Mzansi Magic’s new prison series – LOCKDOWN

Posted by radio On November - 24 - 2016 ADD COMMENTS

Mzansi Magic’s breakout prison series is set to deliver maximum drama!

IT’S a local drama like no other on the small screen – tough, terse and totally gripping. This is Lockdown, Mzansi Magic’s newest and edgiest drama series to date.

34_lockdown_Set in a fictional high security female prison, this Black Brain production brings maximum drama delivered by authentic characters. Their fascinating backstories will hold you enthralled as they unravel to reveal the paths that led them into prison and behind locked gates.

The motley crew of Lockdown’s female inmates is led by the tough Ma Z (Dawn Thandeka King), a leader who wants nothing more than to gain her freedom so that she can become a good and present mother to the daughter she left on the outside. Cunning and not beyond using manipulation, she co-ops those she can – be they other inmates or wardens – to meet her end goal. One of those people happens to be the beautiful and talented Monde (Zola Nombona), a young woman who left the cocoon of her small town life to pursue fame and fortune in the dazzling lights of Egoliwood. Instead, what she got was infamy, thanks to her wily money-hungry boyfriend/producer Zakes (Luxolo Ndabeni), who introduced her to a notorious lifestyle that landed her in jail.

Ma Z’s arch rival is the tough-as-nails prison boxing champ Tyson (Lorcia Cooper), who literally fights her demons with her fists. Temperamental, intimidating and confrontational, Tyson wants to rule the prison’s other inmates with an iron fist and has her sights at dismantling any kind of hold that Ma Z has. Complete control is her ultimate prize. The often-delusional Slenda (Nomsa Buthelezi) acts as Ma Z’s lieutenant. Her gullibility and loyalty to her gang leader usually sees her being the one executing Ma Z’s bidding. The fact that she is mentally unstable and talks to her dead baby, means she should be in a psychiatric ward, but this works beautifully to her leader’s advantage.

Beauty (Slindile Nodangala) is the prison’s Governor, the head whose “tough but fair mama” façade hides a manipulative and shrewd businesswoman. She wants her prison to run smoothly and her “girls” to give her the barest of problems. You see, Beauty does not want her fiefdom to be tainted because then, her underhanded and blatantly corrupt practices might be revealed. This is why she has wardens like her son Njabulo (Mthunzi Ntoyi), an academic underachiever who desperately wants to prove his worth to his mother by finally obtaining civil engineering degree and freeing himself from her prison – in every sense of the word.

There’s also the ruthlessly ambitious warder Sharon (Lindiwe Ndlovu), who is Beauty’s right hand but secretly wants to occupy the Governor’s seat herself. She believes she can do a much better job, but her real motivation – like some of the women she guards – is ultimate power. This is a woman who will do anything to ascend the throne, believing it will fill the void she has lived with all her life.

“Lockdown is an exciting new series that will raise the bar high for South African television drama; there’s nothing like it on our screens. Mzansi Magic viewers are in for a treat because this is gripping stuff. Each episode is guaranteed to keep you on the edge of your seat and leave you craving more,” enthuses M-Net’s Head of Drama, Reneilwe Sema. “These characters are authentically South African and their stories are recognisable to many of us. Viewers will alternately love and vilify them because they will recognise someone they know, have heard of or even a little bit of themselves in the characters.”

Lockdown will premiere on Mzansi Magic (DStv Channel 161) in January 2017.

The Ranakas invade Mzanzi Magic

Posted by radio On November - 24 - 2016 ADD COMMENTS

Mzansi Magic’s new reality series, The Ranakas takes a candid look at how an authentic local family deals with the stresses of 21st century living, within an African context.

34_theranakasThe modern world has left African families in a state of flux. Every day the young generation juggle careers, parenthood, relationships, media noise, and future uncertainty; whilst the older folk try and impose longstanding, at times obsolete, traditions on them. Mzansi Magic’s new reality series, The Ranakas takes a candid look at how an authentic local family deals with the stresses of 21st century living, within an African context.

Hailed as “a glimpse into the everyday lives of an authentic African family”, The Ranakas is a spin-off of the highly successful VUZU AMP reality show Dineo’s Diary starring Dineo Ranaka, wherein viewers caught glimpses of this very animated household.

The interesting family dynamic is fueled by a mix of 7 very distinct characters:

A writer and publisher, the 70-something Kgotlaesele Ntate Ranaka is the willful, outspoken traditionalist, who is seen as the head of the family, and often tries to impose his cultural views on the kids.

Catering business owner, Mama Siba Ranaka is the wise family matriarch. Often seen as the voice of calm in the storm, she’s at times regarded as an “enabler” for bad behaviour.

