The award which aims to acknowledge the very best of business journalism, comes in recognition of the network’s efforts to highlight the narrative of Africa’s growth and the opportunities present in the continent

On 01 May 2018, the Lagos Chamber of Commerce & Industry (LCCI) presented CNBC Africa (www.CNBCAfrica.com) the 2018 Award for “Best Business Television”, in Victoria Island, Lagos. The award which aims to acknowledge the very best of business journalism, comes in recognition of the network’s efforts to highlight the narrative of Africa’s growth and the opportunities present in the continent. According the Director of Advocacy & Research, LCCI, Dr. Vincent Nwani, “the objective of the annual awards is to recognise, celebrate and promote private and public institutions that have exhibited the core values of best business practices, growth through innovations, business sustainability and have positively impacted the society. This award is the outcome of a painstaking selection process from numerous entries received for this award category and backed by feedback from industry/market intelligence”.

The distinct blend of PAN African and International content, and keen focus on economic news led CNBC Africa to emerge as the undisputed winner of this award. CNBC Africa commenced its African  journey in 2007- and has since then, grown to be a dependable network for actionable business and financial information. The detailed coverage provided by the channel across markets and sectors, makes it a reliable source of information to the African business community. With a viewership crossing 23 million households on DSTV, Startimes Nigeria, Canal Plus and Kwese TV, across 48 African countries- CNBC Africa bridges the gap between CEO’s, entrepreneurs, government, the business community and the average man. The channel has state-of-the-art infrastructure and studios in Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Kigali and Johannesburg, and imbibes a PAN African spirit unique to itself.

Mr. Frederic Vandevyver, Executive Director for West Africa, collected the award on behalf of CNBC Africa and expressed his gratitude for the honour. Mr Vandevyver noted that CNBC Africa remains committed to creating value and empowering people by accurately and passionately telling Africa’s business story first; He stated, “To get an award in Lagos, which in my opinion is one of the most vibrant economic and business cities in Africa means a lot. I want to dedicate this award to the team working here in West Africa. They work 24 hours, 7 days a week to ensure that we cover all the business news in the best way possible. This award goes to them.”

The network aims to be Africa’s business channel of choice across the continent – focused on aggressively growing its viewership by making the channel more accessible to the average African, this award does provide more momentum and encouragement to channel to achieve its dream.

eTV to air award winning Winnie documentary

Posted by radio On April - 10 - 2018 ADD COMMENTS

eMedia is proud to bring Pascale Lamche’s award-winning documentary Winnie to the small screen this week.

This illuminating work brings fresh perspective and insight into the life of the anti-apartheid activist and human rights advocate Nomzamo Winnie Madikizela-Mandela.

The documentary won a Sundance Award in 2017.

Winnie explores Mandikizela-Mandela’s contribution to the struggle against apartheid from inside the country and includes interviews with Madikizela-Mandela herself, those who were closest to her, and those who sought to extinguish her radical capacity to shake up the order of things.

“With acquisition of the rights to Winnie, the eMedia Group is proud to contribute to the collective understanding of our history, as we continue to do every day in our various media properties,”  says eMedia Holdings CEO says Andre van der Veen.

“We are particularly excited to be able to offer this award-winning production to our OpenView viewers as part of our commitment to bringing high-quality content to our free-to-air satellite platform. We have also made a library of our key Winnie Mandela interviews and stories available on our YouTube channel so that our viewers are able to watch these enlightening interviews at their convenience.”

Mapi Mhlangu, MD and editor-in-chief of eNCA says:”In South Africa we have lived through turbulent times, and coming to terms with that history is often difficult. The passage of time often distorts as much as it allows for better insight into the past.  Making sense of that past remains absolutely key to imagining a better future, though. In that spirit we hope that this documentary will help many South Africans confirm what they already know, gain new insight into what they have long believed about our collective history, but also, to help inform how we remember someone as important to our history as Nomzamo Winnie Madikizela Mandela.

“The life of this singular woman is indeed humbling, and holds many lessons for those of us who have benefited from her work over her long life,” says Mhlangu.

Marlon Davids, e.tv’s head of channels, says: “We look forward to scheduling Winnieon e.tv and on Openview to enable South Africans to see this excellent film in their numbers.”

Lamche’s account of the political life of Madikizela-Mandela includes fascinating archival footage, extensive interviews with her, her daughter Zindzi, and those who sought her downfall. Though firmly on the side of Winnie, this film nonetheless offers a unique perspective of recent South African history. In the process, it restores Madikizela-Mandela as a key figure in the liberation of South Africa.

