The South African Breweries (SAB) Sports Media Awards 2017 has opened for entries.

 

Entrants have until Friday 6 October 2017, to consolidate eligible material and submit via the online portal that opened today.

 

Currently in its 37th year, the SAB Sports Media Awards acknowledges and recognises the work of dedicated members of the South African media who excel in reporting sport across print, digital, video and audio mediums as well as photography.

 

“For close on four decades we have had the privilege of recognising and rewarding those members of the media who excel in the reporting of sport in South Africa and to encourage quality standards and awareness of important sporting issues facing the country,” saysRobyn Chalmers, Director Communications: AB InBev Africa and SAB.

 

The categories for the SAB Sports Media Awards 2017 are:

 

  • Audio Media Award(Radio)
  • Digital Media Award
  • Photography Award(Print and online)
  • Video Media Award(Television)
  • Written Media Award(Print)
  • The Newcomer of The Year (sports journalists with less than two years’ experience in the industry)
  • Sports Media Hall of Fame
  • Sports Journalists’ Journalist of the Year

All main category winners receive a cash prize of R15,000 with the winner of the Photography sub-category “Action Shot of the Year” receiving R5,000.

 

The awards will also acknowledge a deserving candidate into the SAB Sports Hall of Fame and Sports Journalists’ Journalist of the Year.

 

Entries open today and close on Friday, 6 October 2017 at 17h00.

 

Entrants are to submit work published between 1st October 2016 and 30th September 2017.

Showmax and VAST Networks offer free Wi-Fi deal

Showmax and VAST Networks agreement to give Showmax customers unlimited Wi-Fi access to stream and download shows and movies at 83 VAST Wi-Fi hotspots across South Africa, for a three-month period.

 

Internet TV service, Showmax, and Africa’s first open access Wi-Fi provider, VAST Networks (VAST), have partnered to zero-rate Wi-Fi data for streaming and downloading TV shows and movies on Showmax.

 

 

 

 

Showmax and VAST are currently running a three-month trial at 83 VAST Wi-Fi hotspots across South Africa, which are mainly located at shopping malls and hospitals.

 

Chris Savides, head of Showmax Africa, said:

“Thanks to the downloads feature on Showmax, this zero-rated data means much more than just having something to watch while you’re at the mall. Once you log onto one of the VAST Wi-Fi sites, download up to 25 TV shows or movies and the data won’t cost you a cent. Get your groceries at the shops and come home with the week’s entertainment sorted.”

 

Showmax apps for both Android and iOS smartphones and tablets support the downloads feature. Up to 25 TV shows or movies can be downloaded at once and will remain on the device for 30 days. Once started, viewers have 48 hours to finish viewing a particular piece of content.

 

 

Users have the option of four different file sizes, which is useful when memory storage space is limited. At the lowest quality setting, one 20-minute episode of The Big Bang Theory will take up around 80 MB of space.

Trending Comics is coming to Town

Trending Comics is coming to South Africa and while we are not talking Batman, Wonder Woman or The Avengers, we are talking some of the hottest young comedians performing in the country today!

 

In its debut South African showing, Trending Comics will feature a stellar line up of our very own comic superheroes in Schalk Bezuidenhout, Robby Collins, Loyiso Madinga and Neil Green embarking on a nationwide tour that will touch down in Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg at the end of October and beginning of November. As if that wasn’t enough firepower comedy in one ensemble, there will be different heavyweight comedians to host the shows in each city and we are excited to confirm them as the following; Kurt Schoonraad (Cape Town), Carvin Goldstone (Durban), and Donovan Goliath (Johannesburg).

Ever since the notion of ‘trending’ emerged on social media, it has become a global obsession – everyone wants to ‘trend’, everyone wants to see what’s ‘trending’! So that’s right, get ready to hit those comedy hashtags when Trending Comics comes to town!

