Iflix secures additional funding

Posted by radio On August - 12 - 2017 ADD COMMENTS

Iflix, the world’s leading Subscription Video on Demand (SVoD) service for emerging markets, recently announced it has completed a $133 million funding round as it continues to deliver on its vision of bringing the world’s best entertainment to its audiences.

The funding round, which attracted significant interest from both new investors and existing shareholders, was led by Hearst, one of America’s largest diversified media, information and services companies, and also included additional new investors Singapore-based EDBI and clients of DBS private bank. Existing shareholders Evolution Media, Sky PLC, Catcha Group, Liberty Global, Jungle Ventures and PLDT Inc. also increased their investments.

Since going live in May 2015, iflix rapidly established a clear leadership position in emerging markets, setting a new standard for delivering a world-class streaming entertainment service, passionately focused on local customer experiences. Over the last 12 months, the service has seen extraordinary growth across all segments of the business, expanding from four markets to 19 across Asia, the Middle East and Africa. The company has additionally built deep integrated distribution partnerships with 27 leading telecommunications operators to bundle the iflix service with customers’ mobile and data subscriptions, all sponsored by the telecommunications provider.

During the period, iflix also achieved tremendous growth across subscriber numbers and engagement by 3x and 2x respectively, and recorded some of the highest average active mobile viewing durations of any service in the world at 2.5-2.75 hours per session. The company saw 230 percent growth in year on year revenue, and increased its commitment to localization, producing 26,000 hours of subtitles in nine languages, with locally-curated content in every market. iflix’s full content library showcases thousands of award-winning and iconic first run programs and library content from over 230 studio partners from 30 countries.

The new round brings total funding raised by iflix this calendar year to an excess of $220 million. Proceeds from the round will be used to invest in its local content strategy. iflix recently unveiled its first exclusive original production, Oi Jaga Mulut, an audacious, uncensored, no holds barred stand-up comedy series, which since debuting in Malaysia last week, has skyrocketed to the leading show on the service. Partnering with TVOne, iflix also launched live premiere football streaming, available for the first time in Indonesia, which immediately became one of the highest performing shows there with more than 34,000 unique viewers tuning in the first week of airing.

Last week, iflix Philippines announced its collaboration with the Philippines’ Queen of All Media, Kris Aquino, to commission an original drama series. iflix Co-founder and Group CEO Mark Britt said: “We are thrilled to welcome Hearst

President and CEO Steven Swartz and Hearst Entertainment & Syndication President Neeraj Khemlani to the iflix family. As iflix continues to grow and pioneer new ways for consumers to enjoy entertainment on their terms, we were looking for a partner who could bring additional expertise and knowledge to our business. Hearst is a leading investor and has many of the world’s most innovative and iconic video brands, including ESPN, A+E Networks, Vice, AwesomenessTV, Complex and more.

This collaboration significantly deepens our bench of experts with our longstanding partners Evolution Media, Sky and Liberty Global to help drive iflix’s continuing growth.”

“From the beginning, our vision for iflix has been to build a word-class service for the local customer, transforming the way everyday consumers enjoy entertainment in emerging markets. These new funds will allow us to further execute on our local content strategy and expand our technology and development teams so we can continue to rapidly evolve the iflix service to meet the unique challenges of emerging markets,” continued Britt.

President of Hearst Entertainment & Syndication Neeraj Khemlani said: “iflix is riding the wave of exponential growth of the middle class in emerging markets that want more access to premium regional, local and Western content. We look forward to working with our new partners Sky, Liberty Global, Evolution Media and Catcha Group, as well as emerging market telcos, to support iflix’s innovative founders and management team in their rapid expansion plans.”

Founding shareholders Evolution Media and Catcha Group have participated in all preceding capital raisings and further increased their support this round. Evolution Media Founder and Co-Managing Partner Rick Hess said: “As a founding partner of iflix, Evolution Media, along with Catcha Group and Mark, were inspired by the opportunity to reach the ‘next’ 1bn consumers. The phenomenal growth of iflix has  challenged many of the preconceptions we have in Hollywood about how entertainment is consumed in emerging markets around the world. It’s fascinating to see iflix learn, scale and forge this new path.”

Catcha Group Co-founder and Group CEO Patrick Grove commented: “Today marks the next step in our journey in creating a category defining company that revolutionizes the way people in emerging markets consume and enjoy content. Since launching in May 2015, iflix has consistently delivered an exceptionally high-value service with strong, unparalleled focus on customer experience.” iflix was advised by Moelis & Company LLC, Delta Partners and Herbert Smith Freehills on the transaction.

