Mzansi Magic viewers can start blocking off 8pm in January 2017 because they won’t want to move from their couches once the channel’s compelling offerings begin airing.

MzansiMagicLogo_LGThe intriguing array of local drama and reality shows will see firm favourites returning while new shows will ensure thrill-a-minute, authentically South African viewing.

Kicking off the line-up is the new season of gripping family drama Saints and Sinners, on Sunday, 08 January. Season Three comes chock-a-block with tension as characters dodge bullets, survive emotional beat downs, deal with triumphs and betrayals – all while staying ahead of everyone else in their twisted mind games.

In a small screen first, Mzansi Magic’s new prison drama Lockdown should make for compulsory TV watching when it airs on Monday, 09 January. Set in a women’s prison where power and survival mean everything, the terse and fast-paced drama will take you into the lives of the inmates as they battle demons that hold them prisoner in every sense of the word.

“I think it’s safe to say that come January 2017, people will not be taking calls or going out at 8pm because they’ll be parked in front of their TVs watching DStv channel 161,” says Reneilwe Sema, M-Net’s Head of Drama. “As Mzansi Magic, we pride ourselves in being the mirror of South African society by telling stories that reflect our beautiful and complex society. Our growing content does just this.”

Tuesday, 10 January sees the return of the emotional docu-series Utatakho. Nimrod Nkosi is back in Season Four as the host and will journey with men and women on their path to find their biological fathers, and deal with the joy and pain that comes with unravelling their genetic background.

Sticking to the theme of family, Mzansi Magic will unveil a new reality show, Papa Penny Ahee! on Wednesday, 11 January. The series follows the colourful existence of legendary Shangaan disco king Penny Penny as he navigates life as a musician, polygamist, a father of 17,  community leader and son to his 90-year-old mother.

Another fascinating family reality show is The Ranakas, a spin-from the hugely successful Vuzu Amp show Dineo’s Diary. The Ranakas debuts on Thursday, 12 January, and will take viewers deeper into the world of this boisterous entertainment family who have long captivated the imagination of South Africa.

It’s going to be a thrilling January, all exclusive to Mzansi Magic (DStv Channel 161).

DStv promises fewer repeats in 2017

Posted by radio On December - 14 - 2016 ADD COMMENTS

You’ve told us that there are too many repeats. You’ve told us you want more new shows and new movies. We’ve heard you and we’re busy doing something about it.

DStv-digitalWhile we won’t do away with repeats entirely, our plan is to cut down where we can and bring you more fresh content. We’re also going to help you find more shows you might like, but never knew existed.

We’ve reduced the number of premium M-Net movie channels from six to four so you see fewer repeated movies across channels. We’ve removed AMC and True Movies and launched ROK (a Nollywood movie channel) and Zee World, which features Bollywood films that have been dubbed into English.

We’ve relooked at how we make Sunday nights THE movie night in your home. From this December, you’ll see three brand new movies on Sunday nights, instead of just one after Carte Blanche.

At 20:00 you can tune in for a blockbuster on M-Net 101, at 20:30 you can tune in to a different blockbuster on M-Net Movies Premiere on DStv Channel 104, and at 21:00 you can tune in to a world cinema movie on M-Net Edge on DStv Channel 102.

We know you love the themed pop-up channels, and we’ll continue to do more of those during 2017. We’ll also add new movies from the global stage, including cinema titles, independent films and content straight from the Sundance Film Festival.

From April 2017, there will be new movies on Mzansi Magic and Bioskop. This means that anywhere from 52 to 104 new movies will grace your screen every year! Our Afrikaans movies on fliekNET will be bolstered by some 12 new movies annually.

We’re also proud to introduce the M-Net Movie Collection on our Catch Up Plus service, which boasts 1 000 titles for you to choose from! So if you can’t find any movie you would like to see on one of our movie channels, simply connect your DStv Explora to the internet or log on to our DStv Now app.

We’ve taken away CBS Drama and CBS Action which had many series you’ve already seen on other DStv channels.

Universal and FOX channels have improved their offering with new seasons of some of their popular shows such as NCIS, Rosewood, The Walking Dead, Empire and brand new shows such as Pitch and Legion.

The Walking Dead

With our channel partners, we’ll be increasing our exclusive, first-run shows and bring you more fresh shows on a weekend. We’ll also be making more shows available as box sets on Catch Up Plus, which means you can watch an entire season of a show as soon as it has finished its run on DStv.

Documentaries and lifestyle channels

Many of our documentary and lifestyle channels stack their series over weekends – so they play an omnibus of the shows you would’ve seen in the week. We’ve asked these channels to rather give you more fresh shows on the weekend.

New historic events content will be shown on HISTORY while National Geographic is currently airing Mars (Sundays at 20:05), BBC Earth will showcase Planet Earth 2 early in 2017 and BBC Lifestyle brings Dancing with the Stars.

We’ve spoken to the channels concerns about how often some titles get shown such as Top Gear, Pawn Stars, Storage Wars, Come Dine with me, Fast & Loud and Gold Rush. Not only do we have a commitment that over time they will be played less often, channels have also promised to phase them out to make way for newer shows.

Finding something you would like to watch

We want to help you find new series, new movies and new documentaries and lifestyle shows that you will enjoy watching. There are a number of ways we do this now and we’ll also add a few more in 2017. M-Net will launch a 30 minute show which will air on Sundays from the end of January 2017, which will help you find new content, show you what is on M-Net channels this week – which shows are new, and which shows are taking a break. Everything you need to get the most of your DStv entertainment experience.

We’ll also add a way for you to tell whether a show is new, and whether there are new episodes of your favourite show.
