Following the success of the first Rise & Shine Eco-Friendly Acoustic Music Festival, Rain Productions, Pangolin Productions & MixFM 93.8 in association with Greenpop bring you the next edition on Saturday 8 June 2013.

 

The festival will provides an opportunity for music-lovers to return to the garden oasis that is Sandton Central Park, while enjoying some of South Africa’s brightest musical talents in their acoustic formats.

 

The first Rise & Shine raised over 60 trees, ensuring a Green footprint was left behind. Rise & Shine, in association with Greenpop, will once again plant a tree for every 50 people that attend the festival. Collectively, festival-goers will be responsible for the small forest we have already created continuing to grow.

 

Tickets will be for sale at www.ticketbreak.co.za at R150 per person, with the option of paying an additional R100 for a ‘Green ticket’, whereby Greenpop will plant a tree on your behalf in Zambia in July. A certificate with the co-ordinates of your sponsored tree will be sent to you once its toes are in the soil.

 

Festival-goers will also be able to volunteer to join Greenpop in planting the trees by visiting www.greenpop.org.

 

The line-up includes Francois van Coke, Naming James, Laurie Levine, Bongeziwe Mabandla, Black Cat Bones, Lucy Kruger, Them Particles and Earl Grey & Croquet.

 

In addition to the world-class music on offer, guests are encouraged to arrive at the park as early as 9.00am for a Yoga session included in the ticket price.

 

With the Gautrain in walking distance from Sandton Central Park, guests from as far afield as Pretoria, Centurion, Midrand, Benoni & Rosebank will be able to join in the festivities. The festival concludes at 6.00pm & the Gautrain runs every 30 minutes until 8.30pm on the day.

 

Those driving to the event are encouraged to car-pool & park their vehicles within the safe confines of Sandton City from where it is a gentle 500m stroll to the park. Saturday parking is a flat-rate fee of R10 for the day.

 

This outdoor production aims to showcase – through entertainment, enjoyment & experience – what can be achieved through a collective awareness.

Fally Ipupa (@fallyipupa01) and Professor (@professorkalawa) are the latest stars to sign up for MTV Africa All Stars KwaZulu-Natal with Snoop Lion, the urban music extravaganza staged by MTV Base (DStv Channel 322) and KwaZulu-Natal Province in Durban, South Africa.

 

MTV Africa All Stars KwaZulu-Natal is fast shaping up as the most exciting urban music event of the decade as Fally Ipupa and Professor join previously announced artists Snoop Lion (@SnoopLion), 2Face (@2faceidibia), Flavour (@2niteFlavour) and Zakes Bantwini (@ZakesBantwiniSA) on the bill for the concert. The event is being staged at the Moses Mabhida Stadium (@MMStadium), People’s Park, in Durban on 18 May.

 

Charismatic Congolese star Fally Ipupa, who first made a musical impact with hits like Eternellement and Ko Ko Ko Ko alongside veteran musician Koffi Olomide, is making a rare trip to South Africa for the All Stars gig. Ipupa made his mark as a solo artist after the 2006 release of his debut album Droit Chemin. His 2009 album Arsenal de Belles Mélodies brought him to global attention; thanks to hits like Chaise Electrique, a bilingual love song featuring former G-Unit vocalist Olivia. Blending a silky smooth voice with a range of music genres from soukous to ndombolo, pop and R’n’B, Ipupa has won legions of fans and music industry accolades. In 2010 he took home two MTV Africa Music Awards, one for Best Video (Sexy Dance featuring Krys) and another for Best Francophone Artist. Ipupa recently announced that he has been signed to Universal Music France for a 3-album deal – a significant endorsement for the DRC-based singer.

 

Well known for his jaw-dropping beats and catchy lyrics, Durban native and South African kwaito guru Professor hit the headlines with his first solo album University of Kalawa Jazmee, thanks to hypnotic hits such as Jezebel, Lento and Jimaphi which filled club dance-floors and dominated the radio airwaves across South Africa. Recognition of his talents came at the 2011 MTN South African Music Awards, where he won Best Kwaito Album, Best Male & Record of the Year, and Professor has since been making more waves thanks to the success of his second album, Orientation.

