Ligwalagwala FM dresses 80 school kids

80 Learners expressed joy and excitement as the “pride of the nation” Ligwalagwala FM took an ample amount of school uniforms to 4 different schools in the Lowveld. This was part of the Back to School campaign that the station hosts annually to uplift the lives of children. The schools that received the uniform were, Makhosana Manzini High School Mkhuhlu, Thembeka High School Kanyamazane, Zikodze Secondary School Gutshwa and M C Zitha Combined School Nkomazi.


A team of people from the station including station DJs, The Angel of the Airwave, Lanyambose, The Bigzill, Drama Queen, Fortune Ntekati and T-Boy travelled to the schools to surprise the leaners with a handful of school uniform on the week of 18 February 2013. All the schools gave the team a warm welcome as some of the leaners expressed their joy through dance and music.


“We were over joyed when Ligwalagwala FM contacted the school wanting to donate school uniform to some of our leaners, we have needy children with parents who are unable to provide due to unemployment and some of our leaners do not have parents. We wish the station all the best and hope that it will proper in all that it does,” said Mrs Nyalunga, Principal, Zikodze Secondary School, Gutshwa.


“The station would like to thank its listeners for identifying these schools and wishes to continue working with its listeners in uplifting the lives of the disadvantaged,” said Rio Mabunda, Station Manager.

ABN Productions to host a pre-BRICS summit session

ABN Productions, in partnership with CNBC Africa, Brand South Africa and South African Tourism will host a networking session for delegates on the eve of the BRICS Summit taking place in Durban. The session will be held at the Hilton hotel in Durban on 25 March 2013, under the theme ‘BRICS and Africa – the Bankable Ties’.

The session will provide attendees with a platform to discuss strategic objectives on business opportunities, economic development and identify key areas that representatives from different countries can work together on.


“South Africa’s hosting of BRICS shows the country’s strategic influence in the telling of Africa’s economic regeneration,’’ said Roberta Naidoo, ABN Group Managing Director.“South Africa’s role not just in the economic arena, but also in peace, security and reconstruction on the continent, is a story CNBC Africa wants to capture critically from a variety of perspectives.”

Over 3,000 delegates are expected to attend the summit to be held on March 26 and 27. The Fifth BRICS Summit marks the end of the first cycle of high-level meetings since the first summit was hosted by the Russian Federation in 2009.

Stage is set for the first SAMRO Wawela Music Awards

SAMRO is raising the curtain on the first annual Wawela Music Awards, putting the best of South Africa’s global breakthrough acts on show. 

Wawela is a Zulu word that means “go beyond”, and no phrase could be more fitting for the inaugural Wawela Music Awards, proudly brought to you by SAMRO, which celebrate South African music that has done just that: gone beyond our borders and put our tunes on the international agenda. 


There’s no doubt SA music is on a mission. Never before have we had so many of our own composers, songwriters and performers making their mark as loud and proud South African music ambassadors all over the world. SAMRO believes it’s time these musicians are rewarded with as much applause from South Africa as they receive internationally. The first annual Wawela Music Awards ceremony will take place in Johannesburg on Friday, 28 June 2013.  These awards are inspired by South African music creators’ accomplishments on the international stage. They will also pay homage to the legends of local music who have paved the way to this point through their extraordinary lifetime achievements. 


So how does it work? The awards are open to SAMRO members only, and only those who have had their work featured outside the borders of South Africa for the period 1 January 2011 to 31 December 2011. Composers will be selected across a range of genres, styles and categories. The judging panel will also hand out a number of special awards.  


The winners of the inaugural Wawela Music Awards will be those musicians who have truly “gone beyond” – whose music has broken through and made an impact internationally. Certain categories will be judged on statistical performance, based on sales and radio play in international markets, while other awards will be decided on merit by a panel of respected and experienced industry professionals.

Listeners’ votes count in MTN Radio Awards

Radio listeners are once again invited to vote for their favourite radio station in the MTN Radio Awards, the only awards programme in South Africa which promotes and recognises excellence in radio.


Votes for the My Station Awards are now open, giving listeners the opportunity to make their voices heard in the annual event. Recognition is given to two radio stations, one for the most listener votes, and another for the most number of votes as a ratio against their RAMS audience numbers. Ukhozi FM (highest RAMS audience) and Radio Islam (most listener votes) were the most popular stations among listeners at last year’s awards.


