Heart FM will once again take the microphone to the heart of Western Cape communities for the 16DaysForYouth initiative from 1 June 2017. The radio station will undertake youth focussed projects across the length and breadth of the province by broadcasting in its mobile studio for the first 16 days of June 2017.  The initiative identifies projects in communities whereby the teams are able to bring people together to effect change. Last year the journey encountered Magda Meyer in Paarl from Magda’s Soup Kitchen – The soup kitchen fed 2500 mouths per month and through HeartFM and it’s partners Magda is now able to feed more than 20 000 per month. This is effecting change in our communities

This year the journey kicks off in Hawston and will travel on to Grabouw, Kenilworth, Heideveld, Robertson, Worcester, Tulbagh, Malmesbury, Constantia, Mitchell’s Plain, Saldanha, Paternoster, Langebaan, Atlantis & Klipheuwel. The focus for the 16 Days for Youth this year will be more than just fixing, painting and lending a helping hand in the various towns. Many of the locations identified this year have been investigated and a more global stance will be taken. The aim is therefore to add emphasis on the challenges and sociology of each town while physically making a difference through our hands-on projects.

 

Heart FM MD Renee Redelinghuys says: “This is a very special project for everyone at Heart FM. We get to go into our communities, meet them, listen to them and most importantly give them the opportunity to tell their stories.  As the biggest commercial radio station in the Western Cape it is our duty to give the youth in these communities a voice. The journey allows us to highlight the challenges, big and small, that our communities face on a daily basis and how you and I can help.  Our listeners have big hearts and we know they will once again show how much they care. We can’t wait to hit the road.”

 

Heart FM program manager Denver Apollus says: “We will put our best forward once again and make a difference through sharing resources and providing a team effort. We will sacrifice 16days of our time to understand and live the lives of those less fortunate. While we are using the station as a platform to raise awareness, the campaign is about telling the stories of others and how they engage in projects that make a difference. Heart FM may have started this initiative but we’d like for our listeners and the rest of the country to adopt it and carry it on. Let’s enable #16DaysForYouth and end it by celebrating Youth Day on the 16th June.”

Hugh Masekela cancels show due to surgery

‘HUGH MASEKELA: NO BORDERS ALBUM LAUNCH’ presented by KAYA FM AND BASSLINE LIVE cancelled

Bra Hugh’s management confirmed today that due to his upcoming surgery, and subsequent recovery period, his performances will be cancelled for the foreseeable future. This includes the Sunday, June 11th, Kaya FM & Bassline Live Present show at the Lyric Theatre. This performance was rescheduled as a Sunday matinee replacement for the previously postponed Friday, April 14th show at The Lyric.

 

What follows is the issued statement:

“Hugh fell and dislocated his right shoulder on the 7th April whilst in Morocco, and the fall exacerbated an old injury that Hugh sustained in 1993.  This caused the initial rescheduling of the NO BORDERS album launch.

In the subsequent recovery period the shoulder has not healed properly and this has necessitated a minor operation on Monday June 5th to repair tendon and ligament damage.

After the operation the doctor has insisted that Hugh take an 8-week hiatus from ALL activity, to allow the shoulder to fully recover.  This means no rehearsals or performances, no long-distance travel, no carrying or lifting of any kind and regular, weekly, physiotherapy.

In view of these conditions Hugh will only be able to return to the stage after Tuesday, August 1, 2017. High is disappointed to let his fans down, but his health is a top priority.”

 

We fully support Bra Hugh in his decision to put his health first and wish him a speedy recovery. We look forward to hosting him on our stage soon.

OFM, the sound of your life in Central South Africa, has secured the services of two top celebs to present one of its most popular special projects – Celeb Radio. Sassy Toks en Tjops presenter Janina Oberholzer and sultry songstress Nianell and will warm the airwaves in Central South Africa from 5-9 June, and 12-5 June respectively.

 

Celeb Radio gives well-known and well-loved South African celebrities the opportunity to host their own unique radio show for a whole week. Celebrities are assisted and supported by OFM presenters.

