Southern African business game-changers applauded

The epic achievements of Southern Africa’s most iconic business players were celebrated at the Johnnie Walker Blue Label CNBC Africa All Africa Business Leaders Awards, in a glittering ceremony that took place at Johannesburg’s Sandton Convention Centre on the 19th of September.

 

The third and final regional round of the Johnnie Walker Blue Label CNBC Africa All Africa Business Leaders Awards, the Southern African ceremony celebrated the visionary businesspeople whose dynamism shaped the region’s business landscape in 2013. CNBC Africa will broadcast the ceremony on the network on 30th September at 10pm CAT.

 

The Entrepreneur of the Year category commended the indomitable spirit of Francis Grogan, the CEO of Zambeef, one of the largest integrated agri-businesses in Zambia. The two finalists also competing for the title included Jay Ramnundlall, the CEO of PC Training and Business College, and the Chairman of Regenesys Business School, Dr. Marko Saravanja.

 

The Young Business Leader of the Year category applauded dynamic game-changer, Rob Stokes, the CEO of Quirk, one of the fastest growing companies in the social media and digital marketing field. The category’s other contender was Ceaser Siwale, the CEO of Pangaea Holdings Limited.

 

Mizinga Melu took the title of Business Woman of the Year in the Southern African round, for her pioneering work as the CEO and Managing Director of National Bank of Commerce, Tanzania. Sylvia Banda, Managing Director and Owner of Sylva Food Solutions was this category’s other nominee.

 

First National Bank’s CEO, Michael Jordaan, was lauded as the Southern African Business Leader of the Year. The category’s runners-up were Roland Sassoon, CEO of Sasfin, and Francis Grogan of Zambeef.

 

The Southern Africa Lifetime Achievement Award honoured iconic business innovator, Dr. Richard Maponya, for his unparalleled contributions to African business as an entrepreneur, property developer and retail maverick.

 

Johnnie Walker Blue Label is proud to present Africa’s most prestigious business awards, which pay homage to those who continue to enhance Africa’s prominence on the global business stage, and consistently embody the revolutionary spirit of Johnnie Walker.

 

The Southern African winners of the Johnnie Walker Blue Label Africa All Africa Business Leaders Awards will now walk on to the finale to be hosted by Durban’s Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre, on the 8th of November, where all regional finalists from the Western, Eastern and Southern African rounds will compete for the ultimate business accolade in their respected fields.

Forbes Woman Africa to launch 1 October

ABN Publishing will launch the highly anticipated Forbes Women Africa with the first issue available on shelf beginning October 2013.

 

This new monthly magazine is a pan-African publication that will navigate the world of business for women, with features on the latest trends in the corporate sector and how its architecture speaks to women. The magazine will profile the trailblazers, game changers and pioneers among the women involved in business, the economy of Africa and the world. In line with this, the magazine will also feature the wealthy, powerful and influential women in business whose impact is felt long after they have come and gone.

Black owned and managed investment holding company, Kagiso Tiso Holdings (“KTH”), made an announcement on Tuesday of its Firm Intention to purchase the remaining shares in Kagiso Media Limited (“KML”) that it does not already own.  KTH currently owns 51.1% of KML.

 

KTH has strong roots in the South African investment landscape and was created through a merger between Kagiso Trust Investments and Tiso Group in July 2011. This combination represented a significant transformation milestone in corporate South Africa.  The company has a net asset value of approximately R9bn and in addition to media, also has exposure to other key sectors in the economy ranging from power, insurance and financial services to health.  

 

Once approved, the KML buy-out will become a significant milestone for transformation on the South African landscape.  

Through this transaction KTH is offering minority shareholders a cum dividend cash consideration of R28.50 per share, which represents a 34.5% premium to the 30day VWAP prior to KML’s cautionary announcement on 10 June 2013.  Shareholders of KML will be voting on the transaction at a special general meeting to be held within 60 days of this announcement. The deal will be subject to regulatory approvals.

