Short&Sweet and Springfield Convent High School are proud to present the SA Teen Film Fest, the first annual short film competition of its kind in South Africa. The launch event will take place at Springfield Convent High School in Wynberg, Cape Town on the 24 June 2015. Open to high school students across the nation, the SA Teen Film Fest aims to inspire the filmmakers of tomorrow by encouraging creative thought now.

 

Teen Mascot (Meet)The SA Teen Film Fest began as an internal short film competition at Springfield in 2010. Learners in Grade 10 were required to produce a two minute short film that interpreted a published poem. Three years later, Bronwyn Wylie and Nicolette Going invited learners from other high schools to participate. The inter-schools competition, then called Focus Festival, ran for two years.

 

Now, the SA Teen Film Fest is a partnership between Short&Sweet and Springfield, working together towards an all-inclusive, national-level participatory event. There are three categories for students to enter into:

Poetry Film – Grade 10;

Public Service Announcement – Grade 11;

Open – Grade 8 – Matric

 

A team of up to six learners can enter a short film.

 

Submissions close 2 September 2015 and short films can be submitted online or physically to Springfield Convent. Entry is free and open to all high school students. The awards evening will take place on the 23 September and prizes will be awarded to learners who stand out in various categories as well as the top short films in each category.

Zola back on TV with UTatakho

Genetic discovery and the search for identity are the twin themes at the heart of the brand new docu-reality series Utatakho which debuts on Mzansi Magic (DStv channel 161) on Tuesday, July 7 at 19:30.  

 

Zola_lrgDestined to be emotional viewing, the 13 part series is focused on resolving issues of paternity using DNA testing, allowing the individuals involved the opportunity to answer questions of parentage that they have been unable to answer before.

 

Hosted by South African musician, poet, actor and presenter Bonginkosi Dlamini ‘Zola’ who takes on the roles of mediator and investigator. Utatakho is centered on bringing resolution and understanding to the difficult topic of absent fathers. Using in-depth interviews, the series will explore the motivations, doubts and hopes of the three most central persons in each episode – father, mother, child.

 

 

Whether it’s a father who refuses to acknowledge his child; a mother who wants to prove her child’s father is the man she has named; or even an adult simply wanting to know who their dad is; Utatakho will try to help. From meeting each of the people involved and hearing their story, to facilitating a DNA test, and on to delivering the final results with the help of a counselling psychologist, in each 30-minute episode the show will strive to encourage union, dialogue and a positive way forward in each case that it spotlights.

 

 

Produced for Mzansi Magic by Connect tv, the series highlights a prominent social issue that affects many across this country, and is expected to resonate with audiences who can identify with its sensitive yet familiar subject matter. It is important to note that the series was not designed to deal with the topics of maintenance and fiscal arrangements for child rearing, but more to give closure to those who simply want to know how and if they are related to each other.

 

 

Commenting on the series, kwaito legend Zola (Bonginkosi Dlamini) says, “I really wanted to be involved in this particular program because it tackles a subject that is very relevant to many South Africans, and very close to my own heart. I want people to see that they can engage, that there can be a powerful positive outcome to years of questions, that using a combination of science and respect, we can have meaningful conversations about paternity, family, future. I think audiences will be inspired and moved by the stories that are told on this show.”

M-Net Family to launch in July

M-Net and MultiChoice are redesigning channel 162 on DStv to become a general entertainment channel for the entire family. On Wednesday, 1 July from 17:00 the current MagicWorld will make way for the aptly titled M-Net Family. This revamped channel will speak to the viewing needs of South African customers who subscribe to the DStv Family offering, but will also be available on DStv Premium, Extra and Compact.

 

M-Net-Family-Feature-921x526M-Net Family will be packed with a variety of high quality international content – from drama and reality series to movies – while some hit local shows and a kiddies programming block will also form part of the great family buffet of entertainment.

