ICASA moves to enquire PayTV market

Posted by radio On August - 29 - 2017 ADD COMMENTS

The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) has published a Discussion Document in Government Gazette NO 41070 to solicit written representations in respect of an inquiry into Subscription Television Broadcasting Services.

The document sets out the Authority’s preliminary  consideration of subscription television broadcasting services in South Africa, and seeks stakeholders’ inputs including in respect of the definition of markets and market segments, the effectiveness of competition in the relevant markets, a determination of licensees with significant market power, and possible appropriate pro-competitive licence conditions that may be imposed.

The document follows General Notices published by the Authority in July and September 2016, respectively, giving notice of its intention to conduct an inquiry into the Subscription Television Broadcasting Services.

Following public consultation processes, including public hearings and a draft findings document, the Authority will publish a Findings Document, which may result in the Authority developing regulations.

Interested stakeholders have until 31 October 2017 to make their written submissions to be considered by ICASA in developing the draft findings report.

Since Showmax was launched two years ago, new functionality such as downloads, profiles, parental controls, support for AirPlay and Chromecast, and bandwidth capping has been rolled out on a regular basis.

More recently, Showmax was added to the DStv Explora and Android TV platforms. Multiple integrations for voucher payment, mobile payment, and add-to-bill have also been completed with banks and telcos. The addition of the Xbox One app is the latest step in the continued development of Showmax.

To get the Showmax app on the Xbox One:

If you’ve not done so already, sign up for Showmax via www.showmax.com. There’s a no-risk 14-day free trial. Showmax is not a contract – it’s simply paid on a month to month basis and can be cancelled any time.

You’ll need the email address and password you use to sign up for Showmax to sign in on the Xbox One.

DStv Now breaks records with The Money Fight

Posted by radio On August - 28 - 2017 ADD COMMENTS

DStv Now has broken all previous records with the live stream of The Money Fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr and Conor McGregor. The daily live stream audience peaked at 40% above any previous high on the DStv Now platform, including those driven by events in traditional “prime time”.

Live sport has been one of the main drivers of growth for DStv Now. With its unrivalled and exclusive sports offering of up to 12 live streaming SuperSport channels, DStv Now has grown monthly usage more than 50% in just three months and has doubled in the last six months. To put the growth of live streaming on DStv Now in context, the Money Fight audience was 30 times larger than that for the Mayweather vs Pacquiao live stream just two years ago.

And it wasn’t just the main event which drove up audience numbers. Almost as many fans visited the live stream for the build-up and undercard as the main event, while many others used Catch Up in the DStv Now app to view the fight at a more civilized hour or watched the “All Access” documentary. The Fight coverage started at 03:00 CAT, with the main event starting just before 06:00 CAT. Users tuned in on their decoders, or the DStv Now website and APP (iOS and Android).

Worldwide, the fight between the boxing superstar and the MMA phenomenon was mostly available on a “pay per view” basis. However, SuperSport made sure DStv Premium customers across Sub-Saharan Africa could view The Fight live, at no extra cost.

And it’s not just once-off boxing spectaculars that are big on DStv Now. In the past two weekends, DStv Now users have had exclusive live streaming access to The Rugby Championship. The first of two games between South Africa and Argentina resulted in the second highest live streaming numbers seen to date on DStv’s online platforms. These exclusive live streaming events create unprecedented excitement and value for DStv Premium customers.

There have been many other drivers for the stellar growth in DStv Now usage. Nineteen additional live streaming channels have been added since April 2017, bringing the Premium offer to more than 70 channels, as well as making the service available to Compact and Compact Plus subscribers in recent months.

“Exclusive live sport is a key drawcard for our customers,” says Graeme Cumming, head of DStv Digital Media. “We were proud to be able to stream The Money Fight live to our Premium customers at no extra cost”.

DStv Now can be accessed via the app for tablets and smartphones, or online at now.dstv.com

The award, which aims to celebrate the achievements of future creatives as they redefine creativity in the mobile era, was created in partnership with Facebook and The Nelson Mandela Foundation

The Facebook Challenge (www.Facebook.com), an official Loerie Award in the Student category, was won this year by three students from AAA School of Advertising in Cape Town. The award, which aims to celebrate the achievements of future creatives as they redefine creativity in the mobile era, was created in partnership with Facebook and The Nelson Mandela Foundation.

With students from across Africa and The Middle East briefed to address gender inequality awareness through the development of a mobile video campaign, the inaugural Facebook Challenge Loerie was won by Peni Buckton, Claudia Bester (both 3rd year students studying BA in Creative Brand Communication) and Lunje Jwambe (2nd year student studying Copy Writing diploma).

The winning trio created an engaging piece of work called ‘Everyday Armour’ which is an ‘anti-harassment couture’ brand that seeks to make thought-provoking social commentary on the gender-based violence women face daily. These students felt that as women, they could all relate to the small things that women have to do consciously and sub-consciously to prepare themselves for any instance; be it taking a different route home, wearing oversized clothing to deter unwelcome advances or even go as far as taking martial arts/self-defense classes, simply because they are born female. The campaign aims to shed light on this unfortunate reality and make a small difference in society.

“The quality of work we saw coming from students was truly inspirational,” says Nunu Ntshingila, Regional Director Facebook, Africa. “There was a lot of conceptual innovation, as well as fascinating approaches to the use of technology. Many congratulations from us at Facebook to the winners for not only embracing the challenge, but creating a thought-provoking and moving mobile video campaign. We look forward to our ongoing work with advertising schools and universities as we continue to support and invest in young and diverse creative talent.”

The three students received a bronze Loerie for their work, titled ‘Every Day Armour’. Commenting on their win, student Lunje Jwambe said: “It’s been a real honour to win a Loerie. We really enjoyed the opportunity to think about mobile in a different and challenging way and coupled with social consciousness, this truly made it a fascinating experience. It’s been very good grounding for each of us and one that I’m sure will stand us in good stead for our future careers.”

Charles Maggs, Head of Creative Faculty AAA, Cape Town, added: “The project exposes students to the demands of the digital communication front line. They learn a huge amount as they work, and the thematic tie-in to social issues makes the process relevant to everyone on a personal level.”

The winning campaigns will be launched on Facebook and Instagram soon.
