Marlon Davids appointed MD of channels

Marlon Davids has been appointed as the Managing Director of by eMedia Investments. He has been Acting Managing Director since April 2016.

Having completed his studies in business administration, Davids joined’s customer care team in 2001 before rapidly progressing through positions in the channel’s scheduling, transfers and programming departments. He was the recipient of the Group’s inaugural eSpirit Award, an annual accolade that recognizes professional excellence, and was subsequently appointed as the Head of International Acquisitions.

He left the Group in April 2013 for a short while, before rejoining eMedia Investments in September 2014 as the General Manager of Content Strategy and Planning for

Davids is looking forward to tackling his new role and says “ and its people are part of my DNA. I am passionate about the television industry, with a special interest in both local and international content. I look forward to collaborating with the talented people within our business and the industry.”

Davids’ appointment is effective from 1 July 2016.

On the 23rd June 2016, Umhlobo Wenene FM paid a tribute to one of its fallen heroes the late Saba Mbixane .This tribute was a way of paying homage to a true son of the soil, to a leader in his community, to an achiever and to an activist of our traditions and customs. The station was inundated with listeners pouring their hearts out with fond memories of their fallen hero.

umhlobo[1]The station has also given its programming a facelift. Mr Phumzile Mnci and his management team have embarked on giving the station programming a well-deserved facelift. In the beginning of the current fiscal the station had a few vacancies due to the leaving of the station on-air personalities who decided to seek other business adventures, thus presenting the station with an opportunity to embark on a facelift exercise and/or a reshuffle among its workforce.




The station’s objective for this current fiscal is to grow its listenership to 5 million, and currently the station has 4, 6 million listeners. The midday show Sij’ikilanga is currently hosted by Amaza Ntshanga, with Nonala Tose being a co-presenter as well as being the producer of the show. Nonala will now bid farewell to Sij’ikilanga and assume a more behind the scenes position where she will produce the station’s mid-morning show called Khanya Gqiyazana.


This show is hosted by the dynamic and versatile Lulu Haarmans who has a wealth of radio experience, having started her broadcast vocation at uBuntu Radio, then moved to Radio Grahamstown and later joined Umhlobo Wenene FM. Nonala Tose is a passionate radio producer and practitioner who holds a degree in psychology and organisational psychology. In 2013 Nonala Tose was awarded the Bright Star Young Achiever Awards at the MTN Radio Awards .She is also the founder of Nonala Tose Productions which focuses on childhood development .This young ambitious lady was born and bred in Queenstown in the Eastern Cape. On Sundays Nonala will now host Umhlobo Wenene FM’s gospel show called Seza Umphefumlo, which is a gospel music driven show. This show currently has over a million listeners.


Sij’ikilanga will now be produced by Reggie Solani. Reggie is a Radio Practitioner, Events MC & Public Speaker with well over 15 years radio experience. He started at Radio Graaff Reinet as a Current Affairs Producer and Presenter. In 2002 while studying at NMMU he joined Bayfm. In 2005 he left Bayfm for Trufm where he spent 10 years of his career doing the Afternoon Drive, Breakfast show and Trufm Top 30.


He has been a Professional Public Speaker for 8 years. Speaks at Business Seminars, Graduations, Schools events, etc. He has a National Diploma in Audio Visual Production from MSC College and an Honours Degree in Public Administration from the University of Fort Hare. He is currently a Master’s Degree student in Development studies at NMMU.


Another change is that Nomonde Vakalisa a co-host of Imvuselelo which is a popular show on Umhlobo Wenene FM will now produce the Thursday midday show hosted by Mama kamaAsie who is a well-known sub-brand of Umhlobo Wenene FM. This is a religious show which enjoys a listenership of 1, 4 million listeners. Nomonde also hosts a religious driven music show every Tuesday night named Iqonga Levangeli. Nomonde is a distinguished and respected preacher. The changes above are effective from the 01st July 2016.


The Station Manager has urged the station’s listeners to continue supporting the station as they have always dedicatedly done so for the past 56 years. By effecting this facelift and reshuffle Umhlobo Wenene FM is re-committing itself to deliver on its mandate which is to educate, inform and entertain.

Metro FM has won and affirmed its position as the Coolest Radio Station at the Sunday Times Generation next Brand Awards for the 4th Year in a Row. The 11th Generation Next Awards were held at the Sandton Convention centre and attracted marketers and different brands.


