Top Trader this week saw the remaining contestants spending time at the Thuthuzela Aid Community Centre in Alexandra, Johannesburg.  The contestants were divided into two teams and given their next challenge:  ‘To prepare a presentation on Thuthuzela that could be used to attract potential investors’, Juliet would then choose the best presentation.

Baobab partners, comprising Ori, Johannes and Pule presented first. Whilst Juliet praised the team for covering the centre thoroughly, especially in terms of its financial status and future plans, she felt their presentation did not evoke enough emotion which she believes is key when trying to secure funding from prospective benefactors.  Team Columbus comprising Jason, Mbuso and Tsholofelo were up next.  Their presentation captured Juliet’s imagination from the start by introducing one of the children from the centre.  Juliet did however criticise them for not including enough information about Thuthuzela’s financial commitments and requirements.

In another gruelling tribunal, each contestant faced the mentors to hear whether or not their trades had managed to get the thumbs up.  Some of the trader’s portfolios continued to slide further into the red, whilst Jason and Ori advanced their gains by leaps and bounds.

The contestants were then asked to produce a 30 sec PSA (Public Service Announcement) for television.  The brief was to create an advert that could be broadcast on television to raise funds for Thuthuzela.  Ori, Johannes and Pule went with a simple approach using graphics and emotive music.  Jason, Tsholofelo and Mbuso decided to make an advert using Jason as their spokesperson. The winning PSA will be announced in the final episode of Top Trader.

After an exhausting day, the contestants had to face the mentors for an elimination session.  First up, Juliet announced the team behind the winning presentation on Thuthuzela:  Jason, Mbuso and Tsholofelo.  Baobab Partners remained in the elimination room to hear their fate.  As Ori had the highest portfolio value in his team, he was saved.  The remaining two had to plead with the mentors in an attempt to save themselves from being sent home.  In what seemed like a particularly long deliberation, the mentors had made their decision.  The next contestant to be eliminated was Johannes. The Top Trader 2013 experience has come to an end for Johannes Malan, who said his goodbyes and was sent back to Cape Town.

Team Columbus get to fight another round

Posted by radio On October - 25 - 2013 ADD COMMENTS

On Top Trader this week, the contestants were tutored on technical analysis with Warrick Selzer of Wealth Skills.  They then had to put all this knowledge to the test in their next challenge. Before they could get to their task, they faced the mentors in yet another gruelling tribunal.  Each trader’s portfolio was scrutinised and they had to come up with some really good reasons for their week’s trades.

The challenge for this week was to select two shares from the JSE Top 100 and perform a thorough technical analysis on these shares.  The traders were divided into two teams, team Baobab Partners headed by Ori, with Pule and Johannes and team Columbus headed by Jason, with Mbuso and Tsolofelo.  But before the teams presented their technical analyses to the mentors, they had the opportunity to have a dry run with presenter Juliet Newell.  Juliet gave the team’s tips and advice on how they could improve their presentations.

In the late afternoon, the contestants presented to the mentors Gerhard Lampen, Ian Cruickshanks and guest mentor Warrick Selzer.  Following much deliberation, the mentors picked the winners for this week’s challenge:  Baobab Partners.  The losing team were then called in for a round of elimination.

Jason, Mbuso and Tsolofelo each had to nominate who they thought should be eliminated and with Jason’s portfolio posting the biggest profits of the team, he was given immunity.  But, as the competition had already lost one contestant through elimination and another through disqualification, it was decided that this would not be an elimination round.  Mbuso fell to his knees with relief and all three contestants got to trade another week in the CNBC Africa Top Trader 2013 competition.

Anele Mdoda to host MySchool Dream School SA

Posted by radio On October - 16 - 2013 ADD COMMENTS

What happens when you take 15 youths that have “dropped out” of school and give them a second chance?

And what happens if we create a “dream school”, with amazing celebrity teachers willing to share their knowledge and passion, and see if these learners can rediscover education in a whole new way?

