Naspers interim results show solid growth

Posted by radio On December - 2 - 2014 ADD COMMENTS

Naspers last week announced its financial results for the six months to 30 September 2014. Revenues measured on an economic interest basis, including the proportionate contribution from associates and joint ventures, expanded 30% year on year (YoY). With the group’s ecommerce and internet businesses growing ahead of pay-television and print, 72% of group revenues are now earned offshore.

Naspers[1]

Core headline earnings grew 24% to R6,1bn, despite expensing R4,4bn in the continued development of the group’s ecommerce and pay-television platforms. “We are pleased with our progress to date,” said Naspers chair Ton Vosloo. “Execution capacity and operations are strengthening throughout the group and the focus is on customer satisfaction, engagement and retention.”

Boosted by accelerating revenue growth in many etail businesses, internet remained the fastest-growing segment and accounted for 58% of total group revenues. ”We are seeing meaningful increases in organic traffic in our markets as we deliver compelling customer propositions and scale our platforms,” said CEO Bob van Dijk. Organic growth resulted in Naspers’s ecommerce revenues increasing 43% YoY to R12,1bn. This segment reported a trading loss of R2,4bn after incurring development spend of R3,6bn.

The group’s classifieds efforts are focused on about 40 countries globally and after recent brand migrations, the majority of classifieds sites now operate under the OLX banner. Naspers recently strengthened its position in this segment through an agreement with Schibsted to jointly develop select markets in Latin America and South East Asia, subject to EU approval. Competition remains aggressive, but the group has outgrown its competitors on the measures that matter most, particularly in mobile.

Pay TV

In pay-television, solid subscriber growth of 342 000 households drove revenues up 18% to R20,2bn. The business covers 50 countries on the African continent and provides services to over 8,4m homes. Trading profit increased 11% to R5bn, after expensing R642m of investment in DTT and online video initiatives. The personal video recorder (PVR) base expanded to 1,2m subscribers and customers are now renting some 600 000 movies per month on BoxOffice, a service that will soon be expanded into sub-Saharan Africa. Analogue switch-offs, once implemented, should provide future momentum for subscriber growth on the DTT platform.

The print media segment continues to face tough trading conditions and structural changes to the industry. Overall revenues grew slightly, but margins contracted further due to accelerated investments in digital solutions and new growth areas to diversify the revenue base.

Naspers’s share of core headline earnings from associates, including Tencent in China and Mail.ru Group in Russia, increased by 43% to R6,4bn. This was mainly due to continued strong performance by Tencent, including benefits from its transaction with JD.com.

“The second half of the year is traditionally the most active part of the year for most of our businesses. We expect some pick-up in spend as we capitalise on the holiday season, which could result in lower core headline earnings for that period,” cautioned CFO, Basil Sgourdos. “Our goal remains to develop online classifieds, etail and DTT to deliver future growth and create value over time,” he added.

Generations – The Legacy’s return to the screen

Posted by radio On December - 1 - 2014 ADD COMMENTS

It was a single decision that shook the television world and left Mzansi’s viewers speechless! The announcement was made in September of 2014 that the hugely popular soapie, Generations, will be off air for 2 solid months! But now the countdown is reaching fever pitch as viewers look forward in great anticipation to the celebrated return of, Generations–The Legacy, come Monday 1 December 2014 in the usual timeslot at 20h00.

“Generations The Legacy, is about stimulating a conversation on the transfer of wealth, knowledge and culture. Successive generations in African society have produced men and women of great intelligence, vision and the drive for excellence. For a variety of reasons -some no doubt related to our painful past, our development as a people has been stymied.

Generations The Legacy in its own way will address this issue -not in a didactic manner but in interesting narratives.  Now is the time to establish family legacies that move our country forward,” says both elated and relieved creator, Mfundi Vundla.

Generations-The-Legacy-Karabo&Tau465

Generations–The Legacy picks the drama’s rich narration 2 years into the future, Karabo Moroka (played by the revered Connie Ferguson) and Tau Mogale (played by the accomplished Rapulana Seiphemo), two iconic figures in Generations re-enter the cut-throat media business landscape.

This power couple is out to establish the legacy of Paul Moroka, the business visionary who built the first African-owned media enterprise. Unknown to Karabo, her husband Tau runs a parallel mission of establishing a legacy of his own. Deviousness has no boundaries: Tau’s sister Tshidi (Letoya Makhene), a trophy wife of the gangster, Gaddaffi (Vuyo Dabula) – Tau’s arch enemy, colludes albeit nervously in her husband’s efforts to derail the Paul Moroka legacy. Generations-The Legacy is a witch’s brew of narratives of ambition.  A drama set in a world where virtue and evil are in a stellar battle for supremacy.

