Netflix, the global leading entertainment streaming platform, today announces that the Mandarin-language film Dear Ex, winner of multiple awards across Asia, will premiere globally starting February 1.

Dear Ex was written by Mag Hsu and Shih-Yuan LU and directed by Mag Hsu and Chih-Yen Hsu. The all-star cast, including Roy Chiu, Ying-Xuan Hsieh, Spark Chen and Joseph Huang, brings to the screen a story of diverse and sometimes conflicting family values in a refreshing and fascinating way that marks a departure from conventional Mandarin films.

“From the themes and cast to the decision to land on Netflix as our exclusive global premiere platform, every choice was an experiment,” says director and writer Mag Hsu. “We have shone a spotlight on the forces behind different kinds of family values for audiences in Taiwan and across Asia. Now, we want to show the world the growing momentum in Mandarin-language films.”

Dear Ex follows three people who are linked by fate because of love and family. Adolescent Song Chengxi (played by Joseph Huang) loses his father Song Zhengyuan (played by Spark Chen) to cancer, but instead of having time to mourn, Chengxi finds himself caught in a feud between his widowed mother Liu Sanlian (played by Ying-xuan Hsieh) and his father’s gay lover Jay (played by Roy Chiu). As Liu fights Jay for Song’s insurance money, Chengxi gradually learns that what holds both Liu and Jay back is not the money, but the weight of the loving memories they each have with his father.

About Dear Ex
Directed by renowned writer Mag Hsu and emerging director Chih-Yen Hsu, Dear Ex is a melancholy comedy from Taiwan. Created by Golden Bell Award winning writer Shih-Yuan Lu and produced by DEAR Studio, the cast includes Roy Chiu, Ying-Xuan Hsieh, Spark Chen and Joseph Huang. The film kicked off its theatrical release on November 2, 2018 and has been well-received across Asia since its debut in the Taipei Film Festival. It has won awards for Best Actress at the Golden Horse Awards, Best Feature Film, Best Actor, Best Actress, and Media Recommendation at the Taipei Film Festival as well as Best Director at the Hong Kong Asian Film Festival 2018.

Showmax launches free data deal with Vodacom

Posted by radio On November - 8 - 2018 ADD COMMENTS

Showmax has launched a deal with Vodacom featuring three months of free access to the Showmax video on demand service and three months of free Showmax data.

Showmax has launched a new deal with Vodacom featuring free access to the Showmax service and free Showmax data. Vodacom customers who add Showmax to their bill between 1 November 2018 and 31 January 2019 will receive 15 GB of free Showmax data* (5 GB per month for three months). On top of this, the usual Showmax R99/month subscription fee will be waived for three months. There’s no contract or lock-in period – Showmax can be cancelled at any time.

This free data deal with three months of free access to Showmax is exclusive to Vodacom customers. To sign up for the deal, visit www.showmax.com/vodacom. The deal is open to both prepaid and contract customers.

Once the three months’ free access period has expired, customers will then be charged R49 per month for Showmax access for the following nine months. In total, this means that a year of Showmax, which would normally cost R1 188, will instead only cost R441 – and that’s with the 15 GB of free Showmax data during the first three months.

Showmax apps** feature bandwidth capping functionality, giving viewers the ability to select the most appropriate quality level for the device being used. The low data usage setting, which is perfect for watching on cellphones and tablets, gives 45 hours or more of viewing from 15 GB.

In a first for a South African drama series, Both Worlds’ UNARMED has been selected as one of the finalists for C21 Content London 2018 Drama Series Pitch. From over 100 submissions from established drama creators worldwide bidding to attract additional finance and co-production partners, C21 selected Both Worlds’ political spy thriller as one of the final eight invited to pitch at the International Drama Summit on November 27.

UNARMED will be presented at the International Drama Summit at Content London on Tuesday 27 November between 3pm and 4.30pm. The series will compete with productions from France, The Netherlands, Denmark, Finland and the UK. The winning project will be announced at The International Drama Awards, which take place from 7pm on Wednesday 28 November.

UNARMED, in advanced development stage, has attached internationally recognised talents including Shawn Slovo (A World Apart, Catch a Fire, Mohammed Ali’s Greatest Fight) who developed the pilot script alongside Both Worlds’ Thierry Cassuto and Karen Jeynes, Charlotte Brändström (Colony, The Witcher) as director, and Academy Award nominee Djimon Hounsou (Amistad, Guardians of the Galaxy) as the lead.