 

Trending Comics is a spin-off of the Johannesburg International Comedy Festival. Creating a number of programmes to help grow and recognise young, diverse creative talent across Africa and the Middle East, to showcase Facebook and Instagram’s mobile canvas for brands

Facebook (www.Facebook.com) is once again throwing its full support behind young, digital talent in South Africa, with a busy programme of events for Loeries 2017 Creative Week. The world’s largest social media community is sponsoring the Student Category of The Loeries Awards for the second year running, as well as hosting workshops and hackathons to help upskill young South African creatives in the latest practices for digital marketing and advertising.

Instagram “Durban’s Passions” hack, 17 August: Working with top students from advertising schools around the country for a day of fun and learning at the Facebook Creative Hub, the hack will be themed around Instagram and Stories. Exploring quick, creative and easy ways to use video and mobile to connect with passions on Instagram, students will be challenged to create stories about Durban, which will then be judged by a panel including Facebook’s Creative Shop and Durban Tourism.

 

Seminar of Creativity with Facebook Live, 18 August: Facebook’s head of Creative Shop for Middle East and Africa (MEA), Weera Saad will be speaking at the Seminar of Creativity. Exploring mobile as the new creative canvas and how Africa can be driving innovation through its use, the Seminar will also be shown on Facebook Live to encourage conversation around mobile and creativity.

 

Student Category Award, 19 August: New this year, is Facebook’s very own award –‘The Facebook Challenge’ in the student category of the Loeries Awards. This recognises and celebrates the achievements of the next generation of creative professionals who are redefining creativity on mobile. Awarded to a student campaign that creatively addresses gender equality using mobile video, the winning entry will be announced on Saturday evening.

Udo and Mpho take over Metro FM Sports

The SABC Sport division recently announced the launch of The Ultimate Sport Show (TUSS) on Metro FM.  The show will be hosted by the two renowned Sport presenters, Mr. Udo Carelse, and Ms Mpho Maboi. The Ultimate Sport Show will start on-air on Monday 21st August 2017 from 18h00-19h30 weekdays on Metro FM.

 

Udo will take our listeners through a wide variety of topics and discussion points, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday. On Thursdays, Mpho takes over the reins, as she takes listeners on a journey into the world of women in sport. Mpho will delve into the business and the influence that women have in sport. This dynamic team will bring new ideas and fresh perspective to sporting discussions.

 

 

 

Mr. Udo Carelse, is a seasoned broadcaster who has vast experience in sport journalism which includes amongst others, the 2015 IRB Rugby World Cup, 2016 Rio Olympics and T20 Cricket World Cup, and all major athletics marathons. He was also nominated and a finalist for the 2014 SA Sport Journalist of the Year.

 

 

Ms Mpho Maboi’s career spans over a decade in the entertainment industry. Mpho is currently a studio and touchline sport presenter for SABC Sport.  In April 2015, she joined Metro FM and she is currently part of the South Africa’s biggest breakfast show Fresh Breakfast with DJ Fresh weekdays broadcasting from 05h00-08h00.

RSG celebrates 80 years of Afrikaans radio

The world looks completely different than in 1937.  Then, communication was limited, and the introduction of radio – in Afrikaans – changed the world.  Now there’s a vast choice of media, but radio is still prevalent to entertain, educate and inform people – across borders and countries.

 

The past 80 years of Afrikaans radio delivered many highlights, and as part of the celebrations of 80 years of Afrikaans radio broadcasting, some jewels from the archives will be broadcasted, with nostalgic moments, where presenters will talk about the old days of radio and celebrating this milestone with a dance!

 

RSG already started the festivities with a rebroadcast of 13 weekly episodes of the Afrikaans James Bond of the 1960’s, called Staal Burger.  This super-secret spy had a way with the ladies, fast cars and putting the bad guys in their place!  Listeners will thoroughly enjoy this series every Thursday evening at 20:30.

 

During September and October, a series of commissioned documentary programs will be broadcasted.  The focus will be on the highlights of sport on Afrikaans radio, the development of drama over the years, as well as literature and music movements the past 80 years.  RSG will also play extracts from a few programs that were popular on Afrikaans radio over the years.

