Clash of the Choir is back!

Posted by radio On January - 10 - 2016 ADD COMMENTS

Following a hugely successful second season of Clash of the Choirs, one of Mzansi’s most loved reality shows is back – and it’s bigger and better than you could have ever imagined.

Last year, South Africa chose Team Robbie as the country’s best new amateur choir during a spectacular live finale on July 6th 2014. Team Robbie, representing KwaZulu Natal province, the defending champs, was announced as the winners of Mzansi Magic’s Clash of the Choirs SA 2, beating out Team Shugasmakx, Gauteng province and Team Moneoa, Mpumalanga province in a stunning display of South African musical talent.

This season, we haven’t swayed far from tradition and have banded together the hottest team of choirmasters, to help us unearth the best voices in the land. iFani, Bucie, Busiswa, JR, Kelly Khumalo and Penny Penny and Sfiso Ncwane will go head-to-head for the title that is sure to be fiercely contested.

M-Net Statement: Over the last few months following Unathi’s indiscretions on social media, we have been in discussions with our judges, presenters and talent to sensitise them to the risks of using social media. All the Idols SA judges were reminded that M-Net holds all brand ambassadors and employees to the highest standards in our ongoing efforts to promote and build a modern and inclusive South Africa.

Unfortunately we then had to deal with Somizi’s inappropriate comments and following the latest issue, we have now implemented a zero tolerance policy for all social media posts that go against the spirit of nation-building. This policy will apply to everyone associated with our brands going forward.

We do not believe that Gareth is a racist but his response showed a lack of empathy for our history and it is important to differentiate between freedom of speech and hate speech. Penny Sparrow’s comments were hateful. Hate speech is not applicable with regard to freedom of speech .

Saints And Sinners Returns For Season 2

Posted by radio On December - 22 - 2015 ADD COMMENTS

Are you a Saint or a Sinner? That’s the question at the heart of the multi-generational Mzansi Magic drama, SAINTS AND SINNERS. The channel has now announced that the Khumalos and Moloiswas will return to DStv channel 161 on Sunday, 10 January at 8PM.

The 13-part first season launched to great acclaim last year and its memorable moments included the tragic death of a young character whose demise devastated his loved ones, fracturing a once solid marriage. The action escalated and culminated in a gripping cliff-hanger finale that saw leading lady Phindi being kidnapped. Season two, will pick up the story from this suspense and the damaging consequences that this dark act has had on the lives of so many characters.

Included in the new season will be the sensational rediscovery of a long-lost father, whilst a domineering matriarch finds herself at odds with her shattered family. Along the way the contrasting elements of revenge and forgiveness, destruction and redemption, greed and sacrifice, trust and betrayal all simmer under the surface, in line with the new series tagline: ‘A Second Season Grounded in Truths’.

In confirming the second season of SAINTS AND SINNERS, M-Net Director of Local Entertainment Channels, Nkateko Mabaso, highlighted the appeal that well-produced drama holds for Mzansi Magic viewers, “Our audiences have demonstrated that they will continue to engage with dramatic storylines if these are well scripted and well executed, simultaneously relevant and escapist, and populated with characters who are highly believable. These were the key ingredients in the success of last season and it is what will continue to fuel the viewership in season two.”

He goes on to say, “Mzansi Magic is not just focused on launching exciting new shows but also on growing those proven properties that have delivered great value for viewing audiences. We are also pleased that we have been able to bring back the same stellar cast and are delighted with their commitment to the series.”

The cast of the series remains unchanged and includes the talents of: Thuso Mbedo (Boni Khumalo), Nthathi Moshesh (Mamohato Khumalo), S’dumo Mtshali (Ndumiso Khumalo), Tumiso Masha (Gibson Mosia), Siyabonga Radeba (Phakamani Makhoba) and Sibulele Gcilitshana (Lulama Moloiswa). SAINTS AND SINNERS is produced for Mzansi Magic by Penguin Films

This December, Mzansi Magic (DStv channel 161) will be screening two Original Films created exclusively for the channel by M-Net’s 2015 Magic in Motion Academy Interns.