 

Vuyisa Nkonyeni, CEO of KTH says, “KML has always been a key investment and we aim to build on its success. This transaction forms part of the broader KTH investment strategy and also contributes positively to the transformation of a key sector of the economy.”

Subsequent to attaining shareholder and regulatory approvals, KTH plans to delist KML from the JSE Limited.  KTH regards the transaction as an opportunity to align the KML strategy with that of KTH.

2013 Weekends will never taste the same again with the introduction of Mzansi’s hottest Breakfast Television Show for young Mzansians only on SABC1 Mzansi Fo Sho!sabc1



Mzansi Insider S3 will broadcast live for an hour – every Saturday and Sunday at 09h00 – starting from 07 September 2013.  


The breakfast show promises to be fast-paced, topical, exciting, entertaining and informative and will cover everything from Entertainment News to Health issues.

 

“We are very excited about Mzansi Insider coming back for the 3rd season with a twist, an innovative weekend breakfast show for the youth of South Africa. Supersport bags another set of sports rights

SuperSport International has concluded a five-year exclusive broadcast deal with the Basketball National League (BNL), South Africa’s new professional basketball league.

 

In a first for the sport in South Africa, SuperSport will be broadcast partner to the premier men’s league, giving the sport the impetus to harness the sport’s growing popularity.

 

Matches will be broadcast live, primarily on SuperSport Select (ch 229), and across all platforms, including mobile and online, throughout Sub-Saharan Africa.

 

Eleven franchises make up the league, which will be played on a north-south conference system starting on September 27. “This is an exciting time for basketball in our country,” said Albert Mokoena, chairman of the Basketball National League.

 

“For the first time, basketball will have a truly national premier league giving our top players the opportunity to excel and to compete with the best that Africa has to offer. This will set the stage for basketball to become a major player in sport in our country.”

 

During the first year, venues in Johannesburg and Durban will be used.

 

The Northern Conference will include the following teams: Egoli Magic, North West Goodfellas, Soweto Panthers, Mbombela Wildcats, Polokwane Trailblazers and the Tshwane Suns.

 

The Southern Conference will include: Cape Mountaineers, Kimberley Diamonds, PE Wind Breakers, Free State Golden Warriors and KZN Marlins.

 

The league will begin with a round-robin section before advancing to cross-conference quarterfinals, semifinals and the final on December 6.

 

Said Mokoena: “With SuperSport as our partners and our national league having the endorsement of the Ministry of Sport and Recreation, Sascoc and Basketball SA, our players can look forward to a league where the emphasis will be on a high-quality game combined with entertainment that appeals to the youth.”

 

SuperSport’s Brandon Foot, Head of Acquisitions and Legal, said that the partnership was a natural development following the recent broadcast deal with the internationally-renowned NBA.

 

“There is no question that the sport has a captive market. Basketballers now have an avenue for their skills and we couldn’t be happier to be part of this renewal of the local game. We look forward to a strong association.”

 

Sascoc President Gideon Sam described the broadcast partnership as a major boost for a sport that has hitherto not been regarded as one of the major codes in the country.

 

“Basketball is now setting the benchmark for other codes that do not have access to television to the extent that they would like to have. I am now more confident than before that basketball will put its past behind them and focus on growing the game throughout the country. Sascoc supports this development and wants to encourage corporates to get behind the league.”

Now its Mzansi Bioskop

Mzansi Magic, M-Net’s powerhouse proudly South African brand, is rewriting local television history yet again. On Tuesday 10 September 2013, Mzansi Magic will add the country’s very first full-blown local movie channel, Mzansi Bioskop, to its existing popular offering on DStv.

 

Mzansi Bioskop, which will occupy channel 164 on DStv, will bring unprecedented movie magic to a broad audience. It will be available to DStv customers who get their daily fix of television entertainment on the DStv Access, Family, Compact, Extra and Premium packages.