Each radio station participates in the My Station Awards voluntarily and listeners vote by sending their station’s code via SMS to 40616 (Standard SMS rates apply). One lucky voter stands a chance to win an amazing prize which includes two tickets to the MTN Radio Awards banquet, a smartphone, R500 worth of MTN airtime, and an all-expenses paid trip for two to the 19th MTN SAMA Awards in May.

CNBC Africa to broadcast the budget speech live

Colour the course with the Algoa FM charity golf day

An education-focussed organisation has been selected by Algoa FM as the beneficiary of the annual Algoa FM Summer Charity Golf day, which will be taking place on Thursday, March 7 at the Humewood golf club in Port Elizabeth.
Funds raised by the charity event will go towards building a centre for those involved in early childhood education in the Gqebera (Walmer) township run by KICK.
EARLY INSPIRATION runs a training programme for under-equipped teachers, and is currently busy training the teachers in at least 30 poorly resourced early childhood education facilities in the township.

It is estimated that around 40 per cent of young children in South Africa have not mastered the foundational concepts of learning required before going to school, according to KICK president Ryan Hutton. KICK’s chief executive officer Lauren Stretch, says “the conditions staff face daily in the centres is frightening – teachers work from unsafe, under-resourced structures which are often a health hazard.
“In most cases children are receiving only one meal a day, which is provided by the ECD Centre. Most teachers have 40 children in their care and not only need to teach these children foundational concepts of cognitive development, but also provide love, compassion, nutrition, support, discipline, structure and care for these children.
“KICK would like to provide schools with a safe, secure, well-resourced facility to enable only the best teaching for these young children”.

The Algoa FM Summer Charity Golf Day is being taken to a “new level,” in order to raise as much as possible for this worthy cause says managing director Dave Tiltmann.
The format will be a “fourball betterball,” and Algoa FM will be giving away R15 000 airtime to the corporate team that goes the extra mile at their sponsored tee or green, according to Tiltmann.

Fourball bookings for the corporate day are initially allocated to companies which sponsor tees/ greens or specified areas. Thereafter, fourballs are allocated according to the value of prizes or prize money or donations. “This is both a worthy cause and an investment in the future of the youth and business in Nelson Mandela Bay,” says Tiltmann.

MTN Radio Awards entries have closed, and it is now up to the Adjudication Panel to review and score the submissions. The 2013 edition of the awards has seen a significant increase in the number of entries submitted for the various categories. “With the growth in interest in the MTN Radio Awards, we have substantially overshot our objective of attracting 1 000 entries,” says Lance Rothschild, CEO of the MTN Radio Awards. “However more important than the number of entries is the fact that there was a 33% increase in the number of stations that submitted entries, taking the number of stations eligible for an award up to 68,” adds Rothschild.


Submissions will now be sent to the adjudicators to review them over the next four weeks. The panel includes a broad cross section of people with substantial radio experience, and a passion for- and innate knowledge of- radio. “In response to our call for recommendations for adjudicators, we received a substantial amount of input from within the industry and even members of the public. I believe we have a well-balanced panel, and I am keenly looking forward to see results of their deliberations over the coming weeks,” says Rothschild.


Adjudication tasks have been allocated to each individual panellist, with painstaking care taken to ensure there are no conflicts of interest. That means certain adjudicators from within the radio industry will not review entries in categories within which they operate. In addition, if there is possible conflict of interest with any adjudicator and a particular entry, the adjudicator does not score that entry. As all scores are averaged, no entry will be prejudiced.

Christmas is almost upon us and so is the much awaited Joyous Celebration 17th Musical Miracle in partnership with MTN. It is a magical show happening this Saturday, 15th December 2012, showcasing more than just an ordinary talented South African choir, it will be a full concert, one which has been crafted through hard work and dedication to make it the success that it is needs to be.

