Big Brother M2 Auditions kick-off

Posted by radio On February - 9 - 2015 ADD COMMENTS

Proving the clear popularity of Big Brother Mzansi, this past weekend saw over 2500 hopefuls, eager for their chance to participate in the highly rated Mzansi Magic hit, head to auditions in Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg.

And whilst some of the wannabe housemates came alone, others came with a partner in line with this season’s call for entry which is open to both individuals and twosomes.

From bold fashion choices and outspoken personalities to gorgeous divas and aspiring stars, the three cities delivered on colourful characters each determined to make an unforgettable impression on selectors who had the very difficult job of shortlisting candidates for the next round of auditions.

“We are very pleased with the positive response that the auditions had and want to thank everyone who took time to come out and participate. Especially considering that if chosen, they will have to give up the comforts of their homes, their family and their friends, possibly for just over two months. It’s incredible to see people willing to take up this truly unique opportunity, it demonstrates how much people engage with this format,” says Nkateko Mabaso, Director for Local Interest Channels at M-Net.

Also commenting on the auditions was Endemol SA Managing Director Sivan Pillay who said, Big Brother Mzansi 2 offers South African hopefuls yet another shot at becoming a millionaire. We are extremely proud that the Big Brother format continues to excite viewers and prompt participations. The excitement is also building as audiences anticipate the theme for 2015 and what it will offer viewers in terms of on screen entertainment on Mzansi Magic.”

With the first stage of auditions now complete, those individuals shortlisted to proceed further in the entry process will now undergo several audition stages before the final housemates for Big Brother Mzansi 2 are chosen. Among these will be psychological assessments, in-depth interviews with the show’s producers and of course, criminal and background checks.

Big Brother Mzansi 2 Starts on Sunday, 29 March 2015 on Mzansi Magic (DStv channel 161) and runs for 56 days.

Prize money on the show this year has been kept secret and the only clue is that it won’t be less than R1 million, but it could be as high as a mouthwatering R 2 million! That’s all Biggie is saying for now.

One Day Leader Contestants Reflect in a Book

Posted by radio On February - 7 - 2015 ADD COMMENTS

Anyone who watched the television series One Day Leader knows that new leaders are born all over South Africa in communities with and without resources.  These leaders are determined individuals, ready to defend their views in a debate, to take on new ideas and will go out of their way to serve their communities.

SABC Education has published a book ‘One Day Leader’ written by previous participants of the One Day Leader television show who share their views on critical elements of South African life, namely race and culture, citizenship, entrepreneurship, education, gender equality, healthcare, poverty and leadership.

Danie Swart, Head of Education says “these young leaders have high standards and are raising the bar to achieve excellence in all that they do. In the book the participants share their opinions and react to each other’s viewpoints; the reader can make their own stand and debate with family and friends.”

One Day Leader is a television series in which young people showcase their leadership skills by tackling modern day South African social, economic and political issues in their quest for the coveted title of One Day Leader.  Each series tells the story of six youngsters who evolve from ordinary young people into willing, influential, accountable, thoughtful, calculating and brave visionaries.

Somizi joins Idols family

Posted by radio On February - 1 - 2015 ADD COMMENTS

South Africa’s most flamboyant and successful choreographer, Somizi Mhlongo, has joined the Idols SA judging panel.

Somgaga – as he is fondly known amongst his many fans – will be the fourth judge alongside veteran Idols SA judges Randall Abrahams, Unathi Msengana and Gareth Cliff for the eleventh season of South Africa’s biggest TV talent competition, it was announced at the first day of auditions today at the State Theatre in Pretoria.

Want to audtition for Idols? Find out more about where and how to do this on the official Idols website.

This is the first time since founding judge Dave Thompson left the show at the end of Season 5 (2009) that Idols SA has a four-person Idols panel.

“I literally couldn’t sleep last night!” an excited Somizi said just before he was introduced to the big crowd of wannabe Idols stars, who waited in anticipation to find out who this year’s judges would be. “I’ve never had a wedding but I imagine it feels a little like this. I’ve known about this for about two months already and I didn’t tell a soul,” he continued, “not even Unathi, and we’ve been working on her music video together every day!”