 

“We all want to see stories from our own backyard about our own people – Mzansi Bioskop will give our customers access to these stories. And at the same time, we support the local film and production industry. It is a win-win situation that gives our customers even more great local entertainment,” said Collins Khumalo, CEO of MultiChoice South Africa.

 

According to Yolisa Phale, Director: M-Net Local Interest Channels, this new channel is a milestone development for both the brand and local filmmaking in general. “This groundbreaking 24/7 original movie channel was born out of viewers’ love of the Lokshin Bioskop films on our channels, but it’s also testament of our commitment to boost the local movie industry like never before. While it will give Mzansi’s film makers the opportunity to showcase their work on another platform, it will also inspire new talent to tell their stories. Mzansi Bioskop will assist to take South African storytelling to the next level.”

 

Mzansi Bioskop will revolve around films that reflect the day-to-day reality of the people of Mzansi. Many of these feature films have been hot hits in bustling make-shift bioscopes in townships across the country and others were made especially for the Mzansi Magic audience. Viewers can look forward to fascinating stories such as Who Made Me Pregnant; 2020 Orlando East; Blame It On Love; The Khumalos and countless other films that have delighted DStv audiences recently.

 

David Kau‘s Taxi Ride will also be one of the big first attractions on the channel.

 

“More good news is that even many more Lokshin Bioskop movies are currently in the making and within the foreseeable future our audiences will be able to enjoy at least 150 brand-new films under the Mzansi Bioskop banner. This will be the home of new film content made by new producers,” Phahle adds.

Johannesburg- The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) and signal distributer SENTECH, have reached an agreement to have SABC channels on a free-to-air basis on the SENTECH Universal Access Direct To Home satellite (DTH-S) platform by the end of September 2013.

 

The agreement will see the SABC providing SABC 1, 2 and 3 as well as SABC News, which is currently airing on Multichoice Platform DStv, while SENTECH will manage the distribution channel for the DTH-S set-top boxes, which will be required for access to the services. The SABC will also add an additional two channels to this platform as soon as they are ready.

 

To-date, 1.7 million households in South Africa do not receive television services because there are no terrestrial television networks in their area. This translates to approximately 5 million people without access. The Universal Access DTH-S platform is particularly created to enable reception of broadcasting services, and in particular, public broadcasting services, to areas where there is no access to normal terrestrial services. The inclusion of the SABC channels on this platform will ensure that more people have an opportunity to receive SABC services.

 

 

The launch of these services will also respond to the concern that the public service channel (SABC News) that is on the DStv pay television platform, should be available to the public.

 

It is also important to note that this launch does not replace Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) that will be launched later, but it is intended to supplement it. SABC 1, 2, 3 and SABC News will be available on DTH-S, DTT and the pay television.

 

The SABC’s Acting Chief Operations Officer (ACOO), Mr. Hlaudi Motsoeneng said “As the SABC our primary focus is to create universal access for all South African citizens, in line with our mandate as a public service broadcaster. The launch of SABC services on the DTH-S platform will help us further this objective and provide a service to the public of South Africa. In addition to the 4.5 million subscribers on the DStv platform, the SABC News channel will now also be available to 1.7 million households, which is in access of 5 million viewers, who have previously not been able to receive any SABC television services on a free-to-air basis”. SENTECH’s Chief Operating Officer (COO) Mr Kganki Matabane said, “SENTECH and the SABC share a common public service mandate to ensure that all public broadcasting services are available to all South African citizens”.

 

Mr Matabane further stated that, “We are quite excited to confirm that SABC services will be available on the Universal Access DTH-S platform; it is even more pleasing to note that the 24 Hour News channel will be available to all citizens on a free-to-air basis as well”.

 

SABC Group CEO (GCEO) Ms. Lulama Mokhobo, together with the CEO of SENTECH Dr. Setumo Mohapi will launch the services at a date to be announced by no later than the end of September 2013.