METROFMLOGOThe Award was presented by the Sunday Times Generation Next youth awards which gathers the opinions and attitudes of young people between the ages of eight and 22 to determine which brands they think are the coolest. The survey is conducted by HDI Youth Marketeers.

M-Net and SuperSport have secured the rights to screen the much talked-about ITV documentary Oscar Pistorius: The Interview, featuring the former Paralympic athlete’s first television interview since the tragic events of Valentine’s Day in 2013.  M-Net viewers will be able to watch the interview as part of a Carte Blanche special minutes after its world-premiere on the UK television network on Friday, 24 June.


oscarThe Carte Blanche special, which will include an in-depth panel discussion, will start at 22:55 on Friday, 24 June on both M-Net and its sister channel M-Net City (channel 115), which is also on DStv Compact. Soon thereafter (exact details to be confirmed) the documentary as well as the Carte Blanche special will become available on all the DStv Catch Up platforms, while SuperSport will broadcast further screenings for those who didn’t stay up late for the express delivery to M-Net on Friday night.

In Oscar Pistorius: The Interview, Peabody award-winning investigative journalist Mark Williams-Thomas meets up with the Blade Runner at his uncle Arnold Pistorius’ home in Waterkloof, Pretoria, where he has been under house arrest, awaiting sentencing after South Africa’s Supreme Court of Appeal overturned the High Court’s original verdict of culpable homicide to murder.  Viewers will hear Oscar’s account of what happened on the night he shot and killed his then girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. He also shares details about their relationship and his previous use of firearms. Furthermore, Mark Williams-Thomas probes into key details of the prosecution case which resulted in the conviction.

Idols SA move to Mzansi Magic

Now that the four-city audition tour is done and dusted, Mzansi Magic is ready to unveil the country’s new crop of wanna-be popstars in the 12th season of Idols SA. As the countdown to the new season edges closer and closer, Idols enthusiasts are going to be thrilled when the revamped grand dame of Mzansi’s music talent shows is revealed.


For the first time in the show’s history, Mzansi Magic will become the exclusive home to Idols SA.


Mzansi Magic’s Nondumiso Mabece said the move was a perfect fit for Idols SA. “Idols is Mzansi’s longest running music talent spectacular and will fit right in with the rest of the country’s best reality shows including Date My Family, Our Perfect Wedding and Utatakho, amongst others. The celebrations kick off at Sun City on Saturday, June 25 with the ‘Ultimate Konka Concert’ featuring the hottest kwaito and hip-hop acts.

SABC radio station Motsweding FM is turning 54 years old and is set to celebrate this significant milestone with an unforgettable experience. All listeners are encouraged to attend the exclusive inaugural Annual Motsweding FM Birthday Weekend Extravaganza which will be held at the Sun Park at Sun City Resort in Rustenburg on June 25 and 26, 2016.

motswe2The massive weekend-long birthday celebration is the first of its kind for the station and will boast a star-studded line-up of South Africa’s hottest kwaito, hip-hop and house music DJs, and Afro soul acts. SA’s music heavyweights headlining the event include Mafikizolo, Fifi Cooper, Emtee, Robbie Malinga, TuksSenganga, and many others. Also scheduled are special guest appearances from Black Motion, DJs Sphe and Naves, and the station’s very own presenters and talent.

“Black Lives Matter” to premier at DIFF

Black Lives Matter is a powerful and damning indictment on the current state of affairs for tens-of-thousands of miners working and living in abysmal conditions across South Africa. The film will have its global premiere at the Durban International Film Festival on Sunday 19 June at 12:30 at Maharani followed up by abother screening on the 23rd of June at 22:00 at Nu Metro Pavilion.

blmTaking the Marikana Massacre as its starting point, the film digs into the history of the mining sector as well as the political backstory that led up to the tragedy, and powerfully demonstrates that even since this defining moment, nothing has changed for most miners across South Africa.

Director Joseph Oesi, a South African filmmaker and TV journalist, was moved to produce the film after witnessing the devastating events of August 16th 2012 play out on TV screens across South Africa and the world. Oesi knew that this event was the manifestation of a much larger story that was taking place, not just in South Africa, but across the continent. He explains his motivation for making the film,



“This film being produced is a very important one at this juncture of my country’s change of course. South Africa has certainly set a course, fuelled by a betrayal to the original course set by the original struggle heroes and to the Freedom Charter. Mining, at the heart of the country’s economy, has underpinned the course in the interest of big business. In essence the struggles, sufferings from Colonialism and Apartheid still persist in modern day South Africa to the disappointment of the vast majority.”