Netflix Acquires Millarworld

Posted by radio On August - 9 - 2017 ADD COMMENTS

Comics Legend Mark Millar Joins Forces With the Leading Global Internet Entertainment Platform to Blow Minds Everywhere.

Netflix Inc. announced  it acquired Millarworld, the comic book publishing powerhouse founded by Mark Millar, the legendary creator of such iconic characters and stories as Kick-Ass, Kingsman, and Old Man Logan, and one of the most important voices in comics.

Together, Netflix and Millar will bring Millarworld’s portfolio of critically and fan-acclaimed character franchises to life through films, series and kids’ shows available exclusively to Netflix members globally. Millarworld will also continue to create and publish new stories and character franchises under the Netflix label.

The acquisition, the first ever by Netflix, is a natural progression in the company’s effort to work directly with prolific and skilled creators and to acquire intellectual property and ownership of stories featuring compelling characters and timeless, interwoven fictional worlds. Terms of the transaction weren’t disclosed.

“As creator and re-inventor of some of the most memorable stories and characters in recent history, ranging from Marvel’s The Avengers to Millarworld’s Kick-Ass, Kingsman, Wanted and Reborn franchises, Mark is as close as you can get to a modern day Stan Lee,” said Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos. “We can’t wait to harness the creative power of Millarworld to Netflix and start a new era in global storytelling.”

“This is only the third time in history a major comic book company has been purchased at this level,” said Millar. “I’m so in love with what Netflix is doing and excited by their plans. Netflix is the future and Millarworld couldn’t have a better home.”

Millar, who runs Millarworld with his wife Lucy Millar, is one of the most consistent hitmakers in the graphic novel and comics world. In his eight years at Marvel, he developed the comic books and story arcs that inspired the first Avengers movie, Captain America: Civil War, and Logan (Wolverine), which collectively grossed over $3 billion in worldwide box office. Since Millarworld was started, the company and its co-creators have given birth to eighteen published character worlds, of which three, Wanted, Kick-Ass and Kingsman, have yielded theatrical films that together have grossed nearly $1 billion in global box office.

“Mark has created a next-generation comics universe, full of indelible characters living in situations people around the world can identify easily with,” added Sarandos. “We look forward to creating new Netflix Originals from several existing franchises as well as new super-hero, anti-hero, fantasy, sci-fi and horror stories Mark and his team will continue to create and publish.”

In August AfriDocs celebrates the spirit of women- through stories both large and small. The role of African women in civic and political spaces has never been easy, and AfriDocs is proud to share films that bring to life the everyday struggles and successes of brave women who are standing up for their own rights, as well as the rights of others.

A not-to-be-missed highlight for August is Strike a Rock, is a counterpoint to Rehad Desai’s Miners Shot Down. This 2017 film tells the story of two South African mothers, Primrose Sonti and Thumeka Magwangqana, who lead their community in a fight against seemingly insurmountable odds for equality, justice and dignity.

The film recently won the Audience Award, Best Local Film, Encounters Documentary Festival in South Africa.

Director Aliki Saragas has this to say about the film:

Leading up to the 5th anniversary of the Marikana Massacre, we will never forget that justice has been delayed and denied. Not only for the families of those who were killed and the injured and arrested mineworkers but also for the community that lives around Lonmin Plc. Our hope is that our documentary, Strike A Rock, will put the women of Marikana’s struggle on the world stage.

My aim was to weave together the perspectives of the women using a sensitive, unobtrusive and intimate camera. The film takes the viewer on a journey through trauma, history, loss, memory, friendship, and the fear of being further forgotten as Thumeka and Primrose survive each day.

At the same time, we are confronted with a very real obstruction of justice and lack of accountability on the side of Lonmin, who shirk their legal obligations to the community, and the South African government, who in turn neglect to ensure that the required socio-economic development takes place. In this context, the personal becomes the political and that is where the impact of the film lies.

After over three years of creating this documentary the journey is only really beginning now as we use the film to build on a movement focusing on extractive practices and their socio-economic and environmental impacts in South Africa and Southern Africa regionally.

Screened at over 120 film festivals world-wide and winner of the Prix Artet Essai at the Cannes Film Festival, Sisters in Law has become an African classic. A cross between “Judge Judy” and “TheNo.1 Ladies’ Detective Agency,” Sisters in Law has audiences cheering when justice is served.