On weekdays at 15:30 it’s soapie time on M-Net Family with The Wild, M-Net’s multiple award-winning epic set on a game farm. That will be followed by the topical discussions of The Talk, at 16:00, and the telenovela Champs at 17:00.

 

At 18:00 viewers can chuckle away a stressful day with the romantic comedy Manhattan Love Story and at 18:30 young and old can savour the delicious dishes that are whipped up in MasterChef Junior USA. Then, after the little ones have been tucked in, grown-ups can stay put for variety of reality and drama shows that start at 19:30. Among these are America’s Got Talent, Nashville, The Have and Have Nots, Marvel’s Agent of Shield, Night Shift and Red Band Society.

 

On Saturdays and Sundays there will be a family movie at 18:00 as well as series omnibuses throughout the day.

 

Koowee will keep toddlers happy, playing and cheering from 7:00 to 08:00 each morning on weekdays and 6:00 to 8:00 on Saturdays, as well as on weekday afternoons for a half an hour from 15:00 to 15:30.

iBiskop Launches at Cannes

AAA Entertainment recently attended the prestigious Cannes Film Festival where it launched its digital transactional-video-on-demand (TVOD) platform, iBiskop to the global film market. As the first South African feature films sales agency to attend Cannes, AAA was there to sell some of Africa’s top quality feature films as well to aggregate content for their platform iBiskop.

 

bioskopWhilst there are numerous video on demand platforms springing up around Africa,  iBiskop is unique in that is has been purposefully developed to address the three major  challenges of the African media consumer environment.

 

AAA Entertainment Director Pascal Schmitz explains further, “there are three main reasons that most of the nearly one hundred video-on-demand platforms launched across Africa are failing to gain traction. iBiskop has developed solutions for all of these factors and has already started rolling them out for the South African market specifically.”

 

Schmitz goes on to elaborate on these reasons, the first being the exorbitant cost of data, still well out of reach of most consumers. “There are millions of South Africans who would love to access film content on their mobile phones but simply cannot afford to do so because of the data costs,” he explains.  Ibiskop has partnered with GO!planet to address this issue by providing free wifi at twenty high density commuter locations, such as major taxi ranks, across the country. These wifi hot spots will be rolled out to almost all commuter locations throughout the year. Free wifi means no data costs and easy downloads for all.

 

The second issue for VOD platforms is that of payment, as most sites accept payment only via credit or debit card. South Africa, and indeed Africa as a whole, has very low penetration of credit card use, effectively shutting out millions of potential consumers. iBiskop has therefore partnered with OTT, a pre-paid voucher service, making it possible for anyone with cash to make a purchase on the platform.

 

These pre-paid vouchers can be purchased through pre-paid vendors in commuter centres, as well as a variety of retailers, such as Glocell, Caltex Fresh Stop and Fashionworld stores with many new retail outlets coming online soon. With these vouchers, purchasing via iBiskop is possible without a credit card or even a bank account.

 

Lastly, iBiskop has addressed the pricing issue that makes pirates DVDs an attractive alternative to consumers, making feature length films available for $1 or R10 per film and shorts for $0,40c or R4. This cost is for a download to own as opposed to a streaming or rental model, much like a DVD. For R10 people can own a film on their phone or tablet and view it as many times as they wish, similarly to iTunes and other such platforms.

 

When presented with this innovative retail platform at Cannes, many international film agencies have agreed to license their content to the iBiskop platform. AAA Entertainment is the exclusive aggregator for all South African film content on the platform and interested filmmakers are urged to contact them for more information.

ATV Open Day: 13 June 2015

The Academy of Television & Screen Arts is holding its Open Day in two weeks time.

 

Open Days are for prospective students interested in enrolling for the Higher Certificate or Diploma in Television and Screen Media, for studies in 2016.

After the presentation the students and their families will be taken on a tour of the ASE facilities in SABC Radio Park and will then be given the opportunity to have an application interview or to schedule an application interview for the following week.