Manaka Ranaka is the eldest sibling. A popular figure, known for her string of high profile drama and production roles, she’s inherited her dad’s strong-willed personality, placing an emphasis on respect. Despite her famous public profile, Manaka prefers the simple life and shies away from the media industry limelight.

Mpumi is the insightful, introvert. This gentle soul is a writer, mom and home-maker.

Television producer, media personality and mind coach, Dineo Ranaka is the versatile go-getter, struggling to balance family life with her newfound success.

Entrepreneur, Ziggy Ranaka is seen as the hustler of the family and is the eldest son. We pick up on his previously documented wedding plans from Dineo’s Diary.

Ranaka Ranaka is the family’s last born and fully embraces his youthful lifestyle. Ranaka is a highly talented creative, DJ, and event organizer. Dineo has described him as “the one who will be the most successful of all of us.”

Dineo, who has now made the transition from on-screen talent, to executive producer commented on their journey, “It’s been an incredible experience working on this production with my amazing, dynamic family. The Ranakas wear their hearts on their sleeves. We are a vibrant family made of strong characters, and I believe that the audience will form personal relationships with each character. The truest, most genuine family dynamics will be seen: from tests of loyalty, sibling rivalry, love and all its challenges, to joy and sorrow alike, the production is nothing short of incredible. I’m excited for the country to share in on our story.”

Catch The Ranakas from Thursday, 12 January at 8PM on Mzansi Magic (DStv channel 161).

Say “I Do” with M-Net

Posted by radio On November - 5 - 2016 ADD COMMENTS

New premium prime time show may showcase your upcoming wedding.

27_m_nets_wedding_show_billboardYou’ve met your match, your better half, “the one”… and now you’re planning on getting hitched. You can do what couples usually do and capture the memories of your big day with wedding photographs and your own video, or you can share this very special occasion with South Africa on prime-time television. Who wouldn’t want their wedding to feature on M-Net 101 in one of the channel’s most popular slots and also be in the running to win some fabulous prizes?

M-Net has commissioned an exciting new wedding reality show which will be screened on Sunday evenings to showcase uniquely South African weddings. Even though the name of the show and further details will be revealed at a later stage, engaged couples (over 18, of course) whose wedding bells will ring between 1 January and 31 May 2017 can now put their names forward to be considered for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

“In addition to The Voice South Africa, this new reality series will be one of the channel’s big attractions for the new year on the local productions front,” says M-Net’s Head of Publicity, Lani Lombard. “Wedding shows are currently extremely popular throughout the world and even though there are some local versions, this one will have a distinct M-Net 101 touch, as you would expect from the home of blockbuster, pioneering television.”

While many wedding shows focus on the build-up to the execution of the wedding, the M-Net 101 edition will bring a panel of well-known personalities to the event to be part of  the celebrations. They will also assess all the elements of the wedding – from the flowers to the dress, the best man’s speech, the first dance, the venue, the love in the air, and whatever it takes to create the most beautiful, unforgettable occasion. If they like what they see and experience, the couple might not only walk down the aisle, but later be rewarded with some fantastic prizes.

If you think that your wedding will have all of the ingredients to wow the special guests, all you have to do to enter is  visit www.mnet.tv/weddingshow and fill out the entry form there.

This new local M-Net series will be spearheaded by esteemed director and executive producer Gavin Wratten and Sic Entertainment, the team who has been behind top-notch productions such as Idols South Africa, Face of Africa and many of the Miss South Africa broadcasts.

According to Gavin, the show is designed to be an entertaining look at weddings and the different interpretations that couples have of key elements making up their big day. “We are planning a series that is humorous, sometimes cheeky, often unpredictable but always highly watchable. We are looking for creative brides and grooms who want to show off their style, possibly win some prizes and get some expert opinions on their arrangements. So no more will these newlyweds have to rely on the opinions of friends and family as to whether their nuptials made memorable memories or missed the mark altogether!”

Jason Greer and Vanessa Marawa are Spellbound!

Posted by radio On November - 5 - 2016 ADD COMMENTS

Two celebrities M-Net audiences will fondly remember are back on the channel as the new hosts of Spellbound, M-Net’s latest game show which is due to start on Sunday, 20 November at 17:00. Jason Greer and Vanessa Marawa are joining forces to challenge South African learners and adults alike to battle it out to see who is the greatest word whizz of them all.

27_spellbound_presenters

Vanessa Marawa was the first winner of Survivor South Africa and after spearheading the reality show The Loot on M-Net’s youth channel GO, Jason became one of the presenters of the glitzy M-Net magazine show, All Access.

While Vanessa takes on the role of quiz master in Spellbound, firing the difficult questions in the contestants’ direction, Jason introduces the contestants, the games and ensures that the show runs smoothly.

