How Well Can You Spell?

Show off your superlative word skills by entering M-Net’s Spellbound!

You can’t sing – not even in the shower. Your carefully planned delectable dishes end up being despicable disasters. You simply don’t have the stamina to survive on a deserted island; and your budding entrepreneurial skills won’t turn you into the next big business mogul. But the day spelling talent was handed out, you were in front of the queue, just behind the Oxford dictionary. Finally, it’s your time to shine on M-Net!

27_spellbound-enter-hereThis October, pioneering television network M-Net is celebrating 30 years of timeless magic. It’s also the month during which M-Net’s premium channel, M-Net 101, will be touring the country to hold auditions for the next season of The Voice SA as well as the month the channel introduced the highly entertaining new local reality show Shark Tank South Africa. But there’s more up the M-Net 101 sleeve: The channel is producing a brand-new, family-friendly game show called Spellbound, based on the concept of a spelling bee, and is looking for word whizzes who could become the country’s English spelling and grammar champions.

Spellbound will test contestants’ word skills in a fun and interactive way and will include super spellers from different age groups. There will be a round for primary school learners between the ages of 10 and 13, a round for high school learners between the ages of 14 and 18, and one for adults of all ages, as long as they’re over 18 and are South African citizens or permanent residents. The learners must currently be attending school in South Africa and must have the permission of their parents or legal guardians to take part in the show.

Apart from the exhilarating thrill that comes from knowing that you’re the country’s number one letter-master in your age group, winners – and their schools – will walk away with cash prizes.

Entries for Spellbound have opened on M-Net’s official website and will close on Monday, 31 October at 23:59. To be invited to show off your superlative English spelling and grammar skills on the Spellbound set, the first step is to complete the questionnaire and online test here.

Interestingly, according to Internet quizzes, “questionnaire” often makes the list of most commonly misspelt (or is it misspelled?) words in the English language. And it’s embarrassing (correct spelling) how often spell-checkers have to correct words such as “appearance”, “queue”, “receive”, “mischievous” and “accommodate”. If you never get these examples wrong and find yourself annoyed when the greengrocer wants to sell you potatoes with an apostrophe, you’re indeed the ideal candidate for Spellbound!

Spellbound is a wonderful local addition to our M-Net 101 schedule,” says Jan du Plessis, Director: M-Net Channels. “Spelling bees have become all the rage across the world and while the contestants will be giving it a go on television, the entire family at home can test their own skills and brush up on their grammar. It’s education wrapped in great fun.”

Spellbound is produced for M-Net by Homebrew Films and will be screened on M-Net 101 on Sundays at 17:00 from 20 November 2016.

AAA Entertainment is excited to announce that one of its founding members and current Head of Sales, Mayenzeke Baza, has been named by Young Independents, Independent Media’s youth platform, as one of Mzansi’s 100.

ATFT_COLOUR_006_PRINT_Mzansi’s 100 recognizes inspiring young South Africans in five categories innovators, trailblazers, influencers, healers and disruptors. Baza has been honored in the innovation category specifically for his innovative and creative approaches to developing the SA film industry across the spectrum; from production to market.

Through his work at AAA Entertainment, Baza has spearheaded a number of innovative projects and initiatives within the film and television industry, especially regarding the distribution and financing of content.

This work includes iBiskop, an online film store that allows people to download videos using wi-fi at taxi ranks. It bypasses the difficulties many South Africans have accessing video on demand because there is unlimited bandwidth, the films are cheap, and they can be purchased using a cash voucher that can be bought from a vendor, so there is no need for credit cards.

Cinema exhibition has also been innovated by Baza with a new approach in the Faith Based genre. On the release of God is Not Dead 2 AAA Entertainment piloted a mobile DCP system that allowed churches to screen the film day and date with the release in traditional cinemas with no risk of piracy and contributing 5% of the weekend box office with one single screening. “The system can also be used to bring local black films to untapped audiences in areas where cinemas have not been built, yet the appetite for these films is evident”, says Baza

AAA Entertainment is a global company doing sales on films and TV content around the world and has offices in Johannesburg and Los Angeles, with an office in Lagos imminent in the next few months. The LA office is co-developing a television and film slate of 400 hours for the US and international market with their partners Hoplite Entertainment, with distribution and network deals signed on each series or film before being greenlit for production.

Pascal Schmitz head of acquisitions at AAA Entertainment is delighted with the recognition of his business partner and adds, “At AAA Entertainment, we are motivated to succeed based on our passionate belief in the talent and potential that exists in this country. We are always looking for new ways to develop that talent and bring it to market.”

