Netflix, the world’s leading internet entertainment service, today announced its first original African animated series, Mama K’s Team 4, produced by Cape Town-based Triggerfish Animation Studios and leading London-based kids’ entertainment specialist CAKE.

 

Mama K’s Team 4 tells the story of four teen girls living in the neo-futuristic African city of Lusaka, Zambia who are recruited by a retired secret agent still committed to saving the world. The series joins Netflix’s growing slate of original animated programming designed for kids and families everywhere, brought to 190 countries by artists from around the world.

Mama K’s Team 4 is created by Zambian writer Malenga Mulendema, who was one of eight winners in the Triggerfish Story Lab initiative in 2015, a pan-african talent search.

 

Designed by Cameroonian artist Malcolm Wope, it draws visual inspiration from retro-’90s R&B and hip hop girl groups.

 

To join the creative team on the series, Netflix is collaborating with Triggerfish Animation studio and CAKE to launch a continent-wide search for local female writing talent.

 

Malenga grew up watching cartoons on TV and found herself asking why no heroes looked like her and why they didn’t live in a world that felt like her own. “In creating a superhero show set in Lusaka, I hope to introduce the world to four strong African girls who save the day in their own fun and crazy way. Most importantly, I want to illustrate that anyone from anywhere can be a superhero,” commented Malenga.

 

“In addition to giving African writers a global platform on which to be heard, we are excited to present this powerful and entertaining new animated series that brings Malenga’s incredible and unique vision to life on Netflix,” said Melissa Cobb, vice president of original animation at Netflix. “Mama K’s Team 4 has the potential to give a whole new generation of African children the opportunity to see themselves on-screen in the powerful, aspirational characters they look up to.”

The unique Afrosymphonic concert brings together diverse acts including South African soulful house band Mi Casa; the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra; Afrikaans singing sensation Refentse Morake; acclaimed dramatic soprano Andiswa Makana; jazz songstress Zoë Modiga and stage & screen stars Samantha Peo & Craig Urbani, under the baton of Maestros Richard Cock and Brandon Phillips.

 

Filmed under magnificent Cape skies, on the iconic Great Lawn at the Vergelegen Wine Estate in Somerset West in March 2019, RMB Starlight Classicsis a South African cultural institution that captures the magic that happens when rooted African rhythms, hot pop hits, legendary operatic arias and soaring classical scores combine to make something truly unique. The RMB Starlight Classicsconcerts are held twice a year, in March and September.

 

 

Also part of the lineup are South African singing ambassadors, the Drakensberg Boys Choir; the Cape Town Opera Chorus; renowned jazz saxophonist Karendra Devroop and operatic stars Sipho Fubesi & Bongani Kubeka.

Game of Thrones S8 episode 2 preview

The first episode of Game of Thrones S8 was relatively death-free and peaceful… we doubt that’s going to last.

*Spoilers ahead if you haven’t caught up with episode one*

Not even Jon’s epic first ride on a dragon could lighten up what was a very dark start to Season 8. Speaking of Jon, or rather we should say, Aegon Targaryen, what will happen between him and Queen Daenerys now that he finally knows he’s the rightful heir to the Iron Throne?

And why isn’t he freaking out that she’s his aunt?

Thank goodness this preview for episode 2 is out, or the fan theories would drive us nuts.

We can’t wait for next week’s episode to drop – especially as each one is getting just a little bit longer.

But we’re not sure that she’ll have time to mull over it because Winterfell is under attack! Has the army of white walkers arrived?

Availability
  • Pricing and availability for the Apple TV+ video subscription service will be announced later this autumn.

  • Through Family Sharing, users can share Apple TV+ and subscriptions to Apple TV channels.

  • The Apple TV app will be available on Samsung smart TVs beginning this spring and on Amazon Fire TV, LG, Roku, Sony and VIZIO platforms in the future.

  • Later this year, customers with eligible VIZIO, Samsung, LG and Sony smart TVs will be able to effortlessly play videos and other content from their iPhone or iPad directly to their smart TVs with AirPlay 2 support.

After a failed fertility treatment and a car accident in season 2 (when she overheard her best friend confessing her love to David), MJ finally chose to cleanse her crazy life of toxic people and relationships. At the end of season four, MJ’s co-worker, Justin, got down on one knee to propose, but he didn’t know that MJ may already be pregnant … and not with his child! The teaser trailer of the finale movie shows MJ in a white wedding dress, and we can’t wait to see who’s wearing the matching suit.

NBC Universal International Networks’ global, multi-platform brand dedicated to all things pop culture –announced that they are commissioning a local production of Celebrity Game Night.  The series, comprised of ten one-hour episodes, will premiere late 2019 on E! (DStv channel 124).