 

The actual 80th birthday will culminate in a special day of broadcasting on 27 October.

After receiving over 200 entries from across the continent, Discovery Channel is proud to announce the Top 10 finalists for the Discovery Channel ‘Don’t Stop Wondering’ Award.

 

Throughout August each film will be broadcast on Discovery Channel and it will be up to viewers to decide which film should be chosen as the overall winner.

 

You can vote on the Discovery website www.discoverychannelafrica.com and closes at 10am on Monday, 28 August. The winning filmmaker will be flown to Johannesburg to receive their prize at the Jozi Film Festival awards ceremony on 24 September 2017.

 

Each filmmaker stands the chance of winning a cash prize of $5 000 from Discovery Channel to go towards their next filming project.

Not only is it validating for my work to be recognised in this manner, but it is also really cool for my voice to be heard on such a platform.”

Puppetsula follows Jabu, a puppeteer who travels to instill joy in all those that witness his fiery performances of traditional dances. Michael and Shaun said, “Coming from hardship and still having a passion to give joy to others is truly remarkable. We applaud Jabulani Simango and can’t wait to share his amazing talent with our country. Thank you to Discovery for providing a platform for his story to be seen.”

 

Sithaidi: The Traditional Xhosa Bead Artist, by Caley Kolk from South Africa, see it on Wednesday 16 August at 20:00

 

This film follows Sithaidi’s journey to work every day: a scenic 6-hour trek in rural Transkei. The story showcases how creativity overcomes human adversity, old age and a lifelong polio condition, and how creativity ultimately inspires us to live. Caley said, “As a first time filmmaker, I am simply delighted our film has progressed to the Top 10. I am thrilled that Thaidi’s story is finally being seen by the world – she is a woman of great strength and her simple philosophy, cocky nature and tenacity is a continual source of inspiration to me. In her own words, she is number 1. I hope to report back to her that her film is number 1 too!”

 

The Ascension by Dieter Du Plessis from South Africa, airing on Wednesday 23 August at 20:00

 

This short documentary follows the journal of a trail runner, with a voice-over that relates life to mountain climbing. Dieter said, “It feels like a door being opened after years of knocking!”

 

The Tragedy of Africa, by Dusty Van Niekerk from South Africa, airing on Friday 25 August at 20:00

 

The Tragedy of Africa looks at Africa’s beauty inside and out, following the sad reality behind the harsh rhino poaching crisis which South Africa faces. Dusty said, “I am so grateful and excited to be a part of this amazing opportunity to share my film with everyone”.

 

Mr Ability, by Okuyo Joel Atiku Prynce from Uganda, airing on Monday 21 August at 20:00

 

This is a story of Simon Peter Lubega, a physically impaired, creative artist who wakes up early every morning and works against all odds on his art pieces to raise money to support himself and his family. Okuyo said, “I am highly honoured to be set apart for this prestigious moment, amongst creative minds, by a world class channel. My first work as a director to be selected and aired on Discovery channel is indescribable.”

 

Egg Slap, by Pressilla Nanyange from Uganda, airing on Tuesday 22 August at 20:00

 

Egg Slap explores a childhood game, football, but with a twist. Pressilla said, “I am beyond excited to be selected among the top ten; I’m feeling blessed.”

 

Sjangalala: The New Era, by Siphiwe Phiri from South Africa, see it on Friday 18 August at 20:00

 

This is a documentary about a pastor who is breaking the stereotype surrounding the art of spinning cars. Siphiwe said, “I have been in the TV industry for over 8 years now and this is by far the biggest acknowledgement I have ever received for my work. Non-People, by Wesley Rhode from South Africa, airing Thursday 24 August at 20:00

 

This documentary celebrates the trials and tribulations of South Africa’s informal recyclers – people that are over looked and ignored. This film tells the story of how life must be for someone whose skin has no protection from the sun, living in a country that averages over 80% sunshine during any given year. Welcome to Paulus’s life in Namibia. Tim said, “To have Another Sunny Day selected as one of the Top 10 finalists is one of those magical moments that rarely happen. I’m humbled by the opportunity and look forward to viewing the other nine magical works from across our continent.”