As Head of Sales at AAA Entertainment, Baza has been responsible for shopping a host of South African films to international distributors. With recent deals concluded for films such as Hard to Get and Between Friends.

Baza explains the importance of innovation within this field, “You have to be ahead of the game and understand both international trends as well as the local environment. At AAA we don’t just acquire films for international sales, but rather we  work with filmmakers from the development phase to ensure that their films will be marketable locally and internationally.  Our international experience in sales, working with some of the biggest buyers and distributors globally, as well our personal experience as South African producers, give us a unique perspective on the industry.”

AAA Entertainment represents some of the continent’s most promising films, TV series and talented filmmakers, offering a unique, globally focused distribution and sales service to buyers across the globe.

Hot on the heels of the release of South African musical legend Johnny Clegg’s brand new album of 17 remixed tracks – JOHNNY CLEGG: 2016, Jaron Clegg has released a breathtaking video for the single “Take My Heart Away.”

Jaron Clegg, who studied at The Vancouver Film School and currently works in LA as a film-maker, had already created a script for a short movie he had developed, and  during the process of remixing “Take My Heart Away” Johnny was imagining  a theme that would reflect the overwhelming power of the human spirit and remembered Jaron’s script.

jcgAfter much convincing, Jaron shortened the script and transformed it into a magnificent piece of art, using special CGI effects that took months to create. The effects developed included creating the South African Space Centre that we see in the film, as well as simulating rocket fire and smoke for the launch scenes. “It was challenging to streamline the visual effects work while writing, producing and directing the production,” explains Jaron.

The concept of the video “Take My Heart Away” is about the passion and the yearning to have your dreams and your spirit take you to a better place. The story follows a young township boy who escapes his township “life-world” on a space shuttle, which literally and figuratively launches him into the next plane of existence.  As Jaron so succinctly puts it, “It’s a journey of transcendence.”

When asked about making the video Jaron had this to say;

“It was quite an emotional project for me– making a film for my dad. I treated it as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and pushed really hard to bring the script to life. I put a lot of pressure on myself to create something I could be proud of.”

The video was shot at Maropeng, Cradle of Humankind with the  amazing support of the staff and then moved on to Diepsloot Township for four days.  For Jaron this was a humbling, eye-opening experience for him and the crew as he explains, “The township community was so welcoming and supportive; we couldn’t have made this film without their blessings. We must also make mention of the extras that came from that community who got into the spirit of the project, and delivered beautiful and heart-warming moments in the film.”

Here’s the official link to the video

They were the first and last rap group to date to win the Grammy’s coveted Best New Artist award.

South Africa’s triple platinum selling trio, Mi Casa, will be one of the headlining acts on the main stage. The award winning group shot to fame in 2011 with “These Streets”, and has continued to reach new heights with every single and album released since. Their unique and relatable sound has ensured they keep the number one spot on South African radio charts; their latest single “Don’t Wanna Be Your Friend” being the number 1 most Shazam’ed song in South Africa for 6 consecutive weeks. Since the 80s they have continued to influence many other rap and hip hop artists.

Sunday sees Louie Vega and Elements of Life on the main stage again.  They are joined by SA music star Lira – the multi-platinum selling and 11-times SAMA-winning afro-soul vocalist who refers to her music as “a fusion of soul, funk, elements of jazz and African soul” – and Roy Ayers.  Ayers, known as the “The Godfather of Neo Soul”, is a pioneer of jazz-funk and is a key figure in acid jazz which is a mixture of jazz into hip-hop and funk. He is most well-known for his signature compositions “Everybody Loves the Sunshine” and “Searchin” and is famous for having more sampled hits by rappers than any other artist.

‘Come Closer’ to Cara Frew

The gifted and alluring Cara Frew, is set to release her first EP, Come Close to Me, featuring tracks Dive, Closer, Skin Deep and Weightless, and will be available for download on iTunes on the 22nd of April 2016.

20150421-CARA-FREW_DSC8831-LLCara worked on this four-track EP in Los Angeles with Daniel Heath. His writing and production credits include Blue Jeans and Young and Beautiful for Lana Del Rey, as well as music for Maleficent and 50 Shades of Grey soundtracks. All four tracks were co-written with Stefan Skarbek, who worked closely with the legendary Amy Winehouse until her passing.

The EP is one of Cara’s most personal as she incorporates her strong Lana Del Ray influence into deep grooves, electronic elements and her signature slow, atmospheric sound. It features darkly shaded synths that cascade into lush walls of sound and her clean vocals resonate a bruised beauty. The music video for Dive has been released and Weightless is set to follow in the next few weeks.