Durban VJ hopefuls feel the heat

Judge Sizwe Dhlomo is shaping up into the new Simon Cowell of Friday night TV as he sharpens his claws in the MTV Base VJ Search Brought To You By Citroën DS3 Cabrio. The blunt-talking MTV Base star, who himself has been a VJ since 2005, doesn’t mince his words when faced with twenty VJ hopefuls at the Durban callbacks (MTV Base, DStv Channel 322, 23 August at 17:00 CAT).

 

With MTV Base and Citroën searching high and low for the next VJ for music channel MTV Base, the top 20 candidates from last week’s Durban auditions now have to go through their paces at the Durban Country Club in front of Sizwe (@SizweDhlomo), comedian Joey Rasdien (@joeyrasdien) and Gagasi FM DJ Zookey Zarling (@ZarlingZookey).

 

Only three candidates are due to make it through to the next stage and this week the judges are testing the Durban candidates’ improve skills, challenging them to write and present their own scripts, and to interview a host of famous faces including “Beyoncé” and “Toya Delazy”, as impersonated hilariously by local comedian Sifiso Nene.

 

Among the candidates giving their all are identical twins Pretty and Precious, as well as funny chef Big Daddy, electrical engineer Lynton Harvey, singer Tamasha Gambushe and model and radio presenter Wandile Chamane.

 

Former VJ search winner Nomuzi Mabena hosts the fun-packed programme with her typical brio and light-hearted enthusiasm, rejoicing and commiserating with the VJ hopefuls, and getting the lowdown on the contest from the judges.

 

At stake in the talent competition is a knockout prize: a fabulous contract with MTV Base worth R500 000, while the winner will drive away in a brand new Citroën DS3 Cabrio worth R315 000. With just a few minutes to show off their skills, these Durban wannabes have to pull out all the stops to impress the MTV Base producers and make it through to the national callbacks…

A MAZE back in Joburg

After the successful kick off in 2012, A MAZE is back in Johannesburg from Thursday 5 to Saturday 7 of September, 2013.

 

With more than thirty international and African artists, game designers, speakers and musicians showcasing their craft, A MAZE. / Johannesburg brings computer games, music and media art to the public in a dynamic, interactive and fun-filled 3-day event.

 

A MAZE. / Johannesburg will use public spaces across Braamfontein bringing games and media art expression to the public unexpected and memorable ways.

The goal of A MAZE. is to create an annual evolving international platform for African and European media artists and game developers. The festival opens up a playground for everyone who wants to experience creative expression with code, play and technology. A MAZE. / Johannesburg provides a three day program packed with lectures, panel discussions, indiegames, interactive installations, street games, workshops, concerts and parties. 

 

Since its inception in Europe in 2008, A MAZE. has been celebrating the convergence of games, art and technology across Europe, with the HQ being based in Berlin.

 

A MAZE. / Johannesburg 2013 is presented in partnership with the Digital Arts Department of the University of the Witwatersrand, and in cooperation with the Goethe-Institut in Johannesburg.  The event is co-funded by the European Union Network of Institutes of Culture (EUNIC).

Big dreams, big personalities and even bigger hair are all on display as MTV Base VJ Search Brought To You By Citroën DS3 Cabrio goes on air for the first time on MTV Base, channel 322 on Friday at 17:00 CAT.

 

With MTV Base and Citroën searching high and low for the next VJ for music channel MTV Base, Durban is the first stop, as KZN’s talented – and not so talented – would-be VJs turn up in droves in the hope of escaping the ordinary and fulfilling their dreams of TV stardom.

 

Former VJ winner Nomuzi Mabena hosts the fun-packed programme with her typical brio and light-hearted enthusiasm, meeting with some of the hundreds of young hopefuls who turn out at the Gateway Theatre of Shopping, Umhlanga for the auditions, including garrulous twins Pretty and Precious, the zany “Consultant” and ambitious model and radio presenter Wandile Chamane.

 

At stake in the talent competition is a knockout prize: a fabulous contract with MTV Base worth R500 000, while the winner will drive away in a brand new Citroën DS3 Cabrio worth R315 000.
