Big Brother Mzansi 2 hunt starts next week

Big Brother Mzansi returns for another season following the outstanding success of last year’s show, which saw beloved spaza shop owner Mandla Hlatshwayo walk away with fame, fortune and romance! And of course, in true Biggie style, there’s a twist…this year you can either audition as an individual, or with a partner.

Now the hunt is on for Mzansi Magic‘s 24/7 live reality TV series, Big Brother Mzansi 2.  Think you’ve got what it takes?  If you are bold enough, brave enough, smart and savvy enough to take on the challenge, a spot may await you in Big Brother’s house.

 

“Big Brother Mzansi allows us as a channel to tap our audience’s engagement – specifically in the social networking space. It’s a double-win for our viewers – great viewing today drives great viewing in the future. This show is an entertainment dream, packed with action, drama, romance and humour,” says Nkateko Mabaso, Director of Local Interest Channels at M-Net.

 

If you are a citizen/legal resident of South Africa and 21 years of age or older (as of 01 January 2015), then you can audition for the show. This year auditions will take place simultaneously in Durban, Cape Town and Johannesburg on Saturday 31 January and Sunday 1 February 2015.

 

Auditions in Durban will be held at the BAT Centre (45 Maritime Place); in Cape Town at the Cape Town Lodge (101 Buitengracht Street) and in Johannesburg at The Pyramid Venue in Eloff Street. Registration starts at 08:00 and closes at 15:00 CAT on both audition days. If you are registered by 15:00 CAT you will be auditioned. Remember that auditions are on a first come/first serve basis and you must bring a valid South African ID document with you.

 

If you are wondering what the prize money is, the answer is that it won’t be less than R1 million, and it could be as high as a mouthwatering R2 million! That’s all Biggie is saying for now.

 

So if you think you and your best friend will wow the Big Brother selection team, then make sure you are both at the auditions together. You can pair up with anyone…your brother, sister, cousin, boyfriend, girlfriend, neighbour, gym buddy, golf partner, work mate… anyone you want – as long as they meet the entry requirements and want to participate.

StarSat Pay-TV making inroads in soccer

On Digital Media’s (ODM’s) StarSat satellite pay-TV platform in South Africa, is pleased to announce that it has obtained exclusive production and broadcasting rights for the Turkish Airlines Friendship Cup between German Bundesliga giants VfL Wolfsburg and local club Ajax Cape Town on 14 January 2015, live from Cape Town Stadium at 19:00, on StarTimes Sport 2, channel 241.

Currently in second place on the Bundesliga table, Wolfsburg will also battle it out with South Africa’s Chippa United at the Nelson Mandela Stadium in Port Elizabeth on the 18th January at 16:00.

 

The live action does not end here. StarSat has also acquired the rights to broadcast two other Bundesliga friendly games being played in Florida in the USA. The Florida Cup features two Bundesliga teams and two Brazilian football teams and the games dovetail nicely with the South African games. Fans will be able to view these games also on StarTimes Sport 2, channel 241.

 

Commenting on this, Gary Rathbone, StarTimes Head of Sport said, “One of the first major acquisitions for 2015, for StarTimes/StarSat has been the rights to one of the world’s most exciting and successful leagues – the German Bundesliga. Mzansi brings the love back

A brand new home-grown reality show is coming to Mzansi Magic, DStv Channel 161, on Sunday, 11 January at 17:30 and it’s all set to put the love into 2015.

Simply titled Love Back, the latest addition to the channel’s growing slate of hugely popular local reality shows is based on the proposition that someone who has ever lost the love of their life can get a shot at winning their hearts back!

 

Hosted by multi-talented Thomas Gumede, who adds a light twist to the show and gives some heartfelt support as the former lover seeks to reconcile. Love Back promises to have viewers hooked on the heart-wrenching stories behind the break-ups and make-ups. The show is based around those individuals who still feel inescapably pulled towards each other, even though one half of the former couple hasn’t quite realised it yet!

 

Mzansi Magic viewers will have the opportunity to start the new year in the company of some seriously love struck individuals.

Cricket South Africa (CSA) on Wednesday announced a three-year deal with the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) that will see the public broadcaster provide live television coverage of all the Proteas home international matches.

There will also be live ball-by-ball radio coverage on 2000FM as well as a weekly magazine programme on television.

 

“This is really big news for all cricket fans,” commented CSA Chief Executive, Haroon Lorgat.

 

“We were challenged in the recent past without a deal in place but we are now excited with the new energy and support of the SABC. Free-to-air broadcast is an important ingredient for us to be able to deliver our vision to make cricket a truly national sport that is accessible to all.”