 

Says OFM General Manager, Nick Efstathiou: “Celeb Radio is one of our most successful projects and we look forward to hosting some of South Africa’s most popular presenters in studio every year. This year, we are thrilled to welcome Janina and Nianell to Central South Africa. Every year, Celeb Radio produces unique and exciting content. I am sure this year will be no different. Janina Oberholzer, who will be on air from 5-9 June, is no stranger to radio. Her career started in 2006 at campus radio station Tuks FM, after which she moved to Jacaranda FM in 2008, first as traffic compiler for the Just Plain Breakfast and later as sports presenter on the Martin Bester Drive team. In Central South Africa, she is probably best known as co-presenter on Toks and Tjops with rugby heavyweights Toks van der Linde and Breyten Paulse.

 

Nianell, who will host Celeb Radio from 12-15 June, is a platinum-selling musician and great friend of OFM. Her songs are not only played on South Africa radio stations, but also internationally. She quickly became a household name after the success of her debut album ‘Who painted the moon?’ She is also a SAMA winner and certainly one of the busiest singer-songwriters in South Africa.

Stoan Seate joins Power FM

Popular South African musician and television presenter, Stoan Seate joins POWER 98.7 as presenter of music show, POWER Fix which airs every Sunday from midday to 3pm. Having worked for Motsweding FM, Seate is no stranger to radio. However he is undoubtedly best known for his time with popular music group Bongo Muffin, which he formed in 1996 with his friends. Following the group’s success and release of five albums, Seate next established himself as an actor and television presenter currently presenting the SAFTA winning live music show, Afro Café.

“I’m looking forward to joining the POWER movement and connecting with South Africans through music and the issues that affect us in our daily lives. I resonate with what the brand stands for and looking forward to getting behind the microphone once again” says Seate.

SABC to partner with SAMA 23

The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) is proud to be a media partner of the 23rd edition of the South African Music Awards (SAMA), which will take place on Saturday, 27 May 2017 at Sun City in the North West Province. This partnership has been has been in existence for 22 years. The event will be broadcast on SABC1 at 20:00.  Live Amp, SABC1’s premiere music show which broadcast each Friday night, will also be doing a live broadcast on Friday, 26 May 2017 on SABC1 at 19:30,

 

The SAMA’s celebrate and honour artists who have made an impact in different music genres, ranging from Pop and Hip Hop to Gospel and Afrikaans music. As South Africa’s only public service broadcaster, with 5 TV channels and 19 radio stations, the SABC has always provided a platform for South African music to thrive. It continues to expose audiences to new music and age-old classics comparable to the best music in the world.

 

The hosts for the SAMA’s 23 are Metro FM’s morning breakfast co-host, Somizi Mhlongo and well known comedian and host of SABC2’s “Red Cake”, Tumi Morake. Mhlongo is a much-loved theatre and television veteran as well as a singer. He returns to the hosting duties that he so ably delivered on last year, when he co-hosted with actress, radio and television host, Thando Thabethe. Morake is the reigning queen of South African comedy. She is a respected television host and a pioneer in her field.

 

The South African Music Awards (SAMAs) are the Recording Industry of South Africa‘s music industry awards, established in 1995. The winners receive a gold-plated statuette called a SAMA. The ceremony features live performances as once-off collaborations by a selection of nominees. The SAMAs are considered the South African equivalent of the American Grammy Awards: “Our team is hard at work putting together a ceremony befitting the stature of the SAMA awards. How to submit music for Ukhozi FM airplay

All submission material is to be forwarded via HARDCOPY to the stations library department ( Sabc-100 K.E. MASINGA ROAD, please attention your sample to: Library ). you can use one of the following options to submit
– Drop your track off at: Ukhozi FM, SABC Durban,100 KE Masinga Road, Durban, 4001
– Or Post your track to: Ukhozi FM-Music For Airplay, P.O. Box 1588, Durban, 4000.

 

Once you’ve submitted, please allow a period of 7-14 days. This is to log an artist onto the library system and have a shelf number. Music is then forwarded to the music committee, where a decision will be made as to whether or not the submitted will be added to the Ukhozi FM playlist.

 

 

Due to the high volume of music submissions and Ukhozi FM’s selection process, we cannot contact all the artists with feedback. If you have not heard from Ukhozi FM after six weeks, please consider your submission unsuccessful.

