Digital Entertainment on Demand (DEOD) is going live in South Africa, offering a selection of rental and subscription video entertainment on-demand services, including news and sports Internet TV channels, direct to viewers’ phones, tablets, and laptops. A range of Smart TV applications, plus Chromecast and Airplay support will also be offered in the coming weeks.

 

Unlike traditional free-to-air and pay-TV services, DEOD offers true freedom of choice: consumers can enjoy Internet TV channel programming, subscribe to bouquets of content to watch as they choose, or they can simply opt to rent individual movies on a pay-per-view basis – anywhere, any time.

 

DEOD is being launched in South Africa and markets across Africa by video on demand (VOD) solutions provider, Discover Digital, in partnership with regional telcos and businesses.

 

“Viewers today want freedom of choice. They want customisable, affordable access to movies, news, sports, music and TV series wherever they are,” says Discover Digital Managing Director, Stephen Watson. “Our disruptive new model breaks the traditional broadcast and pay-TV mould by letting viewers choose the channel category packages they want and what subscription models they prefer.”

 

Priced from only R49 for the News Service and R99 for the Sports Service, to R189 for the Premium Package which includes all news and sports channels, DEOD Sports Network (DSN) and a selection of series, music videos and movies on- demand. DEOD offers premium on-demand content subscriptions at a price viewers can afford. The DEOD Rental Service also offers viewers the option to rent a selection of movies from the latest off cinema to classics on a pay-per-view basis from as little as R18-R30.

 

“Discover Digital’s highly flexible platforms mean we can constantly repackage content and bouquets to meet viewer demands,” says Watson. “For example, we offer a sports pack of five world sports channels including the Motorvision motorsports channel, Sportskool, Channel Edge HD extreme sports, Fightbox HD, and the Nautical Sailing and Boating Channel. We have a news pack of leading global news channels including Al Jazeera, Africanews, Euronews, Bloomberg, Russia Today, and France24, with more channels being added soon including BBC World News. We also offer short-term Premium subscriptions that give viewers access just for a weekend at R49 or just a week at R69, as well as special interest channels and VOD bouquets for kids and music lovers as well as faith and inspiration-related programming.”

 

 

DEOD Sports Network (DSN) is offered in all packages and delivers world sports news, covering major sports championships and leagues, including the Olympics, Football, Rugby, Golf, Cricket, Tennis and more. Viewers can catch up on daily short news stories, player and coach interviews on-demand. Advertisers and broadcast sponsors can also partner with DEOD to activate this content to engage with consumers.

 

Watson says DEOD also breaks new ground for mobile viewers, delivering a premium viewing experience with little to no latency, even on mobile phones. “To really experience the benefits of VOD, which is about consuming what you want, where you want and when you want, it has to be suitable for mobile too,” says Watson. “We put in-country CDNs, caching and networks in place, and we use adaptive bitrate technology to ensure that viewers in every country enjoy the best possible viewing experience. We have also added the ability for viewers to schedule the download of selected content for off-line playback. Very soon consumers will also be able to download immediately or schedule the download for off-peak data periods, to take advantage of the off-peak data rates that most ISP and telcos offer.” Adding to the convenience of this innovative new on-demand service, DEOD payment systems will include credit cards, debit orders and voucher payment/redemption options through our DEOD Partnerships, plus future mobile money and charge to bill options in partnerships with telcos and mobile wallet operators.

iQIYI and Netflix Sign Licensing Agreement

iQIYI and Netflix have signed a content licensing agreement for a subset of Netflix original series like Stranger Things and Black Mirror. Though expectations of our deal are modest in scope, we are delighted that consumers will be able to enjoy these highly-popular series on iQIYI, the leading online video platform in China. Our cooperation will be subject to the relevant regulations on online streaming of imported drama and film content in China.

Minnie & Lungsta to co-host Homeground

If there’s one thing Mzansi Magic fans are crazy about, it’s lifestyle entertainment, their next favourite being sport – so this May, Mzansi Magic and SuperSport are giving viewers the best of both worlds in a new show, Homeground.

