Simphiwe Dana – One Night at The Lyric Theatre

Already lauded as one of the most important singers, cultural activists and fashion icons of our time, Ms. Dana has yet to grace the series that has seen the likes of Oliver Mtukudzi, Thandiswa Mazwai and The Soil being booked.

Simphiwe Dana is more than just a singer – since her debut release Zandisilie in 2004, anyone who heard her music or encountered her on stage has been moved by her fierce determination and grit to not only embed herself into the hearts of her fans through song, but to constantly give back to South Africa at large with her awareness of socio-economic challenges faced in the various communities.  She is a voice for the voiceless and shakes political landscapes, whilst the natural God-given talent of her voice and song-writing seem to come as a natural conduit to compliment her personal and more heartfelt passions.

 

With this kind of path was impossible to stop the force that was Simphiwe Dana.  From her debut album raking in numerous awards and instantly being released in Europe, to becoming the number one selling Music artist on the German World Music Charts and number three on the European Music Charts with her album Kulture Noir, musically she has yet to step a foot wrong.

 

Simphiwe was also named ‘African Woman Of The Year’ in 2016 by New African Woman alongside the likes of artist Esther Mahlangu, athlete Caster Semenya and actress Lupito Nyong’o.  She strives to create conversation that will spark change and is seen as one of the leading and most impactful women in African arts and culture.  In fact so profound is Simphiwe Dana’s influence that her music has been incorporated into the curriculum at Oxford University, no small feat for even the most established of musician considering that to date Simphiwe has only released 4 studio albums and 2 Live DVD’s.

 

She has just recently completed the recording of what she states to be a dream come true in “The Simphiwe Dana Symphony Experience”, which featured international guests Asa and Concha Buika as well as a 60-piece orchestra.  Simphiwe opened the floor to an auspicious audience including Winnie Madikizela-Mandela and a host of other awe-struck guests.  The DVD recording is an exceptional production and a true testament to the multi-talented aspects of this stars’ personality.

 

Simphiwe, known for her grace and conviction, also serves as the first global African ambassador for Amnesty International and the African Union’s Africa Re-imagined Creative Hub (ARCH), a programme that is dedicated to establishing how the arts, culture and heritage sectors can contribute to the AU’s Agenda 2063.  Simphiwe continues to put into action her strong beliefs about socio-economic development and was appointed the ambassador for the Primestars 2015 ‘Step Up 2 A Start Up’ programme which focused on educating grade 10 to 12 pupils on how to become successful entrepreneurs.

 

Thirteen years into her career, Simphiwe Dana remains a hurricane of success, enlightenment, upliftment and soul-stirring entertainment.  Although with the power of her work it seems fickle to even mention her outstanding fashion sense and beauty, there is no denying that the package that encompasses this star is as monumental as the sum of her shine.  Simphiwe Dana is without a doubt, a true queen.

SABC to launch “The Key to Success” campaign

The South African Broadcasting Corporation’s SABC Education division, will be launching a campaign called ‘The Key to Success’, on Thursday, 28 September 2017 from 07:00 – 09:00, at SABC Auckland Park and in all the other SABC provincial offices.

 

The campaign will be an extension of the SABC Education Pay-Off Line: “Enriching minds. Enriching lives”. Head of Education, Danie Swart, said “The Key to Success campaign aims to solidify SABC Education’s identity as the leader in providing educational TV (SABC 1, 2 and 3), radio, web and new media content, that not only informs but entertains as well”.

SABC Education’s content, gathered from a wide range of educational subjects, contributes to a rich cultural shared South African identity.

 

The campaign will enhance the current SABC Education offering to its target audience and deliver on its promise of great compelling educational programmes for diverse audiences in South Africa and the rest of Africa.

 

SABC Education’s programming and services reach most South Africans and is recognised nationally and internationally for setting standards in educational broadcasting. (Can we name some awards that we may have won in this regard? Skeem Saam, 100% Youth and Each one Teach One have won awards. ) Some programmes are controversial, some not, but all programmes are of excellent quality and meet the diverse needs of audiences ranging from small children to adults.

Launching of the new edition of Digital Africa, an innovation competition to take up the challenge of digital transition in Africa

For the 40th birthday of Proparco, the subsidiary of the Agence Française de Développement (AFD, French Development Agency) (www.AFD.fr) focused on private sector, AFD, Bpifrance (www.Bpifrance.fr) and the La French Tech (www.LaFrenchTech.com) have launched on 19 September the second edition of Digital Africa, a startup competition and digital innovation to support sustainable development in Africa. The first edition of the Digital Africa challenge, launched in October 2016, received more than 500 applications and rewarded 10 start-ups which convinced the judging panel on the potential impact of their innovation. Building on this success, AFD, Bpifrance and La French Tech have decided to renew the experience with the objective of offering a long-term support to the emergence of mature and solid digital ecosystems, catalysers of new economic opportunities.

Digital technology, a great accelerator of Africa’s development 

Digital revolution is transforming the African continent. It’s an innovative catalyst that revolutionizes economies and societies. Ecology, energy, culture, education, artistic creation, governance, and media: digital technology has a transversal and multiplying impact in all those key sectors.

A fully customized program 

All the startup winners of this second edition of the Digital Africa challenge will benefit from a high visibility and access an international network of partners, clients and investors. They will be part of a community that gathers the best talents of digital innovation in Africa and for Africa, in order to share experiences and good practices.

The 5 African winning startups will be accompanied by the AFD through an “acceleration pack”, a customizable, technical and financial support up to a 30.000 euros value.

The 5 French winning startups will be accompanied by Bpifrance up to a 10.000 euros value support pack to strengthen their expertise and develop new opportunities on the African continent: Bpifrance Université training, networking and discovery trip to Abidjan and Cape Town with the French entrepreneurs community in the French Tech Hubs.

What are the selection criteria? 

For the second edition of Digital Africa, startups are invited to propose innovative projects linked to the following themes:

  • Territory (urban challenge, rural transformation, and Smart City etc.)
  • Citizenship (e-government, civic engagement, activism, and alternative media etc.)
  • Knowledge and creativity (education, formation, creative and cultural industries etc.)
  • Environment and climate (green tech, clean tech, sustainable transportations, blue economy, and renewable energies etc.)

The relevance of the solutions proposed, their feasibility, sustainability and potential impact will be key criteria in the selection process divided in several steps:

  • An extensive analysis of the projects, of their innovative nature and of their business model;
  • A review of the pre-selected projects by AFD and Bpifrance experts;
  • A final selection by a jury composed by experts of the technological and entrepreneurial ecosystem in Africa.

Major Gaming industry leaders confirmed to speak at the world class Gaming Africa Conference in Johannesburg

Radio 2000 celebrates the nation’s diversity and is encouraging all South African’s to unite and be open to learn more about our different African cultures. As part of Heritage and Tourism month, Radio 2000 invited 14 African countries to join in early Heritage Day celebrations at the SABC offices in Auckland Park on Thursday, 21 September 2017 from 9AM – 3PM. The objective of the day is to showcase the best in African culture through the arts, music and fashion and celebrate the myriad of cultures that South Africa is home to.

On air Radio 2000 will cover the festivities; Emlanjeni hosted by KG Moeketsi (9h00 – 12h00) and Lunch on 2000 (12h00-15h00) with Bertha Charuma. During the shows, listeners can learn about not only South African culture but also more about African heritage that spans our borders. Every Thursday Emlanjeni’s theme for the show is called Extraordinary Thursdays. This is an opportunity to listen to great South Africans that are doing extraordinary things in our country.