Africa Day marks the day when the Organisation of Africa Unity was formed and 30 of 32 African leaders signed a founding charter in Addis Ababa on 25 May 1963. The Africa Day celebration acknowledges the progress that we as Africans have made.  On this day there is an opportunity for South Africans to reconnect and recommit themselves to develop a better Africa and a better world.

As part of Radio 2000’s monthly mandate themes, we will again celebrate this Africa Day (25th May) in a unique and memorable way by hosting several African Embassies and High Commissioners at the SABC Head office in Auckland Park, Johannesburg between 09h00- 15h00.  Dignitaries from 10 African countries are expected to fill the Radio Park foyer, for a day of cultural celebrations that will include showcasing their culture through exhibiting their food, music, fashion and culture at large.  By honouring this important day the station aims to educate and inform listeners about the history of African culture and civilisation and share all the great African cultural practices that shape the continent. The station hopes to encourage social cohesion amongst all Africans on the day.

When viewers have the power to watch what they want, TV schedules don’t look like they used to

Netflix may have broken the mold by releasing all episodes of House of Cards at once in 2013, but it’s viewers who are changing the nature of TV. And it’s more than just binging. From the characters we choose to wake up with to what we watch in bed, when viewers have the power to program their own day, TV watching no longer looks the same.

“For years our lives had to fit around television, now it’s the other way around,” said Cindy Holland, Vice President of Original Content. “We’ve given consumers control and it’s interesting to see the behaviors that emerge when viewers aren’t tied to a schedule. And even more so to see that these routines are replicated by millions the world over.”

 

Comedy for breakfast – viewers feel at home starting their day with Fuller House. The Tanners may have originally premiered at 8PM, but today, the Fullers are devoured before 8AM. While you might not expect popular parodies to stir laughs bright and early, around 6AM members are 34% more likely to watch comedy compared to the rest of the day, with the new comedy wake-up block including the likes of Michael Scott (The Office), Kimmy Schmidt (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt) and Chandler Bing (Friends), to name a few.

 

High noon, high drama – members pay a visit to the ladies of Litchfield at lunch. When viewing schedules are set by people and not programmers, lunchtime becomes no binging exception. Across the world, drama accounts for nearly half (47%) of viewing between noon and 2PM (an increase of 5% compared to the rest of the day). Midday streaming is especially prevalent in Brazil where members are 25% more likely to watch at this time compared to the rest of the world – who says shows like Shameless, Grey’s Anatomy and Orange is the New Black are strictly evening fare?

 

Opposite genres attract when we binge in bed – members trade the Demogorgon for Dave Chappelle. It’s no surprise thrillers like The Walking Dead, Stranger Things and Breaking Bad are being enjoyed in the evening – globally the genre sees a 27% increase come 9PM. But viewers are kicking Rick Grimes, the Upside Down and Walter White out of bed by 11PM and restoring balance with partners like Leslie Knope (Parks and Recreation), Dev Shah (Master of None) and Bojack Horseman before they hit the hay – apparently members around the world choose to start and end their day with a laugh.

 

Late nights are for learning – watchers prefer Chef’s Table as a midnight snack: Globally, 15% of streaming happens between midnight and 6AM and even rises as high as 21% in Japan and South Korea. And what these night owl members are watching is not what you think – documentaries see a 24% increase in viewing during this time, including titles like Abstract, Making a Murderer and Planet Earth. The pursuit for quality entertainment (and knowledge) doesn’t dim when the lights go out.

 

Ultimately, Netflix-time is anytime. When viewers fit TV watching around their daily lives, rather than the other way around, we see peak streaming as early as 5PM in India to as late as 10PM in Argentina and Singapore.

 

When it comes to defining the new ‘rules’ of TV watching, Frank Underwood said it best: “If you don’t like how the table is set, turn over the table.”

Six months of Netflix streaming data – accounting to roughly 77 million accounts per month – was used for this analysis to draw time of day insights on the following countries: Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Germany, Spain, France, United Kingdom, India, Italy, Japan, South Korea, Mexico, Malaysia, Netherlands, New Zealand, Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Singapore, and United States. Peak viewing hours were identified based on weekday viewing as well as the hours certain genres peaked in relation to the genre’s overall share of daily viewing. Where relevant, data was adjusted to account for timezones. Titles included in the release are listed as examples and do not relate to viewership or popularity.