Film Synopsis:

In South Africa, 22 years ago, the African National Congress came to power. This, many believed, would signify an end to racism and oppression, and our people would prosper. But today inequality and economic disempowerment are still rife. The corruption and power grabbing at all levels of society impacts not only on the moral fabric of our society but, more importantly, on the working class poor.



The massacre of 34 striking mineworkers at a mine called Marikana brought these issues into sharp focus. Now, in an area called Mokopane in South Africa’s Limpopo province, tensions between the community and the mining companies, and communities and their traditional leaders, seem set to explode, with equally dire consequences. Black Lives Matter explores how the mineral wealth, rightfully belonging to the people of South Africa, has been sold to capitalist interests for the enrichment of a few elite and at the expense of the country – and how traditional communities have been divided in this process.



This film takes us on a journey through three rural communities – the Mogales, the Kekanas, and the Mapelas. What they have in common is that the richest platinum bearing reef in the world runs underneath their land – and that international mining companies have made dubious deals with traditional leaders whose very legitimacy is questioned by the communities they supposedly serve.!/trailer

Phalaphala FM, previously known as Radio Venda, turned 51 this year. To celebrate the springinto the next half-century the SABC radio station is reveling in change.It has been 18 years since the station rebranded and there is no better way to celebrate than to get a facelift.To mark this milestone the radio station will be launching their brand new logo and a multiplatform brand campaign at an exclusive gala dinner.


phalaPhalaphala FM,is a contemporary radio station targeting 16-to 34-year-old aspirational Tshivenda-speaking people,underpinned by their tagline: ‘Always There With You.This speaks to the stations long-lasting endurance. From its early days in 1965, where the station shared a three-hour broadcast a day with then Radio Tsonga, to a full 24-hour broadcast in 1978, the station has morphed to reflect the ever-changing landscape of the country and its listeners.


“The rebranding is not just about leaving the past, it is about reflecting on our own changes from analogue to digital,” says Station Manager Freddy Sadiki.

The celebration of 51 years also highlights Phalaphala FM’s integral role in community development by creating activities such as;Traditional Dance Competitions that have been running for over 12 years. These cater to Xitsonga, Sepedi and Tshivenda dance groups in Limpopo and Gauteng. The annual overseas tour, which has been going on for over twenty years, has visited countries such as; Greece, France, India, China, Argentina, Thailand, Brazil and Turkey. The tours have been the flagship of the station, ensuring that Phalaphala appeals to non-Tshivenda speaking audiences as well. This year listeners will be visiting Singapore and Thailand.

Over the past four months, ShowMax has added a range of new viewing options including an app for the latest generation Apple TV as well as AirPlay and Chromecast support for streaming video direct from mobile devices to big screen TVs. Continuing this trend, ShowMax is now available on the DStv Explora decoder.

Devices_750x375_2ShowMax, the internet TV service launched in August 2015, will now be available on connected DStv Explora decoders. This is the fourth new viewing option introduced over the past four months and extends access to subscription video services to an even wider audience. In particular, these new viewing options make it easy for people with a standard (non-smart) big screen TV to watch ShowMax.

Barron Ernst, Chief Product Officer of ShowMax said:

“In South Africa, interest in internet TV is entering a new phase. In addition to early adopters, we’re now seeing a more mainstream customer base wanting to try the service out. For Explora owners this is a risk-free proposition – binge entire box sets from the very beginning without having to buy any new equipment.”

ShowMax will be added to all active DStv Exploras in South Africa in a phased rollout starting 13 June 2016. A ShowMax subscription is needed to access the service. Existing ShowMax customers can log in using their email address and password. New customers will need to sign up for ShowMax at via laptop or desktop computer.

As an added convenience, customers paying for DStv via debit order will be able to pay for ShowMax directly through their DStv account.

“We’re already busy on the next phase which is developing apps for additional streaming media devices as well as gaming consoles. Our goal is to provide a great viewing experience no matter what you’re watching ShowMax on,” concludes Ernst.
