Facebook to Stream Live MLS matches

Posted by radio On March - 11 - 2017 ADD COMMENTS

Collaboration with Facebook will provide fans additional interactive touchpoints with the League and its 22 Clubs

Major League Soccer and Univision Deportes, the multimedia sports division of Univision Communications Inc. (UCI), the leading media company serving Hispanic America, announced today a collaboration with Facebook to live stream a full slate of regular season matches on the social network. As part of this, MLS will also drive further social engagement with fans and produce more unique digital content.

At least 22 matches during the 2017 MLS regular season that are being broadcast on Univision networks in Spanish will now be available in the U.S. for live streaming in English via the Univision Deportes Facebook page. The live streamed matches, which will be produced for consumption on mobile devices, will feature Facebook-specific commentators, interactive graphics, and fan Q&A and polling features allowing viewers to engage directly with commentators throughout matches. The first MLS match to be streamed on Facebook will feature 2017 expansion club Atlanta United hosting the Chicago Fire on Saturday, March 18 at 4:00 p.m. ET.

Additionally, MLS will now produce 40 exclusive “Matchday Live” shows on Facebook on MLS game days, which will feature highlights and analysis from around the League and a preview of the day’s upcoming matches. These shows will be produced specifically for Facebook and available on the MLS Facebook page, with interactive features that will connect viewers directly to “Matchday Live” hosts.

“We are committed to serving our passionate fans,” said Gary Stevenson, President and Managing Director, MLS Business Ventures. “We are working with all of our partners on making sure our games, and additional content, get to our fans anytime, anywhere, and on any device.”

“As the undisputed home of soccer in the U.S., Univision Deportes, together with MLS and Facebook, is committed to growing the sport across platforms and regardless of language,” said Juan Carlos Rodriguez, President of Univision Deportes. “Further engaging the more than 18 million English-language viewers that have watched soccer on Univision coupled with the continued success of our MLS broadcasts, including our record-setting season opener, is a natural path in this new era of content consumption.”

“Major League Soccer’s innovative approach to the fan experience has cultivated truly special in-stadium environments, where flag-waving and chant-singing fans come together to passionately support their clubs,” said Dan Reed, Facebook Head of Global Sports Partnerships. “We’re very excited for MLS and Univision Deportes to bring this same innovative, community-first spirit to the Facebook Live broadcasts of league matches this season. Their approach will provide fans with an entirely new way to experience a live soccer broadcast that is optimized for mobile screens and social viewing. So even if they’re not at the stadium, people can watch the game on Facebook with a great view of the action while interacting with a highly-engaged community of fans.”

Throughout the 2016 season, MLS collaborated with Facebook on a number of innovative projects, including doing a total takeover of the Sports on Facebook Page, MLS Commissioner Don Garber hosting a Facebook Live Q&A following his annual State of the League address, and creating unique content around signature MLS events including the MLS All-Star Game, Decision Day, and MLS Cup.

More local flavour from Mzansi

Posted by radio On March - 11 - 2017 ADD COMMENTS

Drama, strife, fame and family dynamics are central to Mzansi Magic’s popular reality shows. Not only have viewers been treated to one provocative show after another since the beginning of the year, but things are about to become even more on the small screen between May and October.

The channel will be serving love in the form of new relationship and dating reality shows. There’s Kheth’omthandayo*, a reality dating show with a twist. The recipe is like this – take one bachelor/bachelorette, add four suitors who match their requirements, eliminate the unwanted and at the end, choose between the two who tick the right boxes. It’s all about who’s got the best game!

Another newbie, Imfihlo*, will see people reveal their “true selves” in their pursuits of happiness – from admitting to long time crushes to asking forgiveness from their families.

Keeping with love and reality, Uthando neSthembu is sure to get tongues wagging as it explores the subject of polygamy in the 21st century.

Returning to the small screen are Idols SA, The Ranakas, Papa Penny Ahee! and the emotional conflict resolution show, Please Step In.

More DStv Originals coming your way

Series addicts are in for a treat with the return of thrilling dramas Igazi, Isithunzi and Lockdown.

Igazi held Mzansi spellbound with its intriguing storyline of a family at way, ending the season with the shrewd power-hungry Nomarussia headed to jail, rightful heir Bantu ascending the throne and magical dark forces taking control of his ruthless half-brother Jonga’s corpse.

The Isithunzi fairytale also continues, with Winnie and her “ninjas” surviving unexpected twists of fate and do battle with big bad wolves, cruel relatives and their own shadows to discover their personal power and happy ever afters.

Tension, betrayal and survival still drive the terse women’s prison drama, Lockdown, as the inmates battle demons within and outside the prison walls.

Two brand new dramas join the fascinating series line-up. INumber Number, inspired by the successful feature film of the same name, is about a cop that infiltrates a crime family to bring his estranged father to justice; only to find the father he has always wanted to have.

IKhaya* is the story of one man’s life-long quest to keep the secret of his two separate families living in two different cities, from being uncovered. Members from both families are also controlled by their own secrets and lies, making this a precarious house of cards ready to tumble down at any moment.