Music Is A Great Investment (MIAGI) has committed to send both the MIAGI Youth Orchestra and the MIAGI Jazz Band to Central Europe and Scandinavia in 2014 for a sensational musical tour.

 

The tour is in celebration of 20 years of South African democracy and the two MIAGI groups will be collaborating at the highest level, performing on prestigious international stages.  MIAGI’s Youth Orchestra and Youth Jazz Band are both made up of the finest young musicians from all social and ethnic backgrounds and have been trained extensively under the mentorship of some of the world’s finest musicians and conductors.

 

18 top instructors from across the globe will be mentoring the young musicians and assisting in their tour program alongside British conductor Duncan Ward, first assistant to Sir Simon Rattle at the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra as they gather for training at the Heronbridge College in Johannesburg.  There will be an open day for media and sponsors on the 4th May in order for the world to witness what these 110 young musicians are capable of doing.

 

The program being performed on this tour is radical and challenging for the young musicians: Shostakovich’s Age Of Gold Suite and Suite for Variety Stage Orchestra (Jazz Suite No. 2) and Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique.  Furthermore MIAGI creates an environment where young South African musicians have an opportunity to test and showcase their skills as improvisers as composers as they rehearse and improvise together, exposed to new musical influences from South Africa and abroad.  At this course, a traditional Xincaynincayi dance group from Limpopo known as The Caravan Dance Group is bringing traditional ethnic dance into the performances.

 

Special star soloist from abroad is Anders Paulsson from Sweden, widely recognized as one of the world’s leading soprano saxophonist. He will be creating a new work together with the South African young musicians and two Swedish rappers, Rikard De Bruin and Marcus Larsson. Paulsson’s and the two young Swedish Rapper’s presence at the course forms part of the ‘MIAGI and the Swedish Odyssey – with The Times’ project, funded by the Swedish Embassy in Pretoria through Sida.  Within this project MIAGI has the privilege to collaborate with Fryshuset, a unique social and educational institution in Stockholm that supports and educates vulnerable youth by nurturing their passions such as visual arts, art, theatre, music or sport, and  Lilla Akademien, a music academy offering music education at the highest level.

 

It is an exciting time for these 110 young musicians, stemming from backgrounds ranging from townships to suburbs around the country.  Together they have made remarkable strides in their artistic lives and will continue to be rewarded by MIAGI through opportunity and mentorship.

MTN SAMA concert to rock PE on Freedom Day

The much anticipated MTN South African Music Awards Concert is set to take place in ‘the friendly city’ of Port Elizabeth today Saturday, 27th April 2013 at the Nelson Mandela Bay University Indoor Arena, Missionvale Campus. As a prelude to the MTN SAMA 19 on May 10th and 11th at Sun City, the concert will feature Mzansi’s finest musicians previously nominated in the MTN SAMAs.

 

The list of performances will showcase a selection of MTN SAMA nominees including … and other artists such as kwaito sensations Character and Big Nuz, hip-hop artist Zakwe, Afro Pop star Kelly Khumalo, Afro Soul singer Zonke and the undisputed king of Downloads, DJ Cleo, who has walked away with 12 MTN SAMA awards to date.

Meet the new SAMA CEO Nhlanhla Sibisi

Nhlanhla Paul Sibisi took over from Randall Abrahams when he was appointed the head of the MTN South African Music Awards in September 2012.

He walked into his position after the controversy surrounding the decision to shrink and amalgamate the number of categories in the SAMAs, which caused a hullabaloo amongst industry professionals and artists.

 

His tenure as CEO of the SAMAs hasn’t been without controversy either. This involved an outcry from the public and the media about the inclusion of the DJ Vetkuk vs. Mahoota tune, Stokvel  and the omission of Dr Malinga’s Via Orlando in the Top 20 most played songs making up the  Record of the Year category, which is the only one voted for by the public.