Between Rings is the story of Zambia’s Esther Phiri, the seven-time world boxing champion. Hers is a remarkable story, Esther lived with her grandmother and joined her selling groceries and second hand clothes in the market. She dropped out of school and became a single mother at age 16. But a turning point in Esther’s life came about when the international NGO Africa Directions started a youth-centered HIV-awareness project in the area, combining health education and sport. Esther was the only girl in a physical training program that focused on boxing.

AfriDocs can be seen every SUNDAY at 10pm (CAT) on BET Africa, DStv channel 129.

Strike a Rock |Aliki Saragas | South Africa, 2017 | 87 min

A counterpoint to Rehad Desai’s Miners Shot Down, this provides, not just a history of oppression, police violence, sanitised corporate indifference and lies that made Marikana inevitable, but also a view of the rebirth of politics in the shadow of the Lonmin mine. By foregrounding the political career of Primrose Sonti and the activism of Thumake Magwangqana in particular, this creates a strange sense of optimism in the face of a terrible crime, while damning the exploitation and collusion between the mining houses and the ANC. A fascinating document of SA’s long overdue political maturation.

The DStv Mzansi Viewer’s Choice Awards recently launched and with it, headline sponsor – 1Life, launched a socially influential award category; The 1Life Life Changer Award! This award is in a class of its own – aimed at encouraging all South Africa’s doting celebrity fans to not only vote for the who’s who, but to vote for someone in their community who is socially influential and really changing lives through their commitment to those less fortunate.

“We are very proud to be the headline sponsor for the DStv Mzansi Viewer’s Choice Awards, where developing and recognising local talent – whether in business, on the sports field, or in the performing arts – is not only empowering and uplifting, but certainly, life changing,” says Laurence Hillman, MD at 1Life.

“This sponsorship really holds true to our mantra of Changing Lives, and I believe that the addition of the 1Life Life Changer Award generates an even stronger alignment to this concept, as it provides an excellent opportunity for South African’s to be the voice of the people, to nominate someone who they believe is truly socially influential in the community – someone who is significantly changing lives,” continues Hillman.

The 1Life Life Changer Award will allow viewers to nominate everyday people from their communities, anywhere in South Africa. Nominees will then be short listed where a panel of judges, including representatives from DSTV, Mzansi Magic and 1Life, will decide on the most deserving nominees.

The winner will be selected based on their social impact in the community, their continued motivation for the sustainable management of their projects and the positive/long lasting effect of these projects on the communities in which they operate. The winners, as well as their nominator, will win a cash prize of R50 000 each.

“There is no doubt that people working in their communities are short-funded, struggling to keep up with day to day demands and merely need a helping hand to continue to do the great work they are doing. This award empowers consumers to be part of the change, to choose these winners for themselves and to identify someone who not only needs the funding but deserves the recognition for their commitment to changing the lives of those around them,” says Hillman.

“We look forward to the upcoming weeks of ongoing nominations and encourage all South African’s to get involved by voting, not only for the nominees but very importantly, to give back by nominating those people in their communities that are truly change agents!” concludes Hillman.

DStv Delicious is Proudly SA

Posted by radio On July - 12 - 2017 ADD COMMENTS

For the first time, an event has become a member company of the Proudly South African buy local campaign. It might have ‘International’ in its name, but the DStv Delicious International Food & Music Festival is Proudly South African.

The Festival will be held once again this year at the Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit on Friday 7 and Saturday 8 October. Whilst some of the acts are from overseas, and the food offering represents many different countries’ cuisines, the Festival features many established as well as up-and-coming local artists and the concept and production of the event is entirely home-grown.

“When we approached Proudly South African earlier this year to become partners, they automatically assumed that our Festival was an international model that had been imported into South Africa,” said Lloyd Cornwall, Festival Director. “When they realised that the Festival has its roots firmly in South Africa, then we were able to start talking,” he added.

“In addition to the event providing 2 days of family entertainment, the business end of the Festival is what impressed us as a campaign,” said Proudly South African CEO, Eustace Mashimbye.  “The event represents millions of Rands in local procurement and is a significant creator of jobs both directly and indirectly which is exactly the key message we preach – buy local to create jobs. The DStv Delicious Festival team is living this message.”

Already committed to sourcing as many local products and services that it takes to put on a multi-million Rand event, for this year’s edition of DStv Delicious, the organisers have worked their way through Proudly South African’s database of members to procure as much as they can from those companies that are part of and support the buy local campaign.

