JOYOUS CELEBRATION REACHES FOR NEW FRONTIERS

Christmas is almost upon us and so is the much awaited Joyous Celebration 17th Musical Miracle in partnership with MTN. It is a magical show happening this Saturday, 15th December 2012, showcasing more than just an ordinary talented South African choir, it will be a full concert, one which has been crafted through hard work and dedication to make it the success that it is needs to be.

 For the Joyous Celebration team and fans this concert will be a reminder as to why Joyous Celebration simply is joyous, it will be a reminder of a dream between three friends, Jabu Hlongwane, Lindelani Mkhize and Mthunzi Namba from Kwa-Zulu Natal, and the evolution of how Joyous Celebration  evolved into a remarkably large brand. The choir has carved an identifiable footprint in South African history; it was established in 1994 when Nelson Mandela became the first president of a democratic South Africa. “The initial purpose was to celebrate the peaceful voting process through music” Goodman Hlongwane of Joyous Celebration states. Joyous Celebration simply fit in with the celebrations of a new South Africa through linking their musical talents with the significance of that year by hosting their very first Joyous Celebration show. Joyous Celebration has over the years, produced over the top performances in all their concerts and the 17th Live Music Miracle will do nothing short of exceeding the standards the choir has become renowned for.

 Performing is not only about blending melody with voices, but about pleasing the crowd, this is what makes Joyous Celebration stand out from the many other gospel choirs that one would ever see perform live on stage.  Their angelic voices, punctual and lively band team up to create an electrifying artistic presentation of what gospel music should sound like. According to Goodman Hlongwane, “No matter who you are you will be impacted by the presentation of music that is always fresh and professionally done.” The choir has been promoting their new album ‘Joyous Rewind’, an album set to please old and new fans as well as share some old time gospel favourites.

Joyous Celebration 17 will not only be a follow up on their CD and DVD collections but it will showcase a sound much more mature when compared to their previous offerings. A must see is the new technology and upgraded sound system that will redefine the extraordinary  style of performance that Joyous Celebration is known for.

The highlight of 2012 for most gospel music lovers this festive season will be the biggest presentation of quality music by Joyous Celebration, taking place at Rhema Ministries in Randburg. Tickets for the show are priced between R150 and R300 and can be booked via Computicket or Shoprite Checkers stores.

 It’s not certain what heights await Joyous Celebration, but there is a certainty that they want to be the best where ever they go, and in all they do.

When invited to the launch of a gospel choir, I had my misgivings. Though the invitation said that the choir was young and interested in combining traditional gospel with their newer, younger musical tastes, I was still unconvinced. Only to be very pleasantly surprised by Gospel Goes Beyond.

 Unlike any other launch, this one began early, with complimentary non-alcoholic drinks for the attendees (there was a bar available for those who so wished). Located in the Yamaha Theatre, the gathering was small with a rare sense of community among the guests. Though the surroundings were glamorous, the local celebrities were real and engaging.

 The choir itself is made up of fourteen young singers from all over South Africa and their gospel rendition of Eminem’s Lose Yourself certainly points toward their desire to give gospel a fresher sound. Despite this, they held true to the idea of a gospel choir. Their timing was impeccable and their harmonies well-placed and rehearsed, combining to deliver a spectacular choral performance.

Many of their songs incorporated interesting rhythms, using vocals to dictate the beat and the flow of songs instead of relying on traditional percussions. This technical proficiency can be directly attributed to Nqobile Sibeko of Joyous Celebration, who also wrote, composed and produced all songs on the upcoming album. The band was made up of a keyboard, a set of drums, a bass, two bongo drums and an electric guitar. Their original songs have a distinctly funk feeling to them, encouraging members of the audience to get up and dance (which they did, co-ordinating a “bus” and bringing the party to the front of the stage).

 In the first half of the launch, Reggie Hufkie included religious rap in each song. The ladies of the choir were all clad in stylish purple numbers, as a professional choir would be, swaying and snapping in unison. The sheer togetherness of their performance was impressive.

