BET Buzz to launch in September

For what’s what, who’s who and who’s doing what to whom, you just have to check out BET Buzz, BET’s smart and sassy new daily entertainment show.

Presenting a daily dose of entertainment news are veteran Tamarsha Khanyile and relative newcomer Altovise Lawrence, who will take turns hosting the show.

Singer and radio DJ Tamarsha has previously made her mark presenting on Selimathunzi and covering the Metro FM Awards Black Carpet show on behalf of RGB, while Altovise first rose to fame after winning BET’s reality contest Top Actor earlier this year.

 

Bright, breezy and in the know, BET Buzz will feature entertainment news and celebrity gossip from all over the African continent and the rest of the world.

 

Added Tamarsha, “I’m so excited to be part of this exciting new show for BET, and to being able to grow my profile within the entertainment industry.”

#YouGotGot is coming to MTV on 17 August!

Tol A$$ Mo and his posse of Outlawz are heading back into town for their most outrageous and hilarious exploits yet: to prank the good, honest, law-abidin’ citizens of South Africa…#YouGotGot…there’s no escape…

Inspired by the funniest pranks on the #internet, and in the proud tradition of MTV prank shows Punk’d and Pranked, #YouGotGot is a straight-shootin’ prank show with a SA spin, foolin’ members of the public and famous faces to do real stupid stuff, or at least scarin’ the pants off them – all in the name of good ol’ entertainment!

 

Initially devised as a once-off stunt for April Fools’ Day earlier this year, #YouGotGot made such a commotion that MTV is bringing it back as a fully-fledged weekly show. Each week there’ll be a celebrity prankee; stars already subjected to the #YouGotGot treatment include Bonang Matheba and Bucie (episode 1) and Da LES (episode 2).

 

Dillon Khan, Channel Head – MTV, said “Millions of people spend thousands of hours on the internet looking at cats, people falling off things, other random stuff, and more cats. So we dug about to find some interesting social experiments, representing the best and the worst pranks the internet has to offer, before trying them out on willing South Africans. Well, actually, they weren’t willing at all: it’s a prank show! In fact, we did it just so we could have the pleasure of seeing their reaction when we finally shouted #YOUGOTGOT in their faces.

Meet The Outlaws!

The wily gang of pranksters is led by comedian Tol A$$ Mo (identifying feature: he’s real tall…), who supplies the jokes and voiceovers, while five trusty henchmen and women pull all the pranks and stunts.

 

Lindzy: The black widow of pranks. What Lindzy gives with one hand, she takes away with of the other. This crafty vixen will use her cunning and sly ways to trick you in the best way.

Oscar: Mini man, our “Napoleon” of pranks. He likes getting down and dirty (not that it’s a long way down or anything). Like a pocket Swiss Army knife, this little guy comes with a big warning label. He can “move like Jagger”, and hide in your fridge – but not necessarily at the same time.

 

Tracy, “Ms Stereotype”: the most colourful twisted koeksister of karaoke isn’t scared of calling a spade a spade. She may have the voice of an angel, but don’t be fooled; she ain’t afraid to cut-a-bitch, eksê my laanie. She lives by the mantra “WWCD”– “what woulda coloured do?”

Graham, alias “The Grameleon”: with a list of perbsonas as long as a wizard’s sleeve, this master of Tom-foolery will have you second-guessing yourself at every turn. Never the same person twice, he’ll catch you every time.

 

Simmi: The not-so-chic “Sheik of Comedic Skullduggery”. He may look like dreamy Aladdin, but in actual fact is more like Sinbad the sailor, with charm to pull the flying carpet right out from under you. Be careful of this pretty boy who isn’t afraid to offend.

DStv to launch Star Wars channel

M-Net Movies and MultiChoice are making African television history with a new pop up channel featuring all six epic films from the Star Wars Saga. From 31 August until 13 September DStv Premium customers will be transported to a galaxy far, far away with a special channel on M-Net Movies 109. This groundbreaking two week long addition to the existing nine M-Net Movies channels on DStv is the continent’s very first events channel built around international movies, as well as Africa’s first channel dedicated to all things Star Wars.

Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker, Yoda, Obi-Wan Kenobi and all the other iconic Star Wars characters will wield their lightsabers on channel 109 on DStv Premium, which will feature all the Star Wars movies, as well as other programming linked to the franchise.