The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC), celebrated Africa Month,  by extending the services of its 24-Hour News Channel, which is broadcast on the DStv platform on channel 404 into the rest of the continent.

The channel was previously broadcast only in the SADC region and with this expansion it will enable 50 African countries to have access to the SABC’s 24-Hour News channel. The channel will feature a mixture of local and continental news stories to appeal to the wide range of audience which the channel will be serving.

 

The 24-Hour News channel was launched in August 2013, and over the past 18 months has made great strides in becoming a premier source of news and information for the SADC region. Broadcasting highlights thus far, include the coverage of the successful elections in Zambia, Lesotho and Nigeria, as well as the SADC Special Summit in Zimbabwe and the Pan African Parliament held in Johannesburg last week.

 

Mr. Hlaudi Motsoeneng, the Corporation’s Chief Operations Officer (COO) stated: “This development will assist the SABC in championing the voice of the continent, by telling African stories from an African perspective. It will also create a platform for South Africans to interact with their fellow African counterparts, by celebrating the continent’s achievements, showcasing opportunities and addressing challenges”.

 

He further said that: “With the country having recently experienced Xenophobia, as a public service broadcaster our role in dealing with this matter is to further expose our South African citizens to the lives of their fellow Africans as we are one. The extension of this news service will go a long way in fulfilling that objective and reinforcing Africa’s unity, commitment to peace, democracy and economic development”.

Body art goes mainstream in Skin Wars, the hot new reality show debuting on Sony Max (DStv Channel 128) on Friday May 22 at 21h30.

 

SSW_9157_aThe host is international supermodel and actress Rebecca Romijn who knows her way around a jar of body paint as she was the first model to be body-painted for Sports Illustrated’s swimsuit issue in the year before she made her big-screen debut as the blue body painted Mystique in the hit film X-Men.

The gripping eight-part Skin Wars pits 10 talented and versatile body painters against each other for a $100 000 grand prize in a series of challenges that promise amazing reveals.

Romijn says viewers should get used to their eyes being tricked: “The camouflage challenges were my personal favourite and the level of art was fantastic. And then it’s time to wash off your canvas…”

 

Entertainer and drag artist RuPaul joins body painting rock stars Craig Tracy and Robin Slonina as judges, with one contestant eliminated every episode.

There are regular guest judges including Carson Kressley, the fashion expert on the TV hit Queer Eye for the Straight Guy. Another guest is Wonder Woman Lynda Carter who comes in to judge after a superhero challenge.

Some of the contestants are as colourful as the art they produce. They come from various backgrounds including tattoo, comic books and freehand (one even paints vehicles) and brilliantly use their talent to turn the body’s blank canvas into works of art.

 

Each week, contestants are given a particular theme and collateral. Once the clock starts ticking, contestants need to battle it out for the best body-painting design of the day, which guarantees the contestants a step closer to the ultimate grand prize.

 

Says Romijn: “I love body art and have plenty of experience in the subject. X-Men was a nine-hour make-up job with another two hours needed to take it off! The amazing thing about being painted is that once you’re completely painted you don’t feel nude. Look at my shoot for Sports Illustrated and you are fooled into believing that I am wearing a costume. Skin painting could overtake tattooing. With skin painting you can shower it off. With tattooing you are stuck.”

 

 

South African model and actress Jay Anstey decided to pay homage to both Romijn’s sultry Sports Illustrated shoot and Sony Max’s Skin Wars by recreating Rebecca’s famous cover shot. It may have taken six hours to complete but Anstey was thrilled with the end result courtesy of local artists Airvolution: “It was inspirational watching incredible artists work to transform my bare skin into beautiful body art.”

The time has finally come for lovers of SA music to book their seats for the highly anticipated rock comedy – Stone Cold Jane Austen – The Movie.