What’s a Mzansi Magic line-up without a telenovela? Sit still for the return of Ring of Lies. In its second season, the story digs deeper into the Majola and Madima families. Could there be something darker and more sinister that binds the two? In Season 2, the shocking truth about Ruth’s baby is revealed.

Honouring local talent

With so much on offer from the channel, the Mzansi Viewer’s Choice Awards should be a sweet thrill for viewers as they vote for some of their chart topping artists, best reality shows, actors and series from this buffet of delectable local-flavoured offerings.

Here’s what’s coming your way from April:

– Igazi S2

– Kheth’omthandayo

– Uthando neSthembu

– Ring of Lies S2

– Isithunzi S2

– INumber Number

– Idols S13

– Please Step In

– Mzansi Viewer’s Choice Awards

Facebook launches Video App on Apple TV

Posted by radio On March - 3 - 2017 ADD COMMENTS

Facebook is keen to prove its social media platform isn’t just about news feeds or updates from friends but can be an equally popular video sharing site as well.

Facebook has launched a new Video app on the Apple TV. The social media giant had already identified videos as one of its priority areas, and the launch of the new app dedicated exclusively to videos can well be considered to be in line with that. The app will be compatible with only the fourth-gen Apple TV.

The new app that allows you to view the videos in a big screen will also enable Facebook to emerge as a competitor to YouTube, something that the company wishes to see itself to shape into in future. Facebook’s VP of Partnerships Dan Rose had earlier announced such an app for viewing videos being in the works though a similar app for Android should also be in the making. Dan, though, is yet to confirm any such plans.

Meanwhile, as should be already discernible, the app will be good for viewing only videos and will carry none of the news feeds or photos that you can see on the regular Facebook app. The Video app will have six sections – Shared by Friends, Top Live Videos, Following, Recommended for You as well as Saved Videos and Recently Watched. You will also be able to visit a particular page to view videos shared by them.

There also are reports of Facebook trying to forge an agreement with MLB to have one baseball game to stream on the app every week. However, nothing definitive has emerged on that so far. That said, there will no doubt be similar efforts to source more exclusive live content to stream on the Facebook Video app.

Facebook will also be recommending the more popular live streams based on what you like and viewing tendency. The social media giant already has extensive knowledge of our likes and preferences and populating the recommended section will never be an issue for them.

The Video app is available for free from the tvOS App Store even though it won’t function as a standalone app. Instead, the app would very well be part of Facebook for iOS and requires an active Facebook account for its operation. Dan also stated the app won’t carry any ads as of now though that again is a tested method to rake in popularity during the initial stages.

ShowMax sets up shop at the Nairobi Garage

Posted by radio On March - 3 - 2017 ADD COMMENTS

Internet TV company ShowMax has set up its East Africa headquarters in Kenya at the acclaimed Nairobi Garage co-working space, and is in the process of recruiting for a number of new roles based in this office. The new office will support growth both in Kenya and in the wider East Africa region as ShowMax continues to expand to new countries with a tailored, localised service.

Talking about this, Chris Savides, Head of ShowMax Africa said:

“One of the keys to business success in Africa is recognising and catering for the differences in each market. In our view it’s essential to tailor content, functionality, and partnerships to the needs of consumers in each individual country. Our new office in Nairobi forms the heart of our operations in East Africa and is key to this localisation strategy.

“We chose to base our operations at the Nairobi Garage for both practical and competitive reasons. Practically, it’s a flexible space well-known for consistently delivering the services essential to running a business like ours. Competitively, we want to be plugged-in at the heart of digital entrepreneurship in the region. We’re looking forward to learning from and hopefully contributing to the business community in Nairobi.”

ShowMax is currently recruiting for a number of roles to be based at the new office including:

Partner growth manager East Africa

Head of regional growth East Africa

Marketing manager Kenya

For more information on working at ShowMax visit

Nairobi Garage, set up in early 2012, is the largest co-working space in Africa accommodating over 100 businesses. They currently have two different office hubs located in Westlands and Ngong Road and have further expansion plans in the pipeline.

Hannah Clifford, General Manager of Nairobi Hub said:

“A common mistake companies make is to think that they can run their business in this region from thousands of kilometers away or even from another continent. It’s great to see companies like ShowMax investing in Kenya and creating jobs. The co-working concept is a proven model and by surrounding themselves with startups and entrepreneurs, we think ShowMax is making the right move to grow their business.”

ShowMax was launched in 2015 and is part of Naspers, a global internet and entertainment company and one of the largest technology investors in the world.

M-Net channels get a refresh

Posted by radio On March - 1 - 2017 ADD COMMENTS

DStv customers have spoken… and MultiChoice and M-Net took note. DStv Premium customers can soon look forward to more fresh series with fewer movies and series repeats from M-Net.

MultiChoice and M-Net will be making key changes to some of the M-Net channels to improve DStv customers’ viewing experience.