Celebrity Game Night is based on the Primetime Emmy Award winning series Hollywood Game Night, hosted, in America, by Jane Lynch. In each episode, two teams of celebrity guests will face-off as they play hilarious and outrageous party games that test pop culture knowledge, acting skills and nerves of steel. The local commission will feature a local host who will guide African celebrities through their evening and ensure the game night is filled with outrageous fun!

The Magic In Motion Academy celebrated 13 film and television graduates at the 5th graduation for the Academy

Higher Education Deputy Minister, Buti Manamela who attended the event as the guest of honour, acknowledged the success of the students and the commitment of the MIM Academy.

“The impact that this programme has had on these graduates is invaluable. Over the past five years, this programme has provided a gateway to the film and television industry for a significant number of students. The film and television industry is a big contributor to our economy and these graduates are now able to tell our stories that can reach all corners of the world” says Deputy Minister, Buti Manamela.

 

“We recognise that the global television industry is evolving, and we need to empower anew generation of young professionals. This internship gives the most talented creatives work experience with the leading production companies and culminates with the production of movies that are scheduled on Mzansi Magic and seen by millions. Our interns graduate with a CV that sets them up to find work – we are committed to training and jobcreation” says MultiChoice General Entertainment CEO Yolisa Phahle.”

 

 

Founded in 2014 and directed by acclaimed filmmaker Bobby Heaney, the MIM Academy focuses on transforming the South African film and TV industry by upskilling film graduates, empowering them with the necessary knowledge and experience that they will require to start their careers and successfully transform the video-entertainment industry in South Africa. To date, 44 interns have graduated from the programme, 12 films have been produced and 60% of the class of 2017 interns are employed.

 

 

This year, the graduates were taken through an intensive 12-month internship where their tertiary education was supplemented by hands-on practical training. They were mentoredby industry experts from some of the country’s most respected production houses and worked on various exciting productions. Production partners played an influential role in ensuring that the graduates were exposed to all facets of the production process and ensured inclusion on a variety of sets.

 

 

“The class of 2018 has been incredibly dedicated, having produced 4 movies of exceptional quality for Mzansi Channels including Hawe Ma! and Umdlalo wempilo. We look forward totheir contribution to the industry” said Bobby.

The month of April sees the premiere of SABC 2 new groundbreaking Xitsonga drama – Giyani – Land of Blood. The drama will start on Monday, 01 April 2019 at 21h30 and will flight Mondays – Wednesdays. The telenovela, which is set in the heart of South Africa’s own Eden, Giyani in Limpopo Province, brings to life the conflict of two families locked in a bitter, decades-long squabble over a contested piece of fertile land and the banana plantation built on it.

The first episode opens with a jubilant celebration of the land being returned to the community as a result of a successful land restitution claim. Under the apartheid regime, the land had been assigned to the Van Reenen family who had built their considerable wealth through the banana plantation, which supplied every major supermarket in South Africa. The farm, reclaimed by the community, is renamed Tiakeni – a Xitsonga phrase meaning ‘Build Yourselves’, in tribute to the community’s perseverance and success in taking back their land.

 

Giyani – Land of Blood brings to life the ageless themes of love rivalries, forbidden passion, stolen land, and corruption. The story is centered around the conflict between the Mudau and Baloyi families. Set in the fictional village of Risinga, Giyani has harnessed the considerable skills of wellknown industry veterans as well as undiscovered talent to deliver the gripping storylines that are sure to keep audiences transfixed. Amongst the leads are acclaimed performers – Linah Ebony Ngcobo, Obed Baloyi, Charles Baloyi, Candy “Tsa Mandebele” Mokwena, Ndivhuho Mutsila and Yvonne Chaka Chaka.

 

Adding to the roll-call of exemplary talent associated with the show, the theme song is composed and performed by the legendary Dr. Thomas Chauke and the Shinyori Sisters, renowned pioneers of Tsonga music, and produced by award-winning Tshedza Pictures.

 

SABC2 Programme Manager, Ms Jacqui Hlongwane stated: “In our effort to deliver on the public service and language mandate as well as introduce fresh and landmark content, SABC2 is delighted to bring to the South African public, Giyani-Land of Blood; the first ever Xitsonga drama and telenovela.

 

 

Produced by Tshedza Pictures and boasting a star-studded cast of Xitsonga actors, who for the better part of their careers, have had to act and perform in roles and languages other than their own in order to make a living; Giyani-Land of Blood has now given them this rightful opportunity. Equally, Xitsonga viewers who have had to watch dramas in other languages will now have their own drama series for the first time; celebrating and affirming their rich culture, tradition, identity, stories, music and heritage.”