The full length feature film, due for public release on the 22nd May 2015, is an hilarious reality-styled comedy that pushes boundaries in the entertainment world whilst taking the viewer on a journey into the lives of two loveable, yet delusional rogues, Johnny and Karel – the main members of the band Stone Cold Jane Austen.

 

With an all-star cast of SA celebs, Stone Cold Jane Austen – The Movie is without a doubt one of the funniest theatrical releases of 2015.

 

Jon Savage, writer, director and actor in the role of Johnny Van Heroine, has spent the past three years sourcing funding and convincing SA celebs to help him create this ridiculously funny, yet strangely real look at the life of a highly delusional band in the SA rock scene.

 

Starring acclaimed actor Rob Van Vuuren as Jon Savage’s partner in crime, the two main characters, Johnny and Karel set out on a journey of humiliation, aggressive self promotion and epic downfalls in their musical careers.

 

The film tackles how hard it is to achieve stardom in the SA rock music scene and shows the lengths one band will go to in order to achieve respect and recognition for their wares.  Although essentially a black comedy, the film tells the story of a musician who has never given up on his dream, despite it being utterly unrealistic – and is unaffected by the lows he needs to stoop to in order to achieve it.  So much so that he is convinced being an Afrikaans band will help him get famous, despite not being able to speak Afrikaans.

 

Jon Savage, the once lead singer of rock band Cassette, sees an amplified version of himself in the main character Johnny Van Heroine, “I remember what it was like to be a complete egomaniac in a semi-successful rock band in SA only too clearly”, he states, “We had a hugely disappointing reality check at the end of it all.”

 

But as a director and writer, Jon has found a niche for himself in a highly competitive creative world.  Having single handedly created this movie from scratch, the amount of stars that were willing to get on board is unbelievable.  High-powered musicians, TV presenters and media all participated in the opportunity to poke light-hearted fun at themselves and the industry and bring this movie to light.

 

Some of the artists that starred in the movie include Fokofpolisiekar, Jack Parow, Kurt Darren, Die Hewels Fantasties, The Parlotones, aKing and many more.  “Everyone was amazing”, Savage recalls.  “They all brought their own set of challenges and gave so generously to the movie.”

 

Beautifully shot and edited, Stone Cold Jane Austen is a movie that any South African can relate to – more so if they have tried their hand at making it in the music industry.  The film brings the bands tragic reality to light with one of the wittiest and most risky scripts ever seen in a South African comedy.

Through relentless fund raising and diligent hard work, Savage has brought his own dream to the silver screen – a must see for music and comedy fans alike.

 

Stone Cold Jane Austen opens in Nu Metro cinemas on the 22nd May 2015.

ITV Choice coming to DStv

ITV Choice will launch across Africa for the first time following a deal between ITV Studios Global Entertainment and African pay-TV operator MultiChoice. The commercial channel will launch exclusively on DStv across the continent as the home of great British entertainment and drama.

ITV Choice has a packed schedule lined up for its launch on DStv on Tuesday, 5 May 2015. Entertainment highlights include ITV Studios’ award-winning primetime entertainment series Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway; family entertainment shows Big Star’s Little Star from 12 Yard and Keep It In The Family from ITV Studios and Over The Top Productions, celebrities mastering variety acts in ITV Studios’ Get Your Act Together and 12 Yard’s Eggheads and Coach Trip.

 

The drama offering features brand new titles such as Poldark, the period drama adaptation of the classic novels produced by Mammoth Screen; Arthur & George, Buffalo Pictures’ adaptation of Julian Barnes’ novel about the life of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, played by Martin Clunes and ITV Studios’ World War II drama Home Fires. It also features detective series Vera and Murdoch Mysteries and Britain’s best-loved soaps, Coronation Street and Emmerdale. All programming will air very close to UK transmission dates, with the soaps airing within 48 hours of the UK.

 

ITV Choice will be exclusively available to DStv Premium customers on DStv channel 123, across the African continent. The launch means that ITV Choice will now be available in over 100 countries across the Middle East, Asia and Africa.
