Posted by radio On November - 25 - 2014 ADD COMMENTS

AfriDocs is proud to present the second in its series of AfriDocs Film Weeks from Dec 2 – 9th to coincide with the United Nations Framework on Climate Change COP meeting in Lima, Peru.

During this week some of the world’s best environmental films will be screened across sub-Saharan Africa on DStv channel ED (channel 190) and GOtv (channel 65).

These documentary films from across the globe bring the global discussions between countries back down to the human level – sharing stories of how climate change is already affecting some of the world’s most vulnerable peoples.

From India and Kenya to the Pacific Islands and the USA, these films share stories of communities trying to overcome the very real challenges presented by environmental processes that have already started to affect their ways of life.

A series of short films produced for the Action4Climate challenge will also be screened during the week. The Action4Climate competition challenged filmmakers to raise awareness of climate change, share experiences and inspire action by creating a video documentary.

The response was overwhelming with more than 230 videos from 70 countries were submitted, bringing to life the serious consequences of climate change across the world and highlighting the actions taken by local communities to tackle it.

The three Action4Climate competition winning short films to be screened are:

The Tail of a Trail: The 1st place winner of the competition, this film from Portugal is a letter from the future is written to our recent past, telling us how the world ´it turned out right´. It follows the trail of someone that left words written, words of change, of simple change. In this near future, the images of our world are the same, but the value of words can be very different.

Global Warning: This 2nd place winning film from Bulgaria and the Philippines is a A documentary about the super typhoon Yolanda – Haiyan which hit the Philippines on Nov 8th 2013.

Snows of the Nile: 3rd place place winning film from USA & Uganda. Uganda’s Rwenzori Mountains rise 5000m from the heart of Africa. At their summits are some of Earth’s only equatorial glaciers. But these “Mountains of the Moon,” whose existence caused a sensation in Europe when they were first climbed in 1906, are changing fast.

The 2014 winners of the CNBC Africa All Africa Business Leaders Awards Presented by Johnnie Walker Blue Label (AABLAs) were announced at the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg on, Friday, 14 November.

Young Business Leaders & Entrepreneur of the Year

In a process that began over two months ago, with regional finals in West, East and Southern Africa, the pioneering and innovative business leaders of Africa in their respective fields were finally whittled down to just five game-changing individuals.

“With the continent hosting eight of the world’s fastest growing economies, Africa is internationally perceived as the next great business frontier which is both exciting and inspiring,” says Jeff Milliken, Director of brandhouse.

“As such, in the AABLAs, it has been both rewarding and heartening to survey Africa’s corporate landscape and discover so many exceptional men and women who are making their indelible contribution toward the progress of the continent into a globally competitive entity with a strong internal business sector.”

The ceremony presented the coveted title of Young Business Leader of the Year jointly to Group CEOs of South Africa’s leading activations agency, The Creative Counsel, Gil Oved and Ran Neu-Ner. The two were recognised for using their collective charisma and entrepreneurial spirit to build the company into the top-ranking Marketing, Media and Advertising group in the country.

For his sustained success and bold contribution to solutions-based business and IT strategies across multiple platforms for companies of varying sizes, Asher Bohbot (South Africa), CEO of Enterprise Outsourcing Holdings (EOH) Limited, was named Business Leader of the Year.

The prestigious accolade of Entrepreneur of the Year went to Executive Chairman of JSE-listed brokerage, Brimstone Investment Corporation, Fred Robertson (South Africa). Robertson was honoured for his demonstrated leadership on both the national and international business stages and, in particular, through his directorship and co-founding of numerous leading of Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) companies.

Founder of Keroche Breweries, the first ever brewery to be owned by a Kenyan, Tabitha Karanja, was singled out as Business Woman of the Year.

The award recognised her unfailing resilience and matchless business sagacity over nearly two decades in growing a company that now employs over 300 people and gives back to the community by educating the country’s youth.

Finally, the special honour of the Lifetime Achievement Award was bestowed upon Tanzanian pioneer of corporate social responsibility, Dr Reginald Mengi, CEO of IPP Limited, for his commendable contributions to worthy causes for positive change in underprivileged communities, education, health and environmental conservation.

“With individuals of such extraordinary calibre at the helm of the progress of the African business world, there is no doubt that the state of the continent’s economy and corporate sector are in safe hands as it continues to grow from strength to strength,” adds Jeff Milliken.

The CNBC Africa All Africa Business Leaders Awards Presented by Johnnie Walker Blue Label now looks ahead to 2015, anticipating the emergence of new industry leaders and the continued success of business stalwarts on the continent.

Vinny’s House gets summer sizzling

Posted by radio On November - 15 - 2014 ADD COMMENTS

Are you looking for the perfect soundtrack to warm up your festive season? Then tune into Mzansi Magic Music on DStv Channel 321 every Saturday for a blast of sizzling hot music from the legendary Vinny Da Vinci.

Vinny’s House kicks off on Saturday, 15 November 2014 at 19:00 – and puts one of South Africa’s most loved DJs and producers in the heart of homes across the country as they celebrate the best season of the year!

With parties and get-togethers being the order-of-the-day, Vinny will be offering up a head-spinning music mix each Saturday that’s perfectly brewed for summertime.

The iconic mixmaster won’t be alone in bringing the party into South African homes: each week Vinny’s House will feature a special guest star to keep the beats rolling. Among those destined to step into Vinny’s House are DJ Ganyani, Tim White, Ralf Gum, Julian Gomez, Christos and Mbuso – in short, the who’s who of Mzansi House music, both legends and newcomers!