The choir was joined by Kay-Leigh O’Donovan, Omen and Howza of Peanut Gallery, covering 4 Non Blondes’ What’s Up? O’Donovan’s vocals were powerful and Peanut Gallery certainly raised the roof.

Ernie Smith, a two-time SAMA winner and four-time KORA nominee, was the highlighted guest star of the launch. With guitar that made you want to cry and dance at the same time, an impossibly funky style and a voice made of gold, we were all sold. When joined on stage once more by GGB, we were sold again by their beautiful rendition of Love Don’t Hurt Me, easing into an acappella chorus near the end of the song that moved every person present. 

The rest of the launch was comprised of one or two choir members leading individual songs, belting out catchy tunes in powerful voices. The choir worked hard to present a united front by giving each member an equal opportunity to shine in their own right, while not specifically promoting one member above another.

Fezi Hlatshwayo, founder of Gospel Goes Beyond, ended of the launch with a speech. “Should I speak as a man of God or a businessman? This time next year, at five past nine, GGB will not look the same, they won’t sound the same and they won’t just be playing at the Yamaha theatre but bigger things. I have a feeling in my heart. That’s me speaking as a man of God.” He called on all present businessmen to support these talented young people and promised special rates for all present between January and April. He challenged all media to put GGB on high rotation. “Let’s get these guys rolling.”

Their full-length album will be available next year, with tracks like “Nkosi Impilo Yami”, “I’m Free” and “Down on My Knees”. I strongly recommend you keep an eye out for these talented young musicians and their project to give gospel in South Africa a new face.

8ta surprised Brickfields Festival fans by hosting not one but two Brickfields Music Festivals this year. Describing itself as a “burgeoning inner city soirée”.Brickfields Music Festival provides music-loving South Africans with a line-up rivalling that of established local music festivals, showcasing the best local talent from all over the country in a one-day, four-stage event.

 After its inception in November 2011, the festival has only gained followers. The music manages to speak to more than one market in South Africa while maintaining an overall ‘essence’ that makes the young people go crazy. The four-stages scheme allows multiple artists to be showcased, with each stage being dedicated to providing a certain type of music. The Live Stage features all live bands while the TOY TOY, Carfax and Mielie Beat Bar stages offer performances from loved local DJs. This scheme manages to cater to the few who like only one type of music as well as the many who want to experience a real variety, available throughout the festival by just walking from one stage to the next.

 Capitalising on the Newtown movement that is spreading across Johannesburg, the venue is as interesting as the line-up. The entrance is situated in a large alleyway, giving the Brickfields name a tangible appearance with contemporary-grunge décor and buildings. Though the festival is held in Johannesburg inner-city, the Brickfields team went to lengths to give the festival that out-of-town feeling, with the bar area resting on fake green grass (a pleasant contrast to the rainy weather) and plastic-covered hay bales providing comfortable seating.

With a break in the gloomy clouds, the Live Stage opened up the day’s festivities with a performance from Soweto-based band BCUC (Bantu Continua Uhuru Consciousness). They describe their sound as “indigenous funky soul”, drawing from tribal instrumentation and beats to accent their portrayal of modern South Africa as a country “rich in tradition, rituals and beliefs.” Frontman Jovi’s performance could be called nothing short of colourful. Vibrating with passion, he careened around stage, transferring his love and enthusiasm for their music to the audience. Kgomotso added her incredible vocals to the set, injecting the music with a soulful feeling. The drums, the whistles, the tambourines and the slow blues guitar all came together in a unique, inspiringly cultural relationship that brought to mind memories of dark skies, fires and a time when music was a story.

 Shortstraw brought the indie to Brickfields. Their sound was unique, contagious and made you want to get your feet moving. The catchy pop influences on their music didn’t add up to a generic sound, combining with their folk-indie instrumentals and their enthusiastic performance to create a happy-go-lucky atmosphere. With songs that spoke to the audience’s every day experience, Shortstraw certainly made an impressive Brickfields debut.