 For the Joyous Celebration team and fans this concert will be a reminder as to why Joyous Celebration simply is joyous, it will be a reminder of a dream between three friends, Jabu Hlongwane, Lindelani Mkhize and Mthunzi Namba from Kwa-Zulu Natal, and the evolution of how Joyous Celebration  evolved into a remarkably large brand. The choir has carved an identifiable footprint in South African history; it was established in 1994 when Nelson Mandela became the first president of a democratic South Africa. “The initial purpose was to celebrate the peaceful voting process through music” Goodman Hlongwane of Joyous Celebration states. Joyous Celebration simply fit in with the celebrations of a new South Africa through linking their musical talents with the significance of that year by hosting their very first Joyous Celebration show. Joyous Celebration has over the years, produced over the top performances in all their concerts and the 17th Live Music Miracle will do nothing short of exceeding the standards the choir has become renowned for.

 Performing is not only about blending melody with voices, but about pleasing the crowd, this is what makes Joyous Celebration stand out from the many other gospel choirs that one would ever see perform live on stage.  Their angelic voices, punctual and lively band team up to create an electrifying artistic presentation of what gospel music should sound like. According to Goodman Hlongwane, “No matter who you are you will be impacted by the presentation of music that is always fresh and professionally done.” The choir has been promoting their new album ‘Joyous Rewind’, an album set to please old and new fans as well as share some old time gospel favourites.

Joyous Celebration 17 will not only be a follow up on their CD and DVD collections but it will showcase a sound much more mature when compared to their previous offerings. A must see is the new technology and upgraded sound system that will redefine the extraordinary  style of performance that Joyous Celebration is known for.

The highlight of 2012 for most gospel music lovers this festive season will be the biggest presentation of quality music by Joyous Celebration, taking place at Rhema Ministries in Randburg. When invited to the launch of a gospel choir, I had my misgivings. Though the invitation said that the choir was young and interested in combining traditional gospel with their newer, younger musical tastes, I was still unconvinced. Only to be very pleasantly surprised by Gospel Goes Beyond.

 Unlike any other launch, this one began early, with complimentary non-alcoholic drinks for the attendees (there was a bar available for those who so wished). Located in the Yamaha Theatre, the gathering was small with a rare sense of community among the guests. Though the surroundings were glamorous, the local celebrities were real and engaging.

 The choir itself is made up of fourteen young singers from all over South Africa and their gospel rendition of Eminem’s Lose Yourself certainly points toward their desire to give gospel a fresher sound. Despite this, they held true to the idea of a gospel choir. Their timing was impeccable and their harmonies well-placed and rehearsed, combining to deliver a spectacular choral performance.

Many of their songs incorporated interesting rhythms, using vocals to dictate the beat and the flow of songs instead of relying on traditional percussions. This technical proficiency can be directly attributed to Nqobile Sibeko of Joyous Celebration, who also wrote, composed and produced all songs on the upcoming album. The band was made up of a keyboard, a set of drums, a bass, two bongo drums and an electric guitar. Their original songs have a distinctly funk feeling to them, encouraging members of the audience to get up and dance (which they did, co-ordinating a “bus” and bringing the party to the front of the stage).

 In the first half of the launch, Reggie Hufkie included religious rap in each song. The ladies of the choir were all clad in stylish purple numbers, as a professional choir would be, swaying and snapping in unison. The sheer togetherness of their performance was impressive.

The choir was joined by Kay-Leigh O’Donovan, Omen and Howza of Peanut Gallery, covering 4 Non Blondes’ What’s Up? O’Donovan’s vocals were powerful and Peanut Gallery certainly raised the roof.

Ernie Smith, a two-time SAMA winner and four-time KORA nominee, was the highlighted guest star of the launch. With guitar that made you want to cry and dance at the same time, an impossibly funky style and a voice made of gold, we were all sold. When joined on stage once more by GGB, we were sold again by their beautiful rendition of Love Don’t Hurt Me, easing into an acappella chorus near the end of the song that moved every person present. 

The rest of the launch was comprised of one or two choir members leading individual songs, belting out catchy tunes in powerful voices. The choir worked hard to present a united front by giving each member an equal opportunity to shine in their own right, while not specifically promoting one member above another.

Fezi Hlatshwayo, founder of Gospel Goes Beyond, ended of the launch with a speech. “Should I speak as a man of God or a businessman? This time next year, at five past nine, GGB will not look the same, they won’t sound the same and they won’t just be playing at the Yamaha theatre but bigger things. I have a feeling in my heart. That’s me speaking as a man of God.” He called on all present businessmen to support these talented young people and promised special rates for all present between January and April. He challenged all media to put GGB on high rotation. “Let’s get these guys rolling.”

