Saffron TV to close

Posted by radio On August - 7 - 2013 ADD COMMENTS

From 1 September 2013, Saffron TV (channel 195) will stop broadcasting and will as result no longer be available on the DStv Indian package.

Saffron TV – produced by Ochre Moving Pictures, a subsidiary of the Times Media Group – launched on DStv in September 2008. It offered a platform for the South African Indian community to showcase its cultural events and to tell its stories through projects like the African Indian Odyssey that commemorated 150 years of the Indian community in South Africa.

The channel also featured great local television talent like Shalandra Bunseelal as the host of Star Attraction and Yudhika Sujanani as the glamorous chef behind a number of food shows.

“Unfortunately we were not able to secure the necessary advertising support to make the channel economically viable. The Times Media Group continued to support the channel despite ongoing losses. The decision to close the channel has been a difficult one and has been taken after much consideration,” said Andrew Gill, Deputy MD of Media at Times Media.

Robyn Smith, content manager, MultiChoice South Africa commented: “Saffron TV was a good addition on the DStv Indian package and it’s sad that the channel will close. We can assure our loyal customers in the Indian community that we will continue to offer them great entertainment through our specialised Indian packages.”

DStv Explora to enhance tv experience

Posted by radio On July - 31 - 2013 ADD COMMENTS

MultiChoice today announced another innovation milestone with the introduction of its next-generation PVR decoder, the DStv Explora. The new DStv Explora is set to significantly change the way South Africans experience and control their TV.

With the DStv Explora, subscribers can now record up to 220 hours of high definition television, which equates to approximately 100 movies or 150 TV series episodes. In addition, the 2 terabyte hard drive of the new DStv Explora will enable DStv to offer a larger content selection on its popular Catch Up service, bringing the total amount of HD content up to approximately 200 hours, all of which can be accessed on demand.

In plain terms, the DStv Explora is a PVR on “steroids”.

“We constantly find ourselves dealing with the reality that South Africa lags behind the rest of the world in fixed broadband penetration,” says Collins Khumalo, CEO of Multichoice South Africa.

“In the absence of affordable high-speed broadband access for most South Africans, delivering our content via satellite remains the most reliable way to ensure that our customers have the best viewing experience, without buffering or waiting for downloads. We want to provide our customers with a rich, high-definition video-on-demand experience; similar to what they would get in markets where broadband is a lot more accessible. We developed the DStv Explora to achieve this vision,” Khumalo says.

The key launch features of the DStv Explora include:

Expanded Video-on-Demand Content

The DStv Catch Up service has been significantly expanded on the Explora, and now offers three times more video-on-demand programming to DStv subscribers.

“We’ve expanded the number of series available and now also started to introduce series stacking (i.e. making two episodes of selected series available on demand), which will later be expanded to 4 episodes,” John Kotsaftis, CEO of DStv Online says.

“This means that viewers will always be able to catch-up with all the hot new TV series when they become ‘water cooler talk’ at the office, and never miss being part of the conversation.”

The DStv Catch Up service now also includes 30 movies on demand and the content selection will be expanded to other categories such as documentaries and kids’ content in the future.

For subscribers that love DStv BoxOffice, the movie selection will be expanded to 20 of the freshest new release blockbuster movies, ready to rent from the comfort of your couch, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Amazing Content Discovery and User Interface

DStv Explora is packaged with a brand new, stylish HD user interface, which makes finding favourite shows or movies on BoxOffice and Catch Up so much easier. Content is displayed using HD poster-art – just like an Internet VOD service.

The Explora has powerful search features that help customers find programmes quicker and easier as it searches across the eight-day TV Guide, Catch Up, BoxOffice and their own recordings (playlist).

Explora’s remote control further enhances the experience with dedicated shortcut buttons to DStv Central, BoxOffice, Catch Up, Playlist, Search, Live TV and other viewing options.

Built with the future in mind

Khumalo adds that DStv has built this next-generation decoder with the future and the internet in mind.

“More features will be enabled over the coming months such as delivering content via broadband, setting of remote recordings and one-click BoxOffice rentals, just to name a few,” he says.

“We believe the DStv Explora will give our customers greater control of their viewing experience with access to their favourite programmes when it suits them. The DStv Explora is THE device that will take TV entertainment into the future,” Khumalo concludes.

DStv Explora will be available in retail stores from 15 August and is priced at R2 499.

Bloomberg back on DStv

Posted by radio On July - 13 - 2013 ADD COMMENTS

MultiChoice has announced that it will reinstate Bloomberg as a 24-hour channel on DStv channel 411 from Monday, 15 July.

For the past two weeks, local channel Business Day TV has been carrying 10 hours of Bloomberg Television programmes.

Following feedback from DStv customers – that they prefer to have local and international business news on separate channels – the decision to include Bloomberg content on Business Day TV was reviewed.

“DStv customers told us that they need to have a 24-hour international business news channel and a separate local business news channel. We are pleased that we are able to accommodate this need,” said Collins Khumalo, CEO for MultiChoice South Africa.

Business Day TV head Vernon Matzopoulos said: “We stepped in to keep Bloomberg on air over South Africa. Now that they are back with their own channel, Business Day TV viewers can look forward to an uninterrupted schedule of the best of local business news, markets and investment programmes from South Africa’s most credible editorial brand.”

“Southern African business decision makers have come to rely on Bloomberg Television’s international, 24-hour business and financial news. DStv Premium customers will now benefit again from our extensive coverage of leading business, economic and market-moving stories, says Malcolm Fried, head of Bloomberg Television, EMEA.