Shadowclub, one of the main attractions, surprised the crowd by announcing that they would be playing a few songs from their upcoming album, due next year. The Shadowclub sound combines rock and jazz, with emotional vocals from frontman Jacques and challenging guitar riffs. The band drew in a dancing, jiving crowd with their 6pm slot, setting the tone for the night with music that is impossible to resist. MC Jon Savage introduced the band alternatively as “Jacques And The Pants”, taking his inspiration from Jacques’ optical black-and-white leggings, covered in palm trees.Jon Savage then took the stage with Tumi and his band Yesterday’s Pupil. Tumi’s vocals were more moving than most, communicating passions and pains from deep within. Standing on stage playing her bass, Tumi managed to enchant. Yesterday’s Pupil added their alternative rock sounds to her R&B lyrics and came out with a riveting combination that was both light-hearted and meaningful.

 

Unfortunately, due to the rain, the Live Stage was completely shut down for the rest of the night. Cape Town’s Machineri and Spoek Mathambo played intimate sets in the 8ta VIP lounge, located next to the main bar area. Other main acts Van Coke Kartel and Beast were cancelled, due to risks from the wet equipment.

 The TOY TOY stage, on the other hand, saw most of the rest of action. Felix Laband played to hoards of devoted fans, yet again sealing his status as one of the best local DJs. Other anticipated acts filled up the late hours, seeing performances from Craig Massive, Chinxxx and Monique Pascal of Pascal and Pearce.

As a whole, the festival was an enormous success. We hope to see an even better line-up next year with fewer weather interruptions. The 3rd Brickfields Music Festival has certainly convinced me to become a staple fan.

GAGASI FM CELEBRATES ITS SPONSORS AND STAKEHOLDERS

“It is important to celebrate success so you can assess how you can do better the next time,” said the MEC of Economic Development and Tourism, Mr Mike Mabuyakhulu, guest speaker at the Gagasi FM annual gala dinner held recently to thank the station’s sponsors and stakeholders for another year of hard work. It was a stylish occasion held at the chic Docklands Hotel in Durban and the quality of the event was perhaps a reflection on the quality of radio station Gagasi FM is.

In its six years of existence, Gagasi is now the second biggest regional station in the country, after Jacaranda, with a listenership of 1.78 million. It’s an urban contemporary youth station targeting those between 16 and 34. It competes with national radio stations but it is able to be on the ground as a regional station. It prides itself on “Putting KZN First,” – and that’s the slogan of their news department.

 KZN is said to be rich and leading when it comes to news production and Gagasi maintains this by sourcing its journalists from KZN academic institutions. They cover national and regional stories and the objective is for the newsroom to soon dominate the digital space with the help of social media. The news team seemed excited at the prospect of covering the Mangaung Conference live for the station.   One of the nuances that make Gagasi FM stand out is that it broadcasts in Isizulu and English, even their bulletins are bilingual. “This is how young people of KZN communicate,” Programmes Manager, Vukile Zondi pointed out.

The station’s top advertisers are blue chip clients and it has maintained a good relationship with provincial government. MEC’s like Mr Mike Mabuyakhulu use Gagasi FM to engage the public on their programmes. Mabuyakhulu highlighted how KZN is becoming the province of major events with the 5thBRICS Summit being held in Durban in 2013, for example. He believes Gagasi plays its role by being the messenger and contributing to citizenship.Other distinguished sponsors included the Moses Kotane Institute – a maths and science technology and engineering academy which targets poor and disadvantaged out of school youth and works with the ethos of Ubuntu.

 Reflecting on 2012, Managing Director of Gagasi FM admitted it was a challenging and turbulent year. “This year saw government cutting down on advertising in the media and we felt the pinch. We are a regional radio station running on six transmitters when our competitors have 18. The only area we don’t reach in KZN is New Castle and we have applied for additional footprint. We are hoping to increase to eight,” he said.     