MTN Bushfire reported in April that the rate of ticket sales had increased and fans were purchasing their festival tickets faster in comparison to 2016 with Golden Lounge tickets selling out weeks before the event. MTN Bushfire tickets have sold out for 4 consecutive years.

 

If you haven’t bought your tickets and are still looking to bring your fire, we are happy to announce that Sunday main arena tickets will be available at the festival entrance gate on Sunday morning. Sunday main arena tickets will cost E380.

 

Only people with valid tickets purchased in advance will be able to access the festival over the duration of the weekend. No tickets will be sold at the festival gate, except for Sunday main arena tickets. The MTN Bushfire ticket office will be closed on Friday and Saturday, so festival goers cannot buy tickets at the gate on these days. It is also important to note that tickets are not for resale. Anyone found selling tickets outside the festival entrance, parking lot or any festival property may be prosecuted.

 

MTN Bushfire kicks off this Friday, 26 May and goes on until Sunday, 28 May. Over 26 000 festival goers are expected to descend onto the scenic farmlands of the Malkerns Valley to enjoy the eclectic three-day music and arts programme. Darren Simpson joins KFM

KFM has surprised followers with a major line up remix, including the big news that Darren Simpson will be joining the Cape station from 3 July.

Darren is one of South Africa’s most prominent commercial broadcasters, having hosted 947’s Breakfast Xpress for 7 years, and featuring on the breakfast show for 7 years before that.

 

Despite his young age, Darren has already been in the industry for 24 years as he started working at Capital Radio when he was only 16, and went on to broadcast in the United Kingdom for three years and Australia for a year. He’s won numerous awards including multiple nods for ‘Best local radio personality’ in the Best of Joburg Awards.

 

Darren achieved national fame through his notorious “Whackhead” pranks, which hit record sales year after year and have totalled over half a million units sold. The prank also featured on KFM breakfast so there is an existing connection between Darren and the Western Cape audience. The success of his pranks, plus his TV work and stand-up comedy have made him a household name in South African entertainment.

 

In April 2017 he moved to the afternoon drive slot on 947 for lifestyle reasons, and in another lifestyle motivated move, he will be fulfilling a long-term goal of relocating his young family to the fair Cape.

 

From July, Darren will take over the KFM breakfast show between 6am and 9am, bringing his brand of fun, funny, relatable radio to listeners across the Cape – and yes, there will be a daily prank!

Joburgers will still get their fix as the two stations are both in the Primedia Broadcasting stable, and Darren will remain on Xpress Drive on 947, which he will broadcast from the Cape Town studios, from 4pm to 7pm.

The move will see current breakfast host, Ryan O’Connor moving into the weekday work slot, from 10am to 1pm.

The weekday work slot has been a major focus area for KFM as it offers the station a chance to connect with audiences in the busy part of their day whether they are in their cars, offices, homes, or wherever they are going about their business.

 

Ryan is at the top of his game, having recently won the Best Breakfast Presenter title at the 2017 Liberty Radio Awards, becoming the only presenter to win this award twice. A born and bred Capetonian, he’s got an innate understanding of what makes this region tick.

 

Ryan has a fantastic connection with listeners. We believe that he’s going to turn this show into ‘can’t-miss-it’ radio and are thrilled to have such a dynamic broadcaster steering us through this new chapter as we shake up daytime radio.

Ryan will be followed by Sechaba G on early afternoons, 1pm to 4pm, a time channel which suits her easygoing style.

 

The afternoon drive will be taken over by pint-sized dynamite: Carl Wastie, whose energy will drive listeners through their homeward commute. Carl joined KFM in mid-2016 and his infectious enthusiasm quickly made him a hit with listeners. Wastie will also host a regional chart show on Saturdays.

 

The station says goodbye to Rob Vember, who has hosted the afternoon drive since 2014 as well as the Coca-Cola Top40SA.

We thank Rob for his contribution to the station, and wish him the very best for the next part of his journey.
