The old believe in the adage that giving back to the community enables growth.

In that same script, former South African pace bowler Makhaya Ntini officially opened the Makhaya Ntini Academy in Mdantsane, near East London on Tuesday.

The main sponsors of the initiative are Algoa FM radio station and Airports Company South Africa (Acsa) and Bellingham Smith. Algoa FM is a commercial South African radio station established to cater for the needs of the Eastern Cape and the Garden Route of South Africa in the eighties and is still a driving force in the media of the present day.

The station is well famed for its hourly news bulletins coupled with news updates on the half hour mark at peak times during its 24 hour broadcast cycle.

The Makhaya Ntini Academy will add more value to aspiring cricketers. Focus will also be on tertiary education, fitness training, diet planning and nurturing life skills while those cricketers who show the right passion and have the talent will be guided to higher levels in the game.

Psychological assessments and counseling will also feature and Ntini will arrange bursaries and scholarships for deserving youngsters. Ntini set the standard for black cricketers. He was the first black South African to play international cricket and since his debut back in 1997, only four other black cricketers have made it to Test Level.

The Mdingi Express as he is affectionately known as in cricket circles expressed optimism that the academy would go a step further in its quest for success.

“I have long dreamt of having a school of excellence. Someone has to go out there, visit the schools and find the talent which I know is out there. And that someone is me. I will go out there and look for that talent,” said Ntini.

History was created on Sunday 13 July when more than 17,000 runners participated in the second successful ‘Kaya FM 67km Relay for Mandela Day’ creating the biggest corporate relay ever seen in Africa.

kyafmThe day was also a special commemoration as it was the anniversary of the day that Nelson Mandela lost his first son while in prison and was sadly unable to bury him. Fellow Rivonia trialist, Ahmed Kathrada, was present at the start of relay to show his support for Mandela Day.

The event, proudly hosted by the City of Jo’burg, was the result of a noble partnership between Kaya FM and the Nelson Mandela Foundation and was designed to celebrate Madiba’s legacy. Passing the baton between relay teams was a symbolic gesture of comradery, paying it forward and reaching out a hand to those less privileged members of society. Each ten-man team ran 6.7km in honour of the 67 years that the father of our nation gave in service to South Africa.

CEO of the Nelson Mandela Foundation, Sello Hatang, thanked everyone for the phenomenal support showed today. “Madiba’s commitment to service is at the heart of this race and we look forward to growing this event even further in years to come,” he said. “Today should remind us of who we were and who we want to be. If Tata was here, he would be smiling at the effort everyone has put into this day. Funds raised from today’s event will be used to preserve and digitize Nelson Mandela’s papers – the oldest of which dates back to 1929 – for generations to come.”

Nedbank Running Club again took gold in the Men’s open relay category with Monama Pharmacy winning the Women’s open relay title. In the Mixed category Discovery Athletic Club took gold.

Kaya FM MD, Greg Maloka, said he was grateful for the amazing support of the station and this relay. “Today has been a remarkable event that honours the work of our Tata and celebrates 20 years of freedom. This event is about so much more than the relay – it is about the human spirit. Kaya FM proudly puts the power of radio behind Madiba’s legacy.”

“We are immensely proud that the Moretele Park Tribute Concert is now widely regarded as being the hottest springtime party in the country,” says Leonard Sithole of Drakensberg Promotions.

“This year’s event is a particularly special occasion for us, because it gives us the opportunity to reflect on how far we have come as a country in the two decades since the dawn of democracy – but also

BLK JKS support Foo Fighters

Posted by radio On June - 24 - 2014 ADD COMMENTS

Big Concerts have announced that Foo Fighters have confirmed two stadium dates for December. This will be the first time that Foo Fighters will perform in South Africa. Supporting acts include BLK JKS and Kaiser Chiefs. The band will be performing Cape Town on Wednesday, 10 December before heading to Johannesburg to perform on Saturday, 13 December.

foo fight

Foo Fighters are Dave Grohl, Taylor Hawkins, Nate Mendel, Chris Shiflett and Pat Smear. Since debuting in 1995 with their classic self-titled first album, Foo Fighters have steadily grown into the last great American arena/stadium rock band. 2011’s Wasting Light debuted at number one in the U.S. and 11 other countries while their catalogue, which also includes The Colour & The Shape (1997), There Is Nothing Left To Lose (1999), One By One (2002), In Your Honor (2005), and Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace (2007), has raked in 11 Grammy Awards, sold over 25 million copies worldwide.

The band’s eighth studio album is due for release in November and will be preceded by the premiere of Sonic Highways, a Grohl-directed episodic series documenting the eight-city odyssey during which the album was recorded. If Grohl’s 2013 directorial debut, the Grammy-winning Sound City was a celebration of the human element in music, Sonic Highways is, in its director’s words, “a chronicling of a journey to unravel the fabric of our musical identity… not only the making of our most ambitious album …
Sound City on steroids”.

The South African tour dates are as follows:

Cape Town: Wednesday, 10 December at Cape Town Stadium; and
Johannesburg: Saturday, 13 December at FNB Stadium

Tickets for both dates go on sale on Thursday, 26 June at 09:00. Tickets can be purchased via Computicket.

Foo Fighters is presented by 5FM and M-Net. Another Big Concerts Experience.
