be announced in due course.

International stars line up to raise funds for Ebola

Posted by radio On November - 27 - 2014 ADD COMMENTS

Top ranking African musicians have lined up to throw weight behind MTN Group’s efforts to fight the Ebola outbreak. Several African artists will collaborate to sing a cover version of ‘We are the World’ to help raise much-needed funds to fight Ebola.

usafor

The collaboration is the first of its kind in Africa in terms of scale and number of artists involved, and will raise additional funds over and above the US$10 million pledge already made by the MTN Group to the African Union. The song will be available as a digital download in the first week of December. It will be available in Full Track, Tru Tone and Caller Tune formats. All proceeds from sales will be donated to the African Union.

Approximately 70 artists, made up mostly of MTN ambassadors and friends from all corners of Africa have confirmed their availability to record. Local artists who have confirmed include Donald, Mafikizolo, Lloyd Cele, Loyiso, Matthew Gold, Elvis Blue, Kurt Darren, The Arrows, MTN Joyous Celebration and Dr. Rebecca Malope. They will be joined by renowned artists from across the continent including Sean Tizzle (Nigeria), Jose Chameleone (Uganda), R2BEES (Ghana), Fally (DRC), Wax Dey (Cameroon), SK Originale (Ghana), Shinsoman (Zimbabwe), Gigi LaMayne (Zimbabwe), Davido (Nigeria), Chidinma (Nigeria), Sound Sultans (Nigeria), K-Cee (Nigeria), Diamond (Tanzania) and Banky W (Nigeria). Lindelani Mkhize is the lead producer of the song.

“Considering that the World Health Organisation (WHO) has stated that there could be as many as 10,000 new EVD (Ebola Virus Desease) cases per week by December 2014, we needed to take immediate action,” says Larry Annetts, Chief Marketing Officer at MTN SA. “A solid and original musical production of this nature is dependent on availability of artists, sufficient time to compose and produce original lyrics and instrumentation as well as adequate time to observe copyright and publishing administration. ‘We are the world’ was readily available for us to utilise for this campaign and has a positive history in raising awareness and funds for socially responsible projects. We believe it will achieve the desired results to assist in efforts to fight Ebola with the support of African artists, businesses and the public.”

Annetts adds: “MTN has always been and remains a proud supporter of South African music and artists. Our history in the sponsorship of awards that recognise local talent and our continuous relationship with various music entities such as MTN Joyous Celebration and Mafikizolo is testament to this. We will continue to support original South African productions and are planning the release of an original song featuring local and African artists in the new year. We will make the necessary announcements in the near future.”

MTN customers can also donate towards the cause by sending ‘Let’s End Ebola’ to 48866. SMS costs R10. MTN customers can download the Full tracks and Tru Tone for R10 or make it their Caller Tune for R3 by dialling *123*55#. Alternatively, the public can logon to www.mtnplay.co.za to download.

“At MTN we are humbled to be part of this initiative where we leverage on mobile telephony and the pervasive power of music to make a positive change. We are also proud to be part of a rich African community that is willing to give its time, skills and creativity for free to be an agent of change in someone else’s life.”

“We are confident that our subscribers in South Africa and across the continent will support this initiative and rally behind us and the artists as we spread this message of hope,” concludes Annetts.