Hosted by Minnie Dlamini and Lungile Radu, the live broadcast is a weekly installment of lifestyle entertainment with a dose sports.

The SuperSport-Mzansi Magic co-production which will be simulcast on both channels from 1 May, will give fans sports news, trivia, statistics, and music, with a distinctive touch of lifestyle and fashion. Viewers across the country have been waiting in anticipation for months on the news of Minnie Dlamini’s move to M-Net and SuperSport, and the brands have been tight lipped on the details until now.

 

On what excites her about joining Homeground, Minnie Dlamini stated: “What I’m looking forward to about the show is that it features a variety of sports – not just football. The show also offers a really big entertainment platform, so it’s is breaking down South Africa’s existing segregation between the two worlds.”

 

Touching on what viewers can expect in the brand new production, Sphumelele Sibeko M-Net’s Head of Entertainment stated, “With the help of SuperSport, we’re charting new territory with a live sports production, but we’re mixing it up with the hottest entertainment and afro-glam, which is what our viewers have come to expect from us.”

BASIC LEAD, the organizers of the DISCOP film and television content markets and coproduction forum today unveiled reinforced efforts to firmly establish the annual DISCOP Johannesburg  as the world’s #1 destination to source, acquire, and coproduce entertainment content “Made in Africa.”

 

Organizers are launching a new initiative to put film and televised content from sub-Saharan Africa front and center during DISCOP Johannesburg 2017, taking place from October 25 – 27 at the Sandton Convention Centre. A variety of campaigns will be deployed in the next six months to reach out to international broadcasters, pay-tv operators, streaming services, theatrical distributors, and sales agents seeking diverse and high-quality content.

 

This initiative underscores what has been a long-running commitment by the organizers to both showcase African homegrown content and develop coproduction opportunities across sub-Saharan Africa. With 267 of the 347 production and distribution houses in attendance last year hailing from 36 African countries, DISCOP Johannesburg is already the largest gathering of African content production and distribution executives under one roof.

 

“We proudly declared after DISCOP Johannesburg 2016 that African content is King,” explains Patrick Zuchowicki, CEO of Basic Lead and founder of the DISCOP markets, ” and while African content has long struggled to reach audiences outside the continent, the presence at last year’s DISCOP Johannesburg of some of the major global streamers – the new kids on the buying block – proved that content “Made in Africa” could be a disruptive force. There is an appetite for new projects with universal appeal and competition increases for fresh talent that can travel across all borders.”

 

As African produced content continues to draw the attention of distributors and content aggregators from around the world, thematic hubs will be set-up to showcase content “Made in Africa”, such as the PAVILION FRANCOPHONE AFRICAIN promoting indepentley produced French-speaking content; the DIGILAB AFRICA unbrella to spotlight innovations in virtual reality and 360-degree storytelling,  and the ANIMATION VILLAGE to welcome Africa’s most creative animators.

 

Indeed, DISCOP Johannesburg 2017 will continue with its strong focus on African animation through its continued partnership with the AFRICAN ANIMATION NETWORK who will be hosting the ANIMATION VILLAGE. Fasten your seat belt, check your rear-view mirror, and prepare for a cruise into the heart of Mzansi’s motoring culture. This May, Mzansi Magic wil launch an exciting motoring show, titled Change Down, fuelled by BP, which is revving up to hit the screens every week.

Hosted by comedian Skhumba and Boity Thulo, viewers should gear up for a weekly adventure that will take them across the country, showcasing the flavour of South African motoring, from ekasi to the suburbs, featuring entry level to luxury cars. Renowned South African motoring gurus will also be on-board, to provide expert reviews and insights on the best car for the typical consumer.

 

The show’s also lined up an exciting competition and some great prizes: a pimped up BMW Gusheshe, a brand-new Audi A3, an all-expenses paid holiday, as well as a chance to be on the show and race against your favourite celebrity. Competition details will be available on the BP Southern Africa and the Change Down Facebook pages.