Somizi became a quick favourite with the Idols viewers when he mentored the Top 6 for the Idols SA Season 10 “Showstoppers” episode last year. “Somizi is pure showbiz – he understands what it takes for a performer to really engage an audience, over and above just the music,” Idols SA producer/director Gavin Wratten said today. “That’s why we think his perspective will be an invaluable perspective in the judging process.”

“I will be judging the ‘razzmatazz’,” Somizi explains. “Contestants are warned: from now on a good voice alone isn’t enough anymore – I’m going to want contestants who have showmanship!”

“Gareth, Randall and Unathi are a fantastic judging team,” M-Net Head of Publicity Lani Lombard noted, “but we thought it would be valuable to add some extra ‘zing’ this year with South Africa’s ‘king of bling’.”

Somizi Mhlongo was born into Mzansi showbiz, as the son of the late comedian Ndaba Mhlongo and veteran actress Mary Twala. He has been at the vanguard of South African entertainment for many years, in musical theatre and also as the choreographer of choice for music videos and live productions, including the Channel O Africa Music Video Awards and the Miss South Africa pageant. He has also served as a talent show judge for two seasons of Dance Your Butt Off.

Idols SA Season 11 officially kicked off at the State Theatre in Pretoria this weekend. The next audition session be in Cape Town at the GrandWest Casino and Entertainment World on Saturday 7 February, and thereafter the Idols team will scour talent at The Playhouse in Durban. The KZN auditions take place on Saturday 21 February. The final auditions for Idols SA Season 11 will take place at Carnival City East of Johannesburg on Saturday 1 March.

Contestants should be South African citizens between the ages of 16 and 30 to enter Idols SA 11, and South Africa’s aspiring superstars are urged to remember their ID documents at the auditions. Underage contestants have to be accompanied by their parents.

M-Net brings you Power Couple SA

Posted by radio On January - 28 - 2015 ADD COMMENTS

M-Net  is bringing TV fans yet another first! In 2015, viewers will fall in love with a brand-new format, Power Couple.

M-Net 101 will be the first English-language channel in the world to produce Power Couple – already a  ratings success story in Israel and Portugal, and currently in production in Brazil.

“Power Couple is a revolutionary concept that combines all the elements needed for compelling television,” says Victor Eckard, M-Net’s Director for M-Net 101 and M-Net Edge. “There will be romance, drama, action, adventure and loads of suspense in this unique feel-good series with traces of  Fear Factor, Big Brother and  game show-type challenges which could yield massive cash rewards for the contestants. It’s all very exciting and we’re thrilled to lead the international pack again by bringing our viewers a fresh format that we believe will soon take the world by storm.”

Power Couple will test the relationships of eight couples, who will move into a luxurious villa somewhere in Cape Town. These couples will compete at thrilling, nerve-wracking challenges, during which they have to illustrate how much they know, trust or love their partners. Based on the outcome of these tasks, two couples will be up for elimination each week and the others will decide whom they would like to keep in the game.

These tough, spectacular challenges – which will sometimes include high-adrenaline action adventures – will allow the couples to accumulate thousands of Rands by betting on whether their loved one will be able to complete a task, without  knowing how much their partner has invested in their ability to succeed. If they get it right, the money will be added to their kitty – but if the partner fails, the money will be subtracted from the amount they carry through to the end of the show.

“It could be far more than a million rand,” says Eckard. “But also take note, becoming SA’s first Power Couple will be about more than being brave and courageous in the challenges. You’ll have to use your EQ and IQ to ensure that the other couples don’t get rid of you, while strategising to stay ahead of the others at all times.”

If you want to become South Africa’s first Power Couple, do take note that auditions will start soon. The audition dates and venues are as follows:

14 February – The Bay Hotel, Camps Bay, Cape Town

18 February – Moses Mabhida Stadium, Durban

28 February – Indaba Hotel, Johannesburg

But who is eligible to enter and what will the producers be looking for?

“You have to be older than 21 and a South African citizen, willing to do crazy and wild things for love,” says Handrie Basson from Afrokaans, who’re producing the show for M-Net 101. “We’ll be looking for diverse, interesting and outgoing people who believe that they’re a winning pair – whether they’ve been married for yonks or at the very start of a relationship.”