“Vinny’s House is the first of its kind on Mzansi Magic Music. This show is guaranteed to attract house heads, focusing on the technical art of DJing with one of the masters at work. We intend to take viewers on an exciting ride where they will have access to exclusive Deep House song selections,” says Nkateko Mabaso, Director of Local Interest Channels at M-Net.

Vinny himself needs no introduction to devoted House music fans. He is considered one of the most established figures on the South African dance music scene and has galvanised deep club culture over two decades. His influence has not just been as a DJ – although he’s revered by fans and peers for his ability on the ones and twos, a skill that was honed in the 1990s. Vinny is also one of the original music entrepreneurs. Through his partnership in the House Afrika empire, Vinny has overseen many top-selling compilations, including the House Afrika: Deep House Sounds and Africanism series, all of which he compiled and mixed.

As a producer he’s broken ground with the DJs At Work project alongside longtime friend, DJ Christos. Together they have released five critically acclaimed, platinum-selling studio albums and a slew of top-notch deejay mixes.

“Vinny’s house has been a long timing coming and I know SA is ready for it. Big up to Mzansi Magic Music for having the vision to launch it, and to all my longstanding DJ friends and House Afrika family for supporting me. Viewers are in for a real treat,” says Vinny Da Vinci.

Vinny continues to specialise in his signature deep house style, breaking new music and educating his audience. He has deejayed with several of his international peers visiting South Africa – including “Little Louie” Vega, Frankie Knuckles, Dennis Ferrer, Charles Webster and Jazzy Jeff – and now he’s getting ready to DJ for Mzansi Magic Music viewers. Summer will never be the same again!

South African Ndoni Khanyile is set to appear on over 270 million TV screens in more than 140 countries this November, when she makes her debut on Al Jazeera English as the presenter of Innovate Africa.

The new six-part series travels across Africa to meet the entrepreneurs and innovators who are using technology to change their lives and the futures of those around them.

Produced from Cape Town, Innovate Africa has already taken Ndoni to France, Ghana, Kenya, and Rwanda. She’s met children learning to build robots in Ghana from age five, as well as children in Kenya learning to code from age six. She’s learnt about advances in space satellite technology; discovered 3D printers made from recycled waste; and watched students learn in solar-powered classrooms. She visited multi-million dollar projects like the World Agroforesty Centre in Nairobi, where they’re sequencing the genomes of traditional African food crops, as well as students working to support their communities on a very small scale, with almost no money at all.

“The internet is a really democratic medium,” says Ndoni, who presents the show with well-known radio personality Tapfuma Makina, who is also a Biotechnology graduate. “Because of the access the web gives you, whether you are a student or a multinational, anyone with an idea can have an impact. Africa Innovates isn’t just about the tech; it’s about the innovative thinking that uses technology as a tool for problem-solving on a young continent that is on the move.”

Ndoni will be familiar to African viewers as the host of eNCA’s premier technology show Tech Report from 2011 to 2013. She also starred in films like Skeem and Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom; and alongside John Kani in the Sean Mathias play Antigone, among other roles.

Ndoni studied Theatre and Performance at the University of Cape Town, before receiving a Masters degree in Broadcast Journalism from Columbia University, which she attended as the recipient of a Fulbright Scholarship and the William and Ceil Africa Pulitzer Fellowship.

As a founding member of the poetry performance group Rite 2 Speak, Ndoni has performed original music and poetry in London, Switzerland and Portugal. She’s also a columnist and editor-at-large for Essence of Africa, a new women’s magazine that launches in November 2014.

BootCamp, celebrity style

Posted by radio On November - 8 - 2014 ADD COMMENTS

Mzansi Magic’s BootCamp is getting a transformation of its own when it returns for a new season in January 2015.

In Season 3, the popular weight-loss show will be known as BootCamp Mzansi – Celebrity Edition, with the 12 contestants now facing the challenges and workouts set by a cast of handpicked celebrity trainers.

With their names still under-wraps, the new BootCamp trainers are being drawn primarily from the world of entertainment and sport – with a few surprise trainers also set to make their presence felt on the popular show!

As with the previous Season 1 and 2 headed by Kabelo Mabalane, BootCamp Mzansi will see a dozen South Africans learn to take charge of their bodies, minds and ultimately their lives, boot camp style. This time around, the emphasis will be on the individual journey of the contestants as they attempt a transformation in their lives, with all the blood, sweat, tears and joy that accompanies it.

“We are shaking things up a little on BootCamp with the next season,” explains Nkateko Mabaso, M-Net’s Director for Local Interest Channels.

“There are many homegrown celebrities who are also role models for healthy and active living – and we will be drawing on their insights, experience and unique stories for our bootcampers. We know from our first two seasons that our viewers also get inspired to get fit and healthy when they watch BootCamp and we are sure that Season 3 will once again positively impact the lives of ordinary South Africans.”

The contestants will live in the BootCamp Mzansi house for 11 weeks. During each week, a celebrity trainer will enter the house to take the bootcampers through a morning workout, an afternoon workout, a challenge and, then, an elimination. The contestant who loses the least amount of weight and displays the least amount of determination after every week of challenges is eliminated.

The emphasis is on empowering contestants to face their personal life challenges with conviction, knowledge and courage, especially when they leave the BootCamp house for good.

The celebrity trainer’s role would be to ensure that the contestants walk away with the tools to effect a holistic transformation on themselves, even if they leave the BootCamp house during the early elimination rounds

The winner of Season 3 will join previous season winners Thabo Mboya (Season 1) and Thapelo Mabusweni (Season 2).

BootCamp Mzansi – Celebrity Edition, debuts in January 2015 on Mzansi Magic Channel DStv, Channel 161.