Meyiwa believes in the potential of the station and the main drive is audience growth. He trusts they can reach 2.3 million listeners. The vision is to become the station of choice to the listener, customer and employees.

The SABC Crown Gospel Music Awards took place on the 18 of November at the Durban ICC honouring some of the best artists in gospel music. This annual event takes place in Durban and this year it celebrated “5 Years of grace.”Gospel is a top selling genre in South Africa and these Awards are an attraction in the country’s musical calendar. The Crown Gospel Music Awards have become one of KZN’s flagship events, hosted by the KZN government. They have become so big in their five years of existence that even President Jacob Zuma has become a regular guest. He was absent this time around, but was represented by two of the first ladies. 

Rebecca Malope was the recipient of the Best Gospel TV Show award.

  If you are of the thought that Gospel is a somber and conservative genre, the SABC Crown Gospel Music Awards dispelled this with raucous and explosive performances from the likes of gospel queen, Rebecca Malope and fellow artist from Nigeria, James Okon. Of all the music awards ceremonies in the country, these ones are probably the most collaborative, where the audience is very much part of the show, joining in with every hymn or chorus. And things can get unpredictably joyous. When First lady, Ma Ntuli came on to present an award, the crowd broke out singing ‘Umshini Wam’ for instance.

The role of radio and especially community radio in promoting gospel music was honoured with the Best Gospel Community Radio Show awarded to Thetha FM’s Gospel Tunes and Best Gospel Radio Show awarded to Ligwagwala FM’s Siyadumisa show. Rebecca Malope’s It’s Gospel Time took the award for Best Gospel TV Show.

 The SABC Crown Gospel Music Awards have grown so much so that new categories were added on this year. These include Best Gospel Poetry and Best Gospel Rap taken by Vusumuzi Phakathi and Thabang Byl (of Last Days Fam) respectively, who are forces within their individual and overlapping fields. Adding on to this brand, the founder of this event, Zanele Mbokazi announced that the International Gospel Music Blestival (word play on blessing and festival) would be happening in Durban on December 31 featuring one international act and many of SA’s cream of the Gospel crop. “It’s a date,” she said.

METRO FM AWARDS NOMINATION LAUNCH DATE ANNOUNCED

Last month, METRO FM shocked the nation when it announced that the date for this annual spectacle had been moved to next year. At a press conference, spokesperson for the SABC Kaizer Kganyago said the awards were undergoing a major makeover. In a recent statement, the station has announced that it will be launching nominations for the awards from the 22nd of November extending its submission period to record companies.

The 12th year anniversary of the Metro FM awards is set to be a spectacle; the station has some surprises in store for listeners. The road to the Metro FM awards will be kicking off with a launch for the new destination and a top 5 announcement party and listeners stand a chance to win tickets to these events. Last year the awards were held at Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit and were hosted by Tbo Touch and Zizo Bedo. Some of the big winners at the awards included Zahara, AKA and Big Nuz who also entertained audiences with their popular hit songs. It is yet to be seen if the Metros will live up to the standards they have set in the last 11 years.

CRASHCARBURN COMES DOWN TO EARTH

CrashCarBurn can easily be seen as a local favourite. Formed in England in 2006, the band returned to South Africa in 2007 with an EP to their name and set about distancing themselves from their former band-identity, Tweak.

Band members Garth and Brendan Barnes started Tweak while in high school and quickly became famous among South African teenagers, getting airtime for their songs on radio and being thrown into the underground Hall of Fame headfirst. When Tweak went their separate ways, the Barnes brothers headed to London for a year with CrashCarBurn in mind. “We went from being known everywhere we go to literally playing in empty clubs with maybe one or two people,” said Garth Barnes (lead singer, guitarist and frontman) on stage at their album launch on Tuesday.

Fabian Sing, supposedly residing on their couch at the time, originally acted as their live sound engineer and later joined the band as lead guitarist when Ian Broekhuizen emigrated to Australia. Etienne Janse Van Rensburg (bassist) and Brendan (drummer) had been friends for years – according to Garth, he wasn’t even auditioned for the band. “We just called him up, asked him if he had a bass, asked him if he could play and he was in the band.”