The new and exciting cast includes the following interesting faces and roles: JT Medupi as Jonathan; Musa Ngema as Mazwi; Kopano Zimba as Mary; Manaka Ranaka as Lucy; Andisiwe Dweba plays the role of Getty; Lebogang Mthunzi as Angela; Moopi Mothibedi as Smanga; Thulisile Phongolo plays the character Namhla; Ronnie Nyakale plays Cosmo; Asanda Foji plays Simphiwe and Ivy Nkutha plays the role of Gog’Flo.

“The absence of Generations on SABC1’s schedule for the past two months was unfortunate and we would once again like to apologize to our viewers for the turn of events that led to the show taking a break,” says SABC1 Channel Head, Maijang Mpherwane. “It’s also important to thank our viewers for the patience and support during the past two months when Generations was off air.

We are excited to share the new series with them and we are confident that it will live up to their expectations. The series has a compelling storyline, top cast and world class performances that is bound to captivate viewers for many episodes and years to come, furthermore entrenching channel’s positioning as Mzansi’s official story teller.”

“From the 1st December 2014, Skeem Saam returns to the weekday 18h30 slot after performing beyond expectations on the weekday 20h00 slot. This further proves the relevance of the diverse stories told on SABC1, to a mass audience that continues to respond well to the channel. As communicated from the onset, this was always a temporary arrangement which would see channel reverting back to normal schedule upon the return of Generations: The Legacy and so we are confident that Skeem Saam will continue to do well for the channel on the weekday 18h30 slot,” he concludes.

With parties and get-togethers being the order-of-the-day, Vinny will be offering up a head-spinning music mix each Saturday that’s perfectly brewed for summertime.

The iconic mixmaster won’t be alone in bringing the party into South African homes: each week Vinny’s House will feature a special guest star to keep the beats rolling. Among those destined to step into Vinny’s House are DJ Ganyani, Tim White, Ralf Gum, Julian Gomez, Christos and Mbuso – in short, the who’s who of Mzansi House music, both legends and newcomers!

We intend to take viewers on an exciting ride where they will have access to exclusive Deep House song selections,” says Nkateko Mabaso, Director of Local Interest Channels at M-Net.

Vinny himself needs no introduction to devoted House music fans. He is considered one of the most established figures on the South African dance music scene and has galvanised deep club culture over two decades. His influence has not just been as a DJ – although he’s revered by fans and peers for his ability on the ones and twos, a skill that was honed in the 1990s. Vinny is also one of the original music entrepreneurs. Through his partnership in the House Afrika empire, Vinny has overseen many top-selling compilations, including the House Afrika: Deep House Sounds and Africanism series, all of which he compiled and mixed.

As a producer he’s broken ground with the DJs At Work project alongside longtime friend, DJ Christos. Together they have released five critically acclaimed, platinum-selling studio albums and a slew of top-notch deejay mixes.

Summer will never be the same again!

Ndoni Khanyile gets innovative

Posted by radio On November - 14 - 2014 ADD COMMENTS

South African Ndoni Khanyile is set to appear on over 270 million TV screens in more than 140 countries this November, when she makes her debut on Al Jazeera English as the presenter of Innovate Africa.

The new six-part series travels across Africa to meet the entrepreneurs and innovators who are using technology to change their lives and the futures of those around them.

Ndoni1

Produced from Cape Town, Innovate Africa has already taken Ndoni to France, Ghana, Kenya, and Rwanda. She’s met children learning to build robots in Ghana from age five, as well as children in Kenya learning to code from age six. She’s learnt about advances in space satellite technology; discovered 3D printers made from recycled waste; and watched students learn in solar-powered classrooms. She visited multi-million dollar projects like the World Agroforesty Centre in Nairobi, where they’re sequencing the genomes of traditional African food crops, as well as students working to support their communities on a very small scale, with almost no money at all.

“The internet is a really democratic medium,” says Ndoni, who presents the show with well-known radio personality Tapfuma Makina, who is also a Biotechnology graduate. “Because of the access the web gives you, whether you are a student or a multinational, anyone with an idea can have an impact. Africa Innovates isn’t just about the tech; it’s about the innovative thinking that uses technology as a tool for problem-solving on a young continent that is on the move.”

Ndoni will be familiar to African viewers as the host of eNCA’s premier technology show Tech Report from 2011 to 2013. She also starred in films like Skeem and Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom; and alongside John Kani in the Sean Mathias play Antigone, among other roles.

Ndoni studied Theatre and Performance at the University of Cape Town, before receiving a Masters degree in Broadcast Journalism from Columbia University, which she attended as the recipient of a Fulbright Scholarship and the William and Ceil Africa Pulitzer Fellowship.

As a founding member of the poetry performance group Rite 2 Speak, Ndoni has performed original music and poetry in London, Switzerland and Portugal. She’s also a columnist and editor-at-large for Essence of Africa, a new women’s magazine that launches in November 2014.

Innovate Africa premieres on Al Jazeera English on Tuesday, 18 November 2014 at 22:30 CAT.