It’s been exactly a decade since Vanessa Marawa survived the harsh conditions on a desolate island in Panama and she says that being a host on Spellbound is like coming home: “I can’t believe that it was a whole ten years ago since I was on M-Net, but how fitting for me to come full circle again in the year that the channel is turning 30,” Vanessa says. Jason, who has loads of experience under his belt as he’s enjoyed years of being a presenter, host, actor, and MC in the entertainment industry, is equally delighted to join the M-Net family again. “Incidentally, Homebrew Films, the production company responsible for Spellbound, also produced All Access. So in a sense, I’m coming full circle too,” he says.

Spellbound will test contestants’ word skills in a fun and interactive way and will include super spellers from different age groups. There will be a round for primary school learners between the ages of 10 and 13, a round for high school learners between the ages of 14 and 18, and one for adults of all ages. Apart from the exhilarating thrill that comes from knowing that you’re the country’s number one letter-master in your age group, winners – and their schools – will walk away with some great prizes.

Joburg Film Festival Venues Span the City

Posted by radio On October - 25 - 2016 ADD COMMENTS

The inaugural Joburg Film Festival will kick off on Friday 28 October and run through Saturday 5 November 2016 at multiple venues across the city where over 60 South African, African and international films will be screened.

ff3

As a truly urban festival, the screenings will be taking place at a host of venues – and not just at traditional cinema chain venues. Whilst the Joburg Film Festival and its partner Ster Kinekor will host screenings at The Zone at Rosebank, Maponya Mall, and Newton Junction, additional venues across the city will also be utilized.

The Joburg Film Festival is driven by a motivation to rekindly the love of cinema by contributing to the revival of important and historic venues.

ff

Historical cinema-house The Majestic, once the crown jewel of movie culture in Fordsburg and now operating as a church, will be restored to its movie-screening glory with screenings including We’ve Never Been Kids on Oct 29th, the African American Shorts Package on Oct 30th and Clash and Mali Blues on November 5th.

Kings Cinema in Alexandra is another classic venue that will play host to Joburg Film Festival events. The cinema was built in the 1940s or 1950s (depending on who you ask) and other than natural ageing it’s hardly changed over the last 65 years. Kings Cinema is the oldest movie theatre in Alex and has 500 seats that will host guests for screenings including Love and Kwaito on November 4th.

One of the most exciting screening events of the Joburg Film Festival will take place in the courtyard of Constitution Hill on November 3rd. This evening, in partnership with The Mzansi Women’s Film Festival (MWFF), will see the screening of the classic 1966 Ousmane Sembène film Black Girl, that tells the story of a Senegalese girl working as a maid for a French couple.

Restored in honour of its 50th anniversary, the screening will be followed by a panel discussion that will deliberate the film within the context of current movements such as #FeesMustFall, #BlackGirlsOnly, and renewed consciousness relating to Sembene’s recurring themes of the empowerment of African women, colonialism and cultural imperialism.

How Well Can You Spell?

Show off your superlative word skills by entering M-Net’s Spellbound!

You can’t sing – not even in the shower. Your carefully planned delectable dishes end up being despicable disasters. You simply don’t have the stamina to survive on a deserted island; and your budding entrepreneurial skills won’t turn you into the next big business mogul. But the day spelling talent was handed out, you were in front of the queue, just behind the Oxford dictionary. Finally, it’s your time to shine on M-Net!

27_spellbound-enter-hereThis October, pioneering television network M-Net is celebrating 30 years of timeless magic. It’s also the month during which M-Net’s premium channel, M-Net 101, will be touring the country to hold auditions for the next season of The Voice SA as well as the month the channel introduced the highly entertaining new local reality show Shark Tank South Africa. But there’s more up the M-Net 101 sleeve: The channel is producing a brand-new, family-friendly game show called Spellbound, based on the concept of a spelling bee, and is looking for word whizzes who could become the country’s English spelling and grammar champions.

Spellbound will test contestants’ word skills in a fun and interactive way and will include super spellers from different age groups. There will be a round for primary school learners between the ages of 10 and 13, a round for high school learners between the ages of 14 and 18, and one for adults of all ages, as long as they’re over 18 and are South African citizens or permanent residents. The learners must currently be attending school in South Africa and must have the permission of their parents or legal guardians to take part in the show.

Apart from the exhilarating thrill that comes from knowing that you’re the country’s number one letter-master in your age group, winners – and their schools – will walk away with cash prizes.

Entries for Spellbound have opened on M-Net’s official website and will close on Monday, 31 October at 23:59. To be invited to show off your superlative English spelling and grammar skills on the Spellbound set, the first step is to complete the questionnaire and online test here.