From security services to a travel agent to put festival packages together, from printers to toilet roll suppliers, they are able to keep their spend almost 100% local. Their overall needs are vast from legal services, safety and security, marquees and tents, sound and structural engineers and set builders, cleaning and waste management services, uniforms, standby medical services, astro turf, hostesses and runners, amongst much else.

Said Chief Officer Marketing & Communications at ProudlySA, Happy MaKhumalo Ngidi, “I have been attending DStv Delicious since its inception and have always loved it, but had no idea of its origins. The passion with which it is put together and the commitment of the team not only to put on an amazing event, but to make a difference to the city and province in which it is staged, is very meaningful for Proudly South African.”

In addition to what they have sourced for themselves, the DStv Delicious International Food & Music Festival will generate revenue for local hotels, guest houses and transport companies. Forty percent of the gourmet market traders are local SMMEs, who will benefit from the exposure to 40 000 visitors, whose average spend is R2 000.

“The job creation figures are also staggering,” said Mashimbye. “When we looked at last year’s numbers, we saw that there were 900 crew members working for 10 days, with an additional 3 500 workers taken on for the duration of the festival. We believe that this event has an impact on SMMEs, the Gauteng economy and jobs that goes far beyond the two days that the general public experiences. It is a perfect fit with our campaign and we look forward to working with the DStv Delicious team this year and beyond.”

Proudly South African will have a dedicated food village at the Festival featuring a number of its members each offering something unique and of course, delicious.

Diski Divas are back on Mzansi

Posted by radio On July - 5 - 2017 ADD COMMENTS

Diski Divas season three promises to raise as many perfectly-arched eyebrows as the previous seasons.

From high-end glamorous lives and their private antics, to their men’s prowess on and off the soccer pitch, there’s never a shortage of drama with the wives, girlfriends and exes of Mzansi’s soccer stars.

Diski Divas season three promises to raise as many perfectly-arched eyebrows as the previous seasons. The new season will take a look at the full circle life of a Diski Diva; those who are young and desperate to enter the world, those who have married into the club and want to hold on at all costs, and those who have been there and want out!

The reality show has become a revolving door of the stylish women in the lives of soccer players – and this season viewers will see three new power players in heels.

Joining the squad is Sibongile Masuku, married to Bloemfontein Celtic player, Khethokwakhe Masuku. A home-maker and a mother of two, let’s see what lies beneath her feisty demeanour.

Followed by the “new kids on the block”, Thato “DJ Heels” Makgaka, 23, and her bestie Chabii Motaung, 21. Thato takes us into her world as a club DJ with a dream to take over the music industry. So how did she go from perfect stranger to a diva and more? Meanwhile, her buddy Chabii, is #livingherbestlife as the “fiancé” to another baller. Follow the trails of Diski Divas 3 to find out who.

Returning stronger and more confident is Kea Ntshole, just as her retired defender partner, Mbuyiselo Sambu, takes up a new position as Assistant Coach of Chippa United. Will they finally take their relationship to the next level?

Another returnee is Thandeka Nhleko, former wife to retired Kaiser Chiefs striker Nkosinathi Nhleko. Knowing how cliquey the WAG world is, there’s a big question mark about what she is bringing to the table this time around.

There’s never a dull moment in the lives of these soccer- babes. Get ready to witness what it takes to live in this high stakes world – the drama, the back-stabbing, the fear of losing it all in one quick move.

Diski Divas will premiere Wednesday, 12 July 2017 at 20:00 on Mzansi Magic (DStv Channel 161).

Issues of identity are in the spotlight in July, with AfriDocs screening a compelling range of films that look at the journeys that define us. These films look at how race, language, immigration, adoption, and land all influence identity for Africans on the continent and in the diaspora.

Shashamane is the story of an actual journey, that of a community of people of African heritage who have returned to Ethiopia. Their exodus is chronicled through their own voices in this powerful film.

Little White Lie is a story of race and identity and how our past and heritage are always part of us. The story of Lacey Schwartz’s journey towards finding her own identity and heritage makes for compelling viewing.

Similarly, Mercy Mercy takes a harsh look at the world of international adoption, following the plight of Ethiopian orphans Masho and her little brother Roba.  The film looks at the realities and issues of identity that can plague these kinds of international adoptions.

Land and identity are intrinsically linked.  This Land, fresh from the Durban International Film Festival, looks at this critical issue through the events taking place in Makhasaneni, South Africa where a small community moved here by the apartheid government, now have their homes under threat again, this time by a mining company in cahoots with the Entembeni Zulu Royal Family.