 

Hitting the music scene under a new name with catchy, powerful rock anthems, the band quickly rose above their former levels of fame. CrashCarBurn also became the first South African band to be invited to the Vans Warped Tour, where they played sixteen shows across the East Coast of America and two in Canada, opening them up to an international market. Other tours in Asia and the UK only increased their global fan-base.

 

I had the opportunity of spending a few minutes with CrashCarBurn after their launch for Gravity, their third studio album, on Tuesday night. The launch was unique in more ways than one – the venue was the NuMetro Cinema at Monte Casino, a very comfortable and relaxed way of enjoying a live show. The band also screened a fifteen-minute documentary of behind-the-scenes footage for fans to glimpse a more personal side to the band and its members. The on-screen graphics during performances mirrored the album art, focusing on triangles in an ever-changing slideshow of patterns. The band itself performed incredibly, often sounding the same live as they do recorded, if not better.

 

CS: Thank you so much for giving me a few minutes of your time. I really enjoyed the show. I have to ask – why do they call you Bugsy?

Brendan ‘Bugsy’ Barnes: Bugsy? Embarrassing. When I was small, a little baby, I used to be really fat and my parents called me Bugalug because I kind of bug-a-lug-a-lugged around. And that apparently evolved into Bugsy. It’s not a very rock ‘n roll story.

CS: I really enjoyed the album. You mentioned that it is your most bi-polar album to date. What did you mean by that? Do you mean that you explored new sounds as a band?

Garth Barnes: No, I think what we were trying to get at is that this album has the hardest ever CrashCarBurn songs but also the softest every CrashCarBurn songs. We’ve got Monsters and Angels, which is basically a metal song and then Get Up and Fly, which is straight off an Adele album. And then everything in-between.

CS: On your Facebook page it says that you’re Pop-Punk. What does that mean to you as a band?

Garth: We need to update that. I think we’re more Pop-Rock now, to be honest.

Fabian Sing: Power-Pop.

Brendan:  You know, we make rock music. It’s rock music that’s like pop-music.

Garth: Bit of Hip-hop. You know what, you can call it whatever you want. People always try to put themselves somewhere – are we Indie, are we this, are we whatever. You make music and some people dig it and some people don’t.

Fabian: I think in a broad sense, we would be Pop-Rock.

Brendan: I think Dubstep’s pretty big right now. New album – Dubstep!

CS: So you [Brendan] directed the documentary. Do you do that a lot or is it something that you do occasionally?

Brendan: When I’m not playing in the band, I’m a cinematographer. So I work on a lot of music videos, TV shows, short films, films – stuff like that. Basically, we’ve been filming behind-the-scenes stuff for the last ten years and so we decided well look, we’ve got all this cool footage, let’s put something together. Little bit of a behind-the-scenes insight to who we are. So I got a bunch of my mates that I went to film school with and a friend of mine edited it, another guy did the special effects and it was like a team of close friends put it together. I think it turned out really well.

CS: Do you plan on doing more documentaries?

Brendan: I think it’s a really cool window into the world of the band and that people who listen to the CD like seeing it. So if we have time and cool stuff to show people, we’ll definitely keep doing it.

CS: Did any of you feel that, when showing the documentary to a cinema full of people, footage that you thought was really cool suddenly seemed quite private?

Garth: Yes.

Brendan: There’s more personal stuff than what ended up in the documentary. That was the borderline for how far we could push it. I’ve seen a lot of bands do EPKs that are like, “check us out, we’re really professional and we’re the coolest band you’ve ever seen”. I wanted it to be a little more like, “see all the stuff we’ve done and we are a cool band” but also this is Garth standing naked in Holland and this is Fabian dancing drunk on stage and this is Beth [Etienne] with a hickey on his neck. I wanted it to be something that fans could watch and be like, “cool, these are real guys”. It’s fun to see. Not like, “these guys are unattainable”. Which is all a joke anyway. All of these EPKs that make bands look like super-mad rock stars – I film that and I fake it. None of them are super-mad rock stars so I definitely wanted it to be closer to home so people could really connect.