The series is a fact based thrill ride through Southern Africa, Germany, France and Belgium in both the late eighties and present day. When terrorists pull off an audacious heist at Pelindaba,  one of the world’s largest stores of highly enriched uranium, and a representative of the International Atomic Energy Agency is brutally murdered, the world’s eyes are turned to Southern Africa and the threat of a dirty bomb. UNARMED is based on the premise that South Africa finally agrees to hand over its weapon-grade uranium stores, a legacy from the atomic bombs the apartheid regime made in defiance of UN sanctions, and thirty years of secrets were to be revealed.

Both Worlds is a Cape Town based South African production company known for its many award-winning programmes including twice International Emmy nominated and multiple SAFTA winner ZANEWS’ Puppet Nation, as well as Point of Order and Operation Rainbow Warrior. Both Worlds has recently launched a high end scripted programmes division, and has several series in advanced stage of development with local and international broadcasters.

The Content London International Drama Pitch Summit is the world’s highest platform to launch scripted series to the international marketplace, providing access to over 2000 of the industry’s top executives. The winning pitch will receive a marketing package through C21Media worth £30,000 to support series’ development and pre-sales promotion.

Canada in the Spotlight: DISCOP Joburg 2018

Posted by radio On October - 4 - 2018 ADD COMMENTS
DISCOP, the leading content, adaptation right and project market dedicated to Africa and the Middle East, today announces that Canada will the Guest Country of its Johannesburg edition slated from 14 to 16 November.
This announcement was made possible thanks to the Canada Media Fund (CMF) and the National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF), an agency of the the Department of Arts and Culture of the Republic of South Africa, who have launched a dedicated incentive for the co-development of audiovisual projects between Canadian producers and South African producers.
The total amount of funding available through the Incentive is approximately CAD $120,000 or ZAR 1,200,000 with each funding organization contributing half of the funds.
“In the past 20 years, we’ve seen content produced between Canadian and South African creators hit international markets with great commercial success and critical acclaim. Producers in both countries have partnered to tell stories that are culturally-relevant to audiences in both countries and around the world,” said Valerie Creighton, President and CEO, CMF. “Through our matching fund with the National Film and Video Foundation of South Africa, we have further enabled the development of strong partnerships between producers in both countries. As we aim to create yet more partnerships between Canadian and South African producers, we look forward to participating in DISCOP Johannesburg 2018 where Canada will be Guest Country.”
NFVF Acting CEO, Shadrack Bokaba has this to say of the partnership, “The relationship between South Africa and Canada is very special, it was the first audio-visual co-production treaty to be signed, stemming from shared values of equality, democracy, peace, security and prosperity. The treaty has allowed the union between South Africa and Canada to continue to grow and forge new partnerships while cementing and enhancing old ones. The recently renewed Canada Media Fund partnerships is one such partnership aimed at fostering the development of content that is able to travel and find audiences across the globe.
It is therefore encouraging to witness South African content markets like DISCOP honour the relationship in this manner. We look forward to creating more opportunities for collaboration.”
The tribute to Canada will be marked by the presence of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation who will be in Johannesburg to present PANORA.TV its new B2B online platform facilitating transactions, from searching and shopping, to contract generation, payment processing and content delivery.
Canadian producers and government representatives attending DISCOP Johannesburg 2018, including André Ferreira, Communication Manager of the CMF, will be hosted at the “MADE IN CANADA PAVILION”, a networking and communications hub that will provide visibility and market exposure to Canadian delegates.
Two important sessions scheduled in the context of DISCOP’s sidebar NEXT GEN development and knowledge-transfer program will also examine coproduction and distribution opportunities between Canada and South Africa.
1500+ delegates are expected to take part in DISCOP Johannsburg 2018 including 400+ acquisition and development executives representing broadcasters, premium cable channels, mobile operators and streaming platforms operating in Sub-Saharan Africa and 200+ global and regional distributors will also be at the market to showcase their latest offerings and seek new representation deals.

In a move to accelerate the development of a sustainable production and distribution ecosystem across Africa and the Middle East, DISCOP content, adaptation right and project markets are held several times a year in strategic regional industry hubs.

Mzansi Magic’s popular drama series, The Imposter returns to the small screens for the second instalment on Sunday, 7th October 2018, on DStv Channel 161 at 20:00 with Seriti Films on the helm of production as the producers.

The creators of The Imposters, Ferguson Films, approached Seriti Films to produce the follow up season of the hit series by adding their own flavour and twist to the new storyline.

“The idea was that the series has a premise that can continue for as long as each season has different creative minds to it. We wanted to encourage producers in the industry to work together to build an even greater TV and film landscape. Mzansi Magic fully endorsed this direction as it was in line with their new story telling anthology concept,” says Shona Ferguson.