Interestingly, according to Internet quizzes, “questionnaire” often makes the list of most commonly misspelt (or is it misspelled?) words in the English language. And it’s embarrassing (correct spelling) how often spell-checkers have to correct words such as “appearance”, “queue”, “receive”, “mischievous” and “accommodate”. If you never get these examples wrong and find yourself annoyed when the greengrocer wants to sell you potatoes with an apostrophe, you’re indeed the ideal candidate for Spellbound!

Spellbound is a wonderful local addition to our M-Net 101 schedule,” says Jan du Plessis, Director: M-Net Channels. “Spelling bees have become all the rage across the world and while the contestants will be giving it a go on television, the entire family at home can test their own skills and brush up on their grammar. It’s education wrapped in great fun.”

Spellbound is produced for M-Net by Homebrew Films and will be screened on M-Net 101 on Sundays at 17:00 from 20 November 2016.

DStv announces new Explora & HD channels

Posted by radio On September - 27 - 2016 ADD COMMENTS

MultiChoice is on a drive to offer their customers an ever-evolving and enhanced DStv experience. At a media briefing, held today at their Randburg offices, CEO Mark Rayner said, ‘We’re making additional channels available in HD, streamlining packages to deliver more fresh entertainment daily and extending our Catch Up Plus catalogue to over 1 000 movies. We’re actively managing the DStv service to ensure our customers get the most value for money.’

 newexplora_original

Satellite launch

On 24 August, MultiChoice launched a new satellite, IS36, which will provide additional capacity. This means MultiChoice can start offering additional services. The new satellite will also act as a back-up to the existing IS20 satellite.

DStv channel changes

During the month of October and November, certain DStv packages will undergo changes and customers will get more channels in crystal clear HD. It’s all part of a process aimed at refining channel offerings based on customer feedback and viewing behaviour.

9 DStv channels will change to HD

These will include some of the best loved M-Net channels such as M-Net Movies All Stars, M-Net Family, VUZU, Mzansi Wethu and kykNET & Kie as well as certain international favourites such as BBC First, HISTORY, Crime & Investigation and Food Network.

More channels will be added to other DStv packages

DStv Extra customers will get ITV Choice HD and Lifetime, DStv Family customers will pick up M-Net Movies Stars HD, while DStv EasyView customers will receive Jim Jam and Mzansi Music.

DStv Extra customers will also be able to enjoy the specialist language channels: RAI, BVN, RTPI, TV5 Monde and Deutsche Welle

The following channels will stop airing from end of October: CBS Action and Drama, AMC and True Movies.

General Manager for Content, Aletta Alberts, explained the rationale behind these changes. ‘Our focus is to bring our customers the best entertainment possible. We do research every month to understand what they’re watching and what they’d like to watch. This research helped us identify some channels that weren’t popular or that had the same content as other existing channels.

‘We also use this research to understand what we can do to improve the channels we have. This year alone, we’ve enhanced the offering on a number of channels – M-Net Movie Channels, M-Net City and M-Net Family, ITV Choice, FOX Entertainment, VIA, Discovery Family and Discovery IDx to name but a few. This means our customers will be seeing fresher content on a more regular basis.’

New DStv Explora launched

Our flagship Explora decoder has significantly enhanced the viewing experience for our customers. In a world where connected television services are becoming more commonplace, the Explora enables customers to connect their decoders and get access to an extended catalogue of content on DStv Catch Up Plus and ShowMax.

We want to give more of our customers the Explora experience without having to worry about expensive data costs. So we created a decoder with the same features and services as our current Explora, with a streamlined hard drive to keep it affordable.

Nyiko Shiburi, Group General Manager for Broadcast Technology, said ‘Our new Explora uses the latest video compression technology, which means our customers will in future spend less on data when they connect their new Explora to the internet.’

The new Explora has the same extensive Catch Up service, the ability to rent up to 30 BoxOffice movies and internet connectivity for Catch Up Plus, Remote Recording and ShowMax. This extensive content catalogue means our customers are recording less on their Exploras, which is why we’ve made the hard drive smaller to keep the decoder affordable. Customers can record up to 80 hours of HD content on their personal playlist (current Explora has 150 hours of HD recordings).

‘We believe the sheer volume of content available on our Catch Up, Catch Up Plus and ShowMax services, offers our customers an unparalleled entertainment experience. And the streamlined version means we can continue to offer all our customers the chance to own an Explora at an affordable price, despite our weakened Rand,’ continued Nyiko.

The new Explora gets a new A7 remote control, which incorporates features that customers have asked for. These include backlit buttons, which enables users to see it in the dark, the ability to easily program it as a universal remote for your TV and music system, and a ShowMax button for one-touch access.

Nyiko confirmed, ‘The Explora is our flagship decoder and we’ll continue to enhance it with further developments for many years to come.’

The new DStv Explora will retail at R1 499 and this price will be fixed until the end of 2017. Click here for offer options for the new DStv Explora you can look forward to.
