Posted by radio On June - 10 - 2015 ADD COMMENTS

metrodstvThe South African Broadcasting Corporation’s (SABC) 19 radio services are now available on DSTV’s audio package from today. Previously METRO FM was the only public service broadcaster’s radio station on this platform.

Mr Leslie Ntloko, SABC Group Executive: Radio stated: “SABC Radio has over the years claimed its rightful space by dominating the airwaves and it is now the right time to further expand on our offering, by using alternative platforms. This partnership will ensure that our various radio stations’ spectrum is not confined to certain areas. Through the DStv bouquet our radio stations will have a wider national footprint.”

ITV Choice has a packed schedule lined up for its launch on DStv on Tuesday, 5 May 2015. Entertainment highlights include ITV Studios’ award-winning primetime entertainment series Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway; family entertainment shows Big Star’s Little Star from 12 Yard and Keep It In The Family from ITV Studios and Over The Top Productions, celebrities mastering variety acts in ITV Studios’ Get Your Act Together and 12 Yard’s Eggheads and Coach Trip.

The drama offering features brand new titles such as Poldark, the period drama adaptation of the classic novels produced by Mammoth Screen; Arthur & George, Buffalo Pictures’ adaptation of Julian Barnes’ novel about the life of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, played by Martin Clunes and ITV Studios’ World War II drama Home Fires. It also features detective series Vera and Murdoch Mysteries and Britain’s best-loved soaps, Coronation Street and Emmerdale. All programming will air very close to UK transmission dates, with the soaps airing within 48 hours of the UK.

ITV Choice will be exclusively available to DStv Premium customers on DStv channel 123, across the African continent. The launch means that ITV Choice will now be available in over 100 countries across the Middle East, Asia and Africa.

Nic van Zwanenberg, Channel Director of ITV Choice, said: “We are delighted to bring ITV Choice to Africa for the first time with MultiChoice as our partners. Viewers across the continent will join 11 million households in over 40 countries and territories in the Middle East and Asia who already enjoy the best British entertainment and drama within days of it airing in the UK. This is a key element of our strategy to build the ITV Choice footprint, and we look forward to announcing further expansion in due course.”

Aletta Alberts, GM for Content for MultiChoice South Africa commented: “Our customers love British content and when we decided to add more British channels, ITV was the natural choice. The cherry on top is that our DStv Premium customers will get to see the majority of programming only two days after the UK broadcast.”

Vinny’s House gets summer sizzling

Posted by radio On November - 15 - 2014 ADD COMMENTS

Are you looking for the perfect soundtrack to warm up your festive season? Then tune into Mzansi Magic Music on DStv Channel 321 every Saturday for a blast of sizzling hot music from the legendary Vinny Da Vinci.

VinnysHouse

Vinny’s House kicks off on Saturday, 15 November 2014 at 19:00 – and puts one of South Africa’s most loved DJs and producers in the heart of homes across the country as they celebrate the best season of the year!

With parties and get-togethers being the order-of-the-day, Vinny will be offering up a head-spinning music mix each Saturday that’s perfectly brewed for summertime.

The iconic mixmaster won’t be alone in bringing the party into South African homes: each week Vinny’s House will feature a special guest star to keep the beats rolling. Among those destined to step into Vinny’s House are DJ Ganyani, Tim White, Ralf Gum, Julian Gomez, Christos and Mbuso – in short, the who’s who of Mzansi House music, both legends and newcomers!

“Vinny’s House is the first of its kind on Mzansi Magic Music. This show is guaranteed to attract house heads, focusing on the technical art of DJing with one of the masters at work. We intend to take viewers on an exciting ride where they will have access to exclusive Deep House song selections,” says Nkateko Mabaso, Director of Local Interest Channels at M-Net.

Vinny himself needs no introduction to devoted House music fans. He is considered one of the most established figures on the South African dance music scene and has galvanised deep club culture over two decades. His influence has not just been as a DJ – although he’s revered by fans and peers for his ability on the ones and twos, a skill that was honed in the 1990s. Vinny is also one of the original music entrepreneurs. Through his partnership in the House Afrika empire, Vinny has overseen many top-selling compilations, including the House Afrika: Deep House Sounds and Africanism series, all of which he compiled and mixed.

As a producer he’s broken ground with the DJs At Work project alongside longtime friend, DJ Christos. Together they have released five critically acclaimed, platinum-selling studio albums and a slew of top-notch deejay mixes.

“Vinny’s house has been a long timing coming and I know SA is ready for it. Big up to Mzansi Magic Music for having the vision to launch it, and to all my longstanding DJ friends and House Afrika family for supporting me. Viewers are in for a real treat,” says Vinny Da Vinci.