Ferguson Films paved the way with the first season which became one of the best performing dramas on Mzansi Magic hands over the batten to Seriti Films to up the stakes and produce yet another successful season.

“As Mzansi Magic, we decided to explore a strategy by introducing a novel storytelling technique with our dramas and telenovelas – the anthology concept (rolling out a series of stories under one title). In this case, The Imposter will be the first show to carry this concept; where we will be alternating top production companies to come up with the new story, new cast but keep the same premise. By keeping the premise of the show allows us to refresh the narrative by introducing a new perspective each season”, explains Reneilwe Sema, Director of Local Entertainment Channels at M-Net.

The Imposter Season 2 comes with an all-new cast, packed with an innovative storyline with a different approach set in a whole new world.

Following Season 1’s gripping storyline which zoned in on twin sisters, Mantwa and Matshepo Tau, whose lives took an unconventional twist when one of the sisters broke out of prison to claim the life of her identical twin. The second season is also set in two worlds.

In Season 2, we explore two sides of the same coin as The Imposter follows the story of Tebogo ‘Tebza’ Modikoane who struggles to make ends meet and to provide for his daughter in a township called Kliptown, while his long-lost twin brother, Gary Mokoena lives a luxurious life, with manicured lawns, expensive cars and extreme wealth.

A rollercoaster of events that neither Tebza nor Gary could anticipate takes shape as one is faced with living in poverty while the other won the trust fund lottery.

The second season boasts the acting prowess of Mpho Osei Tutu as Tebogo ‘Tebza’ Modikoane/ Gary Mokoena, Didie Makobane as Mmabotse, Mmabatho Mogomotsi as Candy, Gail Mabalane as Kelebogile, Joyce Skefu as Valeta, Seputla Sebogodi as Dali, Tiisetso Thoka as Paballo, Nonhle Thema as Evodia, Sonia Mbele as Big Daddy, Kabelo Thai as Turbo to name a few.

“The Imposter Season 2 promises to be yet another fast-paced series that will keep the audiences captivated. We are always looking for creative ways to give our viewers spellbinding television. We can’t wait to unravel the plot and showcase the talented cast production has ensembled,” concludes Sema.

A chance at Love at Second Swipe

Posted by radio On October - 2 - 2018 ADD COMMENTS

Lifetime’s new makeover series with host Pabi Moloi premieres 25 October on DStv channel 131 – stream live on DStv Now.

Lifetime’s latest local reality show Love at Second Swipe will be making over the South African dating scene one online dater at a time, starting Thursday 25 October at 20:00 on DStv 131 and streaming live on DStv Now.

Hosted by Pabi Moloi, each week a team of experts will completely makeover two people in the hopes of helping them find love online. Together with the experts they’ll revamp their dating profile, their look and also dig deeper into issues that could be holding them back.

Love at Second Swipe promises to be uplifting, sometimes hard-hitting and always emotional. You’ll laugh and cry as you watch ordinary South Africans transformed inside and out, culminating in a jaw-dropping big reveal.

Recognised TV star Pabi Moloi will host Lifetime’s Love at Second Swipe, while a qualified team including a life coach, style expert, makeup guru and hairdressers will rally around the participants throughout the transformation process.

Moloi believes there’s so much about Love at Second Swipe that the viewer will be able to relate to, “These are personal stories, these are real human beings experiencing the anguish of wanting to love and be loved and not knowing how to navigate that and we’re going to capture those moments. It excites me to demystify what online dating is and to help people discover the true connection with themselves before they make a match with somebody else.”

The show’s ‘life coach’ Dr Zenia Barnard who has degrees in both psychology and technology says the ‘makeover’ isn’t a superficial exercise , “We delve into their emotional challenges and what has possibly been holding them back and what they can let go of. You can put as much makeup on and change your hair but if the emotional shift isn’t happening then that person isn’t going to find ultimate happiness and love.”

Renowned stylist Shaldon Kopman will help the Love at Second Swipe participants see what it is they need in order to portray themselves correctly on their online dating profiles. He adds, “A lot of people don’t understand how to dress themselves or how to style themselves. So in the show my role is to makeover the participants from a style perspective so that they can feel good and comfortable in their space and go out there and conquer.”

The six-episode series is produced by Hi Mom exclusively for Lifetime Africa. South Africa’s latest reality show – Love at Second Swipe – brings together style tips, online dating advice and the magic makeover reveal moments. Tune into Lifetime on DStv 131 at 20:00 every Thursday evening, starting 25 October.

DStv Now can be accessed online at now.dstv.com or through the app for tablets and smartphones. The app is free to download on the Google Play Store or Apple App Store and is available to all DStv customers. Live channels and DStv Catch Up content is available to all DStv customers.