 

The 13-episode motoring lifestyle show will authentically showcase the pros & cons of all types of vehicles, from entry level (starter packs) to luxury cars. Man x Man will premiere exclusively on Netflix from 21 April

Netflix has signed an exclusive international licensing agreement with JTBC, a South Korean nationwide general cable TV and broadcasting company, for the network’s new Friday/Saturday TV series MAN x MAN, premiering on 21 April 2017.

Apart from being a Netflix original series, MAN x MAN is also Netflix’s first simulcast of a Korean drama in over 20 languages to millions of subscribers across the world. Except for Korea and the US, Man x Man will stream globally on Netflix the same time as it premiers on JTBC. In Korea, the series will be live on Netflix an hour after airing on JTBC; and in the U.S., Man x Man will be in two parts, each part comprising eight episodes each.

 

MAN x MAN is a new series directed by producer Chang-min Lee, who worked on popular K-drama series like Giant, Bride of the Sun, Birth of a Beauty, and Remember: War of the Son. The latter was written by Kim Won-seok, who was also recognized for co-writing Descendants of the Sun, one of the most successful K-drama series in 2016. Man x Man stars Park Hae-jin who has been known for roles in acclaimed works including My Love from the Star, Bad Guys, and Cheese in the Trap. The drama tells the story of Kim Seol Woo (played by Park Hae Jin), who becomes a ghost bodyguard for a top hallyu star, the secret “men” who surround him, and their mysterious exploits.

 

The global simulcast of MAN x MAN defines how the internet enables Netflix to put the focus on the consumer to bring a show from Korea to over 93 million subscribers across 190 countries in over 20 languages.

DStv Now app gets better

It’s now even easier for DStv customers to find the best of DStv series, movies and sporting events on the DStv Now app, thanks to a redesigned home screen.

 

The new home screen features recommendation lists, which give customers an immediate overview of the hottest DStv content. A “Must-Watch Movie” section suggests everything from big-name action blockbusters to powerful dramas, and light-hearted comedies. An easier-to-use navigation bar also offers offers a more intuitive interface and instant access to ever-popular SuperSport content.

 

 

 

Login upfront

The introduction of “login upfront” on the DStv Now app also paves the way for greater personalisation of customers’ viewing experience. The login upfront process is simple:

– Existing DStv Now app users who upgrade to the latest version of the app will not have to login to the app again if they were logged in on the previous version.

– Users who were not previously logged in, as well as first time users, need to log in using their DStv Connect ID information when using the updated app for the first time.

– Unless users manually log out, they will not have to login to the app again.

“The changes are aimed at giving our customers faster access to great DStv content and helping them discover new shows, sport and live TV streams,” says Graeme Cumming, head of DStv Digital Media. “DStv Now offers our customers the convenience of watching DStv whenever, wherever – we’re working hard to make it easier for them to find something to watch.”

The Good Life with Ernest Pillay takes to SA screens from Saturday 8th April at 18:30 on SABC 3.

The Good Life is an original series in which radio host, Ernest Pillay, takes the audience on a nostalgic musical journey with some of South Africa’s influential icons.  Ernest and his guest share their music playlist; and one gets to know their personal stories and insight to their good life….

The show is produced by Tung N Cheek Productions; Producer, Writer, and Director – Lizette Khan; acclaimed Actor, Writer, Director – Justin Strydom and Radio 2000 host – Ernest Pillay.
Since his first job at Metro FM in the early 90’s, well known radio consultant and digital media expert, Ernest Pillay, has carved an impressive career in the broadcast industry over the past 25 years. He has also presented TV shows including Studio Mix, Bravo and Midday Breeze.

Guest for the Programme includes:
1. Dr Wally Serote: Renowned South African, anti –Apartheid struggle leader, a poet, playwright, cultural activist, and one of the leading African Renaissance proponents.  Professor Serote is also a celebrated Fulbright literary scholar who continues to contribute tirelessly towards the achievement of the African dream; in South Africa and nationally by participating in various platforms.