Vinny continues to specialise in his signature deep house style, breaking new music and educating his audience. He has deejayed with several of his international peers visiting South Africa – including “Little Louie” Vega, Frankie Knuckles, Dennis Ferrer, Charles Webster and Jazzy Jeff – and now he’s getting ready to DJ for Mzansi Magic Music viewers. Summer will never be the same again!

DSTV Strengthens Channel Monopoly

Posted by radio On September - 5 - 2012 ADD COMMENTS

On 29 August, DStv announced it will migrate its services to a new satellite, which will provide more capacity to add more channels and services in the future.

Some channel numbers are expected to change on 1 October 2012 in order to make space for the new channels and to group relevant channels together.
General entertainment channels with international content will be located from channel 101 to 143, whilst general entertainment channels with local content will feature from channel 144 to 169. Documentaries and lifestyle channels will sit from channel 170 to 190 and the free-to-air channels such as SABC and eTV will be on channel 191 to 195. The SuperSport channels in HD and SD will be housed from channel 200 onwards.

The changes will happen automatically in the early morning hours of Monday, 1 October. DStv customers are advised to access the information about their specific decoder on DStv.com or press OK on their DStv remote to see if any action is required on their part.
Customers who live in a complex or flat where they don’t have their own dish will have to request their body corporate to verify if their system is capable of receiving new services before 1 October. These customers can SMS their email address to DStv at 32444.

Standard Definition (SD) and High Definition (HD) channels on same number

Whilst some channels are being moved around, DStv is also taking the opportunity to put HD and SD channels on the same channel number. For example, M-Net and M-Net HD will be on channel 101 also from 1 October. This means that if you are a DStv Premium customer with an HD PVR, you will receive M-Net HD on channel 101 whilst a customer with an SD decoder will get M-Net on channel 101.
The only exceptions will be Discovery HD Showcase, which is not available in SD and SuperSport HD channels which are not scheduled with the same content as the SD channels.

“Whilst it may take some getting used to, we trust that the new channel numbering will make for an overall better navigation and viewing experience on DStv. We want to assure our customers that we have taken every care to ensure there is as little disruption and change to their viewing routine as possible,” said Collins Khumalo, CEO of MultiChoice South Africa.

Themed M-Net Movie channels

M-Net will also replace its MM1 and MM2 movie offering and expand it to six movie channels, one premiere and five themed channels: M-Net Movies Premiere, M-Net Movies Action +, M-Net Movies Family, M-Net Movies Comedy, M-Net Movies Drama and Romance, and M-Net Movies Showcase. These channels will all be available in HD.

Movies released by Hollywood studios will first be screened on M-Net Movies Premiere or on M-Net on a Sunday night at 8pm. Thereafter, the movie will be screened again on the relevant themed M-Net Movies channel. However, some niche movies will be screened directly to the relevant themed M-Net Movies channel. There are two movies starting on the M-Net Movies channels starting every half hour.

“The change to themed movie channels will make it easier for viewers to find a movie that appeals to their mood or taste at a particular time. The daily choice of movies on the M-Net Movies channels will increase and it will be more convenient to find a movie to watch,” says Pierre Cloete, Director of M-Net Movie Channels.

More channels and more HD

DStv will also be adding two Africa Magic channels: Africa Magic Entertainment and Africa Magic Movies 1. This brings the number of SD channels, which will be added to the DStv platform at the beginning of October to six: four additional M-Net Movies channels and two Africa Magic Channels. DStv Premium customers will get all six channels.

DStv customers with HD PVRs will also get Studio Universal and Universal channels in HD from 1 October, in addition to the M-Net Movies channels, which they will also get in HD. This means that there will be an additional 7 HD channels from 1 October, increasing to 14 the total number of HD channels on DStv.

“We know that DStv customers are enjoying the movies on Studio Universal and the unique series on Universal Channel. We are excited to further enhance their viewing experience by making these channels available to them in HD as well,” commented Colin McLeod, Managing Director Emerging Markets, EMEA, NBC Universal.

“We want to give our customers the best entertainment experience possible, which is why we are excited to be adding more HD channels. Our focus is on continually improving the viewing experience for all our customers and we believe that as of 1 October, that experience will truly be so much more,” said Collins Khumalo.

DStv will be embarking on an extensive communication and marketing campaign leading up to 1 October, ensuring all its subscribers are informed of the upcoming changes.

For more information keep checking their special feature on the channel changes, press OK on your DStv remote or go to channel 198 on DStv. A full list of the new channel numbers is also available by pressing OK on your DStv remote or in the October Dish Magazine.