The new reality TV series MySchool Dream School SA which premiered on M-Net and Mzansi Magic on Sunday, 13th October at 17:00pm aims to help us find answers to these critical questions. The series is a South African first and aims to rekindle a 21st century generation’s love for learning. The series will also be simulcast on M-Net101, M-Net HD, Mzansi Magic and M-Net Series Channel.

Running for 13 weeks, MySchool Dream School SA takes the format of a documentary reality show and tries to answer one question: Can we re-engage the unengaged? Fifteen learners who have dropped out, or who are in danger of dropping out, come together for a two-week period and spend their time with celebrity teachers and mentors, opening a door for them to have another chance to complete their high school education. In a country where the matric pass rate is less than 80% and the unemployment rate is 25.6%; it is crucial to for any child to get a decent education to give themselves a chance at a better life.

The cast is the face of young South Africa. Natasha (17, Mitchell’s Plain), Zama (18, Soweto), Trevor (16, Durban), Nisaa (16, Manenberg), Lihle (17, Khayelitsha), Waunita (17, Pretoria), Monique (18, Johannesburg), Simphiwe (16, Langa), Keagan (15, Kempton Park), Thandeka (17, Dobsonville), Tshepo (19, Soweto), Masi (17, Woodstock), Chenique (15, Hanover Park), Vincent (15, Cape Town) and Nuraan (15, Hanover Park) are struggling to complete their high school education and all have their own unique stories. When they get together for Dream School SA they have the opportunity to re-engage with their educational journey.

With the aim of inspiring young people MySchool Dream School SA has an impressive line-up of educators and celebrities. Hosted by Anele Mdoda, with Johan Volsteedt (recently retired from Grey College) as headmaster, the rest of the teaching ‘staff’ includes the likes of South African struggle hero Denis Goldberg, journalist and author Tim Butcher, Prof. Jonathan Jansen, Cobra’s coach Paul Adams, Freshly Ground’s Zolani Mahola, celebrity cook Karen Dudley, and Dance for All’s Philip Boyd. Covering all school subjects, and using cutting-edge iPad technology, MySchool Dream School SA focuses as much on the learner’s emotional well-being as on their academic education, with the daily involvement of a psychologist and also including subjects such as dance, cooking, and life skills.

Eleni Giokos leaves eNCA

Posted by radio On October - 12 - 2013 ADD COMMENTS

eNCA regrets to announce that news anchor Eleni Giokos will be leaving the channel.

Giokos was a rising star within the organisation having joined eNCA from CNBC Africa in 2011. However she will soon be joining Bloomberg TV Africa as an anchor working out of Johannesburg.

“We’re very sad Eleni is leaving us. She is a very popular member of the team and a true professional” says Group Head of eNCA, Patrick Conroy.

Giokos was destined to anchor a new business show on eNCA, but opted to join Bloomberg TV Africa after lengthy talks with both channels.

“I’m very torn about my decision. eNCA offered me a tremendous opportunity which sadly I’ve had to turn down. I had some of my best times as a broadcaster at eNCA. My bosses and my colleagues were always amazingly supportive and great to work with. I learnt so much from Patrick Conroy and working in such a professional environment. And so it is with a heavy heart that I find myself having to say goodbye.”

Giokos was an instant on screen success for eNCA anchoring live breaking news events such as the Nairobi terror attacks and the Oscar Pistorius saga in February.

Earlier this year legendary CNN business anchor, Richard Quest, agreed to co-host a show with her on eNCA.

“In the competitive world of 24 hour news your talent is always at risk of being poached. eNCA has become a recruitment ground for international networks and rival 24 hour news channels. We actually take it as a compliment. So it is with mixed feelings that we say goodbye to Eleni. We had hoped she would stay with us, however we are proud that she is held in such high regard by a major international broadcaster” says Conroy.

eNCA will announce her replacement in coming weeks.