2. Jerry Mofokeng:  Is a South African stage and screen actor who has appeared in several critically acclaimed films, including Cry the Beloved Country; Lord of War; Mandela and de Klerk; and the 2005 Academy Award-winning film Tsotsi. Mofokeng attended Orlando West High School and Youth Alive Ministries in Soweto in the 1970s.

3. Robert Marawa:  He is a South African sports journalist, television and radio personality who rose to fame as a ‘Zulu and English’ continuity presenter on SABC 1. He solidified his place and career in the entertainment industry when he moved to sport broadcasting; he previously fronted Topsport’s Laduma and currently hosts Thursday Night Live with Robert Marawa and 083 Sports@6 with Robert Marawa on SABC Radio’s Metro FM.

4. Hugh Masekela: Is a South African trumpeter, flugelhornist, cornetist, composer and singer.  He is the father of American television host Sal Masekela.  He is known for his jazz compilations, as well as for writing well-known anti-apartheid songs such as “Soweto Blues” and “Bring Him Back Home”.

5. Gerry Elsdon (Rantseli): Is a television presenter, host, MC and businesswoman best known for having been continuity announcer for M-Net, and co-hosting the first season of the reality television competition Big Brother South Africa in 2001.

6. Prof Ihron Rensburg:  Is the Vice Chancellor and Principal of the University of Johannesburg, Commissioner of the National Planning Commission, Councilor of the Association of Commonwealth Universities, Chairperson of the Ministerial Committee on Student Accommodation, Member of the Ministerial Committee to review the Funding of Universities, Director of Higher Education South Africa, and Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of READ foundation.

7. Brian Mitchell:  Former professional boxer and quite possibly the best South African boxer of all time.  Mitchell turned pro in 1981 and captured the WBA and Lineal Junior Lightweight Title in 1986 with a 10th-round KO over Alfredo Layne. He defended the title a record 12 times, and never lost a title fight. In 1991 he also captured the IBF Junior Lightweight Title with a decision win over Tony Lopez.

8. Bonang Mohale:  Bonang Mohale is currently the Chairman and Vice President of Shell South Africa Energy Limited, where he is Chairman of the boards of Shell South Africa Holdings Limited, Shell South Africa Energy Limited, Shell South Africa Marketing Limited and Shell South Africa Refinery Limited. He serves on the board of numerous South African companies.

9. Anant Singh:  Anant Singh is recognised as South Africa’s pre-eminent film producer, having produced 65 films since 1984.  He is responsible for many of the greatest anti-apartheid films made in South Africa, including Place of Weeping, Sarafina! and Cry, the Beloved Country.

10. Natalie du Toit:  Natalie du Toit OIG is a South African swimmer. She is best known for the gold medals she won at the 2004 Paralympic Games as well as the Commonwealth Games. She was one of two Paralympians to compete at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing; the other being table tennis player Natalia Partyka. Du Toit became the third amputee ever to qualify for the Olympics, where she placed 16th in the 10K, “Marathon”, swim.

11. RJ Benjamin: Is an award-winning vocalist, songwriter, composer, vocal coach, musical director and producer from Johannesburg, South Africa. Ghetto Ruff owner, Lance Stehr, once described him as “the best composer/singer/musician this country [South Africa] has ever produced”. He graduated from the Allenby Campus School of Contemporary Music in 2000. In those formative years, RJ cemented several professional and personal relationships with fellow Allenby Alumni such as DJ Cleo, Proverb, Elvis Blue and Robin Kohl. Some of his most successful students include winner of Idols SA season 10 Vincent Bones, Vusi Nova, Naaq Musiq and Anatii

12. Thuli Madonsela:  South African advocate and served as the Public Protector of South Africa from 19 October 2009 to 14 October 2016. In 1996, she helped draft the final constitution of South Africa promulgated by then President Nelson Mandela.

13. Jonathan Shapiro:  Is a South African cartoonist, famous as Zapiro, whose work appears in numerous South African publications and has been exhibited internationally on many occasions. He is the nephew of British magician David Berglas and cousin to Marvin Berglas, director of Marvin’s Magic.