The documentary will premiere on eNCA on Wednesday, 11 April, at 9pm, after which it will broadcast to all South Africans on e.tv and OpenView.

Puppet Nation, one of South Africa’s most awarded TV shows, has just won another SEVEN SAFTAS, brining the total over the years to 29. However, the show is now no longer broadcast anywhere in South Africa, meaning that the most respected and loved voices of biting political satire has been silenced. The Puppet Nation team is on the search for a new broadcast home.

“Posthumous”Puppet Nation SAFTA Wins “Bittersweet”

_______________________________________________________________________

PuppetNation, the show that nobody will put on nationaltelevision, collected 7 SAFTAs at this year’s event, bringing its total overthe years to 29. The awards were for the final season of Puppet Nation which aired on pan-african satellite channel StarSat(StarTimes ch201) in 2017, before they ended their relationship with the showdue to budget cuts. Puppet Nation, which has also earned two International Emmy nominations in recent years, wasnominated for eight awards, winning the trophies for Production Design,Wardrobe, Sound, Cinematography, Scriptwriting, Directing, and Best TV Comedy.

“It’s a show that has been recognisedconsistently since it launched in 2009, both locally and internationally, as astandout comedy show, giving South Africa biting homegrown satire. But sadly, right now, the puppets are in their boxes, and we don’t know when or if they’llbe coming out to play again,” said Executive Producer Thierry Cassuto. Fans ofthe show, like The Nelson Mandela Foundation, Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutuand trade union leader Zwelinzima Vavi among others, have consistently spokenout for the show and about the importance of satire and critical comedy in ademocracy like ours. But while the programme has a very large social mediafollowing, it cannot financially survive with a purely online existence.

“We hope that these awards will remindbroadcasters and sponsors that PuppetNation is high quality television, that it makes viewers – young and old-  think and laugh, and that it deservesa TV home,” Cassuto added.

In addition, Both Worlds, the company behind Puppet Nation, was nominated for Best Gameshow for the second year in a row for Point of Order – another show which is no longer on air. Host Tumi Morake wasalso nominated as best presenter for the last two years. “Point of Order was another casualty when StarSat were no longerable to afford it,” Cassuto says, “and while we’re delighted that its Afrikaans sister show, Parlement Parlement, isdoing well on kykNET, we’re dying to see Season 5 of Point of Order on a new TV channel soon.” In the meantime, fans can stream the first award-winning  season of Point of Order on Showmax.

Death Row Chronicles, on BET

Posted by radio On February - 27 - 2018 ADD COMMENTS

Watch online: compelling series about the legacy of Death Row Records, with stories of an interesting and dangerous era in the history of hip-hop.

Watch this compelling six-part documentary series, Death Row Chronicles starting Thursday 8 March at 21:50 on BET (DStv Channel 129) and streaming live on DStv Now. There is also controversy around the series, with Suge Knight’s fiancée being arrested for helping him give interviews to BET.

At the height of it’s success, Death Row was unmatched in creativity, topping the charts and breaking sales records.  But all this came at a great cost of violence and murder. In the 1990s, the golden era of hop-hop, Death Row Records was more than a symbol of gangsta rap – its no-nonsense leader Marion ‘Suge’ Knight was it’s Godfather. He founded the label in 1991, and they promoted the ‘thug life’ as their chosen lifestyle.  Knight was no businessman, but his forceful attitude took the label to a peak of $100 million. The menacing music was a reflection of the record label’s reputation.

The series is part true-crime murder mystery and part hip-hop drama, and includes interviews and commentary from journalists and others who were around at the height of Death Row’s success. Key evidence is uncovered, misinformation and truth is revealed, and Shakur’s role is also highlighted, almost 22 years after his death in Las Vegas in 1996. His death was the beginning of the end for Death Row, with conspiracy theories about how the brash and hostile Knight was involved in the murder of the young superstar, despite his denials. Don’t miss the never-seen-before footage, which includes an interview with a witness of Shakur’s murder.

Don’t miss this series about the legacy of Death Row Records lives on forever, with stories of an interesting era in the history of hip-hop.  Find out how a promising footballer from Compton ended up evolving into a CEO who would influence and intimidate others, how he gave the record label wings to soar and how he brought it crashing down.

The truth is more horrifying, weird and compelling than fiction. Visit our True Crime Documentaries Playlist for more true crime shows.