AfriDocs can be seen every Thursday 9:00/ 21:00 (CAT) on BET Africa, DStv channel 129.

It’s an Exodus that for some has become a haven, but for others a cage with no escape. “Shashamane” chronicles a chapter in the lengthy history of the African diaspora through the voices of men and women who have left the West 400 years after the dawn of the African slave trade, to seek their promised land.

A personal doc about race, identity and the legacy of family secrets and denial

Lacey Schwartz grew up convinced she was white. She has copper skin, black curls, and full lips – features which distinguish her instantly from her pale Jewish parents. Throughout her childhood her differences set her apart. But it wasn’t until she was 18 that she learned the truth: her real father was black. Eight years in the making and put together by Lacey herself, Little White Lie tells the compelling story of an uncomfortable, unacknowledged truth.

Mercy Mercy | Katrine Riis Kjær | Ethiopia, Denmark | 2012 | 94 min

At first sight, adoption seems like a win-win situation: a poor orphan gets some loving parents and a good life. But the world of adoption is a question of supply and demand, with Ethiopia as a chief supplier of thousands of needy children. The fact that the well-being of the child is not always top priority becomes painfully clear in this tragic story about Masho and her little brother Roba.

This Land | Miki Redelinghuys | South Africa | 2017 | 48 min

In Makhasaneni, a hamlet in rural KwaZulu-Natal, scores of villagers are under threat of forced removal for the second time in as many generations. Forcibly moved here by the apartheid government, now their homes are under threat by a mining company in cahoots with the Entembeni Zulu Royal Family, and who seek to exploit the land over the heads of the people who live and work on it. An eloquent portrait of the activists and residents of Makhasaneni, This Land is also a brave and necessary exposé of the inadequacy of customary law in a predatory capitalist state. It raises the question, “Is monarchy compatible with democratic land reform?”

Tumi Morake & Eric Omondi on Boomerang

Posted by radio On July - 3 - 2017 ADD COMMENTS

Hilarious duo Tumi Morake and Eric Omondi transform themselves into the loveable animals we all know and love.

South Africa’s leading female comedian and radio personality Tumi Morake and renowned Kenyan comedian Eric Omondi have teamed up with Boomerang to launch a brand new, exciting comedic series that promises to have audiences across Africa roaring with laughter!

From cheeky monkeys, to lazy wallowing seals, to greedy warthogs, to romantic cheetahs, Boomerang’s The Safari Comedy Show will shed light on the daily lives of some of Africa’s most humorous animals, like you have never seen before.

The series of one-minute short scripted comedies, where real wild animals will be dubbed by local African talents, is based on the simple concept of “if animals could talk what would they say?” Here on the Safari Comedy Show, anything is possible. Not only can the animals rap, dance and talk like humans, but they can play games on their mobile phones too, in fact these animals are not so different from humans at all. From playing with their friends, to fighting with their siblings you will learn that there is an animal in Africa, just like you!

“We here at Boomerang are so excited about The Safari Comedy Show. This is the first local Boomerang original and illustrates our willingness to create locally relevant series’, using familiar voices to our audiences from across Africa”, says Pierre Branco, VP and Managing Director of Turner Africa. “We (brands) are all competing for the attention of our young audience across Africa, which is why we have invested so much time, energy and effort into creating unique, exciting content.

Thanks to the quality of our shows and strong brand proposition, confirmed by being voted having the Coolest Cartoon Show for the third year in a row in the latest Generation Next Survey, we are even more adamant to invest in our shows in order to make them even more relevant to our local audiences, than ever before. Localisation is how we aim to break through the clutter in order to connect, engage and reside in the hearts and minds of our young audience and their families from across the continent.”

Tumi Morake says: “I have never really seen anything quite like The Safari Comedy Show before. The show is so different, unique and unexpected which makes the show very disruptive in a good way. The disruptive nature of The Safari Comedy Show is not only exciting but engaging too. The show definitely gives us a glimpse of what life could be like if we were wild animals in Africa!”

Eric Omondi says: “Comedy is my passion – there is nothing I love more than making people smile and laugh. When Boomerang approached me to do The Safari Comedy Show, I was so excited to get the opportunity to make hundreds and thousands of kids, and their parents, from across Africa roar with laughter. I mean what an honour!”

Don’t forget to tune-in to Boomerang this month on 17 July 2017 to hear Eric Omondi and Tumi Morake transform themselves into the loveable animals we all know and love (well at least, so we thought).