The dedicated singer, songwriter, and musician is currently taking the South African music industry by storm with her enthralling vocals and progressive style of music. Her recent release and debut single, Falling, a Tropical House track produced by David Scott of The Kiffness, spent 12 weeks on the 5FM Top 40, four of them which were in the Top 10 reaching the number four spot.

The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (‘the Authority’) hereby notifies all stakeholders, particularly communities with an interest in applying for community sound broadcasting service licences that the Authority has issued a notice of a moratorium in respect of such applications as well as applications for radio frequency spectrum licences for the purposes of providing a community sound broadcasting service.

In the government gazette published on 22 September 2015, the Authority stated that the imposition of the moratorium was necessitated by the following:

  1. Scarcity of analogue radio frequencies

  1. The current review of licensing processes and procedure regulations wherein the Authority intends to process registrations for community sound broadcasting services in two (2) intervals per year

  1. The Authority’s intention to develop a new regulatory framework for community broadcasting during the 2016/17 financial year

It should be noted that the moratorium does not apply to pending registrations currently before the Authority and applications already approved but not issued with community sound broadcasting licences.

The Authority will issue a formal notice and communicate its decision to lift the moratorium once all processes have been completed and it is ready for licensing.

SAfm has won the  BASA Media Sponsorship Award for the inaugural SAfm Playwriting Competition. The 18th BASA Awards were held at the Constitutional Court last night and the awards were handed out by the Minister of Arts and Culture, Nathi Mhtethwa and the Chairman of the BASA Board of Directors, Kwanele Gumbi.  The Minister congratulated SAfm for a job well done, while the Chairman of BASA said that he was pleased to note that SAfm wasn’t just “all talk” and that we were playing our part in furthering the Arts in South Africa.

Drama is part of the SAfm mandate and ICASA license conditions and is something we are obliged to do. However, it is something that Julia Ann Malone our Executive Producer for Drama,  does with passion and dedication because we believe that it is a form of radio that can make a difference to people’s lives and perceptions.  We are a nation of story-tellers and the SAfm Playwriting Competition is just another way that we are providing a platform for the telling of the stories that make up the rich tapestry of the country. The competition’s objectives include the unearthing of new writing talent and the encouragement of the use of radio as a means of expression.

The competition exceeded all expectations in receiving over 300 entries and apart from the 3 prize-winning plays, it yielded more than 30 other new plays ready for broadcast. They are currently on air.

SAfm are currently putting the finishing touches to the 2nd edition of the competition that will be launched soon.

Career Expo: Come explore and interact with TOP tertiary institutions, companies and prospective employers

The prospect of a career choice is an issue that touches every young learner, organization, community and our economy profoundly. As is, the majority of our learners spend more time deciding what cars, phone, and clothes to buy than choosing a career. Could this be that career decision making is hard work or that our learners have difficult time accessing information about tertiary studies and career options available? If our learners make informed choices they are less likely to experience some of the consequences of poor choices or ineffective career guidance such as tertiary institutions drop out, late tertiary applications, unemployable youth market, completing a degree that one has no interest in, indecisive labour force market or unhappy workforce.

In order to help facilitate our young learners’ transition to tertiary and to the working world, Careers For A Powerful You Pty Ltd (C4U) has, since the beginning of the year, embarked on a journey throughout townships and rural areas in South Africa and now going to Mahikeng in the North West province to create a platform where our young learners access resources, opportunities, and sound advice from professionals to unlock their full potential and make informed decisions about their career path.

For our young learners – the Career expo is a platform to meet and interact with a wide variety of organizations in one location, in one day. This interaction allows them to tap into opportunities available within these organizations. Also, it is a platform where learners are proactive and search for solutions with regard to careers and challenges they currently face. Our core focus is to encourage innovation and creativity and produce sustainable development within our economy and community. We have identified the following as challenges that lie ahead for our learners: admissions, financial aid, earning extra income, opportunity identification, unemployment, how to start up a business, sound advice and questions about their future.

For our exhibitors – the career expo is a vibrant and revitalized platform for the public and the private sectors to profile themselves as employers of choice. This is an opportunity to meet with learners from various schools in and around Mahikeng. It also presents an unmatched opportunity for talent finders to promote their organisations and compete for the best available pool of talent and connect directly with potential employees, bursary recipients, provide employment and career information.

C4U is a member of the Shanduka Black Umbrellas programme which is an initiative to support and mentor black entrepreneurs to build sustainable businesses.

As a mobile career consulting firm, we specialize in career development within township and rural areas. This is done through educational and career events, publications and CSI Projects. Our mission is to empower our ‘future leaders’ in rural and township areas and to ensure equal access of information and resources. We connect young learners with educators, marketers, companies and mentors to create quality career and learning exposure.
