BASIC LEAD, the organizers of the DISCOP film and television content markets and coproduction forum today unveiled reinforced efforts to firmly establish the annual DISCOP Johannesburg  as the world’s #1 destination to source, acquire, and coproduce entertainment content “Made in Africa.”

Organizers are launching a new initiative to put film and televised content from sub-Saharan Africa front and center during DISCOP Johannesburg 2017, taking place from October 25 – 27 at the Sandton Convention Centre. A variety of campaigns will be deployed in the next six months to reach out to international broadcasters, pay-tv operators, streaming services, theatrical distributors, and sales agents seeking diverse and high-quality content.

This initiative underscores what has been a long-running commitment by the organizers to both showcase African homegrown content and develop coproduction opportunities across sub-Saharan Africa. With 267 of the 347 production and distribution houses in attendance last year hailing from 36 African countries, DISCOP Johannesburg is already the largest gathering of African content production and distribution executives under one roof.

“We proudly declared after DISCOP Johannesburg 2016 that African content is King,” explains Patrick Zuchowicki, CEO of Basic Lead and founder of the DISCOP markets, ” and while African content has long struggled to reach audiences outside the continent, the presence at last year’s DISCOP Johannesburg of some of the major global streamers – the new kids on the buying block – proved that content “Made in Africa” could be a disruptive force. There is an appetite for new projects with universal appeal and competition increases for fresh talent that can travel across all borders.”

As African produced content continues to draw the attention of distributors and content aggregators from around the world, thematic hubs will be set-up to showcase content “Made in Africa”, such as the PAVILION FRANCOPHONE AFRICAIN promoting indepentley produced French-speaking content; the DIGILAB AFRICA unbrella to spotlight innovations in virtual reality and 360-degree storytelling,  and the ANIMATION VILLAGE to welcome Africa’s most creative animators.

Indeed, DISCOP Johannesburg 2017 will continue with its strong focus on African animation through its continued partnership with the AFRICAN ANIMATION NETWORK who will be hosting the ANIMATION VILLAGE. Nick Wilson, Project Manager of the African Animation Network, has this to say of the partnership, “The African Animation Network is delighted to continue to build on the animation presence at DISCOP Markets.  African animation creators are invited to compete in our pitching competitions (Annecy – MIFA Pitches Animation du Monde) and skills development programme (Annecy – MIFA Animation du Monde – Skills Programme) which are presented in partnership with Annecy International animated Film Festival.  We’re extremely excited to host delegates from across the continent representing the widest diversity of the African animation industry and in line with the mantra “Made in Africa”.

Thanks to their extensive talent, shooting locations and skills pool as well as generous incentive programmes, South Africa and the City of Johannsburg will play a central role in the organizers’s plans to turn DISCOP Johannesburg into the World’s #1 destination to source, acquire, and coproduce entertainment content “Made in Africa”. Germany will be officially  welcome as DISCOP Johannesburg 2017’s “Guest Country”, and a MASTER CLASS program centered on the benefits of the existing co-production treaties between Germany and South Africa that covers both filmed and televised content.

Showmax on Apple TV and Chromecast

Posted by radio On March - 31 - 2017 ADD COMMENTS

Don’t have a smart TV? Don’t worry – you don’t need one, even if you want to stream the 25 000+ series, movies, documentaries and kids’ shows available on Showmax on your big screen.

If you have a big-screen TV and a streaming media player, whether it’s an Apple TV or Google Chromecast, all you need is your iOS or Android phone or tablet, the latest version of the Showmax app, a Showmax subscription, and a Wi-Fi connection, and you’re good to go.

Read on to find out more about how Showmax works on Apple TV and Chromecast.

Showmax for Apple TV

An Apple TV device plugs into your TV through an HDMI port. It functions like a “converter”, boosting your regular TV’s capabilities to those of a smart TV. By connecting to the internet over a Wi-Fi connection, and to your TV through the HDMI cable, it essentially connects your TV to the internet.

The way you use your Apple TV device to access Showmax depends on the version of Apple TV you have.

If you have the latest version, known as the fourth-generation Apple TV, streaming from Showmax is incredibly simple. All you have to do is search for and download the Showmax app on the Apple TV App Store, and enter your Showmax log in details (if you’re already a subscriber – if not, go to www.showmax.com to subscribe). And that’s it! You’ll now be able to stream series and movies from Showmax directly to your TV through Apple TV – you don’t need to use your iOS device at all.

But if you’re the owner of one of the earlier versions of Apple TV (i.e. second or third generation), you’ll need to use the AirPlay functionality. Luckily, it’s a very simple process. First, download the latest version of the Showmax app on your iOS phone or tablet. Log in if you’re already a subscriber (if you’re a new user, sign up here.) Now, use your phone or tablet to search for and select the show you want to stream. You will see an AirPlay icon on the bottom right corner of the video player on your device. Select this icon and pair to your Apple TV. The device will “send” the shows to your Apple TV over your Wi-Fi connection, and Apple TV will then stream them directly to your TV screen.

Remember that your phone or tablet will also need to be connected to Wi-Fi, or you’ll be using your mobile data for streaming.

Showmax for Chromecast

Chromecast is a media streaming device that is similar to Apple TV, but is compatible with Android phones and tablets. It plugs into the HDMI port on your big-screen TV and connects to the internet over Wi-Fi, and it lets you stream shows from your phone or tablet onto your TV.

The latest version of the Showmax app has Chromecast support, which means that Showmax subscribers can stream shows from their phone or tablet onto their TVs. Simply download the latest version of the Showmax app from the Play Store, and enter your log-in details if you’re already a subscriber (or sign-up here if you’re a new user). Select the Google Cast icon and pair to your Chromecast receiver. Then search for and select the shows you want to stream. Press play, and the show will be on your TV instantly.

As long as your phone or tablet is running a version of Android that’s 4.1.0 (JellyBean) or higher, and you have a Wi-Fi connection at home that your mobile device and your Chromecast device can connect to, there’s nothing standing between you and your favourite binge-worthy shows on your big-screen TV – even if you don’t have a smart TV.
