Showmax on Apple TV and Chromecast

Posted by radio On March - 31 - 2017 ADD COMMENTS

Don’t have a smart TV? Don’t worry – you don’t need one, even if you want to stream the 25 000+ series, movies, documentaries and kids’ shows available on Showmax on your big screen.

If you have a big-screen TV and a streaming media player, whether it’s an Apple TV or Google Chromecast, all you need is your iOS or Android phone or tablet, the latest version of the Showmax app, a Showmax subscription, and a Wi-Fi connection, and you’re good to go.

Read on to find out more about how Showmax works on Apple TV and Chromecast.

Showmax for Apple TV

An Apple TV device plugs into your TV through an HDMI port. It functions like a “converter”, boosting your regular TV’s capabilities to those of a smart TV. By connecting to the internet over a Wi-Fi connection, and to your TV through the HDMI cable, it essentially connects your TV to the internet.

The way you use your Apple TV device to access Showmax depends on the version of Apple TV you have.

If you have the latest version, known as the fourth-generation Apple TV, streaming from Showmax is incredibly simple. All you have to do is search for and download the Showmax app on the Apple TV App Store, and enter your Showmax log in details (if you’re already a subscriber – if not, go to www.showmax.com to subscribe). And that’s it! You’ll now be able to stream series and movies from Showmax directly to your TV through Apple TV – you don’t need to use your iOS device at all.

But if you’re the owner of one of the earlier versions of Apple TV (i.e. second or third generation), you’ll need to use the AirPlay functionality. Luckily, it’s a very simple process. First, download the latest version of the Showmax app on your iOS phone or tablet. Log in if you’re already a subscriber (if you’re a new user, sign up here.) Now, use your phone or tablet to search for and select the show you want to stream. You will see an AirPlay icon on the bottom right corner of the video player on your device. Select this icon and pair to your Apple TV. The device will “send” the shows to your Apple TV over your Wi-Fi connection, and Apple TV will then stream them directly to your TV screen.

Remember that your phone or tablet will also need to be connected to Wi-Fi, or you’ll be using your mobile data for streaming.

Showmax for Chromecast

Chromecast is a media streaming device that is similar to Apple TV, but is compatible with Android phones and tablets. It plugs into the HDMI port on your big-screen TV and connects to the internet over Wi-Fi, and it lets you stream shows from your phone or tablet onto your TV.

The latest version of the Showmax app has Chromecast support, which means that Showmax subscribers can stream shows from their phone or tablet onto their TVs. Simply download the latest version of the Showmax app from the Play Store, and enter your log-in details if you’re already a subscriber (or sign-up here if you’re a new user). Select the Google Cast icon and pair to your Chromecast receiver. Then search for and select the shows you want to stream. Press play, and the show will be on your TV instantly.

As long as your phone or tablet is running a version of Android that’s 4.1.0 (JellyBean) or higher, and you have a Wi-Fi connection at home that your mobile device and your Chromecast device can connect to, there’s nothing standing between you and your favourite binge-worthy shows on your big-screen TV – even if you don’t have a smart TV.

Showmax, in conjunction with Vodacom, announces a major addition to the Showmax service.

From 27 March, Showmax will supply three months of data, adding up to 3GB in total, at no extra charge to new customers who sign up for Showmax through Vodacom. In addition, existing customers who have already signed up through Vodacom will also receive this data.

In total, this dedicated Showmax data is enough to watch up to 35 episodes of hit shows like Younger and The Big Bang Theory*.

Speaking about the decision to include data with Showmax, Chris Savides, Head of Showmax Africa said:

“Internet TV is taking off – it makes so much sense if you’ve got a smartphone or tablet to stream and download TV shows and movies whenever and wherever you want. What we’re finding, though, is that data can be an issue for some customers and that’s why we decided to try including it in the purchase price. For a single monthly fee you know exactly what you’re getting with no worry. Importantly, we’ve applied this retrospectively to existing customers who signed up through Vodacom, so nobody misses out.”

For more information and to sign up visit www.showmax.com/vodacom.

Once signed up, customers will receive 1GB of data dedicated to Showmax usage, valid for 30 days. As long as the customer remains subscribed to Showmax, another 1GB bundle will be allocated at the end of the first and second months, taking the total data allocation to 3GB over three months.

“With the option to download shows to tablets and smartphones via Wi-Fi plus this free Vodacom data when you’re on the move, this is a great way to test out Showmax and see why so many people are signing up for internet TV,” said Savides.

Existing Showmax customers who have signed up through Vodacom will also be allocated 1GB bundles of dedicated Showmax data for each of the following three months.

The data bundles apply to both Showmax Premium and Showmax Select customers.

Using the most data-efficient download setting, 3GB of data is enough to download up to 35 episodes of 20-minute hit shows. If the same 20-minute shows are streamed using the most data-efficient setting, this data would be enough to watch approximately 30 episodes.

“We want to take data out of the equation for customers and this promotion is just one approach that we’re trying. We’ve got more in the pipeline. Our ultimate goal is to make internet TV accessible to as many people as possible,” concludes Savides.

For more information visit www.showmax.com.

*The number of shows that can be viewed depends upon the the level of bandwidth capping selected and/or the download quality selected. The example of 35 shows is based on downloading using the most data-efficient quality setting.

Taking Film & TV To The Kids

Posted by radio On March - 20 - 2017 ADD COMMENTS

For a third year running, the Magic In Motion Expo was held for grade 9 students to introduce them to the world of film and television. For four days, Sasani Studios in Johannesburg, welcomed over 3000 learners from around Gauteng. The aim of the expo was to open the minds of the young learners to the untapped careers that exist in the entertainment industry.

Former M-Net employee and now TV and radio host Ashmud Martins was there to welcome the kids and hype them up for the day’s activities. For him, the expo was a great initiative. From humble beginnings himself, he believes that the expo can help uplift and give hope and positivity to the young kids for their future.

The highlight for many of the students was seeing their favourite Mzansi Magic actors Andile Gumbi and Gcina Mkhize on a mock Isibaya set. A few students were selected from each group to act a scene with the cast. Their role-play and introduction to the on-set crew left them all in awe of just how much goes into putting a show together.

The control room visits, the media operations room and exhibition were part of the package. The expo partnered with 11 tertiary institutions, AFDA, Boston Media House, City Varsity and The Animation School; to name a few. Information, education and exposure- the students had their eyes opened to the variety of study fields that were previously unknown to them.

The outgoing Magic In Motion Academy interns were on hand to share their experiences of working in film and television. From getting hands-on experience on various sets, in the control rooms, to working with esteemed producer Bobby Heaneythe grade 9 students left with a wealth of information on how to direct their study paths in future.

Reneilwe Sema (Channel Director, Local Entertainment channels), Nkateko Mabaso (Group GM, M-Net South Africa), Yolisa Phahle (CEO) visited the expo and spent some time with the kids. “South Africa has lots of stories to tell. And it’s up to us to learn how to tell those stories”, said Yolisa Phahle.