Supersized M-Net 101

The ever-popular M-Net Edge (102) will be integrated into M-Net 101 from Saturday 1 April 2017. This will give customers a supersized channel with bumper-to-bumper entertainment ranging from the latest shows from M-Net 101 to the edgier entertainment previously on M-Net Edge.

Customers can look forward to an extended prime time on M-Net 101 from 18:00 to midnight every day. This means fewer repeats on M-Net, which will now be the one destination for the best and newest shows from the US, alongside some great local shows.

Customers can tune in to sitcom fun at 18:00, followed by the latest blockbuster international reality shows at 18:30 and top-notch drama, crime, comedy or action series from 19:30 onwards. Once the kids are safely in bed – between 21:30 and midnight – customers can enjoy critically acclaimed edgier entertainment like Billions Season 2, Magicians Season 2, The Leftovers Season 3, Bates Motel Season 5, Broadchurch Season 3, Mad Dogs Season 1, Detour Season 2 and more.

To top it off, M-Net will pull out all the stops to give our customers great entertainment on Saturdays. The reality show repeats will be dropped on Saturdays and Sundays, in favour of fresh sitcoms and dramas, which will air on Saturdays from 18:00. Brand new series like cutting-edge medical drama Pure Genius (Augustus Prew, Dermot Mulroney, and Odette Annable), dark comedy Imposters (Inbar Lavi, Parker Young and Stephen Bishop) and the epic event limited series When We Rise (Guy Pearce, Mary-Louise Parker and Rachel Griffiths) can be seen during prime time on Saturdays.

“The entertainment landscape is changing faster than ever – we’ve made these changes based on what our customers have told us. We know they want to see the best new and returning series, and that is exactly what they will get,” says Group General Manager for M-Net SA, Nkateko Mabaso.

More fresh movies more often

M-Net want to show fewer older movies and repeats so DStv customers can enjoy more fresh and newer movies more often. This is why M-Net Movies Showcase (107) will be dropped in favour of more themed movie pop-up channels and movie festivals on existing M-Net movie channels.

“Our pop-up channels are extremely popular,” says Mabaso. “Viewers love the fact that they can easily find a collection of their favourite movies packaged under a specific theme on one channel. They enjoyed the Star Wars and Harry Potter pop-up channels – and we’re planning several more throughout the year.”

The recently launched M-Net Movies Collection also adds to the breadth of M-Net’s movie offering. The M-Net Movies Collection comprise more than 1000 movies and is available on DStv Catch Up Plus, accessible to customers when they connect their DStv Exploras to the internet. The collection is also accessible on the DStv Catch Up section on DStv Now online and on the app. DStv Premium customers can choose what movie they would like to watch, when it suits them best.

DStv Family customers gets VUZU

There is also good news about fewer repeats for DStv Family customers. From April, VUZU (116) will move into their family of channels. VUZU will replace M-Net Family (162) which has not performed as well as expected. VUZU carries many of the popular family and celebrity reality shows that our DStv Family customers enjoy.

Reset your recordings

Leading up to the integration of M-Net Edge and M-Net 101, DStv Premium customers can enjoy two, three or four back-to-back episodes of their favourite shows in the next couple of weeks.

Customers with DStv Exploras and PVRs are reminded to reset their recordings as their favourite shows find their new home on M-Net 101. These shows include Elementary, Major Crimes and Grimm, as well as Express from the US shows Crashing, Girls, Homeland, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver and Lucifer. Remember to also keep an eye on the DStv Catch Up calendar available on

For the latest information regarding these changes please consult your on-screen TV guide, find the online schedules at or, or the TV Guide on the DStv Now app.

They are young, black and proud – and they are here to make their presence felt. Say hello to Mzansi’s youth, better known as millennials and Generation Y.

This coming April, Mzansi Magic (DStv channel 161) will unveil South Africa’s newest daily series when they introduce viewers to Isithembiso, a youth telenovela that peels off the facade  of innocence to delve into what it means to be young in an era of instant gratification, social media, peer pressure and promises that shape the future of the young.

As today’s youth faces more choices and struggles than ever before, Isithembiso explores the theme of “promise”, a word that perfectly encapsulate the hope that comes with being young. There are promises made and broken – promises of a better life, a brighter future, greater life choices… Ultimately, the idealistic filter through which the young look at life is ripped off to reveal that “all that glitters is not always gold”.

Brought to you by Bomb Productions, who have been serving Mzansi the nail-biting award-winning soapie Isibaya since 2013, Isithembiso explores themes of Innocence, Seduction, Corruption and Redemption.  It will inform and educate the youth on life choices and the responsibility that comes with freedom.

As Born-Frees are rapidly discovering, freedom is not free, and no one is promised a tomorrow.

Don’t miss Isithembiso when it premieres on Mzansi Magic, DStv channel 161, in April 2017.

The SABC strives to have the best local television formats and will continue to pursue bringing you the best of local premium content. Further announcements of the show’s replacement will follow.
