Ligwalagwala FM celebrates 31yrs in style

Posted by radio On April - 30 - 2013 ADD COMMENTS

31 is the number of the year for Ligwalagwala FM. The station celebrates 31 years of prime broadcasting this year in an industry that is increasingly getting competitive. It has become customary for the station to make the loyal listeners part of the celebrations. As such, listeners have been winning R 3 100 every weekday on KusileMzansi with Madumane for a second month running now.

A day in a listener’s history is the name for the competition where listeners sms their most memorable day in their history in one line to win. The biggest winner is yet to come. All ears will be tuned to KusileMzansi on Tuesday 30 April to hear who gets the big prize. One lucky listener will walk away with the prestigious prize of R 31 000 cash. A call was made in March for listeners to write to the station detailing how their station has made a difference in their lives.

Over 800 letters were received and thoroughly scrutinized by a panel of experts who narrowed the entries down to a top 5. A verification process followed shortly thereafter to ensure the authenticity of the stories written by the listeners who entered. Only one out of the 800 odd entries will win the grand prize. 30 April is the D-day.

These on air activations will be accompanied by wide-spread Outside Broadcasts and events that will be taken to the listeners. The Launchpad will take place at Nelcity building rooftop parking lot in Nelspruit on Friday May 03. This is the “Bewukuphi Party?” where we’ll take listeners back in time with artists like Mdu and Mashamplana live on stage. Entrance is set at R 80 and tickets will be sold at the entrance.

“We deem it necessary to celebrate fully with our listeners and ensure that they benefit from the celebration. Not only are we empowering the listeners financially but we are going to ensure that we take the birthday celebration to their area of residence, thus engaging them in their comfort zone and learning more about who they are”, said Ligwalagwala FM Station Manager Rio Mabunda.

The birthday celebration will be going to the listeners in a form of outside broadcasts where listeners will still get to dance with the station in their own backyard. Stay tuned to find out when the station will invade your area.

South African house sensation Zakes Bantwini (@ZakesBantwiniSA) and Nigerian high life guru Flavour (@2niteFlavour) are to join the “all star” line-up at MTV Africa All Stars – KwaZulu-Natal, the sensational open-air concert brought to you by MTV Base (DStv Channel 322) and KZN Province.

Bantwini and Flavour will join US entertainment icon and multi-platinum hip hop star turned reggae artist Snoop Lion (@SnoopLion) aka Snoop Dogg, at the 5-hour open air concert at the stunning Moses Mabhida Stadium, People’s Park Durban on 18 May.

Zakes Bantwini is without a doubt South Africa’s most prolific live performer: there is not a single stage in South Africa that this music mogul and leading light on the SA music scene has not killed! His songs Wasting My Time, Bum Bum and most recently Karolina have been burning up airwaves across the continent and have all been remixed by some of the biggest names in house.

Zakes is also one of the choirmasters in the running for top honours and a cash prize in Mzansi Magic’s hit show, Clash of the Choirs. Viewers can now vote for their favourite choir by SMSing the name of the team – Team Zakes, Team Khaya or Team Zwai – to 33405. The winner will be announced at the finale on Sunday, 21 April at 17:30 on Mzansi Magic.

Joining Zakes at the MTV Africa All Stars will be high-life artist Flavour N’abania, aka Chinedu Okoli. After his continental smash hit Nwa Baby Remix and his massively successful collaborations with Tiwa Savage and Fally Ipupa, Flavour continues to be Africa’s most requested artist, regularly collecting frequent flyer miles whilst jetting across the continent and as far afield as USA and Europe. He’s also become a regular fixture in Dubai and the Far East.

Speaking on behalf of MTV Base, Alex Okosi, Senior Vice President & Managing Director, Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN) Africa, commented, “We are delighted to welcome two such popular artists as Zakes Bantwini and Flavour to Durban’s shores for MTV Africa All Stars – KwaZulu-Natal. With Snoop Lion already confirmed, all eyes are going to be focused on KwaZulu-Natal as we put our hearts and souls into making this the music event of the year!”