Their full-length album will be available next year, with tracks like “Nkosi Impilo Yami”, “I’m Free” and “Down on My Knees”. I strongly recommend you keep an eye out for these talented young musicians and their project to give gospel in South Africa a new face.

8ta surprised Brickfields Festival fans by hosting not one but two Brickfields Music Festivals this year. Describing itself as a “burgeoning inner city soirée”.Brickfields Music Festival provides music-loving South Africans with a line-up rivalling that of established local music festivals, showcasing the best local talent from all over the country in a one-day, four-stage event.

 After its inception in November 2011, the festival has only gained followers. The music manages to speak to more than one market in South Africa while maintaining an overall ‘essence’ that makes the young people go crazy. The four-stages scheme allows multiple artists to be showcased, with each stage being dedicated to providing a certain type of music. The Live Stage features all live bands while the TOY TOY, Carfax and Mielie Beat Bar stages offer performances from loved local DJs. This scheme manages to cater to the few who like only one type of music as well as the many who want to experience a real variety, available throughout the festival by just walking from one stage to the next.

 Capitalising on the Newtown movement that is spreading across Johannesburg, the venue is as interesting as the line-up. The entrance is situated in a large alleyway, giving the Brickfields name a tangible appearance with contemporary-grunge décor and buildings. Though the festival is held in Johannesburg inner-city, the Brickfields team went to lengths to give the festival that out-of-town feeling, with the bar area resting on fake green grass (a pleasant contrast to the rainy weather) and plastic-covered hay bales providing comfortable seating.

With a break in the gloomy clouds, the Live Stage opened up the day’s festivities with a performance from Soweto-based band BCUC (Bantu Continua Uhuru Consciousness). They describe their sound as “indigenous funky soul”, drawing from tribal instrumentation and beats to accent their portrayal of modern South Africa as a country “rich in tradition, rituals and beliefs.” Frontman Jovi’s performance could be called nothing short of colourful. Vibrating with passion, he careened around stage, transferring his love and enthusiasm for their music to the audience. Kgomotso added her incredible vocals to the set, injecting the music with a soulful feeling. The drums, the whistles, the tambourines and the slow blues guitar all came together in a unique, inspiringly cultural relationship that brought to mind memories of dark skies, fires and a time when music was a story.

 Shortstraw brought the indie to Brickfields. Their sound was unique, contagious and made you want to get your feet moving. The catchy pop influences on their music didn’t add up to a generic sound, combining with their folk-indie instrumentals and their enthusiastic performance to create a happy-go-lucky atmosphere. With songs that spoke to the audience’s every day experience, Shortstraw certainly made an impressive Brickfields debut.

Shadowclub, one of the main attractions, surprised the crowd by announcing that they would be playing a few songs from their upcoming album, due next year. The Shadowclub sound combines rock and jazz, with emotional vocals from frontman Jacques and challenging guitar riffs. The band drew in a dancing, jiving crowd with their 6pm slot, setting the tone for the night with music that is impossible to resist. MC Jon Savage introduced the band alternatively as “Jacques And The Pants”, taking his inspiration from Jacques’ optical black-and-white leggings, covered in palm trees.Jon Savage then took the stage with Tumi and his band Yesterday’s Pupil. Tumi’s vocals were more moving than most, communicating passions and pains from deep within. Standing on stage playing her bass, Tumi managed to enchant. Yesterday’s Pupil added their alternative rock sounds to her R&B lyrics and came out with a riveting combination that was both light-hearted and meaningful.


Unfortunately, due to the rain, the Live Stage was completely shut down for the rest of the night. Cape Town’s Machineri and Spoek Mathambo played intimate sets in the 8ta VIP lounge, located next to the main bar area. Other main acts Van Coke Kartel and Beast were cancelled, due to risks from the wet equipment.

 The TOY TOY stage, on the other hand, saw most of the rest of action. Felix Laband played to hoards of devoted fans, yet again sealing his status as one of the best local DJs. Other anticipated acts filled up the late hours, seeing performances from Craig Massive, Chinxxx and Monique Pascal of Pascal and Pearce.

As a whole, the festival was an enormous success. We hope to see an even better line-up next year with fewer weather interruptions. The 3rd Brickfields Music Festival has certainly convinced me to become a staple fan.