“I find that the communication between members of the public, the media and the organisers of the SAMAs still need to be improved. The rules and processes which we work with are not explained properly to those on the outside. The submissions that MTN SAMA 19 is working with are from 1 December 2011 to the end of November 2012 and the Dr Malinga song was only picked up afterwards. I have had to meet with journalists to reintroduce this to them so they can relay it to the public,” Sibisi explains.

 

His experience includes having been the General Manager of the Recording Industry of South Africa (RISA) in 1999, which he admits comes in handy when it comes to resolving conflicts. This position at RISA also saw him working and heading the SAMAs.

“We did not have a SAMA CEO until Sean Watson became the first. So when you worked for RISA, you automatically worked on the SAMAs as well,” he clarifies.

So the SAMAs are not new to him. He has merely come back to the industry he knows very well. Talking about doing the SAMAs the second time around he says, “Back then we worked with a smaller budget. That is obviously different now, but the issues remain the same. What has improved is how the event is organised. The systems are almost flawless, processes are clear and everything is done electronically. The challenge is to communicate these processes to most people.”

Sibisi hails from Soweto in Mofolo North where he schooled and matriculated. He went to Kwa Zulu Natal where he got his law degree from the University of Durban Westville.

After completing his articles, in 1997, at one of Johannesburg’s top commercial law firm, Webber Wentzel, he continued as a practicing corporate and media law attorney prior to joining Telkom Limited, in 1999, as a Legal Advisor.  After his stint as General Manager at RISA in the same year, he joined Sony Music Entertainment South Africa (SMESA), in 2001, as its Director of Legal and Business Affairs.

 

In 2008 Sibisi was recruited by the SABC as its General Manger for Business Acquisitions. He was also the Chairman of the SABC 2010 operational committee which was responsible for the SABC broadcast of the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

 

Before taking up his current position, he was the Managing Director of Nuritone Investments (Pty) Limited (which trades as the Rights Clearance & Administration), a one-stop music rights clearance and advisory services company in Africa, focusing, primarily, on assisting Mobile Network Operators, Broadcasters, Ad Agencies, Film and Production Houses to license and clear music usage rights.

 

When talking about his observations of the music industry he speaks of a dynamic industry whose growth is being retarded by piracy. He feels the government has a role to play in helping to unlock the industry’s potential. “We speak of Mzansi’s untapped economy, I believe part of that is hidden in the music industry,” he says.

 

His vision for the SAMAs is clear. “I would love to have an environment where we start provincialising some of the SAMA activities, having mini awards in certain provinces culminating in the big event. We have massive talent in other provinces that Gauteng can’t unearth. I would love to have a SAMA that is seen to celebrate, but also develop,” Sibisi says.

 

He is an avid music lover who enjoys discovering new sounds and being part of the SAMAs allows him to have a broad sense of what South African music is all about. For the big MTN SAMA 19 event at Sun City on May 10 and 11, he promises a benchmark entertainment show that will keep the audiences at home on the edge of their seats.

SAMRO announces leadership changes

JOHANNESBURG – The Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Southern African Music Rights Organization (SAMRO), Reverend Abe Sibiya, announced yesterday that the organization’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Mr. Nicholas Motsatse, will be stepping down from his role at the end of June this year. He will be replaced by the current Deputy CEO, Mr. Sipho Dlamini.

 

In announcing the changes Sibiya stated that Motsatse had informed him of his intention to step down during the latter part of last year. He said: “It is with a mixture of sadness and loss, yet again, a sense of appreciation for one of our great leaders who has decided over a considerable period of time to explore much of what life has to offer while there is sunshine. I therefore wish to announce to you that Mr Motsatse, our CEO and a Chairperson’s dream, has after much thought and discussion with his family reached the decision to bid SAMRO farewell.” Sibiya also stated that Motsatse’s decision was personal and had nothing to do with the changes in Chairmanship or any other matter related to SAMRO.