Voice of modern reason and power

Acclaimed academic Nicholas Nassim Taleb, uses a metaphor that describes an event that is a surprise (to the observer) and has a major effect in his book, The Black Swan. This rationale is easily pinned to the wall in the advent of Power FM. The station which is in the throes of launching as the nation’s first black owned talk radio station, is pioneered by MSG Afrika Investment Holdings chief executive, Given Mkhari. The over stretch of media rhetoric has not fallen short of calling the 39 year old a barrage of titles from mogul to magnate, which comes as warranted if his resume is  anything to ram the table about.

Speculations ran amock when Eusebius McKaiser announced his resignation from Primedia’s 702 and succeeded it with a hint that he might be joining Mkhari’s team. As a widely featured political analyst, bestselling author and an admirably entertaining commentator; the knee jerk to most has been that Power FM’s brand will be of a ‘no favour’ make. Closely kept to chest, the station’s cards hold a royal flush of also having Lupi Ngcayisa on board.

Mkhari’s exponential leap has been the stuff of lores, his salad days fundamentally started at Turf radio which was launched by him and lifetime business partner Simphiwe Mdlalose. His rise not showing any sign of being capped, Mkhari the won a bursary to study at Bard University in the US under the mentorship of the late Chinua Achebe. The local radio space has heard him at Kaya FM, Metro FM to eventually giving Limpopo a bolster with the launch of the commercial Capricorn FM.

Power FM’s is tipped to be progressive and unapologetic about holding leaders accountable – be they in government, civil society, the workplace or the home. Its focus on contemporary issues facing black 25-49 year old urban South Africans who are political, frank and able to have fun; is waited upon with bated breath from punters all around. Will there be enough power to critique the black experience? All eyes and ears are stark focused whether this black swan will take an enduring flight.

Field day for industry at MTN Radio Awards

Posted by radio On April - 15 - 2013 ADD COMMENTS

[By: Kagiso Mnisi]

The MTN Radio Awards held at the Sandton convention Centre on the 13th March had all the expected pomp with a flurry of industry players and celebrities in attendance. In its fourth year running, Rich Mkhondo, Executive: Corporate Affairs at MTN Group, gave word that  “MTN’s reason for coming on board for the fourth consecutive year as title sponsor of the Radio Awards is because the importance of the medium is clear”. Mkhondo also said, “radio allows us to learn what is going on around us and keeps the nation informed – and MTN sees the importance of supporting its growth.”

The bragging rights to commercial station of the year were awarded to Kaya FM. The category was hotly contested with other nominees including 5FM, 567 Cape Talk, East Coast Radio and Talk Radio 702 coming to the party. The Kaya FM stable also clinched “Best Breakfast Show” for 180 with Bob, “Best Night Time Show” hosted by Mapaseka Mokwele and the meaty “Best News and Actuality” by John Perlman.

Kaya FM Crew celebrating the award

A heartfelt and rapturous reception was shown by the crowd when it was announced that Barney Simon had scooped the accolade for “Best Daytime Presenter” on Jacaranda FM. Indicative of homage paid to the seasoned Simon, his acceptance of the award evoked the rockstardom he has imbued over the years. Tuks FM proved its mettle as winner in the categories of “Campus Station of the Year”, “Best Breakfast Presenter” (Rob Forbes), “Best Daytime Presenter” (Alex Caige) and “Best News Bulletin Reader” (Anton Meijer). The campus radio station lived up to position as a hotbed of rising talent, more so it proved itself a strong contender in the industry, one that can take on giants as well.

Ukhozi FM reared its head as station of the year under the PBS banner, however its domineering stature as clincher to most awards (as seen in the past), was toned down signaling the level of fierceness from other stations. The hostess to the awards, Anele Mdoda, kept the ceremony livened up with her signature comical jabs. She at some point made reference to SABC’s non existing clarity on leadership which sparked both applause and uncontained laughter. While riding the wave, Mdoda also put Given Mkhari under the spotlight in regards to the soon-to-air Power FM. Steadfast and forthright, Mkhari did not hesitate to take up the gauntlet is saying that the station “will be a hard hitter and formidable rival to those already in the game”.

This is what some industry heads had to say about the awards:
