DISCOP announces partnership with Sky Rink Studios

Posted by radio On October - 26 - 2017 ADD COMMENTS

DISCOP Johannesburg is pleased to announce a partnership with Sky Rink studios, aimed at supporting independent producers working in Johannesburg.  This year’s DISCOP Johannesburg will be hosting over 300 African producers who could benefit from the resources now available at Sky Rink.

With the massive and ever-increasing interest in African content, there are more and more independent producers looking to do co-productions in South Africa and specifically Joburg.

All of these productions will need sets, crews, production offices, fully equipped, sound proofed studios, as well as editing suits and final mix facilities.

SkyRink Studios offers a one-stop shop with channel hosting and live transmission capabilities, tools that are critical for the growth of content made in Africa.

As part of this partnership, DISCOP will promote Sky Rink facilities via tours taking place during DISCOP where producers will have the opportunity to visit the facilities and Sky Rink will also have a space at DISCOP to showcase their various platforms and services.

Frank Mahopi, Executive Chairman of Sky Rink explains further, “As Sky Rink Studios we see this partnership as a great opportunity to showcase our facilities to the right target audience. Our high-tech facilities create a one stop shop located three blocks away from Downtown Music Studios in the City of Joburg’s Creative Corridor. The Sky Rink Studios and Downtown Music Studios present an immediate and effective solution for Producers on the continent and abroad looking for production facilities that will meet their high tech needs.”

PatrickZuchowicki of DISCOP also stresses the importance of a facility such as this in regards to the growth of the African content industry, “DISCOP is committed to supporting the growth of content made in Africa. Producers however, need facilities that understand and support them. We feel that Sky Rink Studios is just that kind of facility and we are excited to partner with them and share this valuable information with the hundreds of producers from across Africa who will be attending this year’s event. This kind of partnership is exactly whereDISCOP aims to be as we continue to find ways to support the industry on the continent.

SkyRink Studios stand can be found in the main exhibition hall at The Sandton Convention Centre, along with dozens of other major players from the African and global film industry.

DISCOP Johannesburg started on Wednesday October 25th and runs daily through Friday Oct 27th.

On Saturday, 4 November 2017, animators and storytellers across Africa will be able to hear first-hand what it takes to develop TV series for worldwide distribution.

During an Animate Africa webinar streamed on YouTube Live, Triggerfish Animation Studios will share insights from two years of developing TV series through The Story Lab, that had the support of The Walt Disney Company and the Department of Trade and Industry. The Story Lab, to date, has led to two worldwide distribution deals for series set and made in Africa.

In 2015, Triggerfish ran a search for animation writers throughout the African continent.  The Triggerfish Story Lab attracted 1 378 projects from 30 countries across Africa, with eight chosen to be taken into full development.

At the webinar, Triggerfish will discuss what made those eight projects stand out and also share some of the feedback they’ve received from international distributors.

Last month, Triggerfish announced its partnership with leading kids’ entertainment specialist CAKE to co-produce one of these, the comedy action series,Mama K’s Super 4.

Aimed at 6-11 year olds, Mama K’s Super 4 is set in Lusaka, where four teenage girls are recruited by former secret agent Mama K to help her save the world. Fighting rich and powerful opponents with limited resources means the girls will have to be smart and resourceful in a show in which taking down the bad guys and turning in your homework is all in a day’s work!

At the webinar, Zambian creator Malenga Mulendema and her Cameroon-born character designer, Malcolm Wope, will discussMama K’s Super 4 as one of four case studies of projects generating international interest from Africa.

Vanessa Sinden, who produced the Story Lab, will also give some highly practical tips on how to get your concept into a pitch document that can be shown to distributors.

Other confirmed speakers include award-winning Kenyan filmmaker (and Story Lab alumni) Wanuri Kahiu; Raffaella Delle Donne, co-writer of two of South Africa’s five highest-grossing films of all-time,Adventures in Zambezia and Khumba; Triggerfish CEO Stuart Forrest; and the founders of two other South African animation companies: Bugbox and Sanusi Chronicles.

Delegates will be able to ask questions via Facebook and Twitter.

“If you have ever thought about bringing your own characters to life as an animated TV series, this webinar is for you,” says Triggerfish CEO Stuart Forrest. “The Triggerfish Story Lab proved again that Africa is full of amazing stories, at a time when there’s a global demand for more diverse content, so it feels like African animation is at a tipping point.”

The webinar is organized by Animate Africa, with the support of M-Net 101, Toon Boom Animation, Triggerfish Animation Studios and the Walt Disney Company Africa, in partnership with African Digital Art, AnimationSA, Animation West Africa, Animation Xchange,  Arterial Network, Association of Animation Artists, Cape Town International Animation Festival, Cape Town International Film Market and Festival,  CGAfrica, Comexposed, Design Indaba, Digital Lab Africa, Fan Con, Kawkab El Rasameen (Painter’s Planet), Kwazulu-Natal Film Commission, Lagos Comic Con, Lusaka Comic Con, Naiccon, Tanzania CGI Artists, The Animation Club Africa, The National Film and Video Foundation of South Africa, Wesgro, and Writers Guild of South Africa.

What is your absolute favourite film of all time? The one that opened your eyes, tugged at your heartstrings and made your soul leap with joy? Were you born in the golden age of cinema? Is there a stack of fantastic features your like-minded friends and family have been raving about, which you’re sad to admit you haven’t seen YET?  You now have the opportunity to tick off all the films you still need to watch – or enjoy again – before it’s time to kick the bucket!

M-Net and MultiChoice have created yet another exciting movies pop-up channel as a special treat to DStv Premium customers. Between Monday 30 October until Saturday 2 December the M-Net Movies Bucket List pop-up channel will count down 100 popular and iconic Hollywood movies to see before you die.

This selection of fine films and all-time favourites will be showcased on DStv’s channel 109 with the first of the 100 movies scheduled for just after 18:00 on Thursday, 3 October. Thereafter, the countdown will continue all the way to the number one main attraction on Saturday, 2 December at 20:30. Depending on the duration and age-restrictions of these films, the daily countdown will kick off on weekdays at approximately 18:00 and on weekends just before or after 16:00.

To receive the nod for the coveted M-Net Movies Bucket List, compiled by an expert team of film fanatics, a movie had to be entrenched in popular culture, define an era, shift mediums, uproot the status quo, delight a variety of audiences, impress critics worldwide and be able to reignite your love for movies.

“Our themed pop-up channels such as the Star Wars, Harry Potter, BlackOut, Fast and Furious and James Bond channels have been huge hits and we promised to continue curating unique experiences for our M-Net Movies audiences,” says Jan du Plessis, Director: M-Net Channels. “With the M-Net Movie Bucket List we’re taking the pop-up concept to the next level. Never before have viewers been able to see so many magnificent game-changing movies in one place over such a short time.”

While M-Net Movies will share the titles from #100 to #11 on its programming schedules, the Top 10 films on the list will remain top secret. This means that the final films on the M-Net Movies Bucket List will only be revealed to DStv customers on the day of the screening, so you will have to be sure to tune in to channel 109 on the day that they air.

“Keeping hush about these titles just adds to the excitement of this once-in-a-lifetime movie compilation,” Du Plessis says. “We all have our own bucket lists based on our own taste and we believe it will be great fun for movie fans to compare notes and see whether their favourites have made it onto the pop-up channel.”

On top of the 100 must-see-movies-before-you-die-modern-day motion pictures, M-Net Movies will also fuel film fandom with the M-Net Movies Bucket List Bonus Features, as well as a fabulous viewers competition. To win big in the M-Net Bucket List viewer’s competition you have to curate your own the Top 10 movie list at The competition closes on 30 November before the Top 10 hits your screens.

The M-Net Movies Bucket List Bonus Features will comprise additional classics which can’t be ignored but which will appeal to niche audiences. Among these titles are vintage silver screen darlings that were ground-breaking at their time, like Mary Poppins, Casablanca and Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

The M-Net Movies Bucket List schedule (prior to the Top 10) will be published at you can also consult the TV Guide or catch up on the films you’ve missed on DStv Catch Up Plus.