 

“I would like to sincerely thank the SABC for partnering with cricket. Their support will make a big difference to the access, growth and development of the game and will enable all South Africans to watch their Proteas heroes in action.”

 

Through this three-year deal, the SABC will be playing its role in making the sport accessible to every South African citizen

The SABC’s Chief Operations Officer, Hlaudi Motsoeneng, says, “Being a public service broadcaster, we are cognisant of the fact that cricket, which is a national sport, is followed and loved by millions of South Africans. This broadcast deal with Cricket South Africa follows on the heels of SABC Sport launching a new lifestyle Cricket magazine programme on SABC 3 titled ‘The Grand Pavilion’ last week.”

 

“It demonstrates our commitment to showing sports of national importance, and we believe through this three-year deal, the SABC will be playing its role in making the sport accessible to every South African citizen through our Radio and Television platforms,” adds Motsoeneng.

 

The importance of having the Proteas in live action on the public broadcaster can be gauged from the following statistics:

 

According to a survey by the South African Audience Research Foundation (SAARF), there are 7, 4 million people who actively follow cricket within South Africa.

 

Of these fans, 1,7 million have access to DStv premium where the majority of cricket is broadcast live. This partnership gives the other 5, 6 million people access to view the Proteas in action.

 

Over the previous cricket season 13 million South Africans watched the Proteas live via SABC broadcasts.

The free-to-air broadcast helps to drive growth and diversity of Proteas fans with the reach of SABC 3 bringing in African language viewers.

The coverage starts on SABC 3 with the first Sunfoil Test match against the West Indies on December 17 and continues through the
KFC T20 International series and the Momentum ODI series in the New Year.

The period of the deal covers future international series against New Zealand (2015); England (2015-16), Australia (2016), New Zealand (2016) and Sri Lanka (2016-17).

Naspers interim results show solid growth

Naspers last week announced its financial results for the six months to 30 September 2014. Revenues measured on an economic interest basis, including the proportionate contribution from associates and joint ventures, expanded 30% year on year (YoY). With the group’s ecommerce and internet businesses growing ahead of pay-television and print, 72% of group revenues are now earned offshore.

Core headline earnings grew 24% to R6,1bn, despite expensing R4,4bn in the continued development of the group’s ecommerce and pay-television platforms. “We are pleased with our progress to date,” said Naspers chair Ton Vosloo. “Execution capacity and operations are strengthening throughout the group and the focus is on customer satisfaction, engagement and retention.”

 

Boosted by accelerating revenue growth in many etail businesses, internet remained the fastest-growing segment and accounted for 58% of total group revenues. ”We are seeing meaningful increases in organic traffic in our markets as we deliver compelling customer propositions and scale our platforms,” said CEO Bob van Dijk. Organic growth resulted in Naspers’s ecommerce revenues increasing 43% YoY to R12,1bn. This segment reported a trading loss of R2,4bn after incurring development spend of R3,6bn.

 

The group’s classifieds efforts are focused on about 40 countries globally and after recent brand migrations, the majority of classifieds sites now operate under the OLX banner. Naspers recently strengthened its position in this segment through an agreement with Schibsted to jointly develop select markets in Latin America and South East Asia, subject to EU approval. Competition remains aggressive, but the group has outgrown its competitors on the measures that matter most, particularly in mobile.

 

Pay TV

In pay-television, solid subscriber growth of 342 000 households drove revenues up 18% to R20,2bn. The business covers 50 countries on the African continent and provides services to over 8,4m homes. Trading profit increased 11% to R5bn, after expensing R642m of investment in DTT and online video initiatives. The personal video recorder (PVR) base expanded to 1,2m subscribers and customers are now renting some 600 000 movies per month on BoxOffice, a service that will soon be expanded into sub-Saharan Africa. Analogue switch-offs, once implemented, should provide future momentum for subscriber growth on the DTT platform.

 

 

 

The print media segment continues to face tough trading conditions and structural changes to the industry. Overall revenues grew slightly, but margins contracted further due to accelerated investments in digital solutions and new growth areas to diversify the revenue base.

 

 

Naspers’s share of core headline earnings from associates, including Tencent in China and Mail.ru Group in Russia, increased by 43% to R6,4bn. This was mainly due to continued strong performance by Tencent, including benefits from its transaction with JD.com.

 

 

“The second half of the year is traditionally the most active part of the year for most of our businesses. We expect some pick-up in spend as we capitalise on the holiday season, which could result in lower core headline earnings for that period,” cautioned CFO, Basil Sgourdos. “Our goal remains to develop online classifieds, etail and DTT to deliver future growth and create value over time,” he added.