Netflix Acquires Millarworld

Comics Legend Mark Millar Joins Forces With the Leading Global Internet Entertainment Platform to Blow Minds Everywhere.

 

Netflix Inc. announced  it acquired Millarworld, the comic book publishing powerhouse founded by Mark Millar, the legendary creator of such iconic characters and stories as Kick-Ass, Kingsman, and Old Man Logan, and one of the most important voices in comics.

 

Together, Netflix and Millar will bring Millarworld’s portfolio of critically and fan-acclaimed character franchises to life through films, series and kids’ shows available exclusively to Netflix members globally. Millarworld will also continue to create and publish new stories and character franchises under the Netflix label.

 

The acquisition, the first ever by Netflix, is a natural progression in the company’s effort to work directly with prolific and skilled creators and to acquire intellectual property and ownership of stories featuring compelling characters and timeless, interwoven fictional worlds. Terms of the transaction weren’t disclosed.

 

“As creator and re-inventor of some of the most memorable stories and characters in recent history, ranging from Marvel’s The Avengers to Millarworld’s Kick-Ass, Kingsman, Wanted and Reborn franchises, Mark is as close as you can get to a modern day Stan Lee,” said Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos. “We can’t wait to harness the creative power of Millarworld to Netflix and start a new era in global storytelling.”

 

“This is only the third time in history a major comic book company has been purchased at this level,” said Millar. “I’m so in love with what Netflix is doing and excited by their plans. Netflix is the future and Millarworld couldn’t have a better home.”

 

Millar, who runs Millarworld with his wife Lucy Millar, is one of the most consistent hitmakers in the graphic novel and comics world. In his eight years at Marvel, he developed the comic books and story arcs that inspired the first Avengers movie, Captain America: Civil War, and Logan (Wolverine), which collectively grossed over $3 billion in worldwide box office. Since Millarworld was started, the company and its co-creators have given birth to eighteen published character worlds, of which three, Wanted, Kick-Ass and Kingsman, have yielded theatrical films that together have grossed nearly $1 billion in global box office.

 

“Mark has created a next-generation comics universe, full of indelible characters living in situations people around the world can identify easily with,” added Sarandos. “We look forward to creating new Netflix Originals from several existing franchises as well as new super-hero, anti-hero, fantasy, sci-fi and horror stories Mark and his team will continue to create and publish.”

Apple reports 3rd Quarter Results

Revenue Growth of 7 Percent and EPS Growth of 17 Percent

Services Revenue Hits All-Time Quarterly Record

 

Apple recently announced financial results for its fiscal 2017 third quarter ended July 1, 2017. The Company posted quarterly revenue of $45.4 billion and quarterly earnings per diluted share of $1.67. These results compare to revenue of $42.4 billion and earnings per diluted share of $1.42 in the year-ago quarter. International sales accounted for 61 percent of the quarter’s revenue.

 

“With revenue up 7 percent year-over-year, we’re happy to report our third consecutive quarter of accelerating growth and an all-time quarterly record for Services revenue,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. “We hosted an incredibly successful Worldwide Developers Conference in June, and we’re very excited about the advances in iOS, macOS, watchOS and tvOS coming this fall.”

 

“We reported unit and revenue growth in all our product categories in the June quarter, driving 17 percent growth in earnings per share,” said Luca Maestri, Apple’s CFO. “We also returned $11.7 billion to investors during the quarter, bringing cumulative capital returns under our program to almost $223 billion.”

 

Apple is providing the following guidance for its fiscal 2017 fourth quarter:

Revenue between $49 billion and $52 billion

Apple’s board of directors has declared a cash dividend of $0.63 per share of the Company’s common stock. The dividend is payable on August 17, 2017 to shareholders of record as of the close of business on August 14, 2017.