CS: Did you guys decide to do the show in a cinema after making the documentary or did you want to do a show in a cinema and made a documentary to go with it?

Garth: Chicken and egg.

Brendan: I think the idea to do a documentary/EPK came first and then we thought about the best place for people to hear the album. In album launches, no one knows the songs and it’s more about getting press to actually hear the album. We didn’t want to do it in a sweaty club with bad sound where no one knows what’s going on. So we thought let’s do it in a cinema where the sound will be banging, we can show this awesome documentary on screen and people can sit and actually listen to the music.

CS: Did you enjoy playing your new stuff for the first time?

Garth: Definitely. It’s always scary playing new songs for the first time because you know that there are a bunch of important people there. At the same time, the pressure’s off because no one knows what the songs are supposed to sound like. You can play anything really and people will just say, “wow, that’s an interesting jazz chord that he threw in there” and meantime, it’s a cock-up.

Brendan: I think we did okay.

CHATSWORTH’S GOT TALENT

After five weeks of singing, dancing and acting, Lotus FM and Chatsworth centre hosted the Grand Finale of the Chatsworth’s got talent competition. 16 year old Anneline J Govender walked away with the title and a R12 000 cash prize. Lotus FM presenter Lloyd Paul, said he was happy that Anneline won. “I am happy that she won. I knew that it would be her from her first audition”.  Asked what she would do with the money Govender said she would put it in a savings account for her future.

A firm crowd favourite, the Durban born singer further said the most exciting moment of the competition was definitely the win and thanked Lotus FM and Chatsworth centre for the opportunity to make her dreams come true.  Other winners included “SAChina” a group comprising of Jani Sabeso, Sphelele Dhengu, Mzi Mtono and Kwazikwakhe Jani who were second runner up. Beat boxer Branon Joseph came third.

Lotus FM Marketing Manager, Donne Henry said, “I was stunned, firstly by the talent that Phoenix has and even more taken back by the hundreds of people who lined up, cheering and routing for their favourite contestants.   It was quite evident that this community initiative has taken the Chatsworth by storm, and Lotus FM will definitely think of making this an annual event.

Munghana Lonene Lauds Xitsonga Culture

Munghana Lonene FM is set to launch its annual Xitsonga Music Awards in the spirit of fostering cultural diversity in South Africa’s radio industry.

 

Established in 1965, the SABC Xitsonga radio station plans to wow its audience with a spectacular awards ceremony taking place on the 3 November 2012 at Karibu Leisure Resort in Tzaneen, Limpopo.

As September marks the celebration of SA’s cultural heritage, Munghana Lonene FM lauds Xitsonga musicians who take pride in their culture at the awards’ launch on 20 September 2012.

 

“The reason behind the awards is to promote Xitsonga language through music and celebrate the cultural heritage of Vatsonga/Manchangana, as well as to use Xitsonga music and South African music in general, to disseminate structured messages intended to drive key societal campaigns, e.g. Health Issues, Human Rights, Women Empowerment Issues, Social Cohesion and so on,” says Munghana Lonene FM’s Marketing Manager, Vongi Nkanyane.  

 

Launched in 2003, the awards are also part of Munghana Lonene’s plans to ensure that music remains a powerful instrument that helps deepen democracy.  Nominations are open to all artists who are not necessarily native Xitsonga speakers but can perform in the language.

 

“For me, this has been a great journey. I have been part of this journey since 2002. The then station manager, Mandla Soko appointed me as a project manager in 2003 and since then these awards have been part of me. I have no doubt that the 2012 version of Munghana Lonene FM Xitsonga Music Awards will assist the station to achieve its objective of growing audiences”, says James Shikwambana, Munghana Lonene FM Station Manager.

 

The SABC radio station has partnered with Mopani District Municipality as the sponsor and CCP Recording Company as the partner for the Xitsonga Music Awards.