 

Each day of the week, starting 31 August, the M-Net Movies Star Wars channel will screen one of the blockbusters that dominated global popular culture since its epic release in 1977 – from the cult classic Star Wars: A New Hope with which George Lucas introduced us to Star Wars mythology to 2005’s Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith which was praised for its mind-blowing digital effects. The movies will play in chronological order of release at 19:30 CAT as well as at 06:00 CAT on the same day, while those who missed out on the action during the week can binge-watch the entire galactic saga from beginning to end on Sundays.

 

The movies will be interspersed with animated features and series, featurettes, documentaries and other delights from the Star Wars universe.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens is due for release by the Walt Disney Company in December 2015.

The Marche du Film Festival de Cannes and Rotterdam Lab Announce SA Producer Development Program

The Marché du Film of Festival du Cannes, and CineMart, part of the International Film Festival Rotterdam, have partnered with the Association for Transformation in Film and Television (ATFT) to create a development program for five (5) South African black producers to attend the Rotterdam Lab and the Marché du Film’s Producers Network in 2016.

 

The five producers and their projects will be selected by the ATFT in collaboration with the Marché du Film and the Rotterdam CineMart, with preference given to producers who have completed a theatrically released film.

 

The program consists of three stages: firstly producers will partake in the Rotterdam Lab in January 2016, next the producers and their projects will be work-shopped in South Africa two months prior to the Marché du Film, and lastly the producers will attend Cannes and bee nrolled in the Producers Network, where they will be spotlighted at one of the Breakfast Meetings of the Producers Network. In Cannes, meetings with distributors and financiers will also be arranged to support further development of their projects.

The Rotterdam Lab is a five-day training workshop for young and emerging producers designed to build up their international network and their experience at an international festivals and markets. Participation in the Rotterdam Lab provides producers with the confidence and skills to navigate the festival circuit and meet professionals who can help finance their projects.

 

Alongside the panel discussions, participants take part in so-called ‘speed dating’ sessions in which they meet with industry delegates in person and receive advice about their own projects. In addition to the organised Lab program, producers can strengthen their network and participate in all other CineMart events, like networking lunches, cocktails and other panels.

 

The workshop in South Africa will take place over three days with two experts bringing their expertise on international co-production and international distribution. The two experts will follow-up with the 5 delegates after the workshop to help them prepare for their participation to the Producers Network at the Marché du Film in Cannes.

 

The Producers Network hosts more than 500 producers from around the world for a series of meetings and unique events specifically designed to stimulate international co-production and optimize networking. During the week, with a different program each day, producers are given opportunities to meet the potential partners that will move their projects forward, namely co-producers, sales agents, distributors and financiers.

 

The SA Producers selected will participate in this program be presented at one of the Breakfast Meetings as well as being introduced to a selection of international guests during a luncheon organized by the Marché du Film and ATFT.

 

To apply to the program, ATFT database members need to respond to the callout they will receive on email and apply to both the Rotterdam CineMart and Marché du Film delegations and submit their project via the online application form.

Glow TV changes its schedule

From 03 August Glow boasts back to back soapies from 5.30pm-10pm every weekday.

glowlogoIn July popular soapie Sadda Haq was extended by a half hour, to start at 5.30pm. This will now be followed by an hour of Bade Achhe Lagte Hai.

New soapie Young Love will air from 7.30-8.30pm. It tells the arduous journey of Anadi who married as a child and is now a young adult struggling to find her identity in the world. It sensitively portrays the plight of children who are unwittingly forced into marriage and have to bear the repercussions for the rest of their lives.

This is followed by your favourite soapie, Parichay at 8.30pm and Office at 9.30pm.

Dual language function

Most exiting is the dual language functionality on the soaps. Viewers will be able chose between watching Glow soaps in English or original Hindi on both DStv and Openview HD, with the simple flick of a button. This kicks in with Parichay this Friday evening at 8.30pm

 Glow for Kids

Glow also introduces children’s shows, weekdays at 4pm.

Little Bheem is a comedy adventure series. Follow the tale of the brave and super-strong Bheem and his friends as they battle to save their town from scheming villains.

Mighty Raju: Raju lives in the city with his parents and his dog, Moby. Raju’s father, a famous scientist, creates a powerful compound that turns him into a superhero. Join the fun and adventure of this superhero and his friends.

Cops and Robbers: Catch the hilarious antics of Anthony, a modern day Robin Hood and the the police inspector who sets out to arrest him.

 Me time for Mom

Saturday mornings will offer some time out for the ladies, with top quality lifestyle shows. Food shows Mummy Ka Magic and Health Mange More air back to back from 8am to 9am.