Twelve top graduates who’ve been part of a year-long work acceleration program and experienced some of South Africa’s biggest productions faced their toughest test when M-Net challenged them to create two of their very own films for broadcast! The results was a creation of the drama Ilizwi which will debut on December 12 at 19:30 and the romantic comedy The Ring which premieres on December 19 at 19:30.

Both 60-minute movies were conceived, written, produced and directed by the Magic in Motion Academy’s Class of 2015 – Alice Mataboge, Aluta Qupa, Ignatius Shongwe, Kabelo Ramputa, Lele Dinte, Mark Madai, Mbali Zulu, Palesa Rathebe, Sivela Mgudu, Themba Mfebe, Themba Twala and Yalezo Njuguna.

“We’re delighted that the interns were able to successfully deliver two movies and are in the process of making two more. Their tenacity and talent will no doubt see them make a lasting contribution to the local film and TV industry. At M-Net, the transformation of our sector and empowerment of new storytellers are key objectives and they drive the Magic in Motion Academy.” says, Yolisa Phahle, CEO at M-Net.

Starring Nhlanhla John Lata, Sli Nodangala, Cebile Mlaba and Sihle Dlamini, Ilizwi tells the story of Siboniso, who moves to Joburg with his Mother, Nomzamo to live with his uncle, Mandla after the passing of his father. But trouble comes knocking when Mandla’s wife Agnes discovers that years before they married, Mandla and Nomzamo were a couple. As the family tries to cope with the changes, Mandla gives Sibo a bracelet that belonged to his dead grandmother. Soon the power of the bracelet is felt when Sibo begins to hear the secret thoughts of others. Now as he discovers just who he is, Agnes tries to rid herself of both the boy and his mother.

The film, The Ring, is a hilarious comedy starring Kenneth Nkosi, MacMillian Leshomo, Sivenathi Mabuya, Sana Mchunu, Cedric Fourie and Ntando Mncube.

The story is centred on hotel clerk Thami, who has been dating Mpumi for three years. Her parents, Josephine and Vuyani, disapprove of their relationship believing that Thami isn’t good enough for their daughter. Things get interesting when Mpumi’s rich ex-boyfriend, Clinton, comes back to town and charms Josephine and Vuyani into helping him reunite with Mpumi. Feeling threatened, Thami decides to propose to Mpumi but he can’t afford a glamorous ring. Then, while cleaning a hotel room, Thami finds a beautiful ring and he quickly proposes without realizing who the ring belongs to.

Cassper Nyovest revealed as SA’s hottest MC

Posted by radio On November - 27 - 2015 ADD COMMENTS

Almost a month to the day that Cassper Nyovest rewrote history with his “Fill Up The Dome” concert, MTV Base (DStv channel 322), has revealed him as the laureate in “SA’s Hottest MC 2015”.

The heavily contested top five saw Nyovest push both rivals and friends to the back of the list, scoring top marks for impact, sales, buzz and other intangibles. Commended by the judges for his sound decision making skills and relentless hard work, there was little disagreement that Cassper deserved the top spot.

Hot on his heels is AKA, who the panel unanimously agreed deserved the second spot with his well thought-out music taking centre stage. His accomplishments outside the studio were arguably not as strong as Cassper’s. Style and lyrics were the two outstanding criteria that scored him the runner up spot.

2014’s number one MC, KO, took the third spot; his strong presence and contribution to the local hip hop scene was commended by the panel, but the extent of his impact in 2015 was interrogated.

MTV Africa Music Award 2015 winner for “Best Music Video” for “Nafukwa”, Riky Rick scored the fourth spot after a hard-hitting 2015 with the release of his debut album “Family Values”, that has earned him multiple award nominations while selling over 20,000 copies.

OkMalumKoolKat took the number 5 slot with his hard-to-box rap style.  While his work, dedication and influence on SA Hip Hop culture throughout 2014/2015 has been louder than his fame, features with Riky Rick,Cassper Nyovest and WTF, and sheer consistency had the panel wide open.