 

Commenting on his decision to step down, Motsatse said that he had given the matter a great deal of thought and it was not a decision taken lightly. ‘I have had the privilege of working with a very competent and supportive Board and I could not ask for any better. My time at SAMRO will always be the highlight of my career as a manager and a leader. I however believe that the time is right for a new leadership to take this organization to greater heights,” he said.  

 

The incoming CEO, Sipho Dlamini, joined SAMRO at the beginning of 2012 as GM: Marketing. He was promoted to the position of Deputy CEO at the beginning of 2013 to give him an opportunity to work closely with Motsatse. Commenting on his appointment Sibiya states: “Mr Dlamini is his own man, a thinker, an executive full of promise, articulate, precise and very well versed in this industry.” He elaborated: “If we are to manage change well, then we all must believe in the wisdom of preparation and succession. SAMRO is a complicated organization and so are its processes, relationships locally and internationally. It begs and calls for a man or woman who can fill the great shoes of previous SAMRO CEO’s with distinction as is the expected tradition.”

 

“I am deeply honoured to have been given the opportunity to lead team SAMRO at this important juncture in its development. Having just passed the half a century mark as an organization, I am fully aware of the challenges but also the opportunities lying ahead of SAMRO. It is therefore with a sense of excitement and anticipation that I accept this very important responsibility,” said Dlamini.

 

The rapidly changing business environment, especially for the copyright and music industries, will mean that the new pair of Sibiya and Dlamini will be critical in steering the organization through some major developments. Fortunately, the track records of both these gentlemen in the music industry and the global business environment will stand them in good stead.

5FM has a quota of 30% local music but has specific shows intended strictly for local content with shows such as Live to the Power of 5 / (live)5 featuring local artists performing live.  

 

But according to musician and radio producer, Zarcia Zacheus, this is still not enough. “When one looks at how many local artists are producing really amazing work and compare that with the percentage of local music that is played on our radio stations then it makes you realise that the percentage of local music played is still too low. However, when tackling the debate on how much local music is played on our radio stations one should bear in mind that these conditions (local to international music ratios) are outlined in the licensing conditions and radio stations are then obliged to fulfil these conditions,” she says.

 

She goes on to say that in recent years the quality of music produced has increased tremendously yet airplay on radio does not reflect that. “So, I think that the “quantity but quality” reason was good at first, but has to a certain extent become a lame excuse used by stations that are reluctant to schedule local music. In an ideal world radio stations would still be conscious of the fact that we are part of a global village and also remain conscious of the responsibility that we have – the telling of our local stories and the scheduling of local music,” Zacheus adds.

 

Mothusi Thusi, A&R Assistant at Universal Music and band member of The Fridge, says there has been a slight increase in local music content on radio, but it hasn’t been monumental. He emphasizes that international music still dominates. His band The Fridge is one of many groups that are doing amazing things in the live music scene, but may never make it onto radio.   

 

Respected composer, singer songwriter and musician, Concord Nkabinde, acknowledges the willingness from radio stations to increase the percentage of local music played, but feels there is still room for improvement. His take is that there’s a need to find ways not only to increase the quota but to also monitor and enforce more local music content across the board.

 

“The issue of low local musical content, particularly on radio, is not an issue of musical taste but a lack of vision and understanding on the part of those in key positions. They do not seem to see how crucial it is to protect and nurture the ‘conscience’ of a nation through the arts. In a world with so many loud & contradicting voices, we need to be constantly reminding ourselves of who we are and how special that is.

 

It doesn’t help that people who make decisions on radio’s musical content are often “celebrities” who are known for ‘loving’ music but may have little or no insight and understanding of music itself and the power music carries towards building a nation that takes pride in itself. It also does not help that advertisers’ funding is what sustains radio stations and they therefore dictate the content,” he says.

 

Nkabinde also points out that more exposure and awareness of local music to locals has great potential on general music industry growth as well as the growth of the live music circuit with more active music venues and even increased music sales. “The idea is not to just increase the percentage of local content on radio but we also need a strong political will and a focused business vision that will speak to a true commitment to developing the consciousness of our people,” he says in conclusion.