This is followed by popular wedding makeover show Band Baaja Bride, where brides enjoy five star treatment in the build-up to their big day.

 

Your favourite comedies moves to Saturday night:

How to be Indie at 7pm and the wildly funny, Citizen Khan at 7.30pm and the evening is rounded off with a premium movie at 8pm.

On Sunday nights reality takes centre stage:

India’s Dancing Superstar starts at 7pm and Up Close and Personal with PZ at 8.30pm, followed by MTV Roadies at 9.30pm.

M-NET City tweaks its schedule

M-Net City is making some exciting changes to its line-up to allow DStv Compact viewers to enjoy more local fare alongside a slate of top-notch international shows. From Monday 3 August, the channel will add two telenovelas, four local comedies and a local game show to its early evening weekday schedule while there will also be a special treat for mature, discerning viewers late at night.

“In our quest to create compelling television channels for different target audiences, it’s important for us to keep a constant eye on the preferences and lifestyles of our viewers,” explains Gideon Khobane, Director: M-Net General Entertainment channels. “Our most recent research indicated that M-Net City viewers prefer light-hearted escapism when arriving home after a hard day’s work and telenovelas and local comedy are the perfect genres to get them to chill out in front of the television. We trust that our M-Net City viewers will enjoy our tweaks to the channel which made these additions possible.”

 

To make space for the two highly-acclaimed telenovelas, which will be screened between 17:00 and 19:00, the talk shows The Doctors and The Jerry Springer Show will move to earlier time slots – 15:00 and 16:00 respectively from Mondays to Fridays.

 

In future, the 17:00 timeslot will belong to the telenovela Sparkling Girls in which three housekeepers find fame and fortune when their music goes viral, but then have to deal with a jealous and vindictive singer who will do whatever it takes to tear them apart. Thereafter, at 18:00, M-Net City will bring viewers the Brazilian series Side by Side which scooped an International Emmy Award for Best Telenovela. It explores the friendship of two women in the early 20th century in a country where the divisions of wealth, power and class still prevailed.

 

At 19:00 on Mondays to Thursdays, viewers will be able to time to laugh out loud with these popular local comedy shows:

Mondays – Tonight with Trevor Noah. South African comedian Trevor Noah showcases his distinctly South African sense of humour in this home-grown talk show.

Tuesdays – The Coconuts. When a a middle-class white family are miraculously turned black, chaos ensues as they deal with day-to-day South African situations.

Wednesdays- Clipz. 947 breakfast host Darren “Whackhead” Simpson takes a look at classic online stars and their internet exploits.

Thursdays – Check Coast. This hilarious series follows the lives of the staff at a local Home Affairs office, a place where you find all kinds of comical conundrums.

 

On Friday nights at 19:00 M-Net City viewers can enjoy the blockbuster local game show Deal or No Deal. Host Ed Jordan is surrounded by a bevy of beautiful models who carry suitcases that contain different amounts of money. Only one of them has R1 million – and it’s up to the contestants to choose the right one.

 

Once the children are tucked into bed, everyone who has missed out on Game of Thrones, or who would like to see the series from beginning to end, should remember to tune in for all the intrigue from the Kingdom of Westeros . Game of Thrones Season 1 to Season 5 will be screened on Mondays to Fridays at 23:00 as of Monday 3 August.

 

Other new series starting this August on M-Net City are the action drama NCIS: Los Angeles Season 6 (Friday, 14 August at 21:00) and the family drama The Slap Season 1 (Wednesday 19 August at 22:00). Moreover, don’t forget about the great movies on Saturday and Sunday at 18:00.

Kagiso Media has secured 100% ownership of Urban Brew Studios, an independent production house.

Group CEO of Kagiso Media, Mark Harris, states that this acquisition is in line with its holding company’s, Kagiso Tiso Holdings, strategies of majority ownership in strategic assets and expansion into Africa.

“Urban Brew Studios is recognised for its creative capability and talent in developing content and channels for both local and international markets by using its knowledge of local African languages and culture to develop content suitable to these markets.  Opportunities exist in Africa for a multi-distribution strategy for content.  In recent years, Urban Brew Studios has secured production capacity in Kenya, Zambia, Nigeria and Cameroon,” Harris added.

 

Urban Brew Studios CEO Trish Taylor said, “This development will see us being more closely aligned with Kagiso Media’s strategy of investing in assets that will provide future growth in line with strategic objectives. Both Kagiso Media and Urban Brew Studios will be better poised to play in the content space across all platforms; including TV, radio and digital.”