SA’s Hottest MCs 2015” top 5 countdown premiered on MTV Base (DStv Channel 322) on Friday 27 November at 16:30 CAT.

To see the full countdown, tune in to the 1 hour special featuring Part 1 and Part 2 on Saturday 28 November at 11″00 CAT as part of the “Hottest Mcs Takeover Weekend” on MTV Base.

ATFT & South Africa Impress at American Film Market

Posted by radio On November - 20 - 2015 ADD COMMENTS

The American Film Market (AFM) took place in Santa Monica California recently, from November 4th to 11th and South Africa was well represented by South African Indies and it’s partners the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and the Gauteng Film Commission (GFC).

The AFM is one of the largest film markets and conferences in the world with the 2015 edition seeing over 2,200 new films being presented to potential distributors from the USA and across the globe.

The ATFT attended the event with one its best delegations to date, consisting of 16 of South Africa’s most exciting emerging filmmakers.  Over the 7 days South Africa was represented by a country stand on the main exhibition floor and a formal meeting room where a number of networking and promotional events took place.

The theme for stand SA this year was “Come Shoot in South Africa,” with the Dti, the Gauteng Film Commission and SA Indies promoting South Africa as an ideal filming location due its favourable economic conditions, competitive rebates, ability to service blockbuster Hollywood films, and the multiple opportunities for co-productions.

Co-production was also the topic of a very well attended panel discussion hosted by South African Indies, African Co-productions; The Possiblities and the Challenges. The panel included Delon Bakker from Mannequin, Jon Volmink from Diprente, Pascal Schmitz from AAA Entertainment, and was moderated by Mayenzeke Baza from SA Indies.

The main event for South African attendees was the networking reception on November 7th hosted by the GFC & Hoplight Entertainment – an LA based production company – who has hosted the reception for three years running.

A range of Hollywood celebs and high-powered industry players attended the event including So You Think You Can Dance producer – James Gutierrez, Wrap Kings producer Tank Menzies, producer / director Rob Margolies, Emmy Award winning actor, Kiko Ellsworth, South African Faith Like Potatoes actor Frank Rautenbach who is now based in Hollywood, Iris TV CEO Filed Garthwaite and Lions Gate’s Kai Wai Ho.  The event was an informal yet important opportunity to network and discuss existing film projects and the future for collaboration and co-productions.

Hoplite Films explains why they continue to host this event and support South African Indies:

“Hoplite has been cultivating a relationship with South African Indies, for a few years now, with the intention of bringing and developing projects alongside South African producers.  We currently have 2 separate narrative series, 2 films, and 3 unscripted TV series we are looking to bring into the region.  As with all of our relationships, we try to cultivate and foster expression through constant communication.  As your market continues to grow and emerge, we are happy to come along side you and help you grow.  We have come to know both Pascal and Mayenzeke and have seen first hand their passion spread through various markets while they promote their country.”

Overall the news for South African filmmakers at AFM was good, with Jonathan Wolf, the AFM Director explaining the current trends within global film production and distribution.  According to Wolf, the gap is widening between high budget films and  lower-budget indie films with the middle ground disappearing. This means that internationally, the ideal production budget is $1 million and below for indie films, and for high budget indie films with known cast above $20 million. Films within these two categories are the most successful at securing distribution deals, with films in the $3 – 20 million range struggling to do so.

Pascal Schmitz from AAA Entertainment explains why this is good for SA films, “most top productions coming out of South Africa are in the ideal  budget range  of approximately 1 million USD. With an average of only 25% of films presented at market securing distribution, production budgets are an important determining factor that stand in our favour.“

An example of  the South African films presented at AFM is Pop, Lock n Roll, a top-notch hip-hop dance film currently in production. The film garnered significant interest at AFM with a subsidiary of Lion’s Gate distribution interested in first –sight of the finished product.  AAA Entertainment is confident that this film will secure international distribution upon completion in 2016.

Overall the American Film Market 2016 provided significant promotional and business opportunities for the rapidly expanding South African film industry.