MetroFM Mesmorizes Fans

For the working folk, Saturday is the best day of the week.  One gets to sleep in. See friends; do some shopping; have a long, slow coffee. Feel good about life, the universe and, if not everything, at least most things. The MetroFM African Masquerade packaged Saturday, 15 September, into a night of mesmerizing entertainment and hypnotizing song.

 

Three of the country’s most soulful artists, Kabomo, Unathi and Zonke graced the stage of the Mosaiek Teatro in Fairlands in celebration of MetroFM’s 26th birthday.  Themed “African Masquerade”, people from every corner of the country poured into the sophisticated Teatro wearing masks and fashionably dressed.

 

A VIP lounge was prepared for guests to mingle and enjoy an African cuisine before the start of the musical extravaganza.  It was already half full when we arrived with couples occupying most of the couches. The bar was lined up with inviting drinks – of course we helped ourselves to one or two.

 

Sounds of Unathi and Kabomo’s music flowed through speakers as the lounge gradually filled up.  The flamboyant Somizi Mhlongo made a noticeable entrance as he attempted to liven the room saying: “You are all sitting like you’re in a dining room!”

 

He was just one of the media personalities seen at the event. The vivacious Khaya Mbau was seen with her boyfriend, Tebogo Lerole from Kwela Tebza.  Theo Kgosinkwe was also spotted with the current SA Idols’ Top 4.

 

At 7pm, an upbeat house song invited people into the auditorium were magic would soon be ignited. A slight delay had many frustrated while late comers were trickling in, in numbers. Saved by Glen Lewis and VigiLante on the decks, the crowd were moving to the rhythms of old school versus new school between the two DJs.

up for the two soul queens.  Performing songs from his debut album, All Things Grey, he lured ladies to sing to his melodies. Recently signed by Reverbnation, the multi-talented singer and producer is a fiery performer who lays his soul on stage. He had the crowd dancing to hits like Uzobuya and Busisizwe. People went nuts when he called for Nothende to join him in singing the hit song, Colour of You.  He also thoroughly entertained the audience with renditions of songs by the American artist Musique Soul Child and SA’s own Micasa Music.

 

A stellar performance by Kabomo opened up for the incredibly talented Zonke Dikana. Splendour dressed in a feathery blouse and stylish high-waisted pants, Zonke is one of few artists who has the backing of a full band on stage.  Belting perfect notes from her core, she gave a magnificent performance leading the crowd from one song to the next. Her first album, Ina Ethe, has since reached platinum she announced and she had her fans to thank she said.

 

Radio hits such as Feelings and Jik’Izinto were obvious crowd pleasers and her infectious voice could be listened to all night and it certainly had the people asking for an encore straight after her last song. Gracefully she returned and sang her heart out.

“WOW!” said DJ Sbu to a roaring applause after Zonke’s performance. He stood on stage and scanned the room behind his gold mask and encouraged the crowd to participate in competitions.  MetroFM gave away prizes to its listeners which saw each winner walk away with weekend getaways at some of SA’s top boutique hotels.

 

An elegant Unathi took the stage to close off the evening’s celebrations with self-entitled song Unathi.  She gave a gorgeous performance as she showered on the souls of her audience through heart-rending tracks such as Thembisile and You make me happy. Joined by the Drakensberg Boys’ Choir, Unathi wooed the crowd as it waved in unison.  She finished off with her latest hit song Kwa Nolali.

The MetroFM African Masquerade, an entertaining event, well-organised from spectacular stage effects to soothing music that left fans wanting more.  It formed part of the radio station’s birthday month celebrations themed “Rewind”, which also brought events such as the massive party on September 1 at Sedibeng in Meadowlands, Soweto.

 

In the same vein, the station calls on record labels to submit their best work for the annual MetroFM Music Awards set to take place later this year.  Both the nominees and finalist announcement parties will be hosted and listeners will stand a chance to win tickets to this much sort after event.
